Limbaugh resigns as ‘titular head’ of the Republican Party, passes ‘the baton’ to Colin Powell.

Today on his show, hate radio talker Rush Limbaugh delivered a tongue-in-cheek monologue in which he announced that he was “resigning as the titular head of the Republican party.” Limbaugh explained, “It’s not an office I sought, it was a position that rather was ladled onto me…without my acquiescence. … I quit!” Explaining his reasoning for his resignation and continuing his public feud with Gen. Colin Powell, Limbaugh said:

LIMBAUGH: There frankly is someone far more qualified and capable and more in tune with today’s Republican party than I to be, not only its titular head, but its real head and that would be Gen. Colin Powell. So, I now pass the baton to Gen. Powell as the titular head of the Republican party. From this day forward, it will be up to Gen. Powell to instruct the party on things it needs to do to win elections in 2010 and of course the all important presidential election in 2012.

Watch it:

While it’s not clear whether or not Powell is “more in tune with today’s Republican party” than Limbaugh, Powell is certainly “more in tune” with the American public.

  21. Purple State says:

I always knew Rush was ‘titular’.

Okay, so Rush claims he was anointed the position of the “titular head” of the Republican Party. Time for us to do some work. Aside from the Democratic Party and the media, can we find any citations where the RNC claims Rush heads the group?

I would argue he’s the head of the neo-conservative movement, not the Republican party. We saw him bounce like a hippity-hop at CPAC, and we’ve seen Republicans kowtow to him repeatedly. But is he the titular head of the RNC? I mean, who’d want to head that mess?

    __________________________________________________________

If the GOP listened to Powell, they’d probably do better in both these elections than they will by listening to Limbaugh.

This is, of course, snide mocking by Rush — implying that only he can steer the party to success and Powell would be woefully incompetent in this area.

OK — when the Republicans lose even more seats in both houses of Congress and when President Obama gets re-elected, what’s Rush going to say? Is he just going to accuse the Republicans of not listening to him?

  29. Hoodathunktick says:

I give it 48 hours, max, and Rush will be back with a tirade about how, as a true American he will not be denied his right of free speech or let his party fall into the hands of nonbelievers.

  30. katy says:

    wait -

“It’s not an office I sought, it was a position that rather was ladled onto me…without my acquiescence.

and so he thinks it’s ok to throw it over to powell, without HIS “acquiescence”?

    imagine that…

  31. Badmoodman says:

Rush: So, I now pass the baton to Gen. Powell as the titular head of the Republican party.

    – - Oh Gen. Powell, Rush is calling your bluff.

  32. Perry logan says:

Rush should resign, because he helped Obama become President. I’ve always wondered why the wingnutz don’t boil Rush in oil for this.

During the primaries, Rush–like all Clinton-haters–was scared sh*tless Hillary would be the nominee, because that was what the voters were saying very emphatically.

And Rush said very clearly that America would never elect a black President. So he cleverly sent his minions out to vote for Obama in one of the Democratic primaries.

So Rush Limbaugh helped Obama become President. He is a party traitor. Even wingers may eventually figure this out. Then they will boil Rush Limbaugh in oil.

  33. krystalview says:

    _____________________________________________________________

Anybody with a grasp of the English language assumes he meant “de facto” and used “titular” instead — possibly due to a brain fart, or because he really doesn’t know the meaning of either one. Kind of in the same way people use the word “literally” when they mean “figuratively” — any word with at least three syllables will do and it doesn’t matter if you use the wrong one. Or even if you make them up — like “irregardless”. There are a lot of people out there who hear words, think they sound cool and intellectual, and then use them themselves, often ignorantly.

Limbaugh’s audience is made up of a lot of people who have no clue what “titular” or “de facto” mean (not to mention “literal” and “figurative”), so Limbaugh’s mangling of the language is one of those “if a tree falls in the forest and no one hears it…?” kind of things.

  45. mary lacewing says:

This guy’s ego truly knows no bounds.

  46. J. Fred Smug says:

BOSS LIMBAUGH is obviously not getting his daily briefings.

RUSH: YOUR party is the REPUBLIC FASCIST PARTY.

You’ve “rebranded” the Democrats the “Democrat-Socialists,” so the Republic Party also has been given a new moniker.

That’s the new reality in these here United States of America.

    Got it?

  47. Xisithrus says:

From this day forward, it will be up to Gen. Powell to instruct the party on things it needs to do to win elections in 2010 and of course the all important presidential election in 2012.

As I said in a previous thread, Colin Powell is the one Republican who could win the 2012 election.

  56. davidwaters says:

I think Rush is a bit too isolating and political. I think that often we focus too much on which party is better in our country, but we should focus on what the two parties can do together. With this bipartisan attitude, we can accomplish a lot more. Personally, I would like to see the US take the leading role in the effort to make poverty history. The Borgen Project has good info on the estimated cost of ending global poverty:

$30 billion: Annual shortfall to end world hunger.

    $550 billion: U.S. Defense budget.

  57. mary lacewing says:

    texasrick Says:

There is that. But, then there’s this, from the Urban Dictionary:

    ladling
Spooning where the back person is grossly overweight and the front person is not.
(as in) Hey Jennie, what’s up with Margie ladling Steve at the company retreat?

There’s more but it may not be appropriate for innocent eyes.
