In October, Bill O’Reilly renewed his contract with Fox News, winning a multi-year deal paying him roughly $10 million per year — placing him well above the top 0.1 percent of income earners. O’Reilly also reportedly charges $50,000 per speaking engagement. Yesterday on his show, O’Reilly said he supports more fuel efficient cars because he has a “middle-class…sensibility”:
INGRAHAM: And what this is, whether you like the green initiatives or not, ultimately, will end up being a continued war on the prosperity of the middle class of America. That’s what this is. It’s part of the remaking of the middle class of America –
O’REILLY: Why, why, why? Look, I consider myself a middle-class guy. Even though I make a lot of money, my sensibility is there.

O’Reilly’s middle class “sensibility” curiously favors the wealthy. Last July, he complained that if President Bush’s tax cuts “on those making $250,000 or more” are repealed, “me and other rich folks” would have to finance “folks who dropped out of school, who are too lazy to hold a job, who smoke reefers 24/7.” This isn’t surprising, of course. A Wonk Room analysis found that O’Reilly saves over $400,000 per year under Bush’s tax code.
In March, speaking to anti-tax crusader Glenn Beck, O’Reilly accused “30 percent” of the public of being “jealous” of the rich, saying they want to “take from the rich and give to the poor.”

As a member of the middle class, I am getting a tax break from the rates under Dubya, I may be getting a health insurance plan I can afford soon, and maybe by the next time I buy a car, I can get one that uses less gas.
Yes — under Bushco, I certainly felt the war against the prosperity of the middle class. Plummeting house prices, skyrocketing unemployment, and economic collapse will do that. But I see a glimmer of hope. I don’t see the war “continuing”.

I’ved lived in Nassau County. As I recall maybe O’Reilly might have been born in Levittown, but he actually grew up and went to school north of Levittown, in an area that’s a little bit tonier. More upper middle class than the Levittown crackerboxes of that time, which now sell in the $400,000 range (many have been remodeled)
That was Billy Joel who hung out with the greasers in Levittown. O’Reilly was more the Catholic/prep school type.

You know, and I’m not sure if I speak for the majority, admittedly some of us do feel that being commenters on a blog makes us big. Some of us feel that providing an opinion strengthens our ability to construct arguments, our ability to process information, and our ability to tell a mean joke. Admittedly sometimes commenting on a blog directed at our own beliefs does skew opinion more in our favor. And that does inflate egos. It does feel good part of the time, but sometimes it is embarrassing, yes.
So if we’re here to become big…is that what you’re here for? To feel important that you’ve come here anonymously to argue?

Anyways, onto the real matter. Frankly, O’Reilly only considers himself a middle-class guy in certain aspects of his life, but that doesn’t qualify him as “middle-class” in my mind’s eye. He made the jump to “upper-class”; barring any catastrophes, he’s not going to have to worry about retirement, foreclosures…heck, it is quite possible, despite popular belief, that he has nothing to worry about regarding employment.
“Middle-class” is “middle” for a reason. They don’t have the worries of the lower-class, but they don’t have the complete comfort and security of the upper-class. There is potential for movement towards either extreme.
Presently, O’Reilly is no middle-class citizen. He may live the life of an average citizen religiously, but he will always get the perks of living a grand life, as long as he doesn’t totally blow his fortune.
Go ahead and bring up Maddow and Olbermann if you so desire, especially since the attention is not on them. They could be upper-class too, but you don’t see or hear them bragging about being just like every Joe Schmoe.
O’Reilly is not the average American. Not by a long shot.

The point here isn’t how much money Bill O’Reilly has. It isn’t even about how “middle class” he was growing up. And it’s certainly not about his being a “success” or not.
It’s about a guy who A) is not middle class, B) has, on a number of occasions, demonstrated his complete lack of touch with the middle class in this country, and C) now claims a “middle class sensibility” — which is laughable.

You know, I’ll agree with you there, jay. Polls don’t mean a thing, unless you ask every single person in the area you wish to cover, and even then the affiliation of the pollster could easily sway the answer to one they wanted.
But I’ll go even further (yes, tangent, I know). Ratings. Ratings don’t mean crap. After all, they’re just polls for people who watch TV. Unless you ask every single person what they watched, you won’t get an accurate reading.
In addition to that, you also have to ask if the person liked the show they watched. You’d have to ask the reasons why they watched the show and if it was due to the show’s agreement or disagreement with one’s own convictions and beliefs.
So I’ll use that argument to make a general argument directed at those who use the SOCREBOARD argument; ratings don’t mean crap.

But you know what jay failed to consider? There is also Party Registration figures. And guess what? Republicans report 55 million registered voters. That’s not even close to half of all people in the US. It’s barely one in six. It’s not even half of all registered voters (170 million). It’s less than a third.

Yes, of course, he’s middle class. but that’s because there is no longer an upper-class culture. If you look at America of 1900, it clearly had an upper-class culture. The rich determined music, art, fashion, literature. They were the center of American life.
And, of course upper class culture was slavishly imitated European culture. A rich person took a trip to Europe, it was reported as news on the front page of the newspaper. Music was the latest coloratura or conductor from Vienna. Women’s clothes were advertised, not by how sexy thy were, but by which rich woman wore them to what gala.
Even small towns had strata
And that’s not even talking about Jews and Coloreds.
Today, America has simply a middle class culture top to bottom, and all that lots of money means is lots of money.
People who make hundreds of millions of dollars a year don’t listen to different music. They watch the same movies, and (if they read) read the same books. And nobody cares what kind of music Bill Gates likes, or what Warren Buffet’s favorite movies are.
Bill O’Reilly considers himself middle class. And he does so because he watches pro football and not polo or yachting; likes (probably wimp-ass classic) rock ‘n’ roll instead of chamber music, and doesn’t dress for dinner.
It is remarkable that we’ve created a loud, obnoxious, vulgar vigorous democratic culture, but it also muddles the issue of rich versus poor. The rich don’t feel they have any responsibility, because they’re just plain middle class folks without as much money as the REAL rich people, and Joe the plumber can’t distinguish himself from someone who makes over $250,00 a year. There’s no cultural divide any more, but that doesn’t make the destruction of the actual middle class any less real.
Bill, you’re not upper class because you have none of the virtues the upper class is supposed to have. But you do have the one big actual characteristic of the real rich: a comfortable insulation from the actual problems and fears of the rest of the world. None of what’s going oon to America touches you, and you’re fre to make up your own worries.
Of course, wealth isn’t necessary to acquire that characteristic. You really only have to be an as shole.

May 20th, 2009 at 10:59 pmYou are conflating socialism with both fascism and with communism. They are not the same things, bud. There is nothing wrong with the concept of and proper implementation of socialism. The highest standards of living in the world per capita are in socialist democracies.
Socialism works wonderfully when used for those parts of society that are necessary for the healthy functioning of said society. Look at the infrastructure, including the energy companies and food. Without everyone chipping in to subsidize those industries, they would not work properly. Americans would not be looking at mere $4/gallon gas, and food prices would be through the roof meaning mass starvation of malnourishment. Such subsidization is socialism, as everyone owns a portion of the means of production of all of these important parts of society via the tax structure.
We aren’t talking utopian socialism or any such silly ideal that is impractical, merely the same basic concept that taxes themselves are founded on: everyone in society chips in a fair share to ensure that all prosper and have a healthy minimum standard of living. We aren’t talking Communism, where socialist ideals are taken to an extreme, and only a handful of politicians controls all of the wealth.
Speaking of which, capitalism ain’t all that when allowed to grow out of control either. The whole idiotic concept of “free market” or supply-side economics leads down a very similar path indeed as both Communism and Fascism. With capitalism left to its own devices, large companies consolidate and merge into progressively larger and larger companies, forming oligopolies, leading to monopolies, and eventually handfuls of corporations controlling multiple monopolies each. Eventually, either that handful of folks controls all of the wealth, or the wealth consolidates into a lone company, who then owns everything. You know what we call such a situation? Feudalism, where a small ultra-wealthy noble class controls everything, and allows the serfdom to live or die as the nobility sees fit. Feudalism sucks. Royally. So to speak.
This is why modern Republican ideology (and certainly that of many Democrats as well) fails so badly. They refuse to see the middle ground. Capitalism should be utilized where it is strongest: innovation and invention, efficiency of processes of manufacturing, responding to changing markets and landscapes. Socialism likewise should be utilized where it is strongest: slow and steady industries that are vital to the functioning of a society, infrastructure, portions of society where access to all has greater benefits than letting the market speak (i.e. healthcare, education, et al; where giving everyone open access to good health and education is worth far, far more to all in society than allowing access only to those who can afford it). Allowing EITHER to be the only guiding principle, and likewise not exploring additional economic principles as they are discovered, is foolish and shortsighted. BOTH are horrific when allowed to run unchecked. BOTH are extremely useful when utilized properly. Neither is inherently evil, neither is inherently good. They are tools to be used. To demonize or hold up as ideal EITHER, for the sake of political gain OR ignorant ideology, is dangerous in the extreme.
Or, to put it in terms you might understand better:
Only wealthy Capitalist possess power. Everyone else only exists to serve their Capitalist leaders.

I live in America, which has a multitude of socialist programs vital to the functioning of the country, without which America would certainly be nowhere near as prosperous OR as open a society in terms of civil rights.

America is a socialist democratic republic, albeit one that is not a prosperous in terms of per capita standard of living as countries that have more actively embraced BOTH capitalism AND socialism.
Prosperity cannot be measured by GDP alone. Why? It’s really bloody simple. Using such a metric gives equal weight to the following: 100% of the people control an equal portion of the GDP = One person controls 100% of the GDP = every variation in between. It is a worthless metric, all things considered.
The metric of a countries prosperity being measured by GDP, or the top X%, etc, means little, for example, if a large percentage of the populace lives in poverty, or simply cannot afford a basic standard of living. On the other hand, the metric of standard of living per capita gives you a MUCH more realistic view of how the country’s residents truly fare.
That old phrase, “A rising tide lifts all ships”? It doesn’t mean what the GOP has twisted it into, it means precisely the opposite. It means that if the overall prosperity is raised, so too is the prosperity of those with the most. The tide is NOT representative of the WEALTHY and the ships of the POOR, as the GOP perverts the phrase. Rather, the tide represents the POOR, and the ships the WEALTHY.
Try forming an actual argument, an actual rebuttal, instead of being dismissively ignorant.
