Powell responds to Limbaugh and Cheney: They have their own ‘version’ of the GOP.

cheneypowell23Earlier this month, Rush Limbaugh declared, “What Colin Powell needs to do is close the loop and become a Democrat.” Days later, Dick Cheney said that he would rather have Limbaugh in the GOP than Powell. “My take on it was that Colin had already left the party. I didn’t know he was still a Republican,” Cheney said. Yesterday, Powell responded to the duo, issuing a sharp rebuke to them for attempting to marginalize his role in the party:

“Rush Limbaugh says, ‘Get out of the Republican Party.’ Dick Cheney says, ‘He’s already out.’ I may be out of their version of the Republican Party, but there’s another version of the Republican Party waiting to emerge once again,” Powell told the crowd.

Shhh, Powell. Don’t mess with The Crazy! We need them to keep talking.

    PEACE

  2. WaltB says:

Absolutely right, only problem is when that’ll happen!

  3. Zimzone says:

I doubt if Mr. Powell will be issuing any apologies to lardass.

  4. DNFP says:

I may be out of their version of the Republican Party

    Exactly.

Not Fat, Dumb, or White enough.

  5. P.D. says:

Jesus, why doesn’t Powell just throw in the towel and switch to Independant or Democrat? The message Limpballs and Darth Cheney couldn’t be clearer. They DON’T WANT YOU!

  6. hanshiro the antlion says:

Yes, Powell wants the kind of republican atmosphere back where they took bribes the old fashioned way

A few nights after he resigned his post as secretary of state two years ago, Colin Powell answered a ring at his front door. Standing outside was Bandar, then Saudi Arabia’s ambassador to the United States, with a 1995 Jaguar.

Powell’s wife, Alma, once had mentioned that she missed the 1995 Jaguar that she and her husband had traded in a while back. Bandar had filed that information away, and presented the Powells that night an identical, 10-year-old model. The Powells kept the car – a gift that the State Department said was legal – but recently traded it away.

  8. Badmoodman says:

there’s another version of the Republican Party waiting to emerge once again,” Powell told the crowd.

    – - Sounds like somebody’s contemplating leading the, uhhh, surge, if you will.

  9. skorpeo says:

i read a response to a somewhere that made the point exactly of where the GOP is now; they would rather have a drug-addicted, multiply-married, entertainer as the voice of their party than a retired 4-star general, former secretary of state, and former chairman of the joint cheifs of staff.

    good luck with that….

“…but there’s another version of the Republican Party waiting to emerge once again,” Powell told the crowd.
    ___________________________________________________________

There have been many versions of the Republican Party since its founding. There was the “house divided against itself cannot stand” Republican Party of Abraham Lincoln, the progressive Republican Party of Theodore Roosevelt, the “dynamic conservatism” Republican Party of Dwight Eisenhower, and the Reaganomics Republican Party of Ronald Reagan.

Which of these GOP incarnations is Powell most nostalgic for? Which does he want to trade the neocon Republican Party of Dick Cheney for?

“I may be out of their version of the Republican Party, but there’s another version of the Republican Party waiting to emerge once again.” – C. Powell

Respectfully, this sounds as delusional as his UN Iraq presentation.

  12. Peter C says:

Powell may be better than Cheney or Rush, but he still staked his personal credibility in front of the United Nations to sell the Iraq war. He chose ‘being a good soldier’ over the truth and I have no use for him.

  13. nellre says:

    The current GOP:
    The party of NO
    The pro-torture party (cowards!)
    The anti-civil rights party
The wall street over main street party
    The party of big business
    The party of liars

Why would Powell want to be identified with that? It’s too late to redraw the GOP image. It’d be like polishing a turd.
Maybe Powell should start a new party, then we can bury the stinking corpse called the GOP.

  14. CageyCretin says:

ot. Hanshiro — I apologized for misreading your post below. Sorry. Very bad day. Must go. :)

  15. Purple State says:

I don’t think Powell is as much delusional as he is hopeful. There are definitely Republicans that do not share the points-of-view their representatives are providing, and there are Democrats that do not like the style of politics that the Obama Administration is presenting. I just feel there are a lot more of the former than the latter that are hoping the GOP gets their act together.

What the GOP needs, however, is a series of base hits, not a home run. The Republicans appear to be swinging wildly at the pitches given to them, when they really must consider getting someone on base and sacrificing him.

I have a feeling that we might see a legitimate third party in the near future. How it solidifies will be a test of time.

  16. wolfsinger says:

I confess, I am very concerned about the Republican party’s emergence as deeply crazy, hateful and “warriors for Jesus” as represented by Hannity, Overlord Limbaugh, Beck and a host of really crackpot congresspeople (who keep getting reelected)

Sure the party is getting smaller. Sure America views the party as pegging the weirdness meter. But, that’s the point. Politics is politics and America’s voting public repeatedly demonstrates that it has a very short memory. We are quick to let even the issue of torture slide being more worried about who stays or goes on “Idol”.

The Republican’s best weapon is fear and they wield it best.

Driving moderates like Powell and what remains of any brain trust from the party for the likes of Cheney and Beck leaves them today with the most hideous intelligence.

An intelligence of fear the likes of Timothy McVeigh and Terry Nichols that will rise up like sharp swift knife should, heaven forbid, something terrible happen.

This is why is it so very important for the President to prosecute for war crimes. We must redefine what it means to be a Patriot in the coming days. Upholding the positive core values of our nation. We must to the unthinkable in American politics today – Hold our elected leaders accountable. Yes. We must act right away to remind today’s voters and tomorrows also, what it means to be a Patriot or sure as shooting, today’s Republican party will do it for us.

  17. Zimzone says:

Purple State Says: I have a feeling that we might see a legitimate third party in the near future.

I hope you’re right. I, for one, am ready to listen to ideas that aren’t bought, sold & owned by corporate interests.

We need to put the fear of not being re-elected in ALL Congresscritters.

We need campaign reform that allows any American with good ideas and solid principles to run for office without borrowing umpteen million dollars.

We need the general electorate establishing agendas for change, not backroom former pols who ‘know the inside track’ on the beltway and can be bought for huge fees.

We need true public discourse on health care reform while not letting 3rd party insurance brokers dictate pay & coverage.

We need education institutions that are accessible, not ivory towers awash in special interest donations and multi-million dollar admin salaries.

We need to incorporate global participation / collaboration as a tool for humanity to preserve our planet.

None of the above can be accomplished via a 2 party system.
A third element in this mix is our only salvation.
    *gets down off soapbox*

    ConservativeForProgress Says:

It is true that there is an ongoing tug-of-war in the Republican party between Conservatives and Moderates, just as there is an ongoing tug-of-war in the Democratic party between the Socialist/Progressive/Liberal wing and the Moderates.

I don’t think these “tugs-of-war” are on the same level, however. The GOP’s tug-of-war threatens to destroy the fabric of the party. I don’t see that in the Democratic Party’s disagreements.

  19. Mikala says:

Anytime Powell wants to leave the republicans he is more than welcome in the Democrat party. If there were more republicans like the general then this Nation would be much better off and more would get done to move this Nation forward.

  20. Intrepid says:

“Rush Limbaugh says, ‘Get out of the Republican Party.’

Get out of the country Limpdick!

  21. pbeeg says:

I don’t trust the folks who actually run the Republican Party–the rich folks who want to maintain their privilege and control.
What I think they’re doing is allowing all this Palin Limbaugh madness to blw itself out–and then actually rebrand.
What I think is far more likely than a Palin/Limbaugh ticket is running yet another young, rich white Republican who’ll lie about how he’s a ‘New Kind of Republican”–not afraid to excoriate Bush and Cheney and Limbaugh, and full of ‘Return to the Center’ rhetoric–and paired up with Powell. Maybe even Powell for Prez and Dan Quayle 3.0 as vice.
Powell would be more of a threat to the Democrats than anybody else in the Party.
And don’t think he doesn’t know it.

  22. shoeless says:

It is true that there is an ongoing tug-of-war in the Republican party between Conservatives and Moderates,

    What a joke.

Most traditional conservatives and moderates have already left the party. There is no tug of war. Your fu(ked up party was an unholy marriage between global corporatists, imperialist neocons, and theocratic Christo-fascists. Now, that Frankenstein monster has fractured, and all the kings horses, and all the kings men can’t put it back together again.

  24. buzzbomb says:

STFU Powell, you will NEVER live down the fact that you lied your ass off in front of the United Nations. Who gives a ratsfck about the Republican Party infighting. Let them eat each other. The two sides here frankly both still suck and Powell isn’t gonna lend creditibility to sht.

  25. AIO grasshopper says:

Don’t forget, Powell also showed up at the Bush ranch during the 2000 campaign that help George get elected in a historically close election.

  26. glogrrl says:

“Democrat” party? Mikala, you wouldn’t be a little troll, would you? If not, please use the proper name for the party in power.

  27. kwsventures says:

Powell worked for Republican administrations. That doesn’t make him a Republican. I have heard Powell’s view on lots of standard issues. Powell was never a conservative, libertarian or anything even close.
