ThinkFast: May 20, 2009

ap050207015053

Yesterday, Senate Democrats “rejected President Obama’s request for funding to close the Guantanamo Bay prison and vowed to withhold federal dollars until the president decides the fate of the facility’s 240 detainees.” “The feeling was at this point we were defending the unknown,” Sen. Dick Durbin (D-IL) said. “We were asked to defend the plan that hasn’t been announced.”

In a 22-page decision last night, a federal judge “rejected aspects of the Obama administration’s definition of who can legally be held as a prisoner in the war on terror.” U.S. District Court Judge John Bates ruled that while members of al Qaeda or the Taliban could be detained, “mere support for Al Qaeda activities is not a sufficient basis for the government to hold prisoners at Guantanamo Bay or elsewhere.”

More than one in four of President Bush’s Cabinet “have landed jobs with consulting or lobbying firms in which they can help clients navigate the departments they once oversaw.” Ten of the 34 Cabinet secretaries that served under Bush — including Michael Chertoff, John Ashcroft, Tom Ridge, and Gale Norton — “have registered as lobbyists or joined consulting or lobbying firms” or “sit on the boards or work for industries they regulated.”

An RNC showdown over a resolution calling on Democrats to rename themselves the “Democrat Socialist party” may be avoided. Chairman Michael Steele has said it is “not an appropriate way to express our views on the issues of the day.” One of the sponsors of the resolution said that the “language is being changed so that the proposers and chairman Steele are on the same page.”

Aides to Senate Finance Committee Chairman Max Baucus (D-MT) “held a private meeting on Monday with a bloc of prominent Democratic lobbyists, warning them to hold their fire or be left out of negotiations” on how the health care plan would be structured.

In a new “strategy memo,” GOP staffers on the Senate Committee on Environment and Public Works say they will try to make the argument that Democrats are coddling Big Business. Democrats are embracing “Wall Street traders,” “polluters” and “others in corporate America” who are “guilty of manipulating national climate policy to increase profits on the backs of consumers,” the memo states.

“Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano has announced only one formal change” from Bush administration policy on immigration: limiting workplace raids. Under the new policy, investigators “must give priority to prosecuting employers” instead of targeting employees. “Obama advisers say more changes are coming to Bush’s immigration policies.”

Advocates of gun rights are poised to win a Congressional victory that eluded them under a Republican president,” as President Obama is poised to sign legislation allowing loaded and concealed weapons in national parks. The provision was attached to a popular credit card reform bill that passed the Senate 90-5 yesterday.

A congressional investigation has found that the U.S. Army “paid ‘tens of millions of dollars in bonuses’ to KBR Inc, its biggest contractor in Iraq, even after it concluded the firm’s electrical work had put U.S. soldiers at risk.” KBR “has been linked to at least two, and as many as five, electrocution deaths of U.S. soldiers and contractors in Iraq due to ’shoddy work.’”

And finally: Tomorrow, the Pittsburgh Steelers will be at the White House to meet with President Obama, but linebacker James Harrison won’t be joining his team. According to a “well-placed source,” Harrison “has a fear of flying and is a ‘wreck’ whenever he must take team flights.” “Hey, James ain’t changed,” Harrison responded. “I guess my profile did but I didn’t change. I’m not going because I don’t want to go.” He also jokingly added that he heard the White House is in a “bad neighborhood.”

THE STRONG HANKERING TO DEVELOP STANDARDS FOR THE PROTECTION OF INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY RIGHTS AND THE OPEN FORUM OF THE INTERNET.

Let it not be said that I did not register my utter distate, after reading of the fiasco of Maureen Dowd’s brain-cramp copying of some blogger’s creation without credit. I was however reminded of the fact that this blogger is also the owner of the site which contained the pilfered property, giving them unbounded access to all of the commentary from other posters in their archives. I desisted from posting there after a single post I made disappeared from the archives. The cheek.

For an example, here’s a string from TP’s own http://thinkprogress.org/terms/:

[...]we may provide authorship credit by listing your name as well[...]

I could not locate this other blogger’s terms of use, but isn’t what’s good for the goose as well for the gander?

A cruise through any blog’s commentary archives and comparison to the live resident posts would present my inference in clear lights.

Based on TP’s Terms above, it would seem like it would be okay for Maureen Dowd to have used the material without credit, even though a personality of her coat should have known how disappointing it could be to behold your creative material being pilfered in real time, without the benefit of a single mention of credit.

It is the most lawless copycat/plaigiarist-friendly environment ever conceived, aided by the anonymity that posters choose to operate under.

My advise would be to characterize and not indict. To say someone deserves to be jailed, shot and its legion, is a characterization based on a considered opinion as granted by the Bill of Rights. To describe someone as a criminal is an indictment and could expose one to possible libel action. Steer away from the latter situation and you would not need to hide behind any weird identities to express yourself. Use the latter situation with a clear satirical drift or if you have the goods on this person etc. You would only use anonymity in special cases then and it would be ok too. This would at least, give the rogues a nudge to remind them to offer credit to the real person they are “borrowing” from.

This link captures the characterize angle:
    http://thinkprogress.org/2009/05/01/post-waterboarding-torture/#comment-5625400

Not a single blogger interviewed for the second volume of Gene X Portrait of a Liberal Blogger could come up with a valid reason why they choose to post anonymously almost always.

The use of real names would have the effect of reducing the dreary deluge of constantly drowning, in the schizo-crap of the site-financed per-post-pay geeks, instead of reading posts of intelligent, smooth-flowing discourse.

Tell me why you would continue to read a blog that the first comment either had a F-Bomb, or a veiled death-threat etc, in all of their literary manifestations; Especially since it can
be argued that these unnecessary distractions come from the site-financed trolls themselves.

All of these are soldiers who have died under the command of Commander in Chief Barack H. Obama as a result of wars begun and bungled by his predecessor in office. For some reason, people at TP stopped keeping track of military deaths once Pres. Obama took his oath of office, but these brave men and women should not be forgotten.

Funny, but it was wingnuts like yourself that condemned CBS for displaying a list like this on television. Wingnuts like yourself accused CBS of treason for undermining the war effort. I guess it’s different when a wingnut does it.

Perhaps you assumed that a competent president would be able to stop military deaths just by waving his magic wand. You truly are delusional.

This is just unfreakingbelievable. The Republican Party is in the crapper and Republicans are spending their time trashing Democrats in absurd ways instead of fixing what’s wrong.

If I made cars that tended to lose their steering and swerve into ditches a lot, would it make more sense for me to fix the problems with the car, or launch a huge marketing campaign claiming that swerving off roads is a great thing and that my competitor’s cars will kill you?

Yeah, that happens in war. The fact remains that they died fighting in wars started and mismanaged by President Bush. What’s your point? Did you expect people to stop planting roadside bombs just because a guy with two Arabic names moved into the White House?

  14. Marie says:

CFP kept quiet about the 4,000+ who died under Bush’s illegal war, and he derided anyone who brought up the topic.
Now, however, that Obama is president and has announced the withdrawal of troops and the end of the war in Iraq, and is planning to do so in a responsible manner, in carefully managed steps, he finds it serves his purpose to point out that soldiers are still dying.
Yes, sadly, they are — but none of them would be so were it not for George Bush and Dick Cheney and Donald Rumsfeld and Condoleeza Rice.
    STFU.

  15. A Patriotic Anopheles Acting says:

Hey CFP why don’t you go Cheney yourself dry until you bleed to death? Do you ever have something to add to a discussion other than utter stupidity and divisiveness? Any soldier that perished in Iraq should not have died because they never should have been there in the first place. Furthermore if Bush hadn’t all but ignored Afghanistan and bin Laden for years and years maybe we wouldn’t still have to be there now finishing what he should have done long ago dipshit. Do you truly want to honor the brave men and women who sign up to protect our Country? Then get your pansy neoconservative @ss down to the nearest recruiting station and sign up! I find it repugnant that a neocon shill such as yourself feigns empathy for our soldiers when for the last eight years you were more than happy to see tham used as cannon fodder in George Bush’s war of fancy.

The Bush administration, in its final months, had pushed through a rule change that would have allowed the guns, but in March a federal judge blocked the change. The Obama administration chose not to appeal the decision while a review of potential impacts was made.

I CANNOT BELIEVE this outrageous crap that because we need a credit card policy that does NOT continue to ‘rip off’ average people, we MUST ALSO INCLUDE a policy that ‘concealed weapons can now be carried in parks’ [where children are playing, etc]. Have the phucking R’s lost their minds?

As much as I DESPISE the credit card companies for their THEFT of late fees and every other fee they can think of in order to steal easy money, I phucking DETEST the R’s for the inclusion of this legislature and the only means of passing it is to stick it in with credit card legislation!! For instnace, Pfc. Adam J. Hardt, 19, of Avondale, Arizona, died March 22, 2009, at Forward Operating Base Airborne in Wardak Province, Afghanistan, of injuries suffered from a non-combat related incident. “One of the Youngest Soldiers to die since 1/20/9″

The fact that Pfc. Hardt of the 2nd Battalion, 87th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division (Light Infantry), Fort Drum, New York was deployed in early January 2009 would mean that his deployment orders would have come from the Bush Administration.

And as a 19 year-old Pfc. Hardt would have joined-up whilst Bush was Commander in Chief.

But the important thing for conservaiveforprogress is not to honor Pfc. Hardt,(or anyone else for that matter) but to blame his death on Barack Obama, where if any blame is to be laid it would be at George bush’s feet.

    _____________________________________________________________

Yes, but it’s all he has. CFP’s entire raison d’être is to bash President Obama at every opportunity — grasping anything he can find, even if he has to move the goalposts around constantly.

Currently, his standard for acceptability is for Obama to have removed ALL troops out of harm’s way the second he took office, so no American soldiers would die on his watch. Even though that would be logistically impossible (the BEST estimates on how long a withdrawal from Iraq and Afghanistan would take is several months). And as long as we have soldiers over there, some are going to die. But this is Bush’s mess, not Obama’s.

The other thing CFP apparently expects from our new president is that all of his campaign promises (about DADT and many other things) be fulfilled on his first day on the job.

Even if Obama DID have a magic wand and could clean up all Bush’s messes instantly, CFP would find some other lame thing to complain about. After all, he’s just a troll.

“Teabagging” has two meanings only in the liberal world, because the phrase “ can you please stick you balls in my face again” got a little old and stale.

Why? Because you say it over and over?

No because invitations reading “join us this Friday night for a riveting game of ball on face twister” had to much of a reviling name so, out of necessity the wonderful liberal term was created “Teabagging”

Great going, guys. You’ve spun watchpup around so many times he’s dizzy, and typing words in the wrong order again.

It’s much easier to make fun of his comments when they approximate conversational English. When he gets like this, it’s just impossible.

So you are saying that Larry Craig and Ted Haggard are liberals?

And how come you get these invitations and I don’t?
Does that make you a liberal and me a conservative?

  64. Zimzone says:

I’m not buying Watchpup’s argument about teabagging.

Watchpup, you have to HAVE BALLS to teabag. And as far as you playing ‘cysted twister’ on Fridays, please…keep that to yourself.

Good Morning and another Happy Hump Day to all…Gonna be way off topic here this morning, what else is new…Good post BearCountry and others…

I get lots of mail from many groups and solo writer’s, about 125 a day in fact…One I have been watching and reading for some time seems to be of my same mind set.”.Winter Patriot”…Todays note was most interesting and reminded me of a conversation I had with an old fisherman on Sunday…

The old man told me he always thought of himself as a Rep. because he was fiscally conservative, he had voted for Obama because he was an old vet and thought President Obama would end the war’s and he had not been pleased with the way the Rep.s had ruined our country..The old man then told me he was upset because he thought Obama was to liberal…..We spoke for nearly 2 hours..Funny thing is I have always been a bleeding heart liberal and knew Obama was a right leaning centerest compared to me…When we ended the discussion found out that old man and I were both on the same page…We laughed at the fact neither of us fit the stereo type of Dem’s, Rep’s or centerests..We concluded both of us were much farther to the left than we had thought and discovered we were both fan’s of Finegold and Kucinich..

My point here is, none of us can be put in a box or party, none of us can be labeled all the time the same way and none of us will agree with the way the political hack’s play chess or any game…We are not allowed to be in their discussion’s indeed once most of them are elected we are not in their mind untill their next campaign roll’s around..We are a long way off to the next election so look’s like we must suck it up untill the next cycle of a few week’s when they act like they are listening….. Happy posting….P.B. & J

Day 121 and DADT is still the policy under Commander in Chief Obama.
    —–

Again I feel the need to post this since CFP is obviously being an idiot again and has no concept of military law.

Yes, he could repeal the policy but it would then be illegal to be gay in the military regardless of whether you “Don’t ask or don’t tell” Other laws needs to be dealt with as well. The man has been in office as you said 121 days not years. Give it time.

Try serving your country and learn a little something about the UCMJ. Laws don’t work quite the same way. For instance did you know officers are not allowed to engage in oral sex? Sorry but I thought that was funny lol.

  69. kdgamergirl says:

All of these are soldiers who have died under the command of Commander in Chief Barack H. Obama. For some reason, people at TP stopped keeping track of military deaths once Pres. Obama took his oath of office, but these brave men and women should not be forgotten.
    —-

and yes these brave men and women should not be forgotten BUT Obama is not the one who started these rediculous wars, he just has to fix them. More soldiers will unfortunetly die. It’s a risk we know when we enlist. It is BS to blame it on Obama and you know it.

From the same guy who claimed that 7000 soldiers were killed during the Clinton years, ignoring the fact that none of those deaths were combat related.

  77. Daddy-O says:

More than one in four of President Bush’s Cabinet “have landed jobs with consulting or lobbying firms in which they can help clients navigate the departments they once oversaw.” Ten of the 34 Cabinet secretaries that served under Bush — including Michael Chertoff, John Ashcroft, Tom Ridge, and Gale Norton — “have registered as lobbyists or joined consulting or lobbying firms” or “sit on the boards or work for industries they regulated.”

    I don’t understand. What’s your point, TP?

EVERY administration does this. EVERY member of a Cabinet management team ends up working in the private sector, eventually. That’s why they do it–Republican AND Democrat.

Here’s MY point: It is amazing that only one in four veterans of the Bush administration have been hired, and not at least HALF of them. Incompetent? Criminal? Bad reputations? Take your pick.

But to slam anyone who served the government for cheap who now is trying to make a living post-service is a low blow. It’s not automatically suspect or criminal or even immoral. Yes, it’s a symptom of our lobbyist culture, but, boy, am I ever tired of hearing the whining about THAT one…

  78. Mycelium says:

Lots and lots about repealing DADT lately. I know the policy turned out way different than it was intended, but at the time, it WAS considered a major victory for the Clinton administration and the gay community. It cracked to door for gays serving in the military at all. It was pointed out last night that the country might have been misled by the media propaganda (as this was basically before the internet,) but still…it was advancement over previous military doctrine. Seemed fair enough to most people. The military wouldn’t ask your sexual orientation and you didn’t have to tell them.

DADT is a good policy in PRINCIPAL for both hetro and homosexuals. It’s nobodies business what goes on in another person’s bedroom let alone the militaries. I can only ill imagine what goes on in some of the bedrooms of a few hetro military brass anyway…a little twisted comes to mind. I doubt they tell anyone, and in fairness, they shouldn’t be asked either. The injustice lies in that if the sex happens to be homosexual…there goes your military career if discovered.

I’m narrowing the subject to sex its self. I wasn’t in the military but I believe sex of any kind “on duty” is a serious violation of the rules. I’d imagine even more so in a combat situation where ANOYNE should be kicked out for that violation. What do the homophobes think is going to happen that doesn’t happen already? I know over 12k have been discharged since DADT was enacted but I’m sure many homosexuals are serving today. ANY sex should be off duty and behind closed doors with no bearing on your “job” whatsoever.

Seriously, what is being expected to gain from repealing DADT? IMHO, keep the core principal of DADT but lose the part where you lose your career because of your sexual preference.

I just hope this issue is settled once and for all ASAP. The energy focused on this issue is sorely needed elsewhere.

That’s a g*dd*mned f**king lie. You just lost whatever respect I had for your comparatively mellow demeanor.

I read salon.com every day. I read other headline news services. At least once a week they update the war dead, and just a day or so ago they announced the 700th US soldier to be killed in Afghanistan since Emperor Bush’s incompetent invasion and installation of his puppet President Unocal executive Hamid Karzai.

Nobody has stopped counting the dead from Bush’s Wars. Nobody.

What’s your solution, Con4Progress? Is it the same as mine? Obama said he refused to release those awful torture/sodomy-with-children photos because it would put our troops in harm’s way. To which I say:

Bring home the troops. Now. Today. Then they won’t be in danger.

    Do you agree, Con?
