Santorum: ‘Conservatives believe in the stewardship of patrimony.’

Last night on Fox News, former senator Rick Santorum told Greta Van Susteren that the Republican party “has to stand up for conservative principles.” They have to support the “patrimony” against “a guy named Barack Obama” who wants to upend “our social structure”:

SANTORUM: The other thing we have to do is we have to stand up and say, look, America — Conservatives believe in the stewardship of patrimony. In other words, there are things in America that are really good, that work, have worked for 200 years. And we have a guy named Barack Obama who’s trying to fundamentally rewrite everything, change our economy, change our social structure, change our economy to something new.

Santorum also praised the 75 percent of Californians who did not vote in yesterday’s special election, “because they knew enough that they didn’t know enough to vote.” Watch it:

Part of that “patrimony” that has “worked for 200 years” — besides limited franchise — is apparently the subjugation of women. Santorum has declared that birth control is “harmful to women” and “harmful to society.” And in his book, “It Takes A Family,” he railed against “radical feminists” who “succeeded in undermining the traditional family and convincing women that professional accomplishments are the key to happiness.”

Not coincidentally, Americans increasingly do not believe in allowing conservatives to run their government.

Man-on-dog Santorum: And we have a guy named Barack Obama who’s trying to fundamentally rewrite everything, change our economy, change our social structure, change our economy to something new.

And “something new” is to be FEARED!

At least we know Man-on-Dog Santorum is a True Conservative.

Santorum = another one who would prefer that the decade of the 1950s never ended, that the Protestant Reformation had never occurred, that the Catholic Mass was still said only in Latin, and that ALL OF US could be subject to the authority of the Pope.

  9. ralph the wonder locust says:

    “Patrimony”? Is he serious?

Here are the various definitions for “patrimony”:

Property or other legal entitlements inherited from (or through) one’s father, especially if it has been handed down through generations in the same family, birthright.

So Ricky Man-on-Dog is all about protecting the wealth of rich kids who were born on third base and quickly decide that they’ve hit a triple.

The sum total of all personal and real entitlements, including movable and immovable property, belonging to a real person or a moral person.

I thought “entitlements” were a bad thing, Ricky?

the envelop that contains all of a person’s rights and obligations which can be assigned a monetary value under the French legal system.

OMG! The FRENCH legal system! But — but — but — they’re socialists!!!

I’m glad Ricky Man-on-Dog is no longer in a posiiton of power. And I’m also glad that despite his loser status, he still gets a national forum to continue to tar the Republican Party with his own particular brand of Stupid.

Hmmm…wasn’t Abraham Lincoln accused of trying to “change our social structure” and “change our economy” by ending slavery? Is Santorum suggesting that things would have been better now if no changes had been made in that department?

A lot of the “things in America that are really good, that work, have worked for 200 years” are things that are only “really good” for wealthy, white, heterosexual males with northern European surnames. Those of us who don’t fit that mold beg to differ.

Hey, Little Ricky! Wouldn’t we just know that you would rear your ugly puss on the same day that Darth Cheney farted loudly at the AEI with his usual concoction of half-baked ideology, innuendo, outright lies and faux-patriotism.

Well, Little Ricky, I have one message for both you and Darth:

    Function:
    noun
    Etymology:
Middle English patrimoine, patrimonie, from Anglo-French patremoine, from Latin patrimonium, from patr-, pater father
    Date:
    14th century
1 a: an estate inherited from one’s father or ancestor b: anything derived from one’s father or ancestors : heritage
2: an estate or endowment belonging by ancient right to a church
    — pat·ri·mo·ni·al \?pa-tr?-?m?-n?-?l\ adjective

In other words, Santorum, and others like him, think that they are entitled to this because it’s their right or “social structure”.

Then again, maybe Little Ricky meant to say “stewardship of palimony”. It is a rich and common republican philosophy I am told.

  24. Tired Of Fighting says:

SANTORUM: “Conservatives believe in the stewardship of patrimony. In other words, there are things in America that are really good, that work, have worked for 200 years. Like keeping people who look like Barack Obama from ever being President.” There fixed it for ya.

  29. 666cicadas says:

They have no one to blame, but themselves. Are we supposed to somehow believe that Bush was a steward of said “patrimony”? If so, then why wasn’t it working for the country?

If not, then why not shift the blame where it belongs… any amount of “Socialism” that Obama uses is merely an attempted solution to fix what the Bush Administration destroyed.

Again, they have no one to blame, but themselves. Nice try, though… kind of.

    Doesn’t pass the smell test.

  32. fletc3her says:

Expecting intellectual honesty from Rick Santorum is like expecting moral clarity from Dick Cheney, but one of the big problems with the Republican party today is that they do not lead as if they believe in the principles which they claim to support. Over the last eight years they have enthusiastically embraced an increase in the size of government, the use of our military power for nation building, new social programs, new bureaucracies, massive national debt, the abandonment of conservation, reliance on foreign powers for energy and even military procurement, the use of mercenaries rather than our armed forced, not to mention committing atrocities in the name of national defense. I’m no Republican, but I don’t think that most of their erstwhile supporters like a lot of that stuff any more than the rest of us do.

  33. Xisithrus says:

We dont do kings or royalty in America, Santorum, if you want that stuff move to another country that does.

  34. Cats r Flyfishn says:

    From Merriam-Webster…

Patrimony: 1 a: an estate inherited from one’s father or ancestor b: anything derived from one’s father or ancestors : heritage 2: an estate or endowment belonging by ancient right to a church

  37. StratRat says:

Conservatism is dying right before our eyes. The GOP can only resurrect itself with the help of the younger Americans – who don’t bleieve in 75% of what the GOP stands for. Young people are not getting on board the GOP cult-train because of gay rights issues, religous issues, bigoty issues, rascism issues, holier than thou issues, white party issues, authoritarian issues, etc…

In other words – all the positions the GOP holds dear. The GOP is stuck as the party of wealthy, overweight and overbearing guys trying to appear hip (I’m looking at you Michael Steele). Change in the form of a tea bag! WTF!

  38. jbrantow says:

Rick Santorium…the man who brought his still born child home from the hospital so his other kids (toddlers) could hold (play) with the dead baby and “say goodbye to it”. Yea that’s someone I want dictating morals to the rest of society.

    ConservativeForProgress Says:

I have no idea what this guy is talking about with phrases like “the stewardship of patrimony,” but he doesn’t speak for all Conservatives.

Sure he does. You all may use different words to explain your positions, but the intent is all the same. The have’s get to keep what they have, and the have not’s can scape by on the table droppings left by folks like Santorum.

The GOP sees itself as the wise and capable group. The planet sees them as yesterday’s news – and rightly so.

  48. hormiga brava chavez says:

Santorum has entitlement syndrome. He wants things to go back to the way it used to be when white men controlled everything and had all of the wealth. Santorum can just go to he11 because we’re not going to the back of the bus EVER again. The country is moving forward and people like Santorum will be left behind.

  49. Rosencrantz says:

Uhmmm…sorry Santorum, but there is a WORLD of difference between “has worked for 200 years” and “worked 200 years ago and Republicans are going to use fear to keep those policies alive for ever regardles of whether or not they actually apply today”.

Seems to me Republicans, especially Santorum, is very much confusing the latter for the former. Republican policies and beliefs are no longer relevant to the modern world. They are living in a past that not only doesn’t apply any more, but an idealized version of that past that is better in their heads than it ever really was.

As a result, the party is now extremely suffering. Younger and younger generations have been moving more and more away from Republican’s unrealistic and hypcritical ideals. Mainly because as the world moves on and advances, they continue to preach nothing more than “do as I say, not as I do” and “sure my rich family gave me everything I had, but YOU should work hard an earn it…just as long as it doesn’t come from me or I will fight you tooth and nail.”

  51. candide says:

Good thought, Santorum! Yes, congratulations on not voting, all you know-nothings. That should be great news for Rethugs, who thrive on voter apathy and ignorance.

That’s twisted, alright, but not jbrantow’s take, Rick’s mind. God’s will be done, the fetus died anyway. Perhaps God gave us the knowledge to save the burden of the prolonged situation. (I’ve always liked The Ciderhouse Rules take on the issue).

Oh, the good ol’ days. I mean, even if we just stick with the 20th century, there is so much to remember with fondness.

Ah, the days when a white man could lynch a pesky person of color, who can forget those good ol’ times. Largely unimpeded violence against women, who couldn’t want that cornerstone of the American way of life back.

I know, personally, as a Chicano man it offends me deeply that I’m allowed to eat and shop wherever I like. Helllloooooooooooo! Or, who could forget herding the mentally ill into hellish “warehouse” type facilities.

It’s downright unAmerican not to be able to shame divorced women publicly. Some of the noblest Americans are not being put down. Why isn’t it cool to talk about eugenics to rid ourselves of the “undesirables?” Why is it so bad to have racists scientists from fields as disparate as morphology to genetics talking about the those darn “colored’s” being, essentially, an inferior species.

Yup, Ol’ Rick just wants them good ol’ days back. Those golden days when a white man could intimidate and abuse fellow Americans as God intended. F-you Santorum.

  65. CageyCretin says:

Oh, my, little Ricky. Did you lose that number to the psychologist?

But, seriously, “there are things in America that are really good, that work, have worked for 200 years“?

Well — you have three qualifiers here: “things that are ‘good’”, “things that work”, and “have worked for 200 years”. What things, specifically, meet all three criteria? (here’s some crayons so you can draw the Venn diagrams).

Marriage certainly does NOT: separation, spousal abuse, and divorce rates show that marriage, and espescially your “traditional marriage” does not “work”.

The corporate model of today is not the model of 200 years ago, so that fails (plus all the depressions and recessions have been because of the business models in place, and “corporate personhood” did not exist 200 years ago — I believe it did not exist 100 years ago).

Worker’s rights and conditions have changed considerably over 200 years, so nothing about the workplace, top down, can fit your criteria.

I could go on, but eating food to sustain our bodies has ‘worked’ for 200 years. Breathing air has ‘worked’ for 200 years. You are going to have to get that basic to fit those criteria.

Ricky — your conditions, when applied, argue against that which you are trying to defend. You, Ricky, are a moron speaking gibberish.

  67. gillianb says:

I guess if Rick/Dick Sanatorium believes in Patrimony, he doesn’t support Matrimony. Right?

Or is the key to his thinking that he wishes to return to the days of yesteryear? Ah, for the good old days, when white men of property ran everything. There was no room in the thinking of our founding fathers for women, for people of color (black, yellow or red in today’s parlance), or for other white men who did not have any estates or acreage to give them legitimacy.

Fortunately for all of us, the good people of Pennsylvania did the right thing and got rid of him. Now, it is the turn of our beloved media to show sense and judgment and not give this private citizen a podium that he does not deserve.

    Happy Holiday

  68. KiP says:

The first time I really wanted to hit Santorum was when he went to Florida for Terrie Schiavo.

That Sciavo case still grinds my gears. The whole GOP stance about marriage? One of the legal rights of marriage is that the spouse is the decider when it comes to pulling the plug, isn’t that right? So, Terri’s husband should’nt’ve been harangued.

But, then, consistency isn’t a Republican’s strong suit (you’re “pro-life” but support war and the death penalty?)..
