Senate Republicans block vote on Obama judicial nominee.

Bloomberg reports today that “Republicans temporarily blocked Senate committee action on President Barack Obama’s first judicial appointment, attacking the nominee for rulings based on separation of church and state.” The GOP, led by Sen. Jeff Sessions (R-AL), are attempting to challenge the fitness of U.S. District Judge David Hamilton of Indiana to be promoted to a federal appeals court in Chicago. Senate Democrats postponed a preliminary vote on Hamilton as the GOP raised objections to Hamilton, calling him “controversial” and “troubling.” As ThinkProgress has noted, Republicans have previously distorted Hamilton’s rulings regarding “non-sectarian prayers” in the Indiana House of Representatives.

The party of the “up-or-down-vote” shows off its hypocrisy once again ……

  2. Megaloptera McWars says:

How about the nuclear option, where they undertake a full-scale invasion of the judiciary committee and bomb away for nine years or more?

  3. spencers mom says:

Wait, I thought that the Judiciary Committee was now even more Democrat-heavy since Specter’s defection. How are the GNOP able to pull off anything like this?

  4. PatrioticLiberalChristianMantisReligiosa says:

As a Christian, I can accept members of Congress praying before a session. However, the Democrats should pray in their cars before they get to the chambers and the Republicans should pray while in their closets ;), as the Bible advises.

  5. linkwray says:

This tactic will be used ad infinitum until the next election and it’s the only way jerks like Sessions can get air time. The media is helping the Repugs look like cautious parents but really there nothing more than judgmental scolds and overbearing bores. The Grand Old Partypoopers are mad because they can’t keep time with the new music being played. Nobody wants to do waltzes any more, oh boo hoo.

  6. Megaloptera McWars says:

When Harry Reid gets through capitulating we’ll need 70 votes to pass anything.

  7. SWBob says:

The repubs can’t do anything else. They have catered to the extreme elements in their party for so long that moving to a moderate position cannot happen. Additionally, the Dems, even when they have the numbers, have shown that they dont’ have the political will to play hard ball with the miniority party. So, why should the Reps fold on anything? They will always get some of what they want regardless of the logic of their positions.

  8. Megaloptera McWars says:

    O/T

Good for Nancy on standing by her previous remarks and affirming to people with brains that there’s no controversy. The lemming reporters are so eager for controversy, they’ll fall for the diversionary plot of the fringe right-wing minority. They’re so stupid.

  9. Cats r Flyfishn says:

Looks like the Senate Republicans don’t believe in our Constitution nor do they care to uphold their oath to our Constitution. They must have secretly taken an oath to Rush Limbaugh.

  10. A Patriotic Anopheles Acting says:

So the Regressives were just fine with installing a torture enabler but block a man who follows the Constitution. Got it!

  11. Bilbo Hussein Baggins says:

The Party of No strikes again. I really do think that someone like Moveon.org should start running advertisements branding the Republics as the “Party of No”.

They find him “controversial” because of his rulings on keeping sectarian. religion out of government.

If Reid would just make them filibuster on every issue they want to block, sooner or later they will cut it out. But Harry the Spineless is still caving to them the way he did for the last two years of the Bush Rein of Terror.

  12. DeweyGland says:

With a racist, redneck, white-trash jerk like Jeff Sessions on the committee, what do you expect?

  13. ralph the wonder locust says:

So that whole “up or down vote” thing the Repubs were so hot for a few years ago… they’re a little flexible on that now?

  16. WaltinTexas says:

It’s been nothing but baseless obstructionism since the day Obama took office. What a joke Republicans have become.

  17. krystalview says:

  18. MadasHelinVA says:

Be honest, did ANY DEMOCRAT really EXPECT a different result? We knew going in that the CONS would do all they could to keep any Obama nominee [even J Christ] off the bench and this is ONLY THE BEGINNING!

  19. Xisithrus says:

They should have to take an oath to the people before every session and pledge not to be self-serving.

Besides that, just look at the political landscape today, these politicos regularly get on TV and create controversy.

  20. Marie says:

Repugs are only doing what they do best, throw fits and throw shit at everything Democratic. What amazes me is that we all see what they’re doing, yet they are allowed to continue these continuous spectacles of obstruction.

  21. Marie says:

Except for indulging themselves in this hystereical drama du jour, what do they expect to gain from a “temporary” block on the nominee?
When will we hear a Democrat (listen up, Reid!!) say, we want an up or down vote, now! and end the debacle. Didn’t the repugs claim that the president should get his nominees – or does that only apply to a repugniscum president?

The moonbats in congress attempted to scuttle every single nominee Bush proposed. Now these bed wetters are whining that the GOP might scrutinize some of their picks?

    Gee, how predictable…

  23. Perry logan says:

In case you were wondering why the Pubs have such low approval ratings. ;)

If there’s a self-defeating tactic or policy, the Republicans will use it. If you try to point this out to them, they just look stunned.

  24. Marie says:

Actually, Goingtobecensored, you will find that trolls are allowed to post here unlike the rightwing sites you are more accustomed to. However, continuous posts like your pointless one today will earn you lots of flags and earn you a removal.
So you can do it yourself!

As for Bush nominees, I see you have a very short memory. Whenever a nominee was objected to, the republicans would rise en masse, and declare their indignance that the president’s wishes not being heard, then demand an up or down vote, and the democrats were summarily pushed aside, ignored.

  25. glogrrl says:

Obviously you’re used to right-wing sites where dissent is considered against the Rules of Use. But thanksfor recognizing that the folks who run redstate and freeperville are “fascists”.

In fact trolls like you post here all the time. Just check out yesterday’s Porter Goss thread in which utterly worthless troll jay almost single-handedly ran the comment count to over 250. Or the Cheney Torture thread that featured the stellar work of several trolls accumulating more than 230 comments.

Evidence suggests that your knee-jerk assumption about being banned is mistaken.

The moonbats in congress attempted to scuttle every single nominee Bush proposed.

Around here, many of us find arguments like this far more persuasive when they’re supported by relevant links to objective source of information. Try it out. You might find it works for you.

Now these bed wetters are whining that the GOP might scrutinize some of their picks?

You mean “bed wetters” like Joe Barton (R-TX)? Or do you mean “bed wetters” who point out that Republicans, when they held the majority, declared that filibustering judicial nominees was “unconstitutional” and now decide that it’s what all the cool kids are doing?

    Gee, how predictable…

Indeed. We’ve seen comments like yours before, and we’ll see them again. They’re are regular as night following day.

  28. Realness says:

Please explain how the “fascists” on this site won’t allow any more. Marie said it right: it’s red state and free republic that will wipe you off their site without a thought for dissenting opinion.

  32. GoingToBeCensored69 says:

Of course Marie, I know your tiny intellect can’t grasp that fact that Bush had to resubmit 20 judicial nominees in his first term.

What’s funny to me is the fact that when the demand for an “up or down” vote came to pass, the fascists, I mean democrats (can’t tell the difference anyway) had no choice but to back down, because their objections were nothing more than partisan bickering, which they are now more than eager to accuse anyone else of.

Now it’s somehow a capital crime to oppose a presidential nominee, even if they’re a bolshevik.

  33. ralph the wonder locust says:

I see “goingtobecensored” recognizes that his attempt to get banned is a failure, so he’s going to fall back on garden-variety insults and delusions.

Too bad we can’t get TP to ban trolls for being boring.

Incidentally, have you noticed that obozo is literally doing nothing different than Bush, other than transferring sociopaths from Cuba to Colorado?

And I’d like to point out: Bush’s judicial nominees were often laughable cronies with no obvious qualifications and completely transparent agendas. Harriet Miers anyone? At least Republican obstruction has to make an effort finding a reason to oppose and Obama nomination.

I don’t defend Democrats moves as partisan in the past, but I agreed personally with a lot of dissent because there was some seriously scary individuals put forth by Bush (that actually made it, too, sigh) that are completely regressive.

Let’s see… abusive, taunting, spewing blanket insults at TPers…

Can’t think of a single reason why that would get someone with your sparkling wit and sagacity, not to mention your obvious commitment to constructive dialogue banned from the community.

Somehow, other trolls manage to hang on and disrupt threads, spout falsehoods and delusions and right-wing talking points for years without getting banned. I guess you just have a talent for making people intensely dislike you.

I’ve noticed when I do catch the occasional moonbat posting inane rants on conservative sites, they get blocked after they make no attempt at a rational argument, but continue to rave about Bush “war crimes”.

So communism is still keeping you up at night? I like your framing of the real issue, too. That we’re afraid to engage in the fact that communism killed 100 million people? I mean I guess there are people who identify as “communist.” But your oversimplification is ridiculous, makes you look ridiculous, it’s almost difficult to address one point you’re weakly making.

I’ll pick one: Please tally up the number that have been killed from exploitation at the hands of corporations and the govermnest that completely follow the whim of its financial elite? Ok a rational arguement finally. Yes Myers was a total crony joke. What you might have missed, was that conservatives were just as loud about shooting her down. In regards to my use of “fascist and bolshevik”, these words fit. As a teenager growing up I was taught that conservatives were “nazis”. After study of the National Socialist Workers Party, it was clear to me that my liberal friends and myself were far more in line with nazis than any conservatives I knew.

Doesn’t take much to amuse you. Especially since the first 3 examples you posted were militaristic dictatorship types who used invading other countries as a means of growing their power. Project much?

I’ll allow that many conservatives did shoot Miers down. But I would also state if you are going to parse decisions in the conservative camp into something more complicated, than I ask that you please allow the same for the left- which is just as complicated, full of disagreement and compromise. You do no service to any argument that you have by sloppily painting us “liberals’ with such a broad brush, using the words bolsheviks and fascists.

Your second paragraph puts you back squarely into troll grounds. “progressive” politics did not spawn fascism. It can be easly argued that it was completely corporatist and the logical end of capitalism.

Are you here to debate, or are you here to amuse yourself? The former requires some effort, the latter just makes you look like a jerk.

YOU tally the number, you’re the one making an allegation for which there’s absolutely no historical precedent.

Historical precedent? That’s a little disingenuous, and arrogantly sweeping aside any critical thought. I know many communist-identified people who’d say that deaths related to governments with the veneer of communism would not say that real communism had been achieved, possibly anywhere. Capitalism has been intertwined with imperialism and the fight for resources in many wars, has been the motivating factor of self-aggrandizing regimes for centuries, from the Opium Wars to the illegal invasion of Iraq.

You are not framing this argument, becaumse your framing is false.

And you might examine the “kill” record of Bush and Cheney—4,300 American soldiers, 100,000s of innocent Iraqis in an unnecessary war started by lies, not to mention those who died needlessly during Katrina because Rummy couldn’t be bothered and Dubya was playing golf in California. And then there’s those who have died over the last 8 years because they couldn’t afford health insurance and Georgie wouldn’t lift a finger to help “because the market works” (Wall Street?) and finally, the USSR is no more….communism has lost its sheen. Imperial Amerika is now the threat.

Again, portraying your inability to think critically by assuming that I support Barack Obama because I’m a “liberal,” when I never made any mention of that. What i’ve been trying to beat into your calcified brain is that the left is just as much a spectrum as your beloved conservatism.

My brand of progressivism wants money completely out of the equation- out of campaign finance and an end to the lobbying by corporations. Many conservatives are with me. There’s a lot of people on here that didn’t even *gasp* vote for Obama, and knew that the “change” he promised would be watered down due to money and politicking. But one thing most of us agree on is that we are in disagreement with GOP policies, politicians, and ideology almost wholesale.

um, funding for what? politicians’ summer homes? lobbying in and of itself isn’t bad, which is why I qualified it with “corporations.” Corporations invariably look to their own interests, and not those of people. They are free to register any opinion they have for legislation, but the use of money to enact legislation that serves them should be illegal.

I don’t really know about the senators thing. I know that the long terms and all the money makes them all seem like BFFs, heedless of their constituents’ needs or ideological difference they pretend to have. I’m not entirely sure about state representatives voting for the senators, but I don’t think I’ve ever thought about the situation as a comparison of effectiveness.

    To GoingToBeCensored69:

You have referred to the Democrats as “Fascists”. While a full description of this economic theory is far too complicated to described in full in this post, there are several key beliefs in Fascism that stand out.

One is the belief in Corporatism which is the belief that large corporations are better at managing and running the economy than a government even to the detriment of small businesses and individuals.

A second belief is in Nationalism. Nationalism, as opposed to Patriotism, fundamentally states that your country is the best and can do no wrong, completely ignoring the mistakes made by that country.

A third belief is the promotion of religious faith. Historically this has been Christianity in Europe and South America, but any religion could be used.

Each of these beliefs is deeply held by the Republican Party rather than the Democratic party, which would mean that the Republicans are the Fascists.

  73. Hoodathunktick says:

And also- are you implying that we need to periodically update the election process because people’s tendency is to distort the system for selfish gain? Democracy is such a hard thing to maintain even an imperfect version of. So much vigilance all the time. Complacent americans just want it to be locked down by the Constitution so they can get back to their TV shows, i guess.

Realness, I don’t know all the facts off the top of my head as far as the history of federal election laws go, but I think we both agree that the whole lobbyist and finacial status quo serves neither of our purposes. It’s late where I am, so I need to go, but you have been an entertaining character to argue with. I hope to do so again.

  78. Realness says:

and you too goingtobecensored. It got more entertaining when we got down to brass tacks, and didn’t start every post with fingerwagging and name calling. Just saying. tone it down and you’ll get debate.

I think the entertaining character award goes to the person called “goingtobecensored69.” it’s the 69 that really does it for me.

    ——————————
Ok, nonsense. Fascists were all about the STATE, corporations served the state, and did not exist without license from the state. Nationalism has served leftists just as well as libertarians. Stalin was certainly a nationalist for example. Italian fascists used religion, as well as leftists have. I certainly hope you don’t belive fascist italy was beholdened to the Holy see, but then again, you’ve been wrong this far…

I suspect that our begging-to-be-censored friend is the type who believes that every evil political ethos is based in liberalism, and the extreme manifestation of conservatism is maximum “freedom”.

Even though the extreme of what is known as contemporary liberalism would properly be seen as communism (state controls the means of production in an attempt to maximize the greatest good for the greatest number), and the extreme of conservatism would be fascism (corporatism controls the state in the belief that the free market provides the greatest freedom for the greatest number), somehow our angry friend wants to follow the lead of The Doughy Pantload and put fascism on the other side of the ledger.

    How convenient.

It’s hard to sleep when there’s so much stupidity out there.

Fascism is NOT the opposite of communism. Fascism is watered down socialism. The man who started the fascist party, Mussolini, was a champion of the european socialist movement.

Free Market libertarians believe the individual takes precident over the state, or any corporate lobby. It’s so simple I can’t believe I’m still awake attempting to explain it, but at least you folks aren’t as daft as the a$$hats in the daily kos.

    To GoingToBeCensored69:

You obviously have not studied economic structures, any type of political science, or even history. If you had, you would understand the posting I made.

These three elements, and many more, are constructs of Fascism. Yes, nationalism is one of many different beliefs that are contained in other political / economic structures.

It is a combination of elements that make up a particular political / economic structure, not just one or two that you pick out and say that since this belief is used in several different systems it doesn’t apply.

No, you are off topic and trolling, intentionally trying to make trouble. Plus you are an absolute idiot who does not know what the fk you are talking about.

If Buckie’s comment rests your case for you, then it’s clear that the only case you wanted to make was that you could annoy people enough so that they wouldn’t want you around anymore.

    Not a real big achievement.

  88. Hoodathunktick says:

GoingToBeCensored69 says: are you implying that we need to periodically update the election process because people’s tendency is to distort the system for selfish gain?

Nope, not implying but stating as fact. When a factor insinuates itself into the system where economic gain surpasses constituent input, it needs to be removed.

When lobbyists and special interests have more influence than the voting public, it is time to eliminate the problem.

“Of the people, by the people and for the people” Not corporate interests.

It’s clear you don’t know very much about fascism, and simply assume that all totalitarian regimes are the outgrowth of whatever you find evil in liberalism.

Since you brought up Mussolini, let’s hear what he had to say about fascism:

“This was a nationalistic, anti liberal, and anti socialist movement.”

    From Economic Expert:

Fascism (in Italian, fascismo), capitalized, refers to the right-wing authoritarian political movement which ruled Italy from 1922 to 1943 under the leadership of Benito Mussolini.

If you had shown any sophistication in thought up to this point, your continued insistence that fascism is a movement of the Left would eliminate any intellectual capital you had built up. As it is, however, no harm done.

  90. UCSBKitty says:

Just curious, did you read Liberal Fascism GTBC69?

  91. UCSBKitty says:

yes, doing away with unions which is one example of how “liberal” fascism is /snark…

Let me guess, Hitler was a liberal too?
