On this Memorial Day, the nation celebrates the sacrifice of veterans who gave their lives in service to our country. A “by-the-numbers” analysis by the Center for American Progress notes that veterans “are still in need of services to improve their quality of life—before, during, and after deployments. This year, the need is even more urgent than ever as the economic crisis hits many veterans and their families hard and these Americans struggle to find jobs, pay their mortgages, and get back on their feet.” Some key stats:
– 338,000 or almost one in five Iraq and Afghanistan veterans are experiencing symptoms of posttraumatic stress disorder, or PTSD, or major depression as of January 2009.
– Yet only 53 percent suffering from PTSD or major depression have seen a physician or mental health provider.
– 154,000 veterans were homeless on any given night in 2007, and 300,000 were homeless at some point during that year.
– One-third of homeless Americans are veterans, even though only one-tenth of all adults are veterans.
– Foreclosure rates in military towns were increasing at four times the national average in last year.
In his weekly address, President Obama said, “Our fighting men and women – and the military families who love them – embody what is best in America. And we have a responsibility to serve all of them as well as they serve all of us. And yet, all too often in recent years and decades, we, as a nation, have failed to live up to that responsibility. We have failed to give them the support they need or pay them the respect they deserve.”
“That is a betrayal of the sacred trust that America has with all who wear – and all who have worn – the proud uniform of our country,” Obama added. “And that is a sacred trust I am committed to keeping as President of the United States.” Watch it:
President Obama, how about bringing our soldiers home immediately. We can no longer sustain the cost of being in two failed wars. Our military is worn dangerously thin, our soldiers and national guardsman are getting burnt out.
Please Mr. President, open up a history book on Afghanistan and Iraq. You seem like a very intelligent man so why would you continue to put our brave soldiers in harms way in two countries where history has proven that it is a lost cause for a foreign country to attempt to occupy either country with it’s military.
May 25th, 2009 at 11:20 amI’m fully convinced that this is because Conservatives like a bloody war in which other people’s kids are brutally decimated, and they can watch 24/7 “news” coverage of it.
I might not agree with the President on everything when it comes to Afghanistan, but it sure is nice to have a man of reason rather than OT faith as commander-in-chief.

Happy Memorial Day.
May 25th, 2009 at 11:24 amAt last something I agree with Obama entirely on!
May 25th, 2009 at 11:30 am…and this is the same President who wanted to shift the burden of my V.A. care…to my private insurance company…so I can pay extra deductible payments…. for my care on my injuries while sustained on active duty!
You go ahead and drink the kool-aid…but he has already shown how much he really cares about us Vets.
May 25th, 2009 at 11:39 amUncle Fester,
I recently saw an interview with the President in which he explained that if we do not work with Afghanistan directly to help fight the Taliban, that we’re going to see them on our door step again. It’s a reasonable argument – even though I agree with what you said. I get the feeling he loses sleep over it… Tough to have to make that kind of decision.
May 25th, 2009 at 11:40 amBut the gay vets and active duty troops?
Never mind …
May 25th, 2009 at 11:41 amRealityCheck Says: …and this is the same President who wanted to shift the burden of my V.A. care…to my private insurance company…so I can pay extra deductible payments…. for my care on my injuries while sustained on active duty!
Actually, after he began to hear from people as to why they opposed this, he changed his mind and dropped it – something Heir Bush and Dick-tator Cheney never would have done. At least Obama serves the people, and not his wallet…
May 25th, 2009 at 11:43 amVeterans should be a top priority for our government. Knowing that some vets are homeless is unacceptable. Whatever any vet needs he or she should get from our government. Like uncle fester said above, bring our troops home know. The billions of dollars being spent on these wars would be better spent on our veterans.
May 25th, 2009 at 11:46 amHey RealityCheck – how ’bout the Repugs starting a war with inferior armor, inferior tactics, inferior leadership and inferior contractors (you try taking a shower over there?). I’ll take Obama’s brand of support over Bush/Cheney/Rove’s any day!
May 25th, 2009 at 11:51 amWell, sure, all the veterans have sacrificed, but what about Bush? Damn, that guy gave up golf for years outta respect for the troops. Okay, so he only kinda gave up the game and it was because of the appearance of golfing while he sent brave soldiers to die for his game of Risk: Middle East Version. But now that he’s back to his game, no one is honoring him for his sacrifice!
PEACE

I agree and understand his dilemma but why are we the only ones who are fighting the Taliban? Where is the rest of the free world? I say bring all of the troops home, invest in security measures to protect our ports, put our military along the Southern border and worry about our own country for a change. All the billions of dollars saved by not being in two Bush created clusterphucks can be used to protect our own country and it’s infrastructure.

VA care? Isn’t that like socialized medicine? I thought “conservatives” want all health care to be privatized, because the government can’t do anything right.
I guess that’s just for other people.
May 25th, 2009 at 11:55 amSocialist in the house!!!

“KABUL – A NATO service member has been killed in fighting in southern Afghanistan, the international force said Saturday. ”
They’re still there, alright.

May 25th, 2009 at 12:04 pmuncle fester makes some great points… all of which would serve to take the wind out of the american hater’s sails… you know, if we aren’t there, in their holy lands, they don’t need to hate us…
not?

May 25th, 2009 at 12:15 pmWhy did 9/11 happen? A lapse in security? A failed system to track foreigners entering and traveling about in our country? An inside job? No communication or workable relationships between the FBI, CIA and NSA? The failure of the Bush administration to act on known threats before 9/11?
Are we any safer today than yesterday? Has our security measures made us safer? Have the Patriot Acts I & II and other laws been proven to keep us safer? Has ILLEGAL surveillance kept us safer from attack?
We have been told many times that “we must fight them over there so we don’t have to fight them in our here.” Fight who over here? Are the Taliban or Al Qaida going to invade us?
We were told that “we must take the fight to them” and “we must be on the offensive not the defensive” so we invaded a country where the Taliban were based and another country that had absolutely nothing to do with 9/11. Then we drop our focus on what we were doing and put all of our focus on Iraq.
We didn’t need either war. We could have used surgical strikes at areas where we believed the terrorists existed, we did not need to declare all out war on sovereign nations.
How do you fight a war against those who have committed crimes against us? How do you fight a war against those who have no standing army or country that represents them?
We could have invested billions of dollars into our own country to keep us safe. Instead from 2003 to the present we have squandered billions upon billions of dollars on two unnecessary wars, wars that have made us more enemies and given our enemies more reasons to hate us.
In the process we have weakened our own military, our economy is in shambles and countries like Russia and China look on with smiles on their faces.
We can hope and pray that we will be able to stop every plot a terrorist makes to bomb or attack our country, but eventually one will happen again. But my guess is if we would have invested in REAL security in our own country from day one after 9/11 instead of beating the drums of war, the odds of another terrorist attack would have been greatly reduced, more so than invading two countries have.
May 25th, 2009 at 12:23 pmSorry for the long post…very outspoken today. Must be the caffeine?
May 25th, 2009 at 12:24 pmI completely agree with RealityChecks post #5.
What we’re hearing now is…..just words….just speeches……
May 25th, 2009 at 12:33 pmIf the truth appeared on the nightly news about what war does to the men and women who fight for us, we’d be a loath to go to war.
Americans should be forced to witness the rehab of the maimed, tears of the children, and callousness of the politicians that put soldiers in harms way.
We are all guilty of closing our eyes to the suffering caused by war… both sides.
Today the MSM should hang their heads in shame, for by failing to report the whole of the truth, they betray those who’ve paid so high a price.
May 25th, 2009 at 12:33 pmThank you, President Obama. You are right — we have failed our veterans. Certainly this is not something new, but I think it’s high time to remedy the situation.
Happy Memorial Day, Dad. Not all families were lucky enough to have their loved ones come home, but we were — for 22 years, you always came home. Our travels as a military family taught me so much about the world, and helped me to understand that no matter what we look like on the outside, or what language we speak, or what religion we practice (or not), we are all made of the same stuff.
Peace.
May 25th, 2009 at 12:37 pmI wouldn’t have thought Romartin16985 would have been an advocate of socialized medicine. The things you learn about others that you wouldn’t have first expected…
May 25th, 2009 at 12:52 pmHeadline On MSN on Memorial Day: North Korea Conducts Atomic Test
Is it just a coincidence that the North Koreans would conduct such a test on a day which we remember our fallen soldiers?
Or is Kim Jung Ill being used as a useful tool of fear? I sometime get the feeling that these little piss ant dictators like Ill and Ahmadinejad are just useful little puppets used by the Master puppets of the world to invoke fear into the hearts of the rest of us.
Now why would those who control the world want to invoke fear into us? It makes us submissive. It equates to big $$$$ for the war/defense industry.
I recall at a press conference, a Bush state department spokesman telling the press that we were selling a missile defense system to Poland so that they could defend themselves against future missile attacks from North Korea and Iran…North Korea and Iran!?! Not one person in the media questioned this absurdity. We are being played, played badly by the government and the media which serves well for the war/defense industry.
May 25th, 2009 at 1:00 pmi think he would have had a greater impact if he read the names of all the elected representatives who voted against the 21st century G.I. bill because it was “too generous” in the words of johnny mc cain at the end of his speech. oh, yeah, and included their political affliation
May 25th, 2009 at 1:02 pmAs a veteran I can say that the VA med care ain’t all bad.
May 25th, 2009 at 1:13 pmIt’s ain’t perfect. But it ain’t all that bad either. Nothing is perfect. The only VA benefits I used were my home loan in 92 and my VA med benefits in 2005. Insurance got to expensive for me. Cobra wanted 770.00 a month. Unless you make more than 70k a year, that’s just too much money. So I went and finally signed up for my med bens. I have to say, it’s very humbling when I go the clinic. I served in peacetime. But alot of those guys didn’t. And please, don’t thank me. To me, that bothers me.
Lets just think about those who have fought and died for this country. True, some of these conflicts were bs. None the less, these people went.
Nam and Iraq were a waste of our most precious resource . Our people.
And for that I will never forgive them. Both sides.
When will they ever learn?
mudshark, go to the “About” page on the Zoo. There’s an email address.
May 25th, 2009 at 1:20 pmThank some of you for honoring veterans today on this board. It was a pleasure defending your freedom. For the ones taking cheap shots in post above…I pray you never have to bear the burden of life long injuries.
May 25th, 2009 at 1:28 pmsee if that worked. Sent to admin.
May 25th, 2009 at 1:34 pmI don’t know if you defended my freedom, Reality Check, but I do thank you for your service. Now, what about this bitterness…?
May 25th, 2009 at 1:34 pmI see in some of the comments that there is an assumption that the US is fighting alone in Afghanistan.
This is not true.
Canada has had troops in Afghanistan for more than seven years, and have suffered @ 120 dead. On a per capita basis this equates to @ 1200 US dead. (US has 10x pop.)
Canadians have been trying to hold the line around Kandahar with far too few troops since the US decided to divert resources to the unnecessary invasion of Iraq.
We’ve been there all along. Glad to see that our allies are ready to come back to finish the job so that we can all go home.
Thank you to the servicemen/women of Nato for the sacrifices you make for the security of your fellow citizens.
May 25th, 2009 at 1:35 pmI wonder if RealityChecked can identify what he considers “cheap shots”?
Seems to me the comments directed at RC’s whine (which, along with Romartin’s comment ignored the point unbelievable made) were all pretty solid critiques of the disconnection between RC’s previously demonstrated opposition to anything even remotely “socialistic” and his current assailing of the President for a proposed move toward a more free market direction.
Does RC think sarcasm id a “cheap shot”? If so, then RealityChecked really needs to either grow a thicker skin or be less antagonistic on this forum.
May 25th, 2009 at 1:39 pm…and this is the same President who wanted to shift the burden of my V.A. care…to my private insurance company…so I can pay extra deductible payments…. for my care on my injuries while sustained on active duty!
You go ahead and drink the kool-aid…but he has already shown how much he really cares about us Vets.
Oh yes and Bushie cared so much about you. Idiot. Oh and wait why are you advocated socialized health care all of a sudden?!
I’m all for bringing the troops home but we can’t just yank them out of there and say to Afghanistan and Iraq “oh yeah we don’t want to do this anyone. Sorry for all the destruction!” Doesn’t work that way. We invaded and we owe it to them to fix this mess as much as we can. Obama is doing the best with what he has.
Happy Memorial Day all and ty to all the vets out there for your service (yes even you RC).
May 25th, 2009 at 1:42 pmGot it, mudshark. :)
May 25th, 2009 at 1:42 pmwhoops anymore not anyone :)
May 25th, 2009 at 1:43 pmGoing to war in Afghanistan or Iraq does not defend the constitution, if anything those wars have been used to whittle away at our freedom we must give up some of our rights so we can be safe.
Those who would give up Essential Liberty to purchase a little Temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety. -Ben Franklin
May 25th, 2009 at 1:44 pmHappy Memorial Day, kdgamergirl, I’m glad you’re here to read that.

I could not agree with you more. I am a Nam veteran and today remember an uncle and high school classmate who died in that war.
D2D
May 25th, 2009 at 2:06 pmDitto Uncle & Xith. No major theater conflict in Afghanistan where yet another celebrity general is made will be acceptable. My instinct is to push hard to wrap it up in both Iraq and Afghanistan (I’m mindful of logistical issues), but if we are to remain in Afghanistan, we need as many specifics as possible that won’t compromise ongoing operations. Mission-specific, goal-oriented, highly strategic operations, not our troops made to wander out and about patrolling themselves into roadside bombs. If war has a purpose, it will not linger on for a record time.
At any rate, this memorial day we are reminded of the obligations we must meet to our veterans, even if on the monetary side the figure runs in the trillions.
May 25th, 2009 at 2:12 pmLooks like someone’s got a crush on our Zooey…
Too bad he’s so shy that he has to express himself by pulling her hair.

RealityCheck, thank you for your service, but please realize that there were people on this board decrying that very move. We were against ANY privatization of the VA and we raised an outcry. We shall do so again if there is ANY attempt at the move whether from a Republican or a Democrat.
May 25th, 2009 at 3:02 pmGood grief dbadass,
No I’m not for government run health care. But those who need our help should get it, including vets. Including the disabled and chronically ill and those who work but are poor.
The 47 million or so of the medically uninsured include about 10 million people here illegally, and about 15 million or so who make over 50k and so could afford insurance but choose not to buy it. They are a huge drain on our system and it can’t be sustained forever.
Your broad stroke comment shows how uninformed you are.
May 25th, 2009 at 3:34 pmYour broad stroke comment shows how uninformed you are.
—
May 25th, 2009 at 3:44 pmNo they don’t and they are’t broad. In fact they are always targeted for a very specific purpose. So is it safe to assume that the government offers vets better care than the private sector would?
Romartin’s big “but” is showing.
May 25th, 2009 at 3:47 pmObama… you have fail to “CHANGE” the course. The two illegal wars are still going on.
May 25th, 2009 at 4:11 pmObama… you failed to stop the abuse of prisoners in Guantanamo as well as in other CIA and military prisons such as Bagram. War Crimes are still being committed under your watch, so, soon I’ll be calling you as ‘USA’s new WAR CRIMINAL’… after all, Pakistani civilians are still being massacre by US’s drones…
Obama… you failed to your own promises of accountability and transparency. You withheld the release of the abuse photographs that show that the USA has indeed a well established TORTURE PROGRAM.
Obama… you failed your promised of “CHANGE” by not changing at all… “president” Gates is still asking for an unrealistic, economic depleting, staggering military budget.
Obama… I understand you got into office with a mess in your hand, however, knowing that to every dollar the US’s government spends, the US’s is borrowing 50 cents…
Obama, you should read ‘Nemesis’ by Chalmers Johnson. Also you should read the book Hugo Chavez gave to you: ‘The open veins of Latin America’, by Eduardo Galeano.
Obama… stop supporting the criminals and terrorist state of Israel!
Today I’ll remember my uncle. He left for Viet Nam when I was four and I remember that sad day very clearly. I thought of him often, and every time I saw news coverage of Viet Nam. He was an entirely different person when he returned. I don’t think he ever had a day of peace the rest of his life.
Prayers of peace in the hearts of combat veterans.
May 25th, 2009 at 4:30 pmObama… you have fail to “CHANGE” the course. The two illegal wars are still going on.
Okay I’m going to try to be a respectful as possible here but as I mentioned before… he CANNOT just pull the troops out and stop the wars. We invaded with no regard for the destruction that would be caused and we have an obligation to ensure the safety of those we leave behind and to uphold the commitment to stamp out Al-Qaeda we just promised our allies.
Obama… you failed to your own promises of accountability and transparency. You withheld the release of the abuse photographs that show that the USA has indeed a well established TORTURE PROGRAM.
After speaking with different sides on this issue, he decided to withhold the photos for the safety of the troops. Now I realize I’m in the minority on this but I’m glad he did. He hasn’t withheld them from being used in court against people like Cheney etc. That’s the important thing.
Obama… you failed your promised of “CHANGE” by not changing at all… “president” Gates is still asking for an unrealistic, economic depleting, staggering military budget.
That I’m afraid is the cost of war. Yes it sucks but they’re for once trying to make sure the money is used more effeciently on things we actually need and could be useful to our troops.
Obama… I understand you got into office with a mess in your hand, however, knowing that to every dollar the US’s government spends, the US’s is borrowing 50 cents…
What else should he do? Freeze spending like the Republicans wanted? Blame Bush for this not Obama.
He’s been in office something like over 125 days or so. Give the man some time before you accuse him of breaking promises.
I’m glad to see him at cemetary today. I think he unlike Bush actually understands what’s going on and is acknowledging the hardships of our veterans. For myself, it’s the military’s fault my back is messed up but they won’t rehabilitate me. They just pay for my meds and nothing else. I have to pay for my own physical therapy and it sucks.
I’ll be at the cemetary in a bit myself in a little place called the Honor Garden honoring my friend who died over there and the many more who have also fallen.
May 25th, 2009 at 4:43 pmHey, Great O’Barry! It is your fellow liberals that are demeaning Veteran. I believe that Nastypolitan and the DHS depicted Veterans as terrorists, right?
May 25th, 2009 at 5:02 pmwiley,
Your uncle was not alone, a lot of people were different after returning from Viet Nam. Today, I trust our country (right or left) will remember those who died and those who have lived through the horrors of war.

Hey moron did you actually read the report or are you just making things up as you go along? Besides there are plenty of us liberals who are veterans so really it would be counterproductive of us to be calling ourselves terrorists.
Didn’t obama agree with reid that “the war was lost?”
Yes, obama, you’ve done a poor job supporting our veterans.
Which war? When exactly did he say that? Are you familiar with the definition of the word “was”? Still, I’m surprised you didn’t throw a much in there!
May 25th, 2009 at 5:30 pmObama: ‘We Have Failed’ To Give Vets The ‘Support They Need Or Pay Them The Respect They Deserve’
Yes we have Mr. President. So why do you not stop the military from booting out true military hero’s because they are Gay?
They deserve your respect but you turn your back on them when they ask for your help to continue to deploy and serve.
Gay or Straight, our military fights and defends the Constitution of the United States. They bleed for it and they even die for it.
Why then Mr. President do you not defend the Constitution also? You are letting US war criminals walk free but you want indefinite imprisonment with out charges or a day in court for those captured during a corrupt and criminal previous administration. An administration that lied us into war and killed the military you are now supposed to respect and defend. You have no faith in our judicial system or our prison system.
So, you are right Mr. President. Obama: ‘We Have Failed’ To Give Vets The ‘Support They Need Or Pay Them The Respect They Deserve’
That respect Sir, starts with you.
May 25th, 2009 at 5:34 pmNastypolitan and the DHS depicted Veterans as terrorists, right?
They still do. olbermann did the same thing and all 12 of his “fans” cheered for him. Classy, ay?
and the idiocy continues! I see you’ve replaced much with “ay”? Glad you’re starting to widen you’re vocabulary! I am however afraid to say your idea of wit (or lack thereof) has yet again failed miserably.
They did not depict veterans as terrorists. The explained a threat of possible disgruntled vets being targets for terrorist groups here in the US but you’d know that if you actually bothered to read.
May 25th, 2009 at 5:57 pmAnd wolf while I agree that DADT needs to be dealt with and removed preferably it isn’t so easy. There has to be quite a few things changed in addition to revoking the policy. We don’t have a Legislature in Chief and I personally wouldn’t want him revoking anything he pleases. I do hope right along with you that this does get the consideration it deserves.
He’s choosing not to interfere with Congressional investigations into war crimes and as much I wish the process would move along, this might take a while. I’m sure justice will be done. I’ve written to the DOJ, maybe you should too :)
May 25th, 2009 at 6:01 pmHi looktothehills…
May 25th, 2009 at 6:10 pmOlbermann:
My use of Mr. Bush’s phrase “cold-blooded killers” referred not to them [the troops], but rather those former and current members of Mr. Bush’s administration and Pentagon who so irresponsibly unleashed the hounds of war, and may indeed some day face war crimes trials.
Obfuscate much, OS? Loser.
May 25th, 2009 at 6:54 pmWell at least Obama could have taken a few Vets golfing this after noon with him…….as more troops die in Afghanistan….this guy could not give a care………..

You right-wingers TAKE EVERYTHING OUT OF CONTEXT! Nothing in there suggests that veterans are terrorists, but rather they are TARGETS of the right-wing EXTREMISTS for recruitment. There’s a WHOLE LOT OF DIFFERENCE.

You must just not know how to read because I can’t think of any reason why you would be stupid enough to post that after having read this article. He spent the day at the cemetary and addressing his concerns about the way vets are treated.
As a veteran, I think I can speak for most of us when I say that after having done that, he’s allowed to play golf. Unless of course you (who I’m betting money isn’t a vet) want him to spend every waking moment of his life attending to this problem and ignore everything else?

Romartin, please check my link at #82, and let’s see exactly what it was Bush was being criticized for. The fact that it was a golf drive is merely incidental. The fact that he casually segued from Iraqi war dead to his sports performance as if they were one and the same thing is not.

I believe it was also shown in Farenheight 9/11. But it was all over the place as well. I don’t recall exactly when Moore’s excellent documentary on the subject came out, but Bush’s “I don’t give a crap” statement was delivered to the public on Aug 4th 2002.
Obviously, Bush couldn’t have been discussing the situation in Iraq before 9/11.
Please!

…and this is the same President who wanted to shift the burden of my V.A. care…to my private insurance company…so I can pay extra deductible payments…. for my care on my injuries while sustained on active duty!
He did temporarily consider caving to the conservatives who wanted to privatize everything, then changed his mind before anything went through. Interestingly, you make it sound like you personally received a letter saying that your benefits were shifted, even though he never did that, and there’s no reason to think you would have fallen into that particular group.
So what’s your problem? That he isn’t liberal enough?
Obama has done plenty for vets so far, and he’s just getting started. V.A. funding and streamlining the red tape are two of the biggest things needed. He’s done those, after over eight years of complete inactivity. You can also give Dems credit for the new G.I. bill, which your precious Republicans voted against. In the future, I recommend you check with IAVA.org regarding the policy opinions and concerns of current veterans before coming here and complaining about your personal nonexistent hypothetical experiences.

And wolf while I agree that DADT needs to be dealt with and removed preferably it isn’t so easy.
May 26th, 2009 at 11:06 am______________________________________________________
Your point is well taken kdgamergirl. The President is not the supposed to fix DADT via signing statement or such frivolous thing. That serves no purpose in the long run. Specific to DADT, the President does have the bully pulpit and IMHO needed to make a bold public statement encouraging Congress to act and address these injustices. As to the Presidents handling of potential war crimes by BushCO, his actions of late, embracing Bush’s policy of secrecy and his call for indefinite imprisonment gives me pause to say the least. That said, I confess I’ve not written the DOJ but have become a sizable and frequent pain it the tookus to my state’s Senators and Congressional Rep on these issues. Your challenge is accepted. My keyboard is now aimed squarely at the DOJ’s in box :)
