…unless you trace back why it is they identify themselves that way, when people started to do so and what was going on that moved them to do so… then all of a sudden you’re doing a documentary on the history of racism in America. It’s a racist social construct. If you examine the construct, you uncover the racism. If you want to avoid having your documentary be about racism, then all you can do is skim the surface while intentionally ignoring the causes and context of it – which I maintain would be a racist endeavor.

Merely presenting the lives and experiences of ‘white people’ however you or they define themselves is not inherently racist and does not require and an in-depth examination of the history of racist overtones contained in the grouping is not a requirement to avoid a racist label.

And ethnicities, as you have so ably pointed out, are always about individual identification. It’s not irrelevant… we should explore how and why who we choose to identify with informs and shapes our experiences… saying that ‘German’ is an ‘acceptable’ ethnicity to describe oneself as while ‘white’ or ‘black’ is not seems to me a little overbearing…

People group themselves in all sorts of weird ways and not all of them are racists…

In general, I agree with you… ‘White’ as a concept is silly, over-used and under-understood. But then I feel the same way about most groupings that people use for shorthand… “Goth” or “American” for example… but I would consider both of those fine subjects for a documentary.

Not provided that it didn’t ignore the racism inherent in that definition. All of those “white” ethnicities were grouped together to define the privileged class. That is, they were grouped not on what they had in common (nothing more than with any other ethnic group), but rather in terms of what they weren’t, aka. “colored.” Any project which purports to claim that skin color constitutes a viable cultural commonality rather than a convenient identifier by which to stratify society – that is, which overlooked the role of racism in creating the cultural construct of “whiteness” – would itself be racist. Whereas one which focused on the racist philosophy behind the concept of “whiteness” would be instructive.

Hell if I know. It’s totally fluid when it comes to how an individual identifies with an ethnicity. I mean, everybody’s Irish on St. Patrick’s day and Mexican on Cinco De Mayo, right? And most of us American mutts are a genetic salad of all kinds of stuff.

But I was talking about breaking down ethnicities as appropriate subjects for a historical documentary, not individual identification. So that’s irrelevant anyways.
