Hatch: ‘I don’t agree’ with Gingrich that Sotomayor is a ‘racist.’

Earlier today, ThinkProgress noted how former House speaker Newt Gingrich (R-GA) attacked Judge Sonia Sotomayor on his Twitter feed today as a “Latina woman racist” who should withdraw her nomination. On CNN this afternoon, Wolf Blitzer asked Sen. Orrin Hatch (R-UT), who sits on the Judiciary Committee, if he agreed with Gingrich. “No, I don’t agree with that,” replied Hatch. Watch it:

ABC News’ Jake Tapper asked if the ousted speaker’s charge would “impact [his] former colleagues on Hill?” So far, it hasn’t affected Hatch, but as Media Matters has documented, much of the conservative movement has rushed to use out of context comments to tag Sotomayor as a “racist” and a “bigot.”

Forget Gingrich. JohnM is the decider of these sorts of things…

  2. DNFP says:

The Newt is no longer in office FOR A REASON

Tapper: ousted speaker’s charge would “impact [his] former colleagues on Hill?”

Yeah, Jake….pay attention. WHY ARE YOU IDIOTS IN THE MSM GIVING THIS “OUSTED” SPEAKER A FORUM?!!! He was driven from the Speaker’s post by ETHICS VIOLATIONS!!!! Get the picture? He’s ETHICALLY CHALLENGED! Now, quit throwing him up to us. He’s done.

  5. barfly says:

Well timed announcement, Obama. No one has mentioned torture, or Nancy Pelosi for a news cycle. Calls for an independent investigation? Phhhtt.

  6. Purple State / Lavender Boy says:

It’s time to quit branding Sotomayor as a “racist” or “liberal” or “activist”. It’s time to start looking at her WORK. Hatch has the right idea here, and I will have no qualms if he votes against her nomination as long as he gives a viable judicial reason for doing so.

  7. Wayne Ant Schneider says:

…former House speaker Newt Gingrich (R-GA) attacked Judge Sonia Sotomayor on his Twitter feed today as a “Latina woman racist” who should withdraw her nomination.

Maybe it’s Newt who should withdraw from the public spotlight. IMHO, he is pathologically insane. He is incapable of accepting the fact that liberals might have better ideas than his own.

  8. dbadass says:

Is Hatch under the bus or out from under the bus? I’m confused.

Have you looked under the Chrysler?

  9. dbadass says:

There’s plenty of room for Republicans who don’t agree on every issue.

Did Rush tell you to say that?

  10. ElBruce says:

Note that the people who actually still have jobs seem to feel a need to behave responsibly. The GOP is pretty much down there with the other “third parties” by now.

I wonder what Tom DeLay thinks? Quick, somebody get him on a teevee somewhere!

    .

    ConservativeForProgress Says:

Well how do you like that? The Republican party doesn’t have such a small tent afterall. There’s plenty of room for Republicans who don’t agree on every issue.

We’ll see – Rush hasn’t “responded” to Hatch yet, and he’s the final arbiter. Besides, it’s hardly a great victory when two Republicans disagreeing on one thing is a news story.

Are you sure about that? This is disagreement amongst the ranks. Who is to say that Gingrich demands a retraction? Who is to say that Rush demands Hatch become a Democrat?

But we don’t know how Hatch will vote. He will likely be pressured into voting no, much like the rest of the GOP.

  12. angels81 says:

CFP, if the repugs keep going the way they are going, you’ll be able to fit the whole party in a phone booth or one of those little clown cars.

  15. barfly says:

I think we do know how Hatch will vote. He’s just seen the power of the internet, with the blown “empathy” meme. Once Media Matters dug up the Bush Sr. empathy quote, they dropped it like a hot crack pipe. Hatch knows he’s said a lot of smack during his tenure, and it would be very embarassing for him with constituents to endorse this line of attack, and then have an inconvienient quote surface, exposing his hypocrisy.

  17. dasm says:

I’m so sick of hearing the Repubs’ whining, lies, stupid-stupid-stupid talking points, ridiculous dishonest comments with absolutely no facts or research to back them up. The Repubs invent criticisms, invent attacks, lie about quotes, spread their absurd talking points throughout the GOP base so quickly that we all recognize what lying, stupid, un-informed buffoons they are. But they still don’t get it. When everyone in your party spews the same lying s**t, um, duh…. we notice how stupid you are.

Her comment about female judges and judges of color having better judgement is in reference to DECIDING SEX AND RACE DISCRIMINATION CASES. She says, since 1972, the work of such judges, Ginsburg included, has enhanced judicial thought about sex and race discrimination. But she also says that white males IN DECIDING SEX AND RACIAL DISCRIMINATION CASES can produce well informed decisions…however those decisions are made better by the work of judges who understand the law AND come from a place of personal experience in these specific matters.

    Please read the context http://mediamatters.org/research/200905260050.

An excellent debunking point, concisely and cogently presented. Now the trolls will ignore it and repeat what they said before over and over again. I think their brains literally do not parse statements that are at odds with their beliefs.

    tallisse Says:

Yeah, but that would require that judges are both educated and experienced in the subject at hand -two things conservatives are allergic to.

Conservatives would much rather pick a candidate with “impeccable conservative credentials” over someone qualified.

We’re not saying Hatch likes sheep – if he does, that’s his own personal business, so long as he doesn’t shove his deviant lifestyle in our faces – we’re just saying that some people have said that he likes sheep.

Justice is blind and to ask justice to remove the veil, before being assigned to the court is, I think, not trying the case on its merits but on a justices pre-conceived notions.

Republicans are some twisted people. Their bizarre behavior of rushing to accuse their opponents of Republican sins they know they themselves will be called on is creepy.

  53. A Patriotic Anopheles Acting says:

    Merdad Spews:

Republicans aren’t twisted people, their leaders are just liars, criminals, obstructionists, regressive white men threatened by change (and one lone bumbling token). They rely on the underschooled, ignorance, and hatefullness of their voters by feeding them a steady diet of lies, strawmen, fear and propaganda. Their former leader, the incurious George W. Bush sat back and ignored the threat of terrorism along with every shred of intel that could have prevented 9/11, then abused the Nation’s trust and lied us into a war of choice, planned well in advance and aimed at enriching the wealth of his oil buddies and corporate war profiteers. He authorized torture while lying constantly about it to the American people and the world. He oversaw the worst economic collapse in generations while borrowing trillions of dollars from China to finance his war of aggression. He sat idly by while New orleans drowned, politicized every branch of Government by illegally hiring inept, unqualified “loyal Bushies”. He began an illegal wiretapping program well BEFORE 9/11 in order to illegaly spy on his political foes, the proof of the blackmailing now coming to light in the case of Harman with more surely to come. Seven years after 9/11 and our ports were still woefully underinspected, our food production and distribution poorly monitored, our imports of toys all but unmonitored, our forests and endangered animals safety pillaged, science and the envirement ignored all due to inept political appointments. Yeah, thank Gos for George W. Bush keeping us so safe YOU IGNORANT REPUBLICAN FCUKING FOOL!
