Reid acknowledges Guantanamo detainees will need to be relocated to U.S. prisons.

reidobama2After previously suggesting that he wouldn’t support Guantanamo detainees being relocated to the U.S., Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) acknowledged in an interview with a local news station that some Gitmo detainees will be put in federal prisons. While conservatives have baselessly claimed that “terrorists” could roam in Americans’ “backyards” if Guantanamo is closed, Reid defended the ability of the U.S. prison system to hold dangerous criminals:

REID: A maximum security prison in the United States, there has never been a single escape.

Q: You think eventually the plan is going to be to put them in maximum security prisons here in this country, correct?

REID: I think some. Keep in mind, Jon, there’s so many different issues. There’s no question that a number of these people who are there are not guilty of anything. The Uighurs, these are a group of Muslim Chinese who are guilty of nothing. They were arrested, put in there. They are there. They are doing nothing. We’re going to have to find someplace to put them. We can’t send them back to China. Should they go into a maximum security prison? Probably not.”

Needless to say, some Guantanamo detainees will need to be relocated to the United States in order to close the Guantanamo Bay detention camp. Reid is now trying to coax his colleagues into supporting Obama’s position, following the president’s speech last week. “The vast majority of the Senate – Democrats, certainly – agree that it should be closed,” Reid said. “And it’s going to be closed.”

I think putting the Gitmo detainees in conservative pundit’s back yards would be an excellent solution.

Can’t the Dems find someone better to serve as majority leader?

  4. Bilbo Hussein Baggins says:

This whole meme about how if we house detainees in the US, the “terrorists” will come here and try to break them out is ridiculous. How are they going to get into the US to break them out? If that was the case, they would have attempted a jail break at Guantanamo a long time ago because it would be much easier for a “terrorist” to get close to Guantanamo than close to a maximum security prison in the US.

The conservatives supported Bush rounding up detainees, therefore, they should bare the responsibility of providing prisons for those detainees who are found guilty. There shouldn’t be any objection! Reid needs to MAN-UP.

On a brighter note, once Gitmo is empty, we’ll have room in it for Rove, Cheney & the rest of the ‘gang that couldn’t tell the truth’.

    Where do you think Zacharias

  22. whirlaway says:

This is what we should do.

    1. House the guilty folks in maximum security prisons.

    2. Ensure that “red” states and “red” Congressional
districts get adequate supply of toilet paper and
    diapers.

    Easy!

  23. raynman says:

Gee, when Timothy McVeigh was in prison, I didn’t see him roaming through America’s backyards while he was there.

  24. SlappyBastinado says:

Has anyone ask the detainees where they would prefer to be housed? I think they should visit and tour a Super Max prison in the US then take a vote, publish the results (using standard Acorn ballots, counted by standard Acorn employees) and make all available to the world so it could be said, that by the Democratic process, the captured guests have picked where they want to live and we will be seen in a much better light around the globe. Mission accomplished! We should include foreign prisons also. My guess is they would say thanks but no thanks we prefer to be right here in Gitmo, and could you move a little to the left please, your blocking my sun…….dude!

  25. Megaloptera McWars says:

This is a bad cartoon … a major political party contending that the Justice Department, a department under their oversight, policy-setting and budgeting wing, will release terrorists into people’s backyards. With that in mind, perhaps Republicans no longer deserve to be a major political party.

  26. StratRat says:

This issue is the one which very clearly encapsulates the GOP and it’s problems: They are scared of everything. I mean just frightened of everything. Maybe if most of them weren’t home-schooled, they could understand the world is a complicated place. To their thinking, anyone who looks different and doesn’t wrap their entire being around the Bible, then they must be scary people. Quick hint to our frightened trolls: There are many billions of Muslims on the planet. Billions of Muslims. Are they all scary too?

Bush set the world on fire, and we are trying to make it right.

  28. P.D. says:

Hasn’t this argument been played out already? I’ts absolutely ridiculous the GOPers hysteria over this. Super Prisons would have no problem handling these guys. What a bunch of wimps! Like Jon Stewart said, I would rather be in a cell next to a Gitmo inmate, than the brain eater.

  29. Megaloptera McWars says:

Your treatment of everything as a joke, Slappy, is the reason Americans voted to remove your reflection from Washington.

  30. StratRat says:

You’d think even the GOP trolls would get tired of being frightened all the time. How can they function in that state? The chance of winning the lottery every time you play is higher than you being hurt by a ‘terrorist’. Are they scared of the lottery too? I mean come on.

  31. Hoodathunktick says:

Slappy, if you truly believe the detainees were housed in Gitmo to keep America safe, that we have housed all of these dangerous criminals in places outside of the US was in the name of public safety, I have a nice bridge in NY to sell you. Cheap.

  32. StratRat says:

If the GOP just had a little confidence and trust in our law enforcement professionals, they would sleep better at night.

REID: Can’t put them in prison unless you release them.

QUESTION: Sir, are you going to clarify that a little bit? …

REID: I can’t make it any more clear than the statement I have given to you. We will never allow terrorists to be released in the United States.

I have trust in our law enforcement officials, just not in Harry Reid and his friends in Congress to make decisions based on anything other than political expediency. Evidence Reid’s sagging poll numbers, flip flop to Obama’s side, and Obama’s trip to Las Vegas.

BTW, some of those detainees who yes have been deemed releasable, have not yet been due to concerns of persecution when they do return to their country of origin.

  40. ElBruce says:

I have never heard in my life that anybody outside of the Executive branch gets to say which federal detainees are housed in which federal detention facilities. If you don’t want a SuperMax in your state, then fine, don’t have one. If you accept the facility (and the money and jobs that go with it) then you can assume that bad people are going to be put in it. You don’t get to choose which bad people, though.

All of these state reps crying about it can just have their penitentiaries taken away from them.

    .

    obamawipe$ Says:

I don’t give a rodent’s rectum what they want. They’re the ones who put back yards on the table. Obama was just talking about federal SuperMax facilities, and they were all like “back yards!” So that’s what they can have.

The number of ’stated’ adherants are always lower than those who have not been asked or have declined to state their religous preference. The bottom line is that the Christian faith is declining in numbers while the Islamic faith is increasing in numbers. We must either get along, or be at war for the forseeable future.

Bullsh!t. You don’t think people read your words? You and your GOP crybabies are scared of all who don’t think and act like you. You cannot understand that the world is not what you want it to be. It is very complicated and it would have been best for you to avoid the lousy home-schooling and got out a little more often.

If you can figure out stuff – which is still under debate – you will realize that the chance of you or anyone you know getting hurt by a ‘terrorist’ is lower than almost any other probablility. Bush let us get hurt on 9/11, so we don’t count that as Bush knew what was going to happen and let it happen. Bush also let the anthrax attacks go without any valid invesitgation or prosecution, so we don’t count that one either – but still Bush is a hero to you. Go figure.

It’s ok with me if you are scared of boogey men. I am hopeful your own children don’t see you crawled up in a ball, wimpering like a little girl. I am worried you might be helping the next generation of GOPr’s learn how to be as scared as you appear to be. They deserve your strength, not your tears.

No one is afraid of ALL Muslims, Rant and Rat (frick and frat), that seems to be your unaddressed fear.

You know, if I knew I was going to die and I had my choice between being beheaded or tortured to death, I would take being beheaded any day.

Do you have any idea how many detainees we have tortured to death? Dead is dead. So we torture them to death rather than beheading them. Does that make us better than they are?

  56. Bilbo Hussein Baggins says:

    For Romartin:

Since August 2002, nearly 100 detainees have died while in the hands of U.S. officials in the global “war on terror.” According to the U.S. military’s own classifications, 34 of these cases are suspected or confirmed homicides; Human Rights First has identified another 11 in which the facts suggest death as a result of physical abuse or harsh conditions of detention. In close to half the deaths Human Rights First surveyed, the cause of death remains officially undetermined or unannounced. Overall, eight people in U.S. custody were tortured to death.

    http://www.humanrightsfirst.org/us_law/etn/dic/exec-sum.asp

So Romartin, how many Americans have been beheaded by the “terrorists”. I’m betting it’s way less than the number we have murdered.

  57. Bilbo Hussein Baggins says:

    obamawipe$ Says:
Why have you guys let Cheney and Bush terrorize you into believing that you are in constant danger?
Checked the threat level, lately? Seems obama disagrees with you.

Would you care to link to any article saying that Obama has called a “threat level” orange…red…whatever?

Or even any article where Obama has said we are under immediate threat of attack?

What…you can’t? Well then, there you go idiot.

  58. StratRat says:

Romartin is exactly what is wrong – and has been wrong – in this country the last 8+ years. The GOP turned an entire political party into a large group of WATB. They don’t even pretend anymore to be strong and brave – they openly admit they are scared of a statistical improbablility. They drive their cars – not knowing they are more likely to get injured in a crash that becoming a ‘terror’ victim. They use their microwaves, not knowing that hundreds die a year from its use. They clean their rain gutters, not knowing that hundreds a year are killed or injured falling off a ladder.

But still they climb under their beds and wet themselves whenever they are told to by the mighty GOP fright machine. Stay classy Romartin – you strong and brave wimp.
