Days After Steele’s Racist Attack On Obama, C-SPAN Airs Video Of Steele Denouncing Racism
Yesterday, C-SPAN aired its “Students & Leaders” series featuring RNC Chairman Michael Steele speaking to students at Woodson Senior High School in Washington, DC on May 12. While fielding questions – including who inspired him and how he deals with pressure – Steele’s answers seemed to be at odds with statements he has given while in other settings.
Steele, in no uncertain terms, denounced racism and those who use race to “stereotype” others:
STEELE: Does that mean your neighborhood is going to stop being red lined? No. Does that mean tomorrow when you go into the bank to get a loan they going to give it you? No. When you put that employment form in front of somebody they going to give it to you, give you that job? No. You’re still going to have to work but understand that sometimes when you work hard, there are still some folks who hang on to some old, dying, rather rotting ways that have less to do with your empowerment and more to do with your subjugation, more to do with your stereotype. [...] Remember, from where you began to where you are is a big deal, coming out of this city, coming out of your community, being black. It’s a big deal.

Taken alone, Steele’s comments about racism in American society are a powerful reminder that political leaders of both parties acknowledge that the problem of racial discrimination still exists. But last week, Steele employed the same “rotten” racist stereotypes to attack President Obama. ThinkProgress reported that Steele suggested that Obama won the presidency because of his race. “He was not vetted, because the press fell in love with the black man running for the office,” Steele said.
The weekend following Steele’s racist smear against Obama, Mike Huckabee praised Steele for being “effective in challenging” Obama because “no one is gonna be able to use the racism charge.”

This ties right into the ideas that Pat Buchanan were pushing before about his complaints regarding “affirmative action” with the Sotomayor case. Mr. Steele may be emphasizing the idea about those “who hang on to some old, dying, rather rotting ways that have less to do with [...] empowerment and more to do with [...] subjugation, more to do with [...] stereotype”, but his own party is characterized by those who are emphasizing subjugation and stereotyping.
Which is it, Mr. Steele? Are we to believe a GOP that wants to encourage the rise of the minority, only for their old ways to keep them down? If you want to emphasize and empower the black community, why are you shooting down a black man who became President? What message does that give the black community?

Since it hasn’t been spelled out for the slow people, let’s parse down Steele’s statement to explain exactly why it’s racist:
“He was not vetted, because the press fell in love with the black man running for the office,” Steele said.
First of all, Obama has gone through an extremely exhaustive “vetting” process. There’s pretty much nothing about his private or public life that we don’t all know by now. Secondly, his qualifications are excellent for the Presidency, as good as any sitting President in recent memory.
To claim that “he won because he’s black” is to presume that a black guy couldn’t have won the Presidency honestly – that his being black must provide some unfair advantage, because he could not possibly have earned it fairly. Which is simply another way of saying that black people can’t be qualified to be President.
Being black was no advantage for Obama, even with the press. Reverend Wright was one example. “Militant Michelle” was another. Terrorist fist jab. Or merely the fact that Obama is not allowed to express anger, something that any other (white/male) politician gets to do, and which is often an effective rhetorical device. Were Obama to have gotten angry during his campaign – at anyone, about anything – the entire media (not just FAUX) would have exploded with the same old “angry black man” campaign that has been used to destroy the credibility of many, many black men in the past. Simply put, it was much harder for Obama to win than it would have been were he white.
Of all people, Steele should know how much harder a racial minority has to work to merely do as well as white guys, much less to beat them. Which makes this sort of thing even worse coming from him.

Reporting this story was a good thing, yes, because I am one that believes the flag should not be desecrated. Putting it on the floor and not folding it properly–yes, I find that to be a crude act as I feel the flag is to be treated with respect.
However, what gave her the authority to hang that flag inside? Do you know if it was in the way? I wouldn’t be surprised if I was asked to remove a flag if I hung it up without the authority to do so. As much as I respect the flag and feel the person who removed the flag did the wrong thing by leaving it unfolded, I do think that the issue should have been settled fairly without having to report this to a news station.
It was ridiculous to bring it up here when it had little to do with the main issue, but you MADE it an issue. Fine. Perhaps there was a link to the person with “links to Africa” and Steele’s talk about racism, even though not all people from Africa are black. But then you have the gall to call us anti-American and project that someone hates veterans? Where the hell do you get off judging ALL of us when you don’t even KNOW all of us?
You know, I usually refrain from losing my cool here, but when I see people calling us out for being anti-American just because we don’t agree with other people’s wishes and demands…that’s just not cool, man.
I would ask for an apology to Xisithrus for assuming he hates veterans, but I know we won’t get it from him. So I will do it for you. Xisithrus, on behalf of 0$, even though I don’t know the guy, I apologize for what he said. FICO and other scoring systems have been designed purposely to avoid claims of racism. They do not look at ethnicity and they have been in use for at least 20 years, if not more.

The case was completely opposite.
Banks relied on borrowers and expectations of ever expanding R.E. prices, you moron.

The liabilities were limited, but the LOSSES were not.

No one has ever passed a law requiring lenders to give mortgages without checking those criteria. The CRA does not do that – all minority borrowers must meet the same income/credit history guidelines as anybody else. The only thing lenders were required to do was stop discriminating against them. Naturally, any requirement not to discriminate against minorities is automatically targeted by Republicans.

As everybody knows, President Bush had far more Black people in powerful positions and in his cabinet than President Clinton. Clarence Thomas was hammered by the democrats. The fact that he was a conservative trumped the fact that he is a black man. The press certainly didn’t fawn over his “compelling personal story”. President Bush nominated Hispanic Miguel Estrada to federal appeals court, and it was assumed that he was on track for the SCOTUS. The Democrats aggressively blocked the nomination, thus denying him the position. Maybe the Democrats were afraid of losing some of the Hispanic vote if they allowed Estrada’s career to advance? Of course I could go on and on, but I shouldn’t have to. The racist label is a red herring that is an effective hot button tool for the “group think” liberals.
