Clueless O’Reilly Launches Uninformed Attack On Bloggers, Including ThinkProgress

Last night on The O’Reilly Factor, Bill O’Reilly engaged in one of his usual diatribes against bloggers. In attempting to demonstrate that the blogosphere is full of extreme hate-mongers, O’Reilly criticized both conservative and liberal blogs for allowing commenters to freely post opinions with which the sites may not agree.

In his “policing the net” segment, O’Reilly displayed a few hateful comments against Judge Sonia Sotomayor that were posted on Michelle Malkin’s Hot Air blog. Then O’Reilly set his sights on ThinkProgress (aka “the insects”):

ThinkProgress, another crazy website on the left: “It will be so funny seeing a bunch of old white guys questioning her during the Senate hearings.” Nothing racist about that. You know, these people — as I said on the conservative guy — they don’t think that they’re racist. They don’t think that they’re bigoted. But you know, it’s so obvious they are.

In both cases, O’Reilly was not quoting posts on ThinkProgress or Hot Air. Rather, he was referencing a couple of the many commenters that post to each site. Watch it:

You have to forgive O’Reilly because he doesn’t actually “go on the Internet” to figure out what he’s talking about. Conservatives are rightfully criticizing O’Reilly for unfairly attacking Hot Air. Allahpundit writes, “Ah, there’s nothing like yanking a comment out of context and using it to smear the entire site.”

The comments policy of this blog — like most blogs on the Internet — is to allow postings from people with whom we agree and disagree. ThinkProgress values and appreciates an open commenting section that allows for a candid and frank exchange of views. Those comments do not always reflect the positions and views of the site’s editors and authors. As long as commenters abide by our terms of use, they are free to post whatever they’d like, even things which offend Bill O’Reilly’s sensitivities.

It’s worth recalling, of course, that O’Reilly’s own website has allowed commenters to post hateful things in the past. But thankfully, O’Reilly is around to help police us all.

Update This morning on Fox and Friends, Malkin criticized O'Reilly, saying that he unfairly "smeared" bloggers last night:

MALKIN: I think there is this attitude about the blogosphere that, "Oh, they don't know what they're talking about." There's denigration -- Hot Air was smeared, unfortunately, by the O'Reilly Factor last night -- when a lot of people get good information, information they cannot get anywhere else.

Watch it:

Right-of-center blogger Jon Henke calls O’Reilly a “dumbass.”
Update Right Wing News writes that if O’Reilly cares about accuracy, “he definitely should do a retraction and he needs to make sure that the people compiling this info for him in the future know the difference between a comment and a blog post.”

  17. fletc3her says:

This is tantamount to criticizing the New York Times for printing critical letters on its editorial page. There is a general understanding that newspapers carry a range of different types of pieces including hard news, opinion, editorials, satire, letters, etc. A good newspaper makes it clear what you’re reading at any given moment.

However, these comments are something else altogether. They aren’t even really akin to anything that would be found in a newspaper. They are more like the conversation that takes place at a coffee shop while reading the newspaper. There is nothing more fundamentally American than discussing politics.

  20. Chuck Feney says:

Malkin is such a laugh-riot saying, “Hot Air was smeared, unfortunately, by the O’Reilly Factor last night…”

So, it is OK to smear TP, just not her brand of crazy?

And, Bill-o, I apologize in advance for the hate, but you are, to quote Whoopi Goldberg (to Glenn Beck) “a lying sack of dog mess.”

  21. fletc3her says:

I make an effort to call out bigotry and hatred when I see it. You don’t support gay marriage, fine, but I’m going to let you know that I think you’re a hateful, bigoted person. This, in the view of the right wing, makes me a terrible person. How dare I express my opinion and possibly hurt their feelings?

What strikes me about the right with regard to Sonia Sotomayor is their complete lack of decorum. They are lobbying accusations of bigotry and racism with more vigor than I do. And they are doing it on television, on the editorial pages, and in their opinion columns. I find it amazing that the right’s level of discourse has basically devolved to the equivalent of a message board.

The Republican party is crumbling from a party of (bad) ideas into a squabble of hateful ideologues who have no power, but still have the remnants of their soap box.

Interesting point… they used to have some discipline over what levels of the wingnutosphere got to say what. So if you’re a blogger you can make up all kinds of crazy stuff, Drudge needs at least one citation, pundits like Bill’O need some facts, and the “news desk” at FAUX needs to pretend they’re hosting a debate between two sides. At the top of the chain, Republican politicans make the same points, but only using innuendo and code-speak. That’s how it’s supposed to work in order to be effective. But they’ve completely gone off the rails lately, such that their politicians are saying things that would make a political blogger blush, Bill’O can’t tell TP from HotAir, and the arbiter of last resort for all these disputes ends up being Rush.

  57. misscoleopteramolly says:

My first knee-jerk reaction is to agree with Jon Henke — that Bill O’Reilly is a “dumbass”. But O’Reilly — like Limbaugh, Beck, Hannity, Savage, Coulter, and so many others — exists to feed red meat to his rabid audience, upon which his livelihood depends. I don’t think O’Reilly is dumb — I’m sure most of his moves are well thought out to provoke enough outrage to keep his ratings up. But I do give O’Reilly points for attacking a conservative blog as well as ThinkProgress.

    A couple of observations here.

    1. The “racist” label is being flung way too much here. It’s gotten to the point where nobody can give legitimate praise or criticism to anybody other than a straight white male without getting branded a racist. There’s a lot of criticism of Sotomayor coming from the right, but I suspect this has more to do with her ideology than her ethnic background. If she was unabashedly anti-abortion, anti-gay, and pro-school prayer, she would be embraced by the right no matter what her ancestry was. Likewise, President Obama got a lot of votes because he was the best candidate in the running for the job, not because he was a black guy liberals could vote for to assuage their guilt. Yes, there are some real racists out there. But more often there are other factors influencing people’s positions.

    2. People confuse “hate” with feelings of anger and frustration. Blogsites such as ThinkProgress (and presumably Michelle Malkin’s Hot Air) are great outlets for ordinary Americans to vent, and a way to see what’s on their minds. Yet I see the “hate” label a lot, often from the trolls who lurk around here. Sometimes the “hate” label is justified — such as when a thread degenerates into nothing but childish name-calling (which I deplore) — but it’s not “hate” when registering legitimate outrage at Republican obstructionism, smear campaigns, politicians’ lies, or Palinist stupidity.

    3. Blogsites are ultimately responsible for their content, including comments made by posters. Posts that are blatantly offensive or abusive should be removed (especially if they are hateful for the sake of being hateful and contribute nothing to the discourse). This does NOT mean the blogsite necessarily ENDORSES all posts allowed to stand — there should be room for a poster to disagree with the original point of the thread. Holding Michelle Malkin or ThinkProgress accountable for everything their posters say is ludicrous.

There are people from both sides of the aisle who taunt the other side, I won’t argue with that. However, I tend to find most of the discussions here civil until someone comes to inject venom into the conversation. That’s when you’ll end up getting the hounds unleashed, and that seems to happen with any politically-aligned website/forum nowadays.

  97. ralph the wonder locust says:

Poor Michelle Malkin. She got caught up in O’Reilly’s desperate attempt to portray himself as “independent”.

See, O’Reilly can’t criticize TP or the “far-left loons” exclusively for too long before even his base will recognize that he’s a wingnut. And there are few things he values more than his façade of “independence”. He thinks it gives him some credibility (I think he’s wrong about that.)

But as a consequence, every once in a while, he’s got to make an effort to appear “even-handed” in his criticisms. Not very often, mind you, just often enough that he can claim that he”goes after both sides”.

So in order to get at the desert of smearing TP, he’s got to eat his vegetables and also smear Hot Air. Too bad for Michelle.

    _____________

I didn’t. I posted a link to a site that specializes in statistical analysis, which showed that campaign donors who list their profession as auto dealer or car dealer are far more likely to have donated to Republican candidates than Democratic candidates.

Since there are a disproportionate number of Republican auto dealers to begin with, it stands to reason that a disproportionate number of Republican-owned auto dealerships will be closed when Chrysler decides to downsize. That’s not a conspiracy, just basic mathematics.

Now, if you have any evidence of (a) a closure rate of Republican-owned dealerships that is significantly higher than can be explained by pure sampling error, and (b) evidence that these closures were motivated by political rather than economic factors, and (c) evidence of direct involvement by President Obama or other White House officials in the closure decisions, please post it.

If you are unable to provide evidence of all three points I mentioned, your meme is debunked and you must stop spreading it.

  103. WAYNEBRO says:

The comments policy of this blog — like most blogs on the Internet — is to allow postings from people with whom we agree and disagree.

Which is how it should be if people want free and open debate reflecting the freedom of speech which is one of the differentiating factors of our country from countries like China where open debate is discouraged.

It hurts no one to hear (or in this case read) an opposing viewpoint, except for perhaps Mr Oreilly, who blows a head gasket whenever he has to hear something he disagrees with (”cut his mic, cut his mic!).

In America you don’t have to like the idea someone is talking about.

But you ought to like the idea that they have the freedom to talk about it.

  104. Xisithrus says:

The company [Chrysler], in a motion filed with the U.S. Bankruptcy Court in New York, said it wants to eliminate 789 dealerships by June 9. Many of the dealers’ sales are too low, the automaker said. Just over 50 percent of dealers account for about 90 percent of the company’s U.S. sales, the motion said.

Chrysler wants to keep its ‘alpha’ dealerships, which sell all their lines.

X, it’s useful to recall a bit of wisdom from Upton Sinclair:
