Citing a handful of right-wing bloggers yesterday afternoon, the Washington Examiner reported ominously, “Evidence appears to be mounting that the Obama administration has systematically targeted Chrysler dealers who contributed to Republicans” for closure. Not to be outdone, Fox and Friends hosted conservative blogger Michelle Malkin this morning to play up the conspiracy theory. “Believe me Steve, over the last several years, we’ve all documented the Obama-Chicago-gangland tactics that certainly make this a possibility,” Malkin said.
Malkin’s speculative hysterics were apparently enough to pique the interest of Fox News White House correspondent Major Garrett. As he’s done with other right-wing conspiracy theories, he asked the White House for its response to the charges:
GARRETT: There is some concern in the blogosphere that of the of the Chrysler dealerships being closed, a disproportionate number appear to be in which the operators contributed to Republicans. And hardly which contributed to democrats have been closed down. I’m not saying the White House knows anything about this but would you be concerned about any taint of politics in any of the decisions.
Watch it:
As Press Secretary Robert Gibbs explained to Garrett, it is Chrysler — not the federal government — that is in charge of selecting which dealerships will be closed. Further, as Nate Silver explained in a post that was published just hours after the Examiner’s initial report yesterday, “There is just one problem with this theory. Nobody has bothered to look up data for the control group: the list of dealerships which aren’t being closed.”
Silver explained, “It turns out that all car dealers are, in fact, overwhelmingly more likely to donate to Republicans than to Democrats — not just those who are having their doors closed.” In all, Silver found that “88 percent of the contributions from car dealers went to Republican candidates and just 12 percent to Democratic candidates,” while, the list of Chrysler dealerships being closed “gave 92 percent of their money to Republicans — not really a significant difference.”
The problem here is as usual.

Additional reports indicate that Chrysler dealership customers are going blind from staring at the sun instead of watchng FAUX Snooze. One anonymous customer was reported to say “I would rather stare at the sun than watch FAUX Snooze”. Torture advocates have been heard to say “Pish, Posh. GM, or its financing arm GMAC, is present in around 65 percent of synthetic collateralised debt obligations (CDOs), according to Standard & Poor’s, and underlies an estimated $1 trillion of default swaps.
For bond investors, a GM bankruptcy would be hard, but a GMAC bankruptcy would be disastrous. GMAC is home to three quarters of the group’s bonds, and is found in a large proportion of outstanding synthetic CDOs.
Standard & Poor’s analyst Andrew South. “A rating action on GM could have a widespread effect on many CDOs.”

Mirror boy, grab a mirror:
The agreement, revealed in a Securities and Exchange Commission filing by GM (GM, Fortune 500) early Thursday, would essentially give the bondholders 10% of the company but also give them the rights to buy an additional 15% of the company’s stock at a low price.
The deal is unlikely to allow GM to avoid bankruptcy, however. If anything, it might clear potential obstacles to the government’s plans to use bankruptcy as a way to turn around the nation’s largest automaker. That’s because bondholders accepting the new offer agreed not to fight the government’s plans for a quick bankruptcy at GM.
You’re belly-aching over vapor, nada, vacuity.

The best guess, as of Today, is that GM will file chapter 11 on the first of the month and, in that case, the “poor bondholders” will be protected. That’s why they rejected the buy-out. They’ll get a bit more but they were the final straw that forced the bankruptcy.

May 28th, 2009 at 7:36 pmBTW. “Paying off bondholders first” is part of the problem. We’ve spent four decades rigging the system for siphoning cash off the top. Our largest industry is capital. And I guess I find it hard to sympathize with someone who has lived the high life by letting an effing car company play with their legacy. Especially when those car companies have been dying through mismanagement for three decades.

They sold the concept of “get in on it” to anybody foolish enough to throw their money away. And they got rich, while the average Joe (or Timmeh) got screwed.
The rich can right their ships cause they have deep reserves of cash (usually, or friends willing to lend).
The rest of us can b*tch and moan all we want, but if you lost money in the market, IT’S YOUR FAULT.

This should come as no surprise, but I disagree with you completely, Tim. But I can have fun taking us back eight years to May 2001. Now we can say (of GW Bush):
1. The President is paying back the corporations for their support in the last election.
2. The President is engaged in privatizing U.S. government.
3. The President and his cadre of capitalists have an agenda and it isn’t friendly to the average worker.

May 28th, 2009 at 8:09 pmYou can’t be serious! You have no clue how a car dealership works, do you troll? Here’s the deal:
Unmoved inventory costs the dealership and the car company. Especially since most cars are now covered by company financing so the parent company takes a double hit when loans aren’t being written. And that doesn’t even start to cover the service end of the business.
May 28th, 2009 at 8:10 pmREMINDER: GM failed under George Bush. Georgie told us that he inherited a recession from Clinton and I’ve not heard one right winger in over 8 years tell me what steps George Bush took to get our nation out of that recession.

Exactly , pete
I covered the service end in post #239 ; I just didn’t feel it necessary to expound further , because it’s obvious this Tim Vacusuck is simply talking out his ass and knows absolutely nothing about the auto industry ……….
May 28th, 2009 at 8:14 pmUPDATE: all bailout money is ACTUALLY A LOAN that has to be paid back with interest.
May 28th, 2009 at 8:16 pmAbout those bond holders:

May 28th, 2009 at 8:18 pmI know what you mean, MCMetal. It’s not worth the effort to really try and educate our little pets.
May 28th, 2009 at 8:21 pmpete , I simply cannot believe anyone would post such blatant lies ; but to do so about the auto industry , which I was personally a part of for 2 DECADES and believe you’re going to get away with writing fatuous twaddle , is truly amazing and sad………..
May 28th, 2009 at 8:27 pmTrolls, please know that I criticize this Auto Recovery task force, not because I believe the panel is some kind of lightning bolt on companies’ political freedoms, but because the board ITSELF is chock full of private wall-street interests.
We don’t have a new set of financial regulations governing the financial sector, but we DO have rapid deadlines pushed on the auto industries taking it hard. (Of course, I recognize that deadlines are better than being left to file bankruptcy raw months ago w/o government assistance and free PR that informed prospective buyers and warranty holders that these companies would not simply disappear in a bankruptcy filing.)
If GM and Chrysler had their cars manufactured by robots, I’d say let them fail, but we have WORKER’S pensions & health care at stake and they need a fair shake. Their welfare isn’t considered enough. They were handed down the crappy strategy from the top.
Chrysler made these decisions. I wish they had not, since a platform for the company’s recovery depends on these dealerships picking up, even if their sales figures are depressing right now. I feel especially bad for Ohio.
If bankruptcy was inevitable for Chrysler & GM, the government helped ease fears in the public about the bankruptcy process.

I remember hearing them through most of those eight years talking about how great the economy was doing. Even though it never got much above sluggish growth out of the first of the two recessions that hit during the Bush years.

republicans hate facts Says:
You CONS really are the sh*tters when it comes to UNDERSTANDING *MONEY* and *PROFITABILITY*. No wonder you BANKRUPT *EVERYTHING* you seem to TOUCH!
Republicans are almost as good at business as they are at math, science, history, economics, or the law.
May 28th, 2009 at 8:53 pmKeith Olbermann just talked about the Rethuglican hypocrites who voted to let the auto industry fail!
May 28th, 2009 at 8:58 pmThanks for the link, but it is what I said at the beginning of this debate, CDOs CDS
May 28th, 2009 at 9:11 pmAs for Chrysler closing one ranked 125th.
Location Location Location [IE local competition from like dealers]
May 28th, 2009 at 9:16 pmHe never does.
May 28th, 2009 at 9:18 pmWingnuts, Hannity,Billdo, limpdick, beck the cry baby and all the rest of the nuts that dont give a rats ass about our country. Do you think we should stoop to their level, line the traitors up against a wall and use AK-47`s TO END THE LIES THAT THEY SPEW? No of course not libs dont believe in guns and violence. We can bury your asses with facts.
May 28th, 2009 at 9:55 pmRemember correlation does not equal causation. The descriptions I’ve read indicate that more rural dealers are being closed than city dealers. The Republicans tend to be more popular in rural areas.
Are they proposing affirmative action for Republican owned businesses now?
May 28th, 2009 at 10:06 pmIt’s interesting that 3 of the dealerships that are closing near our business in the Chicagoland area hire UNION LABOR, journeyman mechanics and semi-skilled helpers (oil changers), car hikers, parts counter workers, and body shop guys are all UNION LABOR. And there’s a lot more of them voting than there are owners.
They are closing dealerships that don’t have a high amount of NEW CAR SALES. If they sell used cars it doesn’t help the manufacturer.
May 28th, 2009 at 10:40 pmThis is Clinton’s bl#wjob all over. Because the Repubs can’t make government work they’re going to make sure the create as many distractions as possible for the Democrats. And what happens when this doesn’t work. I’m afraid they’ll try to get rid of him like they did JFK and Bobby Kennedy. They need to be stopped.
May 28th, 2009 at 10:49 pmShayne,
Republicans liked it when the government they ran did not enforce laws against corporations. In their warped view, fines and judgments are a drain on corporate profits, and anything that hurts profits is bad (to them). They talk about being “law and order” candidates, but that only applies to social laws against regular people, not laws that corporations must obey. I deny anyone to name a recent Republican president (i.e. after Eisenhower) who didn’t do what he could to tear down corporate regulations (sometimes through inept enforcement, such as with Bernie Madoff.)
May 28th, 2009 at 10:58 pmWayne, I think they’ve all lost their minds. They contradict themselves every five minutes.
May 28th, 2009 at 11:23 pmOMG!!! Obama is trying to move the whole planet Earth out to Pluto?”
Sounds like something Michelle Malkin would say and Fixed News would report and the (cons)ervatives would listen and believe. Just crazy I tell ya!!!
Why is that every time the Republicans get in office “lawlessness” prevails and things run amok and when they leave a pile of garbage and blame everybody else? These Republicans never have anyones interest at heart?
The Republicans are the “death” of America!!

Yes. That’s exactly what they’re doing at this point.
May 29th, 2009 at 1:09 amThere has been a lot of responses to this story but the record needs to be set straight about this very personal topic. I grew up in the auto industry in the Midwest. This story was generated by Lars Larson a prominent conservative talk show in the Northwest. Lars is a close personal friend of Alex and Art Laws and has benefitted from insider deals on autos for he and his friends and associates from the Laws family. These owners are nothing less than wolves in sheeps’ clothing spreading an absurd spin on their paticular plight as they try to blame the Obama administration. This is pure hogwash or I’ll eat my hat!!! Art laws married into and destroyed a very good business. He convientally chose Lars and KEX and the conservative running lackey dogs in the Northwest to sell his individual customized brand of redneck in a very progressive town. It didn’t work and he’s now on the hook for millions of $$$$. Lars Larson has jumped on this storyline and took it nat’l to help generate sympathy for some of the biggest crooks in the Northwest. I know, I worked there and I got robbed by Art and Alex Laws just like a hundred other people who made the mistake of working for them. I could say a lot more but it is sufficient to say, as WS did over 500 yrs ago: Much Ado About Nothing!!! Screw these self- serving pricks and screw the Conservative movement in the U.S. for allowing this cheap and tawdry display of partisanship to become yet another urban legend fro white crooks.
May 29th, 2009 at 1:39 amThese dealerships should go and “whine” to the GOP they gave money too, who voted against the auto bailout. This recalled an article I had saved from Dec ‘08 below.
Conservatives Oppose Bush Plan to Help Auto Industry
A letter signed by 22 GOP members in the House objects to White House plan to transfer some of the $700b rescue money to the Big Three.
Roll Call Staff – Roll Call
December 16, 2008
House conservatives, in a letter to President George W. Bush, objected Wednesday to a White House plan to transfer a portion of the $700 billion financial rescue plan to save the Big Three U.S. automakers.
The letter, signed by 22 GOP Members including Republican Study Committee Chairman Jeb Hensarling (Texas) and incoming RSC Chairman Tom Price (Ga.), said using part of the bailout funds would violate Congressional intent.
The lawmakers warned of dire, long-term consequences for the economy if the bailout money is used to help the automakers. They suggested that the companies instead restabilize their assets through more traditional means, such as Chapter 11 bankruptcy.
“Congress never voted for a federal bailout of the automobile industry, and the only way for [Troubled Asset Relief Program] funds to be diverted to domestic automakers is with explicit congressional approval,” the Members wrote. “Tempting as it is to step in with a federal bailout, American taxpayers cannot afford to save every company facing financial peril. Last year’s federal deficit was the highest nominal deficit in U.S. history, and many economists believe this year’s deficit will exceed $1 trillion.”
The letter is the latest in a series of efforts by House Republicans to stop the government from bailing out the American auto industry. Only 32 House Republicans voted with Democrats to pass a $14 billion bailout bill on Wednesday.
The measure later died in the Senate.

Again the Republican’s are the death of America!!
May 29th, 2009 at 3:32 amSilver found that “88 percent of the contributions from car dealers went to Republican candidates
No wonder why people hate and mistrust car dealers so much. 88% of them are Republicans.
May 29th, 2009 at 4:32 amI’ve had enough time to cool my jets, so to speak, on this non-story story. My axe to grind on this deal is that we attention-payers saw this coming 10 days ago. It is an absurd stretch of the imagination even for the most right wing elements of this country to think that Chrysler didthis based on anything other than sales and service. The Laws and Larson show should not guide public debate any more than the soap opera Days Of Our Lives. This family has “disengenuous” written all over it just as Lars Larson does. This is a business scam pure and simple, engineered by right wing wackos, pure and simple: nothing more and nothing less.
May 29th, 2009 at 4:34 amIt would be fair and balanced if the government required all the dealers who contributed to democrats to close first, since they are in the minority. Being as they are democratic supporters, they must hate the free market and love socialist spread the wealth approaches, and so they are the most deserving to be closed.
No… really…. if the democratic supporting dealers were the majority of closures, would the conservatives still be angry? And, in fact, what are the percentage breakdowns? That is: @88% of dealers supported conservatives, and @12% supported democrats. What percent of each respective percentages are being closed? That would be a more accurate number to work with in this partisan and pointless meme.
The conservatives are trying desperately to find some niche, somewhere, somehow where they can play out their martyrdom fantasies (while not actually being victimized, of course).
And those who make money by manipulating money ADD NOTHING to the market or society — they are parasites on the system that artificially drive up prices, so that the investors can make more money for doing nothing of measurable value.
F#CK the bond holders and investors — every investment involves risk: every investment is a gamble.
Sometimes, when you gamble, you lose.
Tough s#it, you big pansy crybabies.
May 29th, 2009 at 7:57 amI will put this out there for the bloggers to think about.
I think that GOP run companies are laying off people to undermine America and OUR President.
May 29th, 2009 at 10:51 amAs Press Secretary Robert Gibbs explained to Garrett, it is Chrysler — not the federal government — that is in charge of selecting which dealerships will be closed.
Who now owns Chrysler?

Shareholders do not make operational decisions for corporations. You should probably go take a business class or something. Any class, actually.
