Tancredo: Sotomayor Is A Member Of The ‘Latino KKK Without The Hoods Or The Nooses’

Seizing the opportunity to vilify a female, Hispanic Supreme Court nominee, noted bigot Tom Tancredo has emerged from obscurity to denounce Judge Sonia Sotomayor. Earlier this week, Tancredo declared her to be a “racist” who should be “disqualified” from serving on the bench.

This afternoon on CNN, he went further, attacking her affiliation with the National Council of La Raza as equivalent to being a member of the Ku Klux Klan:

TANCREDO: If you belong to an organization called La Raza, in this case, which is, from my point of view anyway, nothing more than a Latino — it’s a counterpart — a Latino KKK without the hoods or the nooses. If you belong to something like that in a way that’s going to convince me and a lot of other people that it’s got nothing to do with race. Even though the logo of La Raza is “All for the race. Nothing for the rest.” What does that tell you?

SANCHEZ: Alright. We’re not talking about — we’re not talking about La Raza –

TANCREDO: She’s a member! She’s a member of La Raza!

Watch it

The La Raza line is the latest right-wing attack on Sotomayor. Right-wing groups have been waging war against La Raza since the 2006 immigration rallies. Conservatives, including Rep. Charles Norwood (R-GA), claim the group “supports racist groups calling for the secession of the western United States as a Hispanic-only homeland.” The right-wing blog Stop The ACLU calls La Raza “an anti-white extremist group.”

These attacks — promoted by Drudge — are only going to escalate. Of course, the characterizations are wildly false. La Raza is the nation’s largest Latino civil rights and advocacy organization that focuses on such nefarious issues as “civil rights/immigration, education, employment and economic status, and health.” Used to these attacks, La Raza has a long fact-sheet debunking the unhinged claims of the right, including pointing out that “La Raza” translates as “the people,” not “the race,” as the right wing suggests.

Tancredo echoed a popular right-wing myth, claiming the group’s slogan is “All for the race, nothing for the rest.” When ThinkProgress asked a La Raza spokeswoman, she replied, “No. That’s very much incorrect.” In fact, the true slogan is “Strengthening America by promoting the advancement of Latino families.” A far cry from Tancredo’s egregiously false, race-based characterization.

I also just checked with my secretary who is a New York Rican. She confirmed that “raza” means “race.” (not the kind you run, she clarified).

When referring to people, La Raza means “the race.”

You know, each time one of you “conservatives” posts, you invariably show your own innate stupidity, particularly in your ability to understand language.

If you understood foreign languages, or if your “wife” did, then you’d know direct translations from a language dictionary seldom show the actual meaning of a foreign word.

LA Raza does NOT mean “the Race” when spoken in context. It means “THE PEOPLE”.

“According to the National Council of La Raza, the term “La Raza” has its origins in early 20th century Latin American literature and translates into English most closely as “the people,” or, according to some scholars, “the Latino people of the New World.”

The term was coined by Mexican scholar José Vasconcelos to reflect the fact that the people of Latin America are a mixture of many of the world’s races, cultures, and religions. Some people have mistranslated “La Raza” to mean “The Race,” implying that it is a term meant to exclude others. In fact, the full term coined by Vasconcelos, “La Raza Cósmica,” meaning the “cosmic people,” was developed to reflect not purity but the mixture inherent in the Latino people. This is an inclusive concept, meaning that Latinos share with all other peoples of the world a common heritage and destiny. ”

  67. Xisithrus says:

La Raza (literally “The Race”) is sometimes used to denote people of Chicano (i.e. Mexican American) and Mexican descent and the Hispanic world, as well by mestizos who share Native American or national Hispanic heritage.

The term originated in the 1925 book La Raza Cósmica written by Mexican writer José Vasconcelos. He described La Raza Cosmica as the product of gradual racial mixing that was already underway in the Hispanic world. Vasconcelos believed that eventually all of the people within the Spanish Empire would be completely mixed into a new race. -wikipedia

  68. WAYNEBRO says:

La Raza means “The People” meaning the people of all Latin descent. That’s what it means. The translation is not direct and only a complete moron tries to translate directly from a dictionary.

    For example, when “Conservative For Progress” sings his Party Marching song “Horst Wessel Lied”, and says the following line;

Die Strasse frei den braunen Bataillonen“, which literally translated from the dictionary means “The Streets freely that brown battalions“,(which seems to mean nothing) however for those who actually SPEAK German, they know that it translates to “Clear the Streets for the Brown Battalions“.

The word “Clear” never appears in the sentence, however if you SPEAK the language, then you understand what it actually means when they say the term “Die Strasse Frei”.

That’s why when you stand there with an English\German dictionary however, like a bumbling tourist, no one actually can understand you and you can’t understand them.

Because translations from foreign languages are NOT precise.

If it were a word for word translation, then all anyone would ever need to learn a foreign language is a dictionary.

But it’s NOT. Language translations are NOT precise, so therefore you need someone who actually KNOWS what they’re talking about, instead of MORONS, with language dictionaries.

Conservatives continue to prove what undereducated idiots they really are, each time they post.

Gutierrez: If worse comes to worst, and we have to resort to that means, it would be self defense.

    Reporter: Do you hate gringos?

    Gutierrez: Yes I do.

Reporter: Is there a time limit as to when it might be determined that worst had come to worst?

Gutierrez: Well, I can only make a personal decision. If the attacks on my person and my property continue as they have been doing then it will only be a matter of a few years. Last year part of my property in Crystal City was burned. Two months ago my home was burned in Crystal City. In 1963 I was kidnapped and coerced, or attempted to be coerced, by gringo elements. In the whole attempt to create an organization and movement, I have been abused and misused by a lot of people. If this continues, within a few years I will no longer try to work with anybody.

In Central America, the word is not pejorative. In Cuba, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, and Panama the term refers to U.S. citizens (regardless of race).[1] In the Dominican Republic it also means a non-free range store bought chicken (pollo gringo), -=Wiki

Yes. “raza” can be translated as “race”
As in “razas de perros” = dog breeds

    See the small difference?
That is what Tan-pedo and the rest of the RWN are doing.
    Showing their ignorance.

La Raza and National Movimiento Estudiantil Chicano de Aztlan (MEChA) were movements within the larger Chicano movement of the 70s and 80s. The groups are still around, of course.

Tancredo was born in Denver, Colorado to Adeline Lombardi and Gerald Tancredo. Both sets of his grandparents emigrated from Italy. He attended St. Catherine’s Elementary School and Holy Family High School there. He graduated from the University of Northern Colorado with a degree in political science. Tancredo was active with the College Republicans and a conservative, nonpartisan organization, Young Americans for Freedom (YAF). As a Republican student activist Tancredo spoke in support of the Vietnam War. After graduating from the University of Northern Colorado he became eligible to serve in Vietnam in June 1969. Tancredo has said he went for his physical, telling doctors he’d been treated for depression, and eventually got a “1-Y” deferment. In 1976, while teaching history at Drake Junior High School in Denver, he ran for and won a seat in the Colorado House of Representatives. He served two terms (1977–1981) and was one of the leaders of a vocal group of conservative legislators opposing the policies of Colorado Governor Dick Lamm.

The San Francisco La Raza Lawyers Association (SFLRLA) was founded in 1971 by Mario Obledo, Cruz Reynoso, and Luis Garcia.

    Quotes from Obledo:

Obledo: “We’re going to take over all the political institutions of California. In five years the Hispanics are going to be the majority population of this state.”

Caller: “You also made the statement that California is going to become a Hispanic state, and if anyone doesn’t like it, they should leave. Did you say that?”
Obledo: “I did. They ought to go back to Europe.”

Interesting. I don’t think these people actually have any power, so I really don’t care, but interesting.

  179. Purple State / Lavender Boy says:

Re: The whole issue of the translation of “la raza”.

Look, it doesn’t matter what it means, but the fact is that cultures DO have words that have meanings deeper than direct translations can provide. “La raza” may mean “the race” in English, but to Hispanics, the meaning is much deeper and not directly translatable.

Just shut the book on this already. Sotomayor is going to be voted in.

  189. Try2keepup says:

La Raza (literally “The Race”) sometimes denotes people of Mexican American and Mexican descent, the Hispanic world, and mestizos who share Native American or national Hispanic heritage.

In 1925 Mexican writer José Vasconcelos described La Raza Cosmica as the product of gradual racial mixing already underway in the Hispanic world. Vasconcelos predicted all people within the Spanish Empire would be completely mixed into a new race.

It’s about race. You can spin it, deconstruct it, gloss it over, redefine it for political correctness, but La Raza is the race. Ms. Sotomayor has an Hispanic chip on her shoulder, like it or not. She is a bright lady who has overcome adversity. That alone does not qualify her to sit as a Federal Judge or a Supreme Court Justice.

  190. cdwriteme says:

I’m Chicano and to the best of my understanding the term “La Raza” came into use from a novel describing the “cosmic race”. The “cosmic race”, as best I understand it, refers to the universal mixed character of peoples in and around Mexico, having bloodlines that are indigenous as well as European, African, and more.

As far as La Raza the organization, I don’t really know what Tancredo is talking about. I’ve only seen it perform as an advocacy and education institution.

I really think from this example as well as numerous others that right-wingers are simply using the strategy of telling such large whoppers of lies that it throws off people. It would be like a bunch of convicted wife beaters arguing against a new director of a women’s shelter because they view her as having sexist attitudes towards men.

Oh right-wingers, you better hope that heaven and hell don’t exist, cause if they do you should move to the desert right now to start acclimating.

  191. Reparations4TheBlackHolocaustNOW says:

The cry La RAZA comes from the so called Chicano struggles of Los Angeles, “Que Viva La Raza!”, “long live the race” a cry that accompanies La Raza, comes from racist Chicanos, Mexican-Americans with an inferior complex, with a victimhood complex.

La Raza ONLY includes Mexicans and Mexican-Ameircans(Chicanos).

No self-respecting Latino would EVER use the term La RAza with a Latino or American audience.

The Term comes from the so called Chicano struggles and the fact that they believe that Mexican-Americans are better, superior than other Latinos and white AND black Americans.

Additionally, La Raza is never used to talk about family or anything else that the other poster claimed.

La Raza is used by racist Chicanos and Mexicans, period end of story, Everything else is an excuse to justify racism coming from the left and very racist Chicano groups.

  192. Evil Spaniard says:

  198. Captain Ronald says:

This spokesman perfectly embodies today’s GOPster tactics. The rhetoric is utterly ridiculous and can only appeal to a narrow demographic.
Apparently, GOPs are using such tactics because this is what they’ve always done, and because they have been successful for so many years in using them, this is all they know how to do.
It remains to be seen if such tactics will still work, or if they are now so totally repudiated that the GOP will soon be reduced to a regional party with a national effect ranging from little to none.
As I see it, there are only two ways Repubs could retake control of the federal government:
    1. Obama proves to be a monumental failure.
    2. There is another 9/11 (predicted by most credible experts as a virtual certainty within 7 years).
If the latter comes to pass, because Cheney and his running dogs are yapping so frequently and vigorously re. Obama’s “naively dangerous” policies re. national security, they would have positioned themselves to say “I told you so” if there is another 9/11. That’s why Cheney & Co. are yapping.
After all, recent polls show that Cheney has gained in popularity since his assault re. Obama’s national security views, and that the people still favor torture.
If Repubs return to power as a reaction to a new 9/11, the reign of tyranny they would institute would make Nazi Germany seem like the Netherlands.
“How fortunate it is for government that the people do not think”–A. Hitler.
When the towers fell, Osama gloated that this would eventually spell the end of democracy because the U.S. would eventually install tyranny in reaction.
How prophetic will he turn out to be?

  199. Daddy-O says:

    Conservatives don’t like it.

Except to the WHITE racists, of course.

  200. Daddy-O says:

The Evil Spaniard is right on.

The only reason we have ‘racist’ organizations like La Raza or the NAACP is simple: They’re only trying to protect themselves from persecution.

The blind eye that white racists turn towards American history and even today’s racism is amazingly selective. I guess now that we have a colored President, racism is GONE, right?

Whew. I wouldn’t want to live in the head that gives a home to idiocy like that.

  201. ElBruce says:

    Reparations4TheBlackHolocaustNOW Says:

It’s cute how you guys keep saying “end of story” after making false claims. Just because not being part of the human race makes you a minority, you don’t have to fear discrimination. Us humans are actually decent folk, and the U.S. Constitution protects you from being discriminated against, even for being unhuman.

Sotomayor is a member of La Raza.In addition to her work on the bench, Judge Sotomayor is an adjunct professor at New York University School of Law and a lecturer-in-law at Columbia Law School. She has received many honors including, most recently, an award from the National Association of Women Lawyers.

According the American Bar Association, Sotomayor is a member of the NCLR, which bills itself as the largest national Hispanic civil rights and advocacy organization in the U.S.
    http://www.abanet.org/publiced/hispanic_s.html

Meaning “the Race,” La Raza also has connections to groups that advocate the separation of several southwestern states from the rest of America.

  203. cdmsr says:

Is the NAACP the black KKK? The Jewish League the Jewish KKK? The numerous organizations formed by the many different races and nationalities that have come to the US throughout successive waves of immigration, organizations that were created to obtain and promote the rights, protections and opportunities that were the very promise of this nation, do all of these associations exist for the terrorizing and persecution of the others’ members?

Not no, but hell no! Tancredo’s statement is false on its face and as ludicrous as one would expect from him and his ilk.

The literal translation of La Raza is irrelavant, a moronic smokescreen. And all of the organizations referenced above have probably found themselves, at one time or another, in the well-known ’strange bedfellows’ position. But political alignment on narrow issues does not constitute identical ideology. More smokescreen b.s. from the Right(Wrong) Wing.

  204. telestai2 says:

  206. FirmMarci says:

    ElBruce asked:
Now it’s just “connections to groups,” huh? What connections? What groups?

    WHAT IS RAZA
    http://www.mayorno.com/aztlan.html

“La Raza” (The Race) is a broad term which refers to those whose ancestry is indigenous to the area of Mexico (or “Aztlan”). MEChA members refer to themselves as “La Raza” or “Raza,” but the term itself is used to indicate camaraderie among those in different organizations with the same objectives. There are a number of organizations who consider themselves to be La Raza.

The most visible of these groups are MEChA, The Brown Berets de Aztlan, OLA (Organization for the Liberation of Aztlan), La Raza Unida Party, and the “Nation of Aztlan” to name a few. Although the activism of these organizations vary from somewhat radical to extremely radical, they share the same objectives, the “liberation of Aztlan.” Each follows the Raza manifesto http://www.mayorno.com/aztlan.html (sometimes called “El Plan Espiritual de Aztlan”). The Nation of Aztlan, tied to La Voz de Aztlan disseminates the exact same propaganda that MEChA spreads including antisemitic propaganda. Believers in the Aztlan legend insist upon the indivisibility of “La Raza” and their common goals, one of them being the need to abolish the border between the U.S. and Mexico. There is a myriad of Raza college newspaper. Some are El Popo, Aztlan News, Chispas, Gente de Aztlan (UCLA), Voz Fronteriza (U.C. San Diego), La Voz Mestiza (U.C. Irvine) and La Voz Berkeley. It is not uncommon for the writers of these publications to refer to the U.S., as “AmeriKKKa.”
