Sessions ‘uneasy’ with Gingrich’s ‘rhetoric’ against Sotomayor.

On Wednesday, Former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich drew attention to himself when he tweeted that Judge Sonia Sotomayor should “withdraw” her nomination for the Supreme Court because she’s a “Latina woman racist.” Since then, some Senate Republicans have sought to distance themselves from Gingrich. Sen. Orrin Hatch (R-UT) said he disagreed while Sen. John Cornyn (R-TX) called it “terrible.” Now, Sen. Jeff Sessions (R-AL), the ranking Republican on the Senate Judiciary Committee, has told the Washington Post that he is “uneasy” with the rhetoric:

Sen. Jeff Sessions (R-Ala.), the top Republican on the Senate Judiciary Committee, said today he was “uneasy” over allegations by former House Speaker Newt Gingrich and talk-show host Rush Limbaugh that Sotomayor is racist. Sessions, who lost a 1986 bid for a federal judgeship amid concerns over his own racial sensitivity, said Republicans should focus on Sotomayor’s legal record to try to divine what sort of a Supreme Court justice she would make.

“I’m uneasy,” Sessions said in a 30-minute interview in his office in the Russell Senate Office Building. “I don’t think that’s good rhetoric. The question is, has the judge gone too far or not, given the established law of the land?”

Why would she thank the welfare system. After her father died her mother worked two jobs while raising two children by herself. Princeton scholarships are not part of the welfare system. Do you know anything about anything Merdad?

With all the moronic vitriol spewed forth by the right over a moderate/right Supreme Court nominee, I wonder why President Obama didn’t just appoint a liberal in the first place.
The court has been out of balance for far too long.

By the way, don’t waste your time reading the troll who posted at 1. I took one for the team and read his post. It’s the same old moronic anti-socialist diatribe that you hear from all Limhawg fans.

  5. tom says:

Hey, Doodlebug. Merdad should not be blamed in this. He is a product of the “republican welfare system”. His thoughts are given to him daily by the likes of Limpballs and Little Seanie Vanity. He has been raised to believe that government is incompetent when, in fact, the key problem is that his idols (GDumbya, Ronnie RayGun, etc.) are incompetent.

He is fed a constant diet of half-truths and is too lazy to evaluate them or think for himself. Confusing “welfare” with “scholarships” earned on the merits of a person’s achievements is an understandable point of confusion for morons like Merdad.

Rush hates 2/3rds of the USAs population, which he constantly points fingers at. I would say Rush loves Rush, not the USA.

    In 2001,
President George W. Bush nominated former Justice Department lawyer Miguel Estrada to a seat on the federal courts of appeals. In that instance, as today, the nominee was was a Hispanic with a compelling story and impressive qualifications. And some of the very people who are today praising Sotomayor spent their time devising extraordinary measures to kill Estrada’s chances.

Born in Honduras, Estrada came to the United States at 17, not knowing a word of English. He learned the language almost instantly, and within a few years was graduating with honors from Columbia University and heading off to Harvard Law School. He clerked for Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy, was a prosecutor in New York, and worked at the Justice Department in Washington before entering private practice.

Estrada’s nomination for a federal judgeship set off alarm bells among Democrats. There is a group of left-leaning organizations — People for the American Way, NARAL, the Alliance for Justice, the Leadership Conference on Civil Rights, the NAACP, and others — that work closely with Senate Democrats to promote Democratic judicial nominations and kill Republican ones. They were particularly concerned about Estrada.

Democratic Senators opposed the nomination of Estrada, noting his lack of any prior judicial experience at the local, state, or federal level. Democratic Senators also objected to the refusal by the Office of the Solicitor General to release samples of Estrada’s writings while employed there. To the best of my knowledge he was never accused of being a stupid, affirmative action, racist who intended to make law from the bench. He was simply not qualified on any level. Bushco tried to fly a nominee who didn’t have any qualifications beyond his loyalty to Bushco.

On the other hand, even the most rabid Reichwhiner isn’t foolish enough to say that Judge Sotomayor lacks the professional acumen and experience to sit on the Supreme Court. That’s why they are making sh!t up to screech about.

Seriously, stupid trolls. One can’t legitimately compare Estrada and Sotomayor.

…Democrats who want us to ignore their racist past and failed socialism that have caused so much harm to black Americans.

Absolutely not. The Democratic party prior to the passage of the Civil Rights act was the standard-bearer for institutional racism in the U.S. We don’t want that ignored, because we want to prevent it from happening again.

We also concede that LBJ’s “Great Society” and “War on Poverty” were abysmal failures, largely due to the racist assumptions underlying their application. For the most obvious example, putting thousands of black people into sky-rise housing projects was extremely detrimental to their chances at opportunity down the road.

Again, we don’t deny any of this. We openly admit it all. We don’t want to sweep it under the rug. We’re trying to do better today. How about you?

    FirmMarci Says:

Estrada’s nomination for a federal judgeship set off alarm bells among Democrats. There is a group of left-leaning organizations — People for the American Way, NARAL, the Alliance for Justice, the Leadership Conference on Civil Rights, the NAACP, and others — that work closely with Senate Democrats to promote Democratic judicial nominations and kill Republican ones. They were particularly concerned about Estrada.

It seems obvious that they opposed him due to his qualifications, and not because of his ethnicity.

What is also obvious is that you can’t tell the difference.

  96. notinstl says:

the problem with both sides is they get so caught up in rhetoric that no honest discussion can take place. Sotomayor will be confirmed…however, had a white male made the comment she made in 2001 and reversed the roles….he would be labeled a racist…and definitely not confirmed.

    Liddy isn’t a conservative….he’s an entertainer(supposedly)…remember?

  97. Wayne Ant Schneider says:

I can’t personally speak to “what kind of man” Alberto Gonzales is, but I think I can say with absolute confidence that he is a crappy attorney, with no understanding of the Constitution or its proper interpretation.

  98. Robt says:

I think the GOPers are sendng out the Coulters, Rushs, Becks et al to purposely be extreme far right that it will allow Sessions and other republicans to be able to appear as if they are rational people. In comparison to the Hannitys and Ingrams. They probably feel that Rush makes Michelle Backman sound normal.

  99. curious says:

Uneasy? But not enough for any of them to come right out and say STOP IT. Not that upset. Not upset enough to take control of their own party and make it stand for something other then the last eight years. Not enough to take it away from the Limbaugh’s, and Gingrich, a man who had to leave as speaker because of ethics violations. Not enough to tell Liddy that he is a felon and a man of no morals and a dirty mind. They let him speak for them too.

Upset, uneasy? Not really, and not enough. They are allowing their own party to be destroyed, because they are afraid to take on the very spokespeople that represent their party. Going, going, gone. You cannot have it both ways. You cannot allow the slime to rule, and then claim some minor distress at what they say and do.
