Despite Call To ‘Move On’ From Personally Attacking Sotomayor, Steele Recently Attacked Her Personally

RNC Chairman Michael Steele smiling.Earlier today, The Plum Line’s Greg Sargent flagged RNC Chairman Michael Steele saying on Bill Bennett’s radio show this morning that conservatives should avoid making personal attacks on Judge Sonia Sotomayor. Rather than “slammin’ and rammin’” her, “move on to the substance of the conversation about what this woman believes, why she believes it,” said Steele. Listen here:

Despite Steele’s current attempt to focus the debate on Sotomayor’s judicial philosophy, just two weeks ago he had no problem engaging. While hosting Bennett’s radio show, Steele described Sotomayor as “not a bell ringer” and “rather abrasive”:

STEELE: But the next justice nominee will be a female and I bet you a donut and a dime it will be hispanic. But, which case, that would be Ms. Sotomayor. But the problem with someone like her is, you know, while her story is compelling and all of that. Moving from the projects and you know, going to some of the best schools in the country and then to the federal bench. She’s not, she’s not a bell ringer. She’s not one of these justices who’s really kind of distinguished herself and made a name for herself on the Appeals court. And I think that that, you know, is something worth noting and looking at since, you know, gee that was a standard they put up against those Republican nominees. So I figure the standard should apply here as well. But they also, you know, the word on the street is that she is rather abrasive. And that’s the one thing the Supreme Court is not. Is a place for abrasive personalities.

Listen here:

It’s ironic that during his May 8th appearance on Bennett’s show, Steele justified his personal attacks on Sotomayor by saying “that was a standard they put up against those Republican nominees. So I figure the standard should apply here as well.” As Sargent points out, Steele argued today that “we don’t need to play this the way the Democrats have played it in the past.”

Additionally, Steele claimed back then that Sotomayor had not “distinguished herself and made a name for herself on the Appeals court.” But conservative law professor Eric Posner examined the data of Sotomayor’s record and found that she “may well be one of the top appellate judges in the country.”

The damage is already done GOPers. Do you honestly think the Latino population (and women for that matter) are going to forget the attacks on Stotomayor? All these rich old white guys, Buchanan, Limpballs, Tancredo, have been basically calling her a racist. Good job! You have alienated the fastest growing electorate in the U.S.!

  8. gummble-bee-itch says:

Maybe he changed his mind? Why not give Steele the benefit of the doubt, at least long enough for him to attack Sotomayor AFTER having called for an end to such comments. I’m sure he’ll be back on the attack in a matter of hours or days, but at least give him the opportunity to do so. Chastising him for something he said weeks ago is cheap.

And what is becoming evident as a part of this strategy is to demonize “how the dems did this in the past”. Anyone else hearing this repeatedly from different sources? I think there is a subtle strategy included in this (overall, they want to destroy the credibility of the Democrats in general — yes, standing orders and all, but at this time it seems to be being ramped up. I suppose the idea is that they can try to make themselves the “lesser of two evils” for future elections).

Or I’m dizzy with hunger. I don’t know. I should go eat.

  24. Bob says:

P.D. is right, the damage is done. The bigots aren’t changing any minds. 28. Purple State / Lavender Boy says:

Does Bill Bennett even have a radio show anymore? Mr. Steele seems to fill in for him quite a bit.

That being said, Mr. Steele should respectfully look into a better career if he were to find himself out of the political circuits. He really seems to put his foot in his mouth when he gets on the radio.

I’m not so sure that Steele’s comments were as spiteful as those from Gingrich, Rush, or Glenn Beck, but he has to now stick by his words now and not those that he said in the past. No attacks on Sotomayor as a person, as a member of her people, or as a woman; it’s been high time that her words be treated as the basis for her selection to the SCOTUS, not her ethnicity or gender.

“It was NOT a hoax. Early on when we were looking for someone to waterboard, an email was sent out looking for someone to do it and I mistakenly said it would be staged. That was my mistake and a misunderstanding.

But that was early and NOT TRUE AT ALL. It was not staged. NOT AT ALL. When it happened several days later, it was real, honest, actual, not staged.

Yeah, I hear you. It is TGIF or Freaky Friday. Although Steele is comedy gold, there is just so much garbage that I can take from my brain when it comes to “dat’s how we roll baby” Steele and the GOP from wingnut paradise.

“We should be watching and studying the GOP playbook”

And that playbook has been watered down so much that the party now has a new leader: Boss Limbaugh, chief gas bag radio host. Even Nixon, the king of the Watergate scandal, would turn over in his grave to this 21st century GOP party minus a real leader of the party.

  49. ElBruce says:

And that’s the one thing the Supreme Court is not. Is a place for abrasive personalities.

Oh no, not at all. You know, for any of these attacks to stick they’d have to impeach and remove their last three appointments. I hereby invite them to do so. I’ll be willing to give up Sotomayor in exchange for Thomas, Alito and Roberts

    .

    oilforillegals Says:

    http://gawker.com/5272691/confirmed-mancows-waterboarding-was-completely-fake

    hehehehe

Um, all of the things they’re saying there are saying the opposite of the conclusion they and you are reaching. He was trying to make it a “hoax” as in pretending to be waterboarded without going through the actual procudure. But then he really got waterboarded, so had to admit it was torture.

I’m looking at the same quotes you’re looking at, and it’s clear that non only did he have to admit that what he underwent is torture, the procedure he went through barely even qualifies as waterboarding, despite his intent to make it appear more legit than it was.

Although he’s getting a lot of attention at the moment, this is probably going to hurt Mancow’s career quite a lot. Left-wingers don’t listen to talk radio, and right-wingers don’t like having their jocks disagree with what’s comfortable for them to believe.
