Fox News personality Glenn Beck will kick off his Common Sense comedy tour “with a sold-out show at the Ellie Caulkins Opera House” in Denver, CO today, “followed by five shows in five nights around the country.” Asked why he was starting in Denver, Beck said, “The people in the mountain west get it, generally,” he said. “They’re going to be the ones that step to the plate and slap America across the face and say, ‘Sit down and shut up.” Beck recently said that “[t]he live shows give him the chance to see firsthand what sort of themes are resonating among his regular followers.” One of the jokes that apparently resonated so well that it ended up in his tour promotional materials began, “You know that foam when somebody vomits? I took that foam and made it into a diamond.” No telling where it went from there, as the clip cuts off before the punch line. Watch Beck’s promotional video:
that probably WAS the punchline…
sick.
June 1st, 2009 at 11:33 amIs that how he tries to cover his lies now, by calling it comedy?
June 1st, 2009 at 11:33 amRight-wingers are only funny when it is unintentional.
June 1st, 2009 at 11:35 am“The people in the mountain west get it, generally,” he said. “They’re going to be the ones that step to the plate and slap America across the face and say, ‘Sit down and shut up.”
As a resident of the mountain west, I’d like to sit Beck down on a barrel cactus and shut his mouth up with a large cowpie.
June 1st, 2009 at 11:38 amIf Americans finally do ‘get it’, they will b*tch-slap Beck across the face.
June 1st, 2009 at 11:40 amI get it.
I can slap.
Come here, Glenn.
June 1st, 2009 at 11:41 amUnderstand the name of the “tour” was misspelled:
Common Cents: a tour in which this commentator is going to take money from the common people, one penny at a time.
June 1st, 2009 at 11:41 amThis is why the right wing doesn’t produce any decent comedians. They don’t understand funny. They think mocking the powerless is high comedy. Heck, they think just mocking is high comedy.
Case in point.
June 1st, 2009 at 11:42 amBeck certainly did take the vomit foam– it’s on his show every time he speaks.
June 1st, 2009 at 11:46 amSeriously, if you haven’t checked out the link TP provided, you need to.
I was trying to figure out what actual comedians Beck would be introducing (he must be acting just as MC, right?) and it appears that Beck is the comedian.
Question: don’t comedians usually tell… y’know… jokes?
I don’t think that being a joke on stage qualifies as “comedy”.
June 1st, 2009 at 11:46 amBeck: “You know that foam when somebody vomits? I took that foam and made it into a diamond.”
Sounds like Beck is getting his material from his years as a drug-addled alcoholic...
Must have been some party, eh Glen?
June 1st, 2009 at 11:47 amStrange how reight-wing humor seems always based in violence of one form or another…
June 1st, 2009 at 11:50 amOn comedy tour, Beck is seeking audience of people who ‘get it’
Wouldn’t be easier for Beck to just do his routine with a laugh track?
June 1st, 2009 at 11:51 amI saw this get promoted before I sat down to watch Star Trek. Apparently, they’re trying to get his comedy show shown on movie screens. 450 movie screens on Thursday.
I heard no applause or laughs from the audience. I heard a few hisses, but no laughs. Of course, that happens when the promo is full of Glenn Beck crying in order to “get it out of his system” before the show.
I might go just to see how horrible it could be, but I’m not sure if I want to waste my $10 on a Thursday night.
June 1st, 2009 at 11:53 amFAIL!! He’s going to spew a bunch of lies and say “well I’m just a comedian.”
June 1st, 2009 at 11:53 amRemember, you will never get your $10 or your Thursday night back.
June 1st, 2009 at 11:55 am“You know that foam when somebody vomits? I took that foam and made it into a diamond.”
– - Don’t quit your day job Glenn, such as it is.
June 1st, 2009 at 11:55 amshoeless Says:
Remember, you will never get your $10 or your Thursday night back.
True, but sometimes you need to sacrifice for the greater good.
What do you say, ThinkProgress bloggers and fans? I’m game. I will go out to see the Glenn Beck movie experience and let people know on Friday about how good or bad it will be.
June 1st, 2009 at 11:57 amThis was heavily advertised at the movies this weekend. It made me more nauseous than some of the things that came out of the old gypsy lady’s mouth in Drag Me to Hell.
June 1st, 2009 at 11:58 amThe man seems distinctly hypomanic.
June 1st, 2009 at 11:59 amI don’t think he will have ANY problem getting people to give a “slap across the face”…I wonder if he would consider “that” torture?
June 1st, 2009 at 12:02 pmNo, don’t do it to yourself! You could be scarred for life! You may never be able to laugh again!
June 1st, 2009 at 12:03 pmPerhaps he could take a few minutes out of his routine and urge his FANATICAL right-wing fan base to refrain from murdering doctors who are simply trying to worship in their CHURCHES.
But that’s probably asking too much of Glenn.
June 1st, 2009 at 12:03 pmglenn, people are laughing AT you, not WITH you
June 1st, 2009 at 12:03 pmGlenn is a treasonous POS.
Glenn the ReichWingers did slap America, but they used a gun and it is called murder…
…Reichwingers approve of terrorists, when it’s them doing the terror.
Fcuk the Republic Fascist Party
June 1st, 2009 at 12:08 pmI admit to being confused about Glenn Beck. I get that he’s a stand-up comedian and shock jock. What I don’t get is why he was every employed by what was ostensibly a news channel. It makes more sense now that he’s at Fox News since the whole channel plays like a surreal performance piece.
June 1st, 2009 at 12:09 pmI don;t have the link now but I think there was a diarist on Daily Kos who demonstrated what Beck is really all about–HIMSELF.
Oh I just noticed this (after starting to write) : “You know that foam when somebody vomits? I took that foam and made it into a diamond.”
That’s it right there, but it isn’t a joke to be shared, it’s a joke on his fans (and everyone else).
It’s pretty much all laid out in his biography. Beck was a crap comedian who found gold in extremism.
His hero was Rush Limbaugh, not for his political views but for the fact that high-school ‘educated’ podunk radio DJ Limbaugh was able to leverage personality (ie, blather and invective)into a persistent multimillion-dollar cash-cow.
What Beck has done is taken his crap ‘comedic’ schtick and turned it into commentary, by simply performing without a live audience.
This ‘comedy’ tour is just another aspect of the ‘media empire’ he’s been building. He didn’t make much as a ‘comedian’, but know he can make much more even though the material he isn’t any ‘funnier’
June 1st, 2009 at 12:10 pm“The people in the mountain west get it, generally”
Colorado currently has Democrats as Governor, both Senators, five of seven members of Congress, 40 of 65 state reps, and 20 of 35 state senators.
He’s right, Coloradans do “get it.”
June 1st, 2009 at 12:12 pmReally? I don’t get that at all.
Aren’t comedians supposed to be funny? Or at least witty?
June 1st, 2009 at 12:12 pmshoeless Says:
No, don’t do it to yourself! You could be scarred for life! You may never be able to laugh again!
I’m a masochist then.
June 1st, 2009 at 12:12 pmSLAP AMERICA ACROSS THE FACE [hmmmmm] . .
I guess Beck is now part of the HATE AMERICA CROWD Falafel Man and Hannity are always complaining about . .
Why does Glenn Beck HATE AMERICA?
June 1st, 2009 at 12:13 pmBorn and bred in the “mountain west,” I would happily administer Mr. Beck the slaps he so much seems to desire.
I’d mebbe use my Louisville Slugger, but it’s just a minor point.
June 1st, 2009 at 12:15 pmBeck said, “The people in the mountain west get it, generally,” he said. “They’re going to be the ones that step to the plate and slap America across the face”
What makes up “America” in Beck’s warped mind? I didn’t think “liberals or progressives” were included since they are generally considered by Beck et al to be unpatriotic unAmericans. So, logically (OK, I know that this is the weak point), Beck is looking for people to slap conservative Americans, the “true” Americans across the face. Didn’t that happen in November?
June 1st, 2009 at 12:16 pmOh, and Denver has had Democratic mayors for ages, and has been represented in Congress since the 70s by Diane DeGette and Pat Schroeder, reliable liberals. They must be shipping the audience in from Wyoming.
June 1st, 2009 at 12:17 pmLimbah, the butt, used to try to excuse his most egregious excrescences by claiming to be merely an “entertainer.”
It’s a short step from that to clown, like Blech…
June 1st, 2009 at 12:18 pmIsn’t this the guy who chokes “I love my country!” through a face full of tears?
And now he’s calling for “slap(ping) America across the face”?
Does he often advocate violence against those he loves?
This appears to be the mark of a very sick, dysfunctional man.
June 1st, 2009 at 12:20 pmUm… why don’t you ask Beck? He’s the one who started talking about “Americans who get it”.
But what’s really funny is watchpup pretending to seek clarification from someone. Almost as if he were interested in an honest exchange of views.
June 1st, 2009 at 12:24 pmwatchdog, it must be ruff going through life so doggone ignorant that it drives you barking mad and leaves you muttering, drooling and panting for relief from your mangy existence while knowing that at the end of your tail there is just more sniping from your own muzzle.
June 1st, 2009 at 12:25 pmThe Mountain West does get it and they added Democratic lawmakers at all levels in the past two elections and they delivered for Obama.
Yes Glenn, they do get it.
June 1st, 2009 at 12:33 pmtoiletintexas sounds like an ignorant redneck
of course, if he believes anything Beck says, he probably IS an ignorant redneck
June 1st, 2009 at 12:34 pmso watchpuppy, why ARE you so ignorant?

They’re the ones that sold you up the river you junior brown shirt
June 1st, 2009 at 12:37 pmSorry, Johnintexas. It is my right as an American to watch it, and I will. You’re in luck, since I’m not in Texas, so you won’t be able to stop me.
I won’t heckle, but I will see if anyone does. I’ll keep a count of how many times the audience laughs with the audience on screen. I’ll keep track of the audience’s demeanor and maybe even ask a few what they thought of the show.
Try to stop me.
June 1st, 2009 at 12:37 pmtoiletintexas must have a twisted idea of what a liberal is
of course, he’s an ignorant rube, so he has incorrect ideas handed to him by his radio every day
June 1st, 2009 at 12:38 pmJohnintexas Says:
“None of you who have commented so far are invited to watch Mr Beck on tour.”
Well, that’s a slap in the face, I’ll tell ya.
No problem, John, I don’t feel like driving 4 hours out into the Texas countryside to some cockroach infested dive and mingle with your fellow meth-heads who had to check their guns and their teeth at the door.
June 1st, 2009 at 12:39 pmI didn’t ask how it was apparent that you are ignorant
I asked why you are so ignorant
I don’t see how the progressive philosophy can be the cause of your ignorance

But don’t we want him to quit his day job, to get his ignorant hate speech off the airwaves? Perhaps we should be encouraging this change of career.
Ha ha ha, Glenn – very droll. You’ve got some real talent there! Perhaps you should do stand-up full time – have you considered it? You, sir, are a laugh-RIOT!
June 1st, 2009 at 12:41 pmDoes johnintexas write Beck’s comedy material?
June 1st, 2009 at 12:44 pmJohnintexas Says:
Uh-huh . . . sure they are . . . like the exchange of MSNBC pumping Obongo politically so that in return GE will receive lucrative government contracts . . . a scandal that makes Watergate look insignificant.
June 1st, 2009 at 12:35 pm
____________
And I’m sure you have some proof of this “conspiracy” and can point to specific quid pro quo instances in which career executive branch contracting agents were pressured to award contracts to GE in response to specific instances of MSNBC news coverage.
June 1st, 2009 at 12:45 pmnevermind that GE made more from their military supply businesses when the fear-addled war mongers were in charge

We don’t want your ignorant ass, Johnintexas. Never did, never will.
June 1st, 2009 at 12:47 pmFunny, I wish the opposite. I wish you were not so ignorant. You’d have a much more factual viewpoint.
You succumb to fear and hate, being the emotional ignorant that you are.
June 1st, 2009 at 12:48 pmTwo interesting facts from Rascalcat, alias “the Colorado Kid”.
1. The theater where Beck is “performing” has a maximum capacity of 1029 whole people.
2. There are 1030 people left in the Colorado GOP.
Nuff said.
June 1st, 2009 at 12:48 pmThat 1 leftover will be outside with a ‘god hates fags’ sign
June 1st, 2009 at 12:50 pmAnyone notice how the promo did not feature 1 joke? I’m sure it has something to do with glen beck being completely devoid of comedic talent (besides ironic humor that is).
June 1st, 2009 at 12:51 pmRascalcat Says:
1. The theater where Beck is “performing” has a maximum capacity of 1029 whole people.
At least 2058 of Beck’s half-witted fans can fit then. That’s a pretty good size crowd!

Beck is an idiot and a piece of garbage. That anyone would PAY to see him is astonishing to me then I read posts like yours and am reminded that there are some TRULY stupid people out there. Keep dragging down Americas collective IQ and revelling in your ignorance us liberals can always use a laugh

Only someone as stupid as YOU wouldnt get the difference
June 1st, 2009 at 1:18 pmRemember when Fox tried to come up with a right-wing version of The Daily Show, only they couldn’t think of anything funny to say?
June 1st, 2009 at 1:25 pmOh, they could think of plenty of funny things to say… they just weren’t funny to regular people.
June 1st, 2009 at 1:32 pmThank you EugeneDebs!
Glenn Beck needs to practice what he preaches and sit down and STFU! Beck should just slap himself. Dumb, rascist trolls like jockitchjohnintexas are the reason why the GOP is one big dying elephant. HAHAHA You just can’t stop hating on OUR President Barack H. Obama (HAHA)
June 1st, 2009 at 1:33 pmOkay, let’s get “Project: Beck Diamond” underway.
I will be taking this as seriously as I can. I will go into the nearest movie theater on Thursday to scope out the crowd to judge their attendance and reaction to the show. Granted, I’m only one person in a rather liberal state, so I’ll try to keep things as objective as possible, but anyone daring to do the same for a red-state showing?
I’m not advocating stirring up trouble–just to get a sense of what’s going on. Anything else I should take note of?
June 1st, 2009 at 1:45 pmWhy do we choose to take this Glen Beck serious. We are talking about a guy with no academic record to back his dumb views. What kind of society put up people like Beck and Coulter on TV to discuss legislature, programs and events that affect our lives. How can these folks with all the loko views and statements they make get on our mainstream tv. M. Savage said derogatory things about muslims, but yet CNN will interview him. The contant quest for higher ratings has destoyed newsworks, Bill O’Reily is around today because of just that. I would never never listen to Glen Beck, but thats just me.

1. I don’t think you got the gist of my experiment. I’m not there to do any laughing, heckling or taunting. This is a social experiment to see just how effective Beck is at getting to his audience. I plan to see how many people show to the screening, how effective Beck’s jokes are, and how responsive the crowd is.
This is a $10 payment to see if other people laugh at or with Beck.
2. Make no mistake, John, this is not a political round table. This is a COMEDY SHOW. I don’t expect any political discussion, unless it occurs outside of the movie theater. I might see it there, but I expect this to be a comedy show. Will it be on the level of Eddie Murphy’s Raw? We’ll see.

I’m a musician and I kinda have the feeling that in the future people will pay for live performances, because we have computer software that is very close to sounding like a musical instrument, with a modelled human touch. So, if a person that has never played the guitar, can click a button and sound like Jimi Hendrix, than what is the coolness about all this digital music really? Infact, I think that the more advanced this gets, the less interesting it becomes. We are still in awe over a youngster that can make the violin cry and we will definately be in even more awe when a person can actually do with their fingers that what we can do in an iPhone application.
