Cheney on same-sex marriage: ‘People ought to be free to enter into any kind of union.’
At the National Press Club today, former Vice President Dick Cheney gave some of his strongest comments yet in favor of same-sex marriage. Asked if “some form of legalized marriage” was “inevitable in the United States,” Cheney said that “freedom means freedom for everyone.” “I think people ought to be free to enter into any kind of union they wish,” said Cheney, adding that believes marriage should be regulated at the state level. Cheney’s answer at the press club was pretty much the same answer that he usually gives when asked about the subject. But in the past, Cheney has said that “people ought to be free to enter into any kind of relationship they want to.” Today, he used he word “union.”

Given recent developments in Iowa and elsewhere, is some form of legalized gay marriage inevitable in the United States?CHENEY: Well, I think, you know, freedom means freedom for everyone. And as many of you know, one of my daughters is gay and something that we’ve lived with for a long time in our family. I think people ought to be free to enter into any kind of union they wish. Any kind of arrangement they wish. The question of whether or not there ought to be a federal statute that governs this, I don’t support. I do believe that historically the way marriage has been regulated is at the state level, it has always been a state issue. And I think that’s the way it ought to be handled today. That is on a state by state basis. Different states will make different decisions, but I don’t have any problem with that. I think people ought to get a shot at that.

But to give Cheney credit, he’s further along the track to sanity on this issue than most of his conservative brethren (yes, he’s still evil on practically every other issue).
One of the things the late Harvey Milk said (and was in the “Milk” film) was that it’s harder to hate gays if they happen to be members of your family or your friends. This may be true in Cheney’s case. I’m sure he loves his daughter and his new grandchild by her.
But even Cheney has a ways to go yet.

I could NEVER respect a man who took an oath to support and defend the Constitution of the United States, and then decided it as too inconvenient to do so. I don’t understand how any truly patriotic American could. If you don’t believe in following the Constitution, then you don’t believe in America. The Constitution is America!

June 1st, 2009 at 5:56 pmSchool is out for the summer. Friendless and socially inept teens are flocking to TP like it’s a parked freight train. Now some graffitti is artful, but this is pure vandalism. Perhaps TP admin could pay some overtime to clean up these threads? I recommend that we regulars do not repost any of the kids’ babbling so that the clean-can be complete. Talking about it rather to it helps if you gotta say something, but this has devolved into garbage.

I’m a musician and I kinda have the feeling that in the future people will pay for live performances, because we have computer software that is very close to sounding like a musical instrument, with a modelled human touch. So, if a person that has never played the guitar, can click a button and sound like Jimi Hendrix, than what is the coolness about all this digital music really? Infact, I think that the more advanced this gets, the less interesting it becomes. We are still in awe over a youngster that can make the violin cry and we will definately be in even more awe when a person can actually do with their fingers that what we can do in an iPhone application.
