A British video game development firm is in the process of creating a video game based on the U.S. prison camp at Guantanamo Bay. Entitled “Gitmo: Rendition,” the game “depicts the prison in the near future — after its anticipated closing by the U.S. government — as a camp run by mercenaries who detain innocents sold off to their captors to serve as ‘lab rats’ in scientific experiments.” The game’s developer hired Moazzam Begg — a “British Muslim who was detained at the American military base at Guantanamo Bay for three years” before being released uncharged — as an adviser to help make the game “more realistic.” Begg and seven other Britons detained by the U.S. recently sued the British government, “claiming U.K. authorities were complicit in their abductions, detention and interrogations.” Watch the game trailer:
One question.
June 1st, 2009 at 2:55 pmAre the depicted ‘detainees’ of this game Bush/Cheney and other officials of their administation.
That’s a game I could get into.
Only PROSECUTIONS and CONVICTONS with harsh prison time for The Bush Mafia members will end the shame this country feels from these BARBARIC acts conducted IN OUR NAME!
June 1st, 2009 at 2:58 pmHow vile and grotesque can you get? America, the land of torture, treason and tyranny for eight long years under the Bush gangster regime, is now the land of two criminal imperial hostile military occupations of Afghanistan and Iraq under President Obama. And we have all the stupid video games to accompany an imperialism that is “too big to fail?”
O/T: fanatical anti-abortionists are armed and dangerous: sexual terrorists. Disarm the fanatical anti-abortion terrorists.

June 1st, 2009 at 3:11 pmStill no thoughts as to the Sanchez thread? You are beyound lame and weak. You are farcical which is why your poor excuse at parody falls so flat…
Those wierdos who thrive on GTA will love this one! I wonder how many points you get for flushing a Quran down the toilet.
June 1st, 2009 at 3:12 pmI already told you. I don’t bother with proffing as long as the intent is clear. Suck it up loser. I will still be here when you are gone. You are like a little child seeking negative attention. Do you feel proud of you lame ass cries for attention and disruption?
June 1st, 2009 at 3:12 pmThe eagerness of the capitalists in the United States to make a buck off anything (reality TV, anyone?) they can knows no bounds…and no modicum of good sense. Anyone who buys this game (and we know millions will–Americans LOVE the bloodthirsty killing machines), is aiding and abetting the terrorists and Osama Bin Laden in bringing down this country physically, morally and spiritually. Good job, Rethugs….your constant harping that Gitmo is a good thing no doubt has encouraged these idiots to make money off it. Or is the ringleader a powerbroker in the Rethuglican party?

June 1st, 2009 at 3:16 pmI am not attacking you. I am just pointing out that your gimic is tiresome and not believable. You come here seeking nothing more than to disrupt and get attention and I will point that out each and everytime till you grow up or go away. That is all. Even you can explain in a logical mannerly fashion what your purpose is. I will reconsider…

June 1st, 2009 at 3:18 pmGuantanamo Bay video game in development …
why not…? … it was video games that helped induce gung ho idjits to think they knew what war games were…
June 1st, 2009 at 3:19 pm…
This probably is the only way we will get the truth about torture.
June 1st, 2009 at 3:20 pmoh, that was total contemptuous sarcasm…
i abhor violent, especially gratuitously violent (and sexual) ANYthing.
June 1st, 2009 at 3:21 pmThis kind of reminds me of the whole Policy Analysis Market–betting on war and terrorist related events that was proposed several years ago.
June 1st, 2009 at 3:22 pmEgads — it’s getting so I can’t tell the parody trolls from the real ones. Does anybody have a cheat sheet?
June 1st, 2009 at 3:23 pmTorture is now a game? If the new game doesn’t end with BushCo being tried, convicted and sentenced, it’s a failure before it’s released.
Might be a good place to incorporate “whack a troll”, too.
PEACE
June 1st, 2009 at 3:25 pmMerdad reminds me a little of Glenn Beck, just without his charm and likeability….
June 1st, 2009 at 3:27 pmJune 1st, 2009 at 3:27 pm
Hmm- I don’t see it that way. Here is why: video games are a form of media, they are a form of communication. Gitmo has become part of our history, part of America’s heritage. I certainly don’t like that part, but its true.
And just like other moments of our heritage, WW2, Vietnam, “The 1960s”, Grunge music, Studio 54, and so on, it will be documented in media. What is interesting to me is that a video game will tackle it before film.
In full disclosure, I produce video games. Not anything like this, and I wouldn’t play this, but video games are certainly starting to cover as wide a ground as movies. You can bet that a movie about Gitmo will come out in given time. Guess the game came out first….
June 1st, 2009 at 3:30 pmMr. Merdad,
June 1st, 2009 at 3:31 pmThere was a phrase coined by people like you when I was young: ” America, love it or leave it.”
So kindly pack your bags and leave.
President Obama is in charge now and it’s time for you to catch your plane.
You’re running way late. Hurry up,now!
The word “Merda” means “Sh!t” in Portuguese and Italian! hee hee LOL! That’s so telling! Look it up!
June 1st, 2009 at 3:37 pmI’d rather play whack-a-mole with the heads of Cheney, Dubya, Condi, Rummy, etc.
June 1st, 2009 at 3:39 pm“depicts the prison in the near future — after its anticipated closing by the U.S. government — as a camp run by mercenaries who detain innocents sold off to their captors to serve as ‘lab rats’ in scientific experiments.”

June 1st, 2009 at 3:42 pmUNCANNY!
When TP posted links to those abu ghraib prison photos the other day I was thinking to myself. The last photo in the gallery looked too much like the last fps zombie shooter I played. The profusely bloody prisoner dragged out of the cell covered the walls and floors. Actually fairly horrifying to be forced to think about it. Maybe a game would enlighten broader audience to the situation.
June 1st, 2009 at 4:28 pmOH, and I see merdad is still here even though he ran out of facts days ago. Whats the matter, did the libs destroy your arguements so bad that you resort to 3rd grade name calling and hate mongering?

Tick Tock
June 1st, 2009 at 4:50 pmFor the first couple of sentences, it sounded really sick. But reading on that it is a future world with innocents abducted to be lab rats, it sounds like a lot of top-selling video games.
June 1st, 2009 at 5:01 pmA video game? I think this was done in poor taste. How the video game creator would want to capitalize off this horrible tradgedy is beyond me!?
June 1st, 2009 at 5:08 pmoldgranny – I’m with you. Merdad and the other trolls need to just get out of America. If you don’t like how we live, you’re welcomed to leave. Don’t try to force your wickedness on us. Since you love GW Bush so much why don’t you marry him!
June 1st, 2009 at 5:10 pmNow hang on a second. Go back and read #38 .
Video games, like the photograph, started off in bleak disposition compared to the more traditional media of the time. However, games convey emotion/art/philosophy just as well as movies/paintings/print. They are gaining validity as a proper story telling medium/artform, especially around the college campus. You shouldn’t immediately disregard something because it is in the form of a game. Stay open minded.
Also, take a look at the developer; This isn’t your megabux EAgames conglomerate. The game is set to release fall 09 and there are no action/in-game clips in the trailer yet (and is slightly crude). I don’t suspect that making a fortune off this is one of the creators’ primary motives.
June 1st, 2009 at 5:43 pmTo say that this is an outrage is an understatement.

June 2nd, 2009 at 1:30 amHey Sandoz….Gitmo has become part of our history, part of America’s heritage.
You cannot be serious! You mean like Dachau has become a part of German history? Somehow, I don’t think we want to enshrine the sadism and torture (still illegal) of Gitmo as a part of our heritage. I am just sick of the violence and killing that is fed to our kids through video games, and can’t believe this shameful episode in our “heritage” will be available to every eager, undiscerning kid who doesn’t have a clue what it was really all about….as Americans, we lost our collective soul when we allowed Gitmo to exist. I suppose that’s not such a big deal to you. Well, it is to me…it’s a sad day when I see such a dispicable part of our warmongering put on display to the world and for sale to all comers.

For all those naysayers who want to diss PRESIDENT Bush and his administration, shame on you! You should be GLAD that he did what he did! His actions have spared us a lot of trouble over those eight years instead of having to stave off waves of attacks. And now, under MISTER Obama, he’s let some of those bastards go and what happens? They go back into circulation to commit more acts of terror and destruction. Gee, what a great plan for national security he has!
Everybody thinks that Obama is a panacea. WRONG! One can always count on liberal Democraps to do the WRONG thing when they think they’re right. Just watch what happens after this year, we’re going to be in deep trouble for his inexperience and inability to have a real plan. At least Bush HAD A PLAN and put it to action!
If anything, criticism should be aimed at the game makers because this only smacks of money grubbing and profiteering. Do they think that this is funny? I guess they sympathize with the terrorists because who else would consort with their ilk? I guess they have an agenda to brainwash the teenagers and young adults into believing that it was wrong to detain those who are affiliated with terrorist organizations. That’s their other agenda – besides making a buck off of you leftist liberals!
Go move to the mideast if you don’t like it here in the US!
June 2nd, 2009 at 3:40 pmHey Kevin. I just saw the YouTube video about web 3.0 and I have had this idea about our future economy.

I’m a musician and I kinda have the feeling that in the future people will pay for live performances, because we have computer software that is very close to sounding like a musical instrument, with a modelled human touch. So, if a person that has never played the guitar, can click a button and sound like Jimi Hendrix, than what is the coolness about all this digital music really? Infact, I think that the more advanced this gets, the less interesting it becomes. We are still in awe over a youngster that can make the violin cry and we will definately be in even more awe when a person can actually do with their fingers that what we can do in an iPhone application.
