White Supremacist Group Posts Doctored Photo Of Sotomayor With KKK Hood
John Aravosis at AMERICAblog notes that the Council of Conservative Citizens — a group the Southern Poverty Law Center calls a “brazenly racist group” — has put up a doctored photo of Supreme Court nominee Judge Sonia Sotomayor. In the picture, Sotomayor is wearing a KKK-type hood. On her robe is a raised fist and the words “La Raza”:
The right wing has been outraged over the fact that Sotomayor is a member of the National Council of La Raza (NCLR), the nation’s largest Latino civil rights and advocacy organization. Last week, former Republican congressman Tom Tancredo made a similar smear against Sotomayor and the group, calling it a “a Latino KKK without the hoods or the nooses“:
If you belong to an organization called La Raza, in this case, which is, from my point of view anyway, nothing more than a Latino — it’s a counterpart — a Latino KKK without the hoods or the nooses. If you belong to something like that in a way that’s going to convince me and a lot of other people that it’s got nothing to do with race. Even though the logo of La Raza is “All for the race. Nothing for the rest.” What does that tell you?
“La Raza,” in fact, translates as “the people,” not “the race.” ThinkProgress also spoke to an NCLR spokesperson who confirmed that the logo in the CCC photo is not affiliated with the organization in any way.
CCC has been courted by prominent conservatives such as former Republican Senate Majority Leader Trent Lott, who has since renounced the organization. As Tom Edsall wrote in the Washington Post on Dec. 16, 1998:
The CCC, which has strong ties to the old white Citizens Councils, is considered racist by conservatives and liberals. Many of the most prominent figures in the organization are proponents of preserving the white race and culture, which they see as under assault by immigration, intermarriage and growing numbers of Hispanic Americans.
In the spring 1992 newsletter, provided by a Dallas man, Ed Sebasta, who has followed the organization’s activities, Lott is pictured speaking to the group with its banner in the background.
In his speech, Lott, according to the newsletter, called the Citizen Informer, warns against the forces supporting government spending: “We need more meetings like this across the nation” to offset these liberal pressures. “The people in this room stand for the right principles and the right philosophy. Let’s take it in the right direction and our children will be the beneficiaries.”
Last week, former KKK Grand Wizard David Duke also embraced the position that Sotomayor is racist, while claiming that he, on the other hand, has “consistently supported true equal rights.”

And we can argue about whether or not Biden is a racist, but his remark was a fairly common one at the time — Thomas replacing Marshall was about as laughable as the idea of Miers replacing O’Connor. Are you seriously suggesting that Thomas would have gotten the nod had he been white?
And as to your accusation of hypocrisy, there is actually a valid reason why some might consider Thomas a token while not considering Sotomayor to be. And that’s because Sotomayor’s qualifications are significantly greater than Thomas’s were when he was appointed — her bench experience far exceeds his, her legal career has more depth, and even her grades in school were higher than his. And yes — I believe that any white male with her experience would be a viable candidate for this job.

That’s OK — I wasn’t even the first to point out that quote was actually from Biden. Several others did before me — the earliest one was at #20, I believe.
The problem is that I’m at work, and often the need to do real work intrudes on my posting — usually in the middle of my composing. So by the time I hit “submit”, a gazillion people may have already said the same thing.

The kids play together. The folks bar-b-que and share the occasional beer. No disputes. No cops. It’s a really nice quiet neighborhood where people smile and wave or even stop to chat.
I think my experience tells a lot more about what’s good in American society than any prison story. But hey, if one really wants to live in a prison? It can be arranged.

Agreed. You make the point well. Underestimating their rage, their hate their and their guns is a mistake. That said, I remember a time when as a teenager, a dear friend of mine told me about bunch of infamous jack-booted Aryan thugs who came to recruit and march near his house. The Nationalist Socialist White Peoples Workers Party they called themselves back then. Covering all the bases I guess. Anyway, the story goes that people from all walks were ready and joined together and counter protested. They were just kids on bicycles mostly. But, there were a lot of kids or at least enough. They peacefully gathered opposite the loudest thug and began singing and shouting and making a suitable ruckus. It must have intimidated the lead thug, this band of teen-age bicyclists because I heard from a number of people there that he bolted and they ended up chasing his crew-cutted, white shirted skinny self under an old jacked up station wagon several yards away which by the way, true to the day, leaked oil.
Well, by know you can tell I am really old because I am telling stories but my point is – these jack-booted types are authority driven. Like bullies in the playground who fear they might just get a thick lip and black eye when you stand up for yourself. They respect power. Even non-violent power. It has to do with their habit of “projection” I think is the psychological term. If they do it, they think you might do it too and they are really cowards at heart. That’s why they have to carry such big weapons. Over compensating for what their “creator” failed to give them, if you get my drift.
Lastly, I would like to see us publicly stand together BEFORE anymore tragedy strikes, instead of as an outpouring of sympathy afterwords.

I’m a musician and I kinda have the feeling that in the future people will pay for live performances, because we have computer software that is very close to sounding like a musical instrument, with a modelled human touch. So, if a person that has never played the guitar, can click a button and sound like Jimi Hendrix, than what is the coolness about all this digital music really? Infact, I think that the more advanced this gets, the less interesting it becomes. We are still in awe over a youngster that can make the violin cry and we will definately be in even more awe when a person can actually do with their fingers that what we can do in an iPhone application.
