Last night on Fox News, former Pennsylvania Republican senator Rick Santorum jumped on a popular right-wing meme and criticized President Obama for taking his wife on a date to New York City for dinner and a Broadway show. Santorum said that Obama is a “role model…whether he likes it or not, in the African-American community.” He then told Obama to act like a role model and…take his wife “down to the corner bar and have a drink, a shot and a beer”:
And you have an African-American community, particularly in the poor inner city areas, we’re looking at out of wedlock birthrates in three quarters to 75 percent (sic) of children being born out of wedlock. Marriage is an institution that’s a bridge too far for too many African-American woman and is not desirable among African-American males.
Here we have a president of the United States who says that marriage is cool. You have respect for your wife, and you treat her with the respect and dignity that she deserves. And she is part of this team. And it’s not just part of professional team, but it’s also part of a personal, romantic team. I think that’s all great. So I think it’s important that he keeps having his date night. [...]
I think he has to realize that flying to New York is…self-indulgent. Go down to the corner bar and have a drink, a shot and a beer. It does not matter where you go with your wife, is that it’s with your wife.

As a born and raised New Yorker, I can tell you that’s a pretty common date. It’s just one notch above going to dinner and a movie. Even people who aren’t going on dates did that on a regular basis with a group of friends. Heck, we went to Broadway shows as kids on school trips!

But you’ve got to love Santorum’s logic. 1) Engage in a multi-year work-a-thon 2) ask your wife what she’d like as a symbolic thank-you for putting up with it 3) ignore what she asked for and 4) Drag her down to the local bar for a beer.
Either Mrs. Santorum enjoys knocking a few back with the boys at the bar or Ricky has a limited imagination. Or both, of course.

Gee, New York traffic. Outrageous.
At least it was a short trip going to NY, probably a 20-minute flight that didn’t use up as much jet fuel as say, going to Crawford TX. And NY traffic is always sucked up, presidential visit or not. Besides, I think it’s cool to have traffic sucked up for a good reason like the prez rather than some drunken slob who got into a collision on the GWB.

I also think there’s a secondary “who does he think he is, he’s an uppity one” racist veiled message.

June 3rd, 2009 at 2:30 pmRick Santorum has said some awful things, but this is really not so awful. Sure, it’s condescending, but saying that the Obamas have a model marriage is true. It is also arguable that their Date Nights should include activities that can be emulated by couples of modest means. I am kind of surprised that Santorum admitted that African-American families are more likely to be poorer, and that marriages among poor families are in more danger of failing. In a way, his underlying argument here is kind of progressive.

I’m a musician and I kinda have the feeling that in the future people will pay for live performances, because we have computer software that is very close to sounding like a musical instrument, with a modelled human touch. So, if a person that has never played the guitar, can click a button and sound like Jimi Hendrix, than what is the coolness about all this digital music really? Infact, I think that the more advanced this gets, the less interesting it becomes. We are still in awe over a youngster that can make the violin cry and we will definately be in even more awe when a person can actually do with their fingers that what we can do in an iPhone application.
