ThinkFast: June 2, 2009

ap070402012978

President Obama hit back at former Vice President Dick Cheney’s recent criticism yesterday, saying that “he…happens to be wrong.” “Last time, immediately after his speech, I think there was a fact-check on his speech that didn’t get a very good grade,” said Obama in an interview with NPR.

General Motors (GM) marked “the lowest point” in its 100-year history yesterday, filing for bankruptcy and announcing plans to close 14 plants and three warehouses. With the federal government now a majority shareholder, President Obama said that his goals are: “To get G.M. back on its feet, take a hands-off approach and get out quickly.” In response, GOP leaders that they will use the government takeover of GM as “ammunition in their bid to defeat congressional Democrats next year.”

President Obama reversed his decision to release detainee abuse photos “after Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al Maliki warned that Iraq would erupt into violence and that Iraqis would demand that U.S. troops withdraw from Iraq a year earlier than planned.” Maliki told Obama, “Baghdad will burn” if the photos are released, a U.S. military official told McClatchy.

Hours before he leaves for the Middle East and Europe, Obama will meet at the White House today with the Democrats on two Senate committees that are drafting health legislation. The White House is also releasing a report today that asserts that revamping America’s health care system “would increase the income of a typical family of four by $2,600 in 2020, and by $10,000 in 2030.”

Last week, the State Department “sent a cable to its embassies and consulates around the world notifying them that ‘they may invite representatives from the government of Iran‘ to their Independence Day celebrations,” which usually “feature hot dogs, red-white-and-blue bunting and some perfunctory remarks about the founding fathers.” Obama administration officials “characterized the move as another in a series of American overtures to Iran.”

Supreme Court nominee Sonia Sotomayor today will attempt to “woo key senators who will decide if she merits a seat on the Supreme Court” in a series of 10 meetings on the hill. She will lunch with “two boosters, her home state Sens. Kirsten Gillibrand and Chuck Schumer.”

Hate radio host Michael Savage has officially sued British Home Secretary Jacqui Smith for banning Savage from the UK for “fomenting hatred.” While Smith declared “herself ready for a fight,” the BBC is reporting today that Smith “is expected to stand down as home secretary in a reshuffle.”

Education Secretary Arne Duncan “wants to take school turnaround efforts nationwide on a scale never tried before,” aiming to close and reconstitute 250 schools next year. “Mr. Duncan controls $3 billion in the economic stimulus law that could go to school turnarounds, and the administration’s 2010 budget requests $1.5 billion more.”

And finally: NBC’s Brian Williams goes inside the White House. Watch the segments here.

    ____________________________________________________________

Which underscores how weak their ammunition really is. They don’t have any real ordnance so they have to jerry-rig whatever they can find.

All Democrats have to do to counter this is point out the facts:

    1. General Motors was going under for the third time, partly because of the poor economy, and partly because their leadership ran their boat aground on a reef (hubris is a lousy navigation tool).

    2. The only entity with enough money to rescue them was the U.S. government. President Obama would have much preferred a merger with another company to keep GM solvent, but that wasn’t happening.

    3. The alternative to bailing GM out with government money was to allow them to fail. Not only would this have put many more people out of work, but it would have crippled many other manufacturers and vendors who depend on GM for their business — creating another big negative blow to the economy.

    4. President Obama really doesn’t want to stay in the automotive business indefinitely. He’s really got more important things to do. He’s as anxious for GM to recover as anyone else.

But this isn’t going to stop the GOP from painting Obama as some sort of tyrannical dictator, grabbing control of as many American corporations as possible in order to put a stop to free enterprise and turn us into the Soviet Union. This will be their message, which the trolls are already obediently parroting on sites such as TP.

No Obama, if single payer was on the table NOW, Americian families could save between $5k to $10k almost instantaniously!!!!!! We are not buying the 10 years down the road story!!!!!!!

WE WANT A PUBLIC PLAN!!!!!! WITH NO DEDUCT, NO CO-PAYS JUST SINGLE PAYER !!!

  7. winddancer says:

My impression, in watching Cheney’s last speech, is that he is growing increasingly afraid that he will, indeed, be prosecuted. He blamed Tenet for the Iraq-911 link and Richard Clarke for 911 itself. How much longer before he blames Bush 100% for the torture and other “enhanced interrogation methods?” He appears genuinely frightened and increasingly stressed out. And his assertion that the Iraq war somehow saved lives is truly incredible. The man is committable; perhaps he’s going for an insanity verdict, when the time comes. And it WILL come.

    winddancer Says:

How much longer before he blames Bush 100% for the torture and other “enhanced interrogation methods?”

winddancer, Cheney is inching closer and closer to blaming Bush, but perhaps he fails to realize that the Bush family is far more powerful than the Cheneys. No doubt, Papa Bush is watching Dick closely, and counseling his son that his legacy will rest with who the public ultimately blames.

Dick better watch his back. Not that I care one bit.

    PEACE

Why are you so full of sh!t? One writer produces an unpleasant article and only hateful lying goons apply that broad brush to “progressives.”

  11. Wayne Ant Schneider says:

    From today’s NYT:

Minnesota Justices Are Skeptical in Senate Case

ST. PAUL — A lawyer for Norm Coleman, the Republican who is fighting a recount battle with Al Franken, a Democrat, for a Senate seat, faced sharply skeptical questioning on Monday from justices of the Minnesota Supreme Court in a crucial hearing on the case.

    . . .

Associate Justice Christopher J. Dietzen said Mr. Coleman’s argument that thousands of absentee ballots had been wrongfully excluded had “no concrete evidence to back it up.” He said, “In my experience, I’ve never seen an offer of proof like this.”

    . . .

But an election law expert who listened to the proceedings online said Mr. Franken had emerged a very likely winner. The expert, Richard L. Hasen, a professor at Loyola Law School in Los Angeles, said that while Mr. Coleman’s side might argue that the election had problems, “the position of the justices appears to be: ‘You need to do more than that. You need to show us that whatever problems there were likely affected the outcome of the election.’ And that’s a tough standard to meet.”

Mr. Hasen also said the Senate would have every right to seat Mr. Franken provisionally if he won the case, even if Gov. Tim Pawlenty, a Republican, did not sign a certificate of election.

    OBAMA NYC TRIP COST $250,000?

In another odd twist left unexamined by the media, the White House on Monday said it simply would not release the cost of President Obama’s weekend jaunt to New York City, where the First Couple had dinner and caught a Broadway show.

It was so much better when we had a president that had to hide out on his “ranch” in Texas because he couldn’t go out in public — only to scripted and carefully screened “town meetings.”

Here’s a bulletin to that rag, the Washington Times: the President of the United States is not a corporate executive and he’s not looking for a federal bailout of a failed corporation. And we’d like to keep the President safe from wingnut loons like the one who just killed a doctor IN CHURCH.

Yeah, they conveniently forget that Bush took more vacations than any President in recent history. And they conveniently ignore the fact that the economic crisis they accuse Obama of both adding to and abandoning because of this trip actually was caused by the previous administration. OMG, that’s it! Neocons aren’t evil or liars; they just have a medical condition–short-term memory loss!

Give it up, watchdog. The arguments you post are pure nonsense and not in the least bit persuasive. sorry, meant to say “as if the idea that “unions” are even a singular unified group with a singular common goal makes any sense, anyway”.

Unlike unions, whose goals are usually very narrowly tailored toward the employees they represent, ALL fetushugging jesusfreak organizations pretty much have a common goal…to make sure that women are forced to bring children into this world, no matter how harmful it might be, how much of a danger to the mothers life it might be, and no matter how damaged or malformed the child will be or how briefly and expensively it will live. Oh, and no matter whether the child is a product of rape or incest. EVERY single one of these screwball abortion groups have the same goal: to completely deprive women of control over thier own bodies in every and any circumstance. you find me ONE of these so called “pro-life” groups that advocates birth control and other methods of preventing preganancy other than abstinence. I’ll bet you can’t. its because you freaks share one scary, unthinking hive mind. or at least those of you who don’t have no ability to form a organization that doesnt meet the exact idealogy i described above.

to say that a meatpackers union and a truckers union have the exact same goals or to somehow equate the two simply because they have the label “unions” is absurd.

Stupid is what they are. Stupid is what they know. Stupid is what they do.

Let’s watch our resident example of Texas’ ignorance continue to lay a foundation for my position…

  77. SKdeAnt says:

Little known shrink and political hack Dr. Lyle Rossiter has released a new book entitled “The Liberal Mind: The Psychological Causes of Political Madness” that is designed to feed the red meat hunger of Right Wing ideologues at a time when the Conservative movement is on the ropes after seven years of incompetence and corruption under George W. Bush.

Most of its claims are not so subtle reversals of the conclusions reached by four distinguished scholars that were funded by the US Government in a study to discover the roots of conservatism. ….

At the time that this report came out conservatives were outraged and dismissed the whole thing as merely the opinion of the scientists involved. It is highly amusing now to watch conservatives fall all over themselves to tout Dr. Rossiter unscientific and undocumented political scree simply because it gives them comfort in the face of their impending humiliation at the polls come November.

Not a lot of info on the net about Watchdogs’ shrink yet, but this did pop up – I will keep looking. Probably a citation or two in the good doctor’s history. Repugs make lousy psychiatrists.

    Johnintexas Says:

50 . . . the Vice President didn’t “finally admit” to anything, so stop your lying and spin. Here is what he said (from the same article you linked to)

“George … did say and did testify that there was an ongoing relationship between al-Qaeda and Iraq, but no proof that Iraq was involved in 9-11.”

This was the Bush Administration’s position for many years following 9-11. It’s nothing new. It’s new to you because you obviously don’t bother to learn history.

There is absolute evidence that Saddam was involved with terrorists and terrorism. There is absolute evidence that he funneled funds towards many terrorist groups. There is absolute evidence that many terrorists and their supporters who were linked to Al Qaeda also dealt with Saddam.

But, the 9-11 operation was highly compartmentalized and very few knew about it. Saddam would have had no reason to know.

As I recall, Cheney went on MTP and lied about a connection between Mohammed Atta and Iraq. He said it was “pretty well confirmed.” It was not confirmed at all and was actually highly doubted by our intelligence agencies.

Yes, Saddam supported Hamas and Hezbollah suicide bombers by giving money to their families. But Hamas and Hezbollah were not al Qaeda, nor did either of them attack us on 9/11. Bush and Cheney tried to create a false link in people’s minds by constantly mentioning al Qaeda and Saddam in the same sentence. As Bu7sh said, they were “very careful not say Saddam had any connection to 9/11.” (Paraphrase of Bush’s own words.) But the fact that they were “very careful” means they knew people might interpret what they said as indicating some kind of link, which they would later deny saying. And they succeeded. Before the invasion, more than half the country thought Saddam had something to do with 9/11. They got this wrong impression from the things Bush and Cheney were publicly saying.

There was never any valid reason to invade Iraq and dispose of Saddam. No justifiable reason at all. None. Facts did not support invading, only the lie-based fear Bush and Cheney tried to spread across the country.

I’ve seen over the years how unlikely partners, Rep. William Jefferson and Sen. Rick Santorum, came together to push through payment increases for dialysis companies. Guess who contributed to their campaigns?

I watched the tax push regarding nonprofit/safety net hospitals. This is a longtime for-profit hospital lobby position. It’s hot again, thanks to Chuck Grassley & Gail Wilensky.

Obama’s White House Health Czar spent eight years as a for-profiteer with CCMP Capital. She had a role in two nonprofit community hospitals changing stripes. One is in New Jersey and the other Idaho.

Dispute any of these facts, please. Then you can call me dishonest.

Every reason they gave that was a justification for war turned out not to be true. Every reason they gave that turned out to be true was not a justification for war.

Nothing that was true about Saddam was justification for invading Iraq and removing him from office. Since we had no business going into Iraq in the first place, we have to leave as soon as practicable.

Read the CEA report. It claims funding that hasn’t passed. Solutions don’t match up well with identified problems. Guess who gets no mention in expanding coverage, large employers. They hire lots of no benefit contractors.

John, you are nothing but a chicken sht coward. Wipe the piss off the front of your pants and crawl back underneath your bed and wait for the rapture you fcking pussyass mutherfcker!!

  144. Luis Chapulin M says:

    Johnintexas Says:
From enhanced interrogation techniques we have now slid down the slope of banality to sexually torturing little children.

Coincidentally enough, it appears that the sexual torture of children did happen.

Let me set you straight . . . if I have a man in my custody who I believe has information that will help prevent an attack on a US city . . . if I can’t get his cooperation through interrogation then I will attempt to break his will in some other way. And if this means crushing the little testicles of his children . . . bring out the pliers.
And if he didn’t have any information after all? Will you do the honorable thing and shoot your brains out, or will you live on as a coward? After all, you had nothing but good intentions when you were crushing the little kid’s balls.

  145. Chocolate Jesus says:

Oh, and Texas toilet…what if we, say, get “bad intel”, like we did about saddam having wmd and we end up crushing the wrong childs testicles because say, we got someone’s name misspelled…let me guess…as long as mr “we know where saddams weapons are” thinks it “might” be the right child to sexually mutilate, thats good enough for you, right?

  146. EugeneDebs says:

    JohnnyA$$

My GOD you are ignorant you just SAY things and expect that to turn fantasy into fact let me help you out you insufferable moron 149

1 LIAR. The only thing anyone showed was MEETINGS. The CIA used to MEET with the KGB didnt mean they were taking long walks in the moonlight. The Senate intelligence comittee looked into this DIRECTLY and said there was NO EVIDENCE OF A COLLABORATIVE RELATIONSHIP and no other kind matters. That is a DIRECT refutation of your blather not to mention the 2002 NIE said DIRECTLY that they did not BELIEVE that Saddam would comit terrorism against the US NOR ALLOW any weapons they DID Have to be used FOR terrorism. Simple put you are a liar and a brainwashed fool.

2 LIAR. First it was the WMDs the WMDs they litter Iraq like so many cigarette butts the WMDs ok so there arent any WMDs 9/11 it is about 9/11 ok so he WASNT involved in 9/11 but al Queda he is working with al Queda they work together, ok so they ARENT Workign with al Queda give me a minute… Yeah we are going to FREE the Iraqis, at least the ones we kill even though they never ASKED us to free them. The given reasons changed like the tides and were all WRONG. The Bush administration were LIARS kind of like YOU are a liar.

3 My GOD you are stupid. So if a dictator is losing his grip, which there really wasnt any evidence that means WE have an obligation to INVADE so as to stop what again? Iran HAS a lot of power NOW in Iraq you are saying we invaded to stop THAT from happening? Did you drink a couple extra cups of STUPID today? Your agument is ludicrous on the FACE OF IT.

4 You rarely hear about it because it is LUNACY. You have to be brainwashed beyond BELIEF to repeat such idiocy. Saddam NEVER would have invaded Saudi Arabia. The entire country is like a church to Islam. No Modern Muslim leader would EVER invade Saudi Arabia it would unite the entire Muslim world against them. Bush Sr LIED when he said Saddam was massing troops on the Saudi border he was caugh red HANDED in the lie when a Florida newspaper bought satelite photographs OF the Saudi/Kuwaiti border. NO TROOPS. Then again you eat up ANY lie that says something you want to hear. My GOD you are stupid

5 So we invaded Iraq because we wanted to be in place to keep Iran in check a country that hasnt invaded anyone since the time of Xerxes? I can not believe how stupid and brainwashed you are. Do you REALLY think that makes sense? We kill a few hundred thousand and lose thousands of American troops to get them close to a country that has NEVER threatend us nor IS a threat? The Iranians are not Arabs. Racial politics is HUGE in the region which is why they take turns slaughtering the Kurds. Iran is as far as they are concerned surrounded by enemies. The Iraq/Iran war had its roots in racial discord. Read a book for Gods sake the screechmonkeys that do your thinking for you have you dancing around like an organ grinders monkey with NO CLUE what you are talking about.

6 This one is so stupid we have to take it apart bit by bit

Something else you rarely read about or hear discussed:
    <<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<

Like the other things you think are rarely discussed it is because they are fantasies that you were TOLD to believe and dont even make sense

By being in Iraq, we have totally isolated Syria from Iran and broken any hope of future Baathist Party unification.
    <<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<

The Baath party is not in power in Iran. The Baath party is secular quasi Socialist party they have NO real power in Iran.

Isolating Syria means Israel can pursue peace initiatives with Jordan and Turkey.
    <<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

What a moron you are. The Golan Heights are STILL occupied by Israel so thats all it can POSSIBLY be. John you are a moron and you just embarass yourself by showing just how little you know about what you are spewing and how insanely and utterly brainwashed you are.

  147. Chocolate Jesus says:

hey texas toilet, heres another hypo for you…what if the terrorist is a radical right wing christian, say, like a smarter timothy mcveigh, and OBAMA BELIVES the only way to get him to crack and save 100000 american lives is forcing him to watch 100 unwilling forced abortions of white american womens white fetuses? would you start scooping those babies brains out for obama tough guy?

  148. Bilbo Hussein Baggins says:

    watchdog Says:
Al Gore seems to have the same problem as Obama living what he preaches. Progressives are stupid dummy butts.

Thank you so much for demonstrating your intellectual gravitas.

  149. EugeneDebs says:

    I dropped another paragraphs

Isolating Syria means Israel can pursue peace initiatives with Jordan and Turkey.
    <<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<

This is insanely stupid. Israel has had a peace treaty and normalized relations with Jordan since the mid nineties and Turkey was the FIRST Muslim nation to recognize Israel in 1949 they have NEVER been at war nor close to it. They clash sometimes DIPLOMATICALLY over treatment of the Palestinians but thats about like saying WE need a peace treaty with France. You are so stupid and brainwashed I am embarassed for you since apparantly you are too stupid to know how stupid and brainwashed you are.

  150. Chocolate Jesus says:

Since TexasToilet stopped talking, does anyone care to speculate about whether he would be willing to perform forced abortions on white american women (lets say, the suriving female members of the branch davidians) if obama believed it would get a christian terrorist like timothy mcveigh to talk about a ticking time bomb worse than the one he set??

The cancervative mind. Yesterday he was preaching that life begins at conception and today he’s crushing testicles of small children.

I see Captain Condescension is still buzzing about, with his unsourced hooey.

It’s a short hop from victim to terrorist, when you’re a conservative. They literally have no remorse for any acts, even those they are contemplating.

  155. Chocolate Jesus says:

    >Let me set you straight .

First he wants to engage me then he wants to set me straight…he must be getting his marriage counseling advice from Ted Haggard. I gotta love it when the irrestitable force
of presidental power slams up against the immovable wall of fetal sancity. apparently a childs testicles are safe from republican pliers…so long at the child remains unborn…after that…watch out junior…..can someone tell me which constitutional amendment makes a distinction between forced abortion and sexual mutilation of children? because Texas TOilet seeemed downright excited about snipping juniors mountain oysters on a hunch it it MIGHT be helpful to national security, but he got awful quiet when the hypotethical methods of gleaning information became forced abortions.

  156. MapleStreet says:

Better question why are conservatives so STUPID?

  158. DNFP says:

    Contard,

You might begin someday to understand why nobody will ever take you seriously here, phucking deepsheet.

    I suggest you start TODAY.

  159. Chocolate Jesus says:

    >Playboy has pulled its hate-filled article from >a “Progressive” writer, Tommy Christopher.

Your right..certainly some random article in a PORNO MAG is something the liberal movement in general should have have to defend. Jesus dont you have any links to articles about prejudice against gay dogs that would be relevant to the discussion? As colbert said, if a woman marries a snake in india, homosexuals in america should definitely have to answer for it. I mean, one naughty rape slash fiction article in a dying, and frankly pretty lame porno mag is waaaay worse than the constant libelous vile and venom that comes from the mouths of “stop the babykiller” o-reilly , rush “f#ck the sp1cs and pass the oxy” limbaugh, and michelle “this sick kids parents are bumbs so I’ll give everyone their address” malkin,,,,christ on a stick the things you bring up are just inaner and inaner every day..

I guess you guys are just mad because someone that wasn’t a consevative said something offensive….

  161. Marie says:

Looks like we have gone from the idiotic, senseless posts by m….d to the hate-filled, racist posts by JiT.

Correction: The offensive article is by Guy Cimbalo, not Tommy Christopher as earlier reported.

But don’t let a little thing like jumping to a wrong conclusion stop you from pushing your bullshit meme, Conny.

  167. Tommy Christopher says:

What the F?!? You misidentify me and trash me through the whole thread, post 1 tiny correction, no apology, no deleting all of the other comments misidentifying me as the author of the Playboy piece, instead of THE OPPOSITE OF THAT?

Hey Kevin. I just saw the YouTube video about web 3.0 and I have had this idea about our future economy.
It’s a bit in tune with the Zeitgeist film. See, if all of our knowledge was shared, we couldn’t make money of it. Siki?
    porno
    Porno izle
    sex videolar?
I’m a musician and I kinda have the feeling that in the future people will pay for live performances, because we have computer software that is very close to sounding like a musical instrument, with a modelled human touch. So, if a person that has never played the guitar, can click a button and sound like Jimi Hendrix, than what is the coolness about all this digital music really? Infact, I think that the more advanced this gets, the less interesting it becomes. We are still in awe over a youngster that can make the violin cry and we will definately be in even more awe when a person can actually do with their fingers that what we can do in an iPhone application.
