Cheney on daughter Liz: ‘I’d love to see her run for office some day.’

For the last few weeks, Liz Cheney, daughter of the former vice president, has been an omnipresent force in the news. For example, she made 12 appearances in the 10 days between May 12 and May 22, prompting many to wonder whether she jumpstarting her own political career. In an interview with Fox News’s Greta Van Susteren that aired last night, Dick Cheney said he’d love to see his daughter follow in his footsteps:

VAN SUSTEREN: Think we’re going to see a lot of Liz Cheney in the next couple years? … It sounds like she’s getting involved in a lot lately.

CHENEY: Well, I would — you know, I’m, of course, a proud father, but I’d love to see her run for office some day. I think she’s got a lot to offer. And it’s been a great career for me. And if she has the interest, and I think she does, then I would like to see her to embark upon a career in politics.

Watch it:

Reacting to unnamed Republicans who are pushing Liz Cheney to run for office, Steve Benen wrote, “I can’t help but find all of this rather ridiculous. For one thing, Liz Cheney’s penchant for dishonesty rivals that of her father’s. For another, the ‘Cheney’ name is not exactly a strong political ‘brand’ right now.”

And what qualifications does she have to run for office? Just because her last name is Cheney does not make her qualified for anything other than a mouthpiece for her father.

Besides, this apple didn’t fall far from the tree. She is just as evil and vile as is her father.

The AEI was backing Palin in the last election but they didn’t have enough time to sufficiently school her in neocon ideology. They might just zero in on this blonde neocon in the next election. In many ways she may be perfect for them.

Are there genetic factors associated with psychotic disorder?

Some psychotic disorders, like Schizophrenia, tend to run in families. If someone has a psychotic disorder, it is quite likely that another member of his/her immediate or extended family also has had a psychotic disorder.

We have identified the Republican Gene.

We believe this gene can be found in most people who tell themselves there own lies so much they actually begin to believe them.

We know this gene exists in other humans besides Republicans.
But our studies have shown that this gene is very prevalent and has rabidly effected an entire cult or section of this country.

    The Republican base.

We will be releasing our report shortly. We are going to call for any Republican to be checked for this gene before they reproduce.

    In other words.

We are trying to stop the crazy from being passed on.

My guess is you have just disqualified yourself for ever running for office, John. Haven’t you ever heard of the “book by its cover” judgment?

Granted, some spiteful things get said here, but only one comment referred to Liz Cheney as a “cow”, and that was pretty indirect. But to have you assume that Liz Cheney is better than anyone by using mere appearances and not important qualities such as intelligence, demeanor, and decision-making skills…wow.

You’re pretty lucky that the Internet makes us all anonymous and invisible to a degree. Saying something like that in a public forum would pretty much cause a nasty fistfight.

Do you mind reserving your judgments until Sotomayor’s policies and decisions can be weighed?

  56. BrianFL says:

I’m smelling the stench of Cheney wheeling and dealing behind the scenes. Something tells me this PR tour he is on is actually being done to force Republicans to support his daughter for future office. Every Republican lawmaker/analyst (not the radio blowhards) I’ve seen quoted basically wishes Cheney would go away and feel he is damaging this attempted Republican makeover/re-branding.

Could this be a form of blackmail, forcing them to back his daughter or he will not shut up in the media?

Cheney has always done things for self-serving reasons, and not for any love of his Party or country. I have a feeling this PR tour is yet another example of that.

  57. misscoleopteramolly says:

It’s not surprising that Cheney would support any political plans his daughter might have — what would we expect him to say? That he thinks his darling daughter is a flaming incompetent and unfit for office? That’s a bit unrealistic.

I find more interest in the idea that “unnamed Republicans…are pushing Liz Cheney to run for office”. This tells me there are still Republicans out there who just don’t get it.

There are a couple of really bad ideas here — the first being getting a candidate elected on name recognition only. Name recognition might get one elected, but if the candidate doesn’t have the goods, it will do the party harm. Dubya should be regarded as a prime example.

And the second is the idea that anybody having the name “Bush” or “Cheney” right now would enhance the party — not when the GOP desperately needs to distance itself from the past eight years. Jeb Bush realizes that, and hopefully Liz Cheney will, too.

But if not, it just helps the Democrats.

  58. Xisithrus says:

Johnintexas Says: Her command of the facts [Bwahahaha] and facility in side-stepping stupid liberal word games makes her a natural.

Speaking of word games, did you note that Cheney has now said that there is not ties between Iraq and 911?

  59. BrianFL says:

By the way, if Liz Cheney does run for something, we need to pull all the anti Caroline Kennedy quotes from Republicans, who were saying we are not a monarchy, that she shouldn’t just get the job because of her family name, etc.

I’m sure they will be changing their tune if Liz runs for office.

  61. A Patriotic Anopheles Acting says:

JohninTexas that’s some funny shit! Who says Republicans can’t do comedy? Liz Cheney (thanks to the Dick) has held various positions in the State Department throughout the Bush Administration. Elizabeth Cheney also headed the Iran Syria Policy and Operations Group, her work with this group has been heavily criticized saying that the group was plotting covert actions that could escalate into war with Iran and Syria. After word of this made the press the group was quickly disbanded. This leach was intricately involved in classified State Dept. activities on behalf of the Republican Party. Liz Cheney undoubtedly had been briefed about the Bush/Cheney torture program, has steadfastedly defended the “enhanced techniques” in the press and should be charged with aiding and abetting war crimes as well as her covert attempts at fomenting a war between Iran and Syria while working for State (a department designed for diplomacy NOT inciting wars. This idiot has WAY too many skeletons in her closet to ever get elected to anything other than a local position in an overwhelmingly red state. All I can say is good luck with all that Liz. JinT says: “She represents all that is good about America and all that made America great.” I beg to differ fool. SHE REPRESENTS THE WORST TRAITOR AND BIGGEST WAR CRIMINAL THIS NATION HAS EVER HAD THE GRAVE MISFORTUNE TO SEE!

“Ms. Cheney has wiped up the floor with every gliberal who has tried to interview her.”
    – Really? Care to provide some examples?

“Her command of the facts and facility in side-stepping stupid liberal word games makes her a natural.”
    – I’ll admit she’s a bit better at memorizing her flashcards than Sarah Palin was. This really doesn’t make her a ‘natural’ at anything.

“She is pretty, bright, articulate, Christian and of white-European background . . . good solid English stock.”
    – While I admit that being bright and articulate are good things to be, I fail to see how being ‘pretty’ qualifies one for office (her father, for example, managed to get elected despite his looks). Your touting her race as some kind of positive atrtribute just speaks of blatant racism — are you suggesting that if she wasn’t of ‘good solid English stock’ that she’d be inferior in some way?

“She represents all that is good about America and all that made America great.”
    – I guess it depends on what you think ‘made America great’. Liz Cheney has so far made a name for herself by conducting smear campaigns and defending torture — neither one of which I believe makes America great.

“I chuckle when I compare her to that fat, greasy-haired, ugly, lesbian, racist Obongo just nominated for the Supreme Court.”
    – You’re really hung up on looks, aren’t you? But only when it comes to women, I guess. Making you a racist AND a misogynist. Not only is Sonia Sotomayor none of the things you claim her to be in that hateful sentence, but her qualifications and accomplishments run circles around those of Liz Cheney.

“You couldn’t have a better definition of the two Americas we have become if you tried.”
    – Finally, something we can agree on. Fortunately, the “America” that Cheney represents has become marginalized and is shrinking daily.
