It seems intuitive to be intolerant of the ideas of nazi’s or klansmen, but not appropriate to be intolerant of of most different cultures, religions or many political issues.

So, is the intolerance that many progressives show conservatives (and vice versa) an appropriate intolerance in the vein to be shown nazis and klansmen or is it a less appropriate intolerance of those with differing points of view; that can plausibly be chalked up to simple bigotry.

If bigotry includes the intolerance of the ideas of others, it is not the sole domain of conservatives.

But isn’t conservatism defined by its ideas? And thus if someone “hates conservatives,” what they hate must be that set of ideas, and/or its proponents. I maintain that they are all bad ideas, so much so that their implementation would destroy everything that America stands for – pretty strong words, enough so that I could equally be said to “hate conservatism” as well as those who would implement it, i.e. conservatives.

Conservatism may be a choice, but if you consider the definition:

The rigid intolerance of ideas or persons seen as different.

you can make the case that conservatives are people with ideas that rhf sees as different and intolerable. she may feel justified in her unwilliness to tolerate them, but that intolerance seems to fit the definition of bigotry.

Not applicable. Conservatism is a lifestyle choice. If you can scientifically prove that it’s really some kind of congenital disability, I might start showing them some “empathy.” Until then, I simply can’t condone anyone voting Republican or promoting the Republican agenda. At least not in public where my children might see them practicing their filth.

Actually the first point Obama brought up in introducing her was her qualifications and judicial record. The “empathy” thing is an afterthought.

Conservatism will make a “comeback” only when it learns to compromise. But all of its “leading voices” right now are still calling for getting even more hard-line, and retreating to a smaller base. Until it comes back from its self-created wilderness, it will continue to wander there.

At present, conservativs who don’t hold with the most extremist wing get vilified by it, and are often forced out of their positions – Chris Buckley ferinstance.
