Rep. Fred Upton: Waxman-Markey legislation is ‘hazardous waste.’

This morning the House Republican Conference released an over-produced video highlighting its recent series of “National Energy Summits,” which were billed as an opportunity to “discuss solutions to America’s energy challenges.” With a soaring soundtrack in the background, the video features a series of Republican House members reciting tired talking points aimed at tearing down the Waxman-Markey clean energy jobs bill recently approved by the House Energy committee. Rep. Fred Upton (R-MI) went so far as to characterize the legislation as “hazardous waste”:

UPTON: I might just add, I’m glad Steve brought a copy of the bill. I wanted to bring one but I was afraid Delta was going to charge me extra money for excess weight. And I knew I couldn’t take it in my carry on because they would view it as a hazardous waste and was going to be limited to three ounces.

Watch it (at 2:00):

Typo alert — “hazerdous waste” s/b “hazardous waste”

  2. AIO says:

If hazerdous waste, then shouldn’t the Rethugs like it?

  3. Gregor Samsa says:

Not to nitpick, but the headline should read “hazardous waste”

  4. misscoleopteramolly says:

And this is a typical Republican mindset — tired talking points can always be repackaged with a soaring soundtrack in the background.

Unfortunately for them, more Americans are insisting on improvements to the product, not the packaging.

And Upton apparently doesn’t have a clue as to what actual hazardous waste is or what harm it can do, or he wouldn’t mock it in that manner. Fortunately, I was brought up to be a decent person, and that prevents me from suggesting that somebody give him a personal demonstration.

DOH!! I wondered why my spell check alerted me; I figured ’surely TP wouldn’t be wrong in their spelling’.

  6. kdgamergirl says:

Looks like the GOP is fast becoming hazardous waste.

Well, maybe if you lost a few pounds ’round the waste, Mr. Upton, Delta wouldn’t have to charge you any extra for all excess weight.

As for the “hazardous waste”, what can I say? Global warming deniers and their bloviations are pretty close to being hazardous waste, if you ask me.

  8. Cats r Flyfishn says:

They failed to mention that drilling for natural gas pollutes the well water of nearby households.

These Republicans are the real hazardous waste.

  9. spencers mom says:

So glad to see the head-in-sand GNOP retaining its sense of humor despite approval ratings in the low teens and a rapidly shrinking “base”.

How proud St. Ronnie would be to see his party devolve into a ranting, racist snarkfest!

    PEACE

Here’s an interesting article about the bill:

Finally, Krugman’s strategic position on carbon legislation — “this bill is better than nothing” — is inconsistent with his own views of Obama’s “inadequate” stimulus bill and Geithner’s plans for revamping the banking sector. In short, if the world really is on the verge of catastrophe — which many alarmists tell us it is, and that’s why we need to take immediate action — then why are so many of these same activists supporting legislation that their own models show will do virtually nothing?

It’s a big step above humid weather that runs into November and Bojangles.

  12. Alejandro says:

Maybe I should have quoted the conclusion:

Whether you are a “denier” or whether you think carbon dioxide emissions need to be sharply reduced very quickly, you should be extremely skeptical of the process now unfolding in Washington. This isn’t about saving the planet; it’s about money and power.

  13. pastcaring says:

And still the world burns…when we die off in droves as a result, they will blame the gays for the disaster…

  14. Purple State says:

Yeah, notice how no one laughed at that “hazardous waste” comment, Mr. Upton? Didn’t make much sense to me either.

I mean, are we to say that hazardous waste can be brought onto flights if they are less than three ounces?

  15. katy says:

so, this is a repug ONLY coference…
a delightful circlejerk of ignorance, stupidity and greed…

i was wondering why no dems were up there challenging the idiocy…

somewhere, some time, SOON, they had seriously BETTER stand up…

  16. Megaloptera McWars says:

Hi Alejandro. I’m not sure it “isn’t about saving the planet”, but I do agree that all checks and balances should be in place to ensure that money and power don’t become entrenched in this vital cause. The congressman of concern here, waxman and markey, I’ve seen no evidence that they’re looking to grab power for the sake of grabbing power.

We’re talking about Washington, DC, here.

Music reminded me of a Disney soundtrack. Something with horses running through the woods.

  19. hormiga brava chavez says:

The spew coming out of Upton’s mouth is hazardous waste.
This is so typical of the GOPers. Any legislation that will improve the lives of Americans is always ripped to shreds by Repugnicans. I certainly haven’t heard any solutions to America’s energy crisis coming from these Repugnican bozos.

  20. ElBruce says:

Added Upton, “Guyk hyuk,” and then danced a little jig to some banjo music. Two other Republican Congressmen then suddenly popped up out of a corn field to introduce the next act.

  21. RantingTommy says:

it appears that his opinion comes complete with both “yee” and “haw”

  22. pete says:

Isn’t he the same guy who said building smaller, lighter, more efficient cars we would make it “impossible for Americans to afford a car“?

  23. ElBruce says:

Boss Hogg’s tryin’ to outlaw Springtime? Looks like the Duke boys are shore in a pickle now. Y’all stay tuned…

  24. David2Dogs says:

    ElBruce & RantingTommy

Great analogies, but thinking about republicans in general I go way back to:

Laurel and Hardy (Steele and Limbaugh) Hardy beating Laurel with his hat for mis-speaking.

    Republican Party = Keystone GOPs

Still working on the Three Stooges…..
