ThinkFast: June 3, 2009

Dick Cheney, The Angler

Vice President Cheney personally oversaw at least four secret briefings with senior members of Congress in 2005 in an effort to forcefully defend the Bush administration’s torture program. The briefings “came at some of the most critical moments for the program, as congressional oversight committees were threatening to investigate or even terminate the techniques.”

Former U.S. attorney Chris Christie won New Jersey’s Republican gubernatorial primary yesterday, beating back conservative Steve Lonegan with 55 percent of the vote. Christie will go on to face Democratic Gov. Jon Corzine in the general election.

Supreme Court nominee Sonia Sotomayor has been criticized as an “anti-gun radical” for a ruling in which she concluded that “the Second Amendment does not prevent state and local governments from restricting arms ownership.” Yesterday, however, “a panel of conservative luminaries on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 7th Circuit reached the same conclusion.”

Meeting with Senate Democrats yesterday, President Obama “affirmed his support for the creation of a government-sponsored health insurance plan,” which he said would “help control health costs.” Obama also said “that he is willing to consider taxing employer-sponsored health benefits to help pay for a broad expansion of coverage,” despite campaign rhetoric criticizing such a move.

Sen. Patrick Leahy (D-VT) has “offered a bill that would allow American citizens and legal immigrants to seek residency in the United States for their same-sex partners, just as spouses now petition for foreign-born husbands and wives.” Leahy said the bill — the Uniting American Families Act — “should be part of any broad immigration legislation that Congress considers.”

Lt. Gen. Stanley McChrystal, the commander of the war in Afghanistan, said yesterday that “violence and combat deaths will intensify as more U.S. troops surge into Taliban-held areas,” but added that his new strategy would put safeguarding Afghan civilians ahead of “killing insurgents.”

“A military investigation has concluded that American personnel made significant errors in carrying out some of the airstrikes in western Afghanistan on May 4 that killed dozens of Afghan civilians.” A senior American military official “said the civilian death toll would probably have been reduced if American air crews and forces on the ground had followed strict rules devised to prevent civilian casualties.”

Adm. Michael G. Mullen, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, said yesterday that the nation must do more for the mental health of American soldiers, warning that statistics show “there are going to be more [troop] suicides this year than last.” Mullen said that “the military lacks the number of mental health professionals necessary to help returning or soon-to-deploy troops deal with the high stress of war.”

And finally: Center for American Progress speechwriter Grant Ginder released his debut novel, This Is How It Starts. “Adultery, booze, gossip, name-dropping — it’s all just part of the game,” Roll Call writes of the book.

Obama also said “that he is willing to consider taxing employer-sponsored health benefits to help pay for a broad expansion of coverage,” despite campaign rhetoric criticizing such a move.

I don’t understand this at all. Because I’m fortunate enough to have good health coverage at work, I’m going to be taxed so that the government can pay private insurers to cover other people? First of all, that sucks, and second, there aren’t enough people with health benefits to cover all the millions of uninsured by taxing those benefits. It’s crazy talk.

  2. RantingTommy says:

The problem is not just people that are uninsured

It is people that have insurance that refuses to pay when claims are filed.

Insurance companies drive up the cost of health care. Remove them from the equation with single payer.

It will be the nation’s largest group policy and will be free of the overhead of private insurers.

You treat your soldiers coming back from war with the Army you have, not the Army you wish you had. Thanks for destroying our military, Donald Rumsfeld.

    Why are not prosecuting Cheney?

  7. Wayne Ant Schneider says:

From the WaPo article on the first item:

One senior intelligence official, speaking on the condition of anonymity, said the identities of individual briefers are intentionally concealed in all cases — their names do not appear in any of the CIA documents that describe congressional briefings. In at least some cases, he added, the identity of the briefer was never recorded in the agency’s internal records.

This practice has to stop immediately. The CIA must be required to keep records on who briefs members of Congress. Those records can remain classified, but they have to be kept. What if they a find a mole in their ranks? Wouldn’t they want to know if this mole gave sensitive, legally-mandated briefings to Congress?

If the CIA doesn’t even keep track of who they send to brief Congress, how can anyone say the CIA has never misled Congress? How can they say they trust them completely, when the CIA has proven that it can’t be trusted to tell Congress the truth?

  9. Zimzone says:

President Obama should ask the Saudis to take all Gitmo detainees, as long as he’s in Saudi Arabia.

Most of the 9/11 attackers were Saudis. Saudi Arabia has a ‘terrorist rehab program’ they’ve been using on those returned.
I don’t know what kind of success rate they’ve had, but it’s the least they could do in lieu of the fact S.A. has basically ‘ducked’ any responsibility for 9/11.

After all, even if you could escape, you’ve got a 1,000 miles of desert to cross before you get anywhere.

Come to think of it, Saudi Arabia would be a good place for Cheney to go. He could make nice with those detainees…I’m sure they harbor no ill feelings for the way the were treated.

I have what I would consider excellent coverage with my employer. It doesn’t change the fact that it’s still expensive even with coverage. There were many times I did not see a doctor for something I probably should have, just because the initial consultations could run into the hundreds, and that’s AFTER my insurance covers its part.

  11. spencers mom says:

The private insurers, both for-profit and non-profit (think the Blues) have what they call a “medical loss ratio” which is how much they actually have to pay for medical services rendered to their members versus premium income.

Think about it. They are insurers, and their goal is to keep profits high at the expense of paying for services. Even the so-called not-for-profits have huge profits that they funnel into lavish offices, high compensation for execs and bonus structures. The remaining “profits” go into advertising and market expansion. No taxes are paid.

No wonder they’re all quaking in their Italian leather boots at the thought of a government option.

    And your point is??????

  13. angels81 says:

CFP, what exactly is your point? Do you think Bin Laden cares who the President is? Do you think the enemys of America would just stop doing what they have been doing because of Obama? Do you live in the real world or what? Oh wait I get it, your just trying to bait people here.

  16. gummble-bee-itch says:

From CFP’s link. As usual, he left out quite a bit.

The Obama administration prepared the document to comply with a decade-old international agreement aimed at providing the International Atomic Energy Agency with a comprehensive picture of the country’s nuclear and nuclear-related activities. The U.S. made the agreement to encourage other countries to provide similar disclosure of their nuclear activities.

Some nuclear experts told the Times that any dangers from the disclosure were minimal, given that the general outlines of the most sensitive information were already known publicly. Others think this is like a treasure map for terrorists.

And which part did goonie choose to quote?

  17. Zimzone says:

    Good morning, campers

Last week, someone wrote in to the Port Huron Times Herald that we need Flush Limpdick, Hannity, Beck, and their ilk more than ever.
I responded that these talk radio yappers were fascist hatemongers.
Following that, another denounced me in the local paper as seeing things that were not there.
This morning, the paper’s editor called Limpdick and eye of Newt as racist hatemongers in their attacks on Obama’s SCOTUS nominee.

I call them as I see them, the local newspaper agrees.

Al-Qaida’s deputy leader on Tuesday criticized President Barack Obama’s upcoming speech to the Islamic world in Cairo, saying it will not change the “bloody messages” the U.S. military is sending Muslims in Iraq and Afghanistan. Al-Qaida has repeatedly lashed out at Obama since he was elected, a move some analysts believe indicates the terrorist organization is worried he will be effective in improving the U.S. image in the Muslim world.

Sen. Lieberman (I-CT) has submitted an amendment to the Supplemental Appropriations Act of 2009 (S. 2346) which would withhold any “photograph relating to the treatment of individuals engaged, captured, or detained after September 11, 2001, by the Armed Forces of the United States” if the Secretary of Defense certifies that the release of the photos could endanger citizens or the armed forces.

This incredibly broad statement could cover photos of all detainees captured in any future actions taken by the U.S. military. If passed, these government records which belong to the people would no longer be available under FOIA.

  81. Wayne Ant Schneider says:

But this is a different type of war we are fighting . . . a war where irregular forces attack our soldiers and melt into the countryside and population. In short . . . they’re not fighting by the rules and neither can we.

This, sir, is where I believe you are wrong. Wrong in your premise, and wrong in your approach. Just because a group claims it is “at war” with a country does not mean that the country has to accept the declaration and respond in kind. Lots of terrorist groups claim they are “at war” with the US. That doesn’t mean we have to send our military after them.

I think the right wing was wrong to think of the attacks of 9/11 as “acts of war”. They were crimes. Horrific crimes, yes, but crimes, not acts of war committed by a nation state. It was not necessary to send thousands of military people out after the perpetrators.

The vast majority of our successful efforts to stop the terrorists worldwide have come through the use of police work, not military force. I do not object to sending a small team of Navy SEALS (or some other “black ops” unit) in to an area to kill key terrorists, but I object strongly to sending in thousands of troops to fight an unwinnable war. (But I do not object so strongly that I would even consider the idea of killing a recruiter. Only a lunatic thinks that guns should be used to resolve differences of opinion.)

The problem this country faces is that the right wing (because they were in charge at the time) has successfully framed this as a “war” that has to be fought with our military forces, rather than correctly framing it as a “crime” that that has to be responded to with our police forces.

I post news, mostly under the ThinkFast thread, a news summary post.

If you are going to make accusations, you should substantiate them. Show me where I “want a pat on the back.”

  84. Fred says:

State, explain to me exactly why you are pushing for exposing these photo’s. Isn’t a description and acknowledgment of thier existance enough for now?

What can possibly be gained from putting these evil photo’s on display?

TP did an entire thread on this very topic. Where were you?

  85. stateofthedivision says:

What was gained from WWII trials over torture? What does the world get from a Holocaust museum?

The answers are legal justice, clarity of the law for the future and a reminder of man’s inhumanity to man, especially that ordered by the power of the state. Too many questions remain unanswered and the Obama team is less than forthcoming.

That leaves citizens doing their best to find the truth, using what rights we have. Lieberman-Graham diminishes that.

Israel started summary executions, the U.S. followed. Israel started capturing family members of suspected terrorists for leverage. Did the U.S. follow?

  86. stateofthedivision says:

While TP did posts on the detainee photos, none were on Congressional intrusion into the topic.

  87. Cats r Flyfishn says:

As someone that enjoys flyfishing, I find photos of Cheney standing in the stream with a fly rod in his hand offensive.

  88. Witch1 says:

Cats, I find it offensive to see him standing anywhere…Would much prefer seeing him sitting on a jail house bunk…..Blessings

  89. stateofthedivision says:

Microsoft Corp. Chief Executive Officer Steven Ballmer said the world’s largest software company would move some employees offshore if Congress enacts President Barack Obama’s plans to impose higher taxes on U.S. companies’ foreign profits.

“It makes U.S. jobs more expensive,” Ballmer said in an interview. “We’re better off taking lots of people and moving them out of the U.S. as opposed to keeping them inside the U.S.”

Microsoft joins private equity in threatening to export jobs if they have to pay more in taxes. How long before Congress caves?
