Sessions gets annoyed with child crying during a hearing: ‘Enough with the histrionics.’

Jeff SessionsYesterday, Sen. Pat Leahy (D-VT) held a hearing on the Uniting American Families Act, which would allow gay nationals to bring their foreign partners into the United States on the same basis as straight couples. Sen. Jeff Sessions (R-AL), the only Republican who bothered to show up, grew impatient during the testimony of Shirley Tan; she faces deportation back to the Philippines, though her partner of 23 years and her children are American citizens. The New Republic reports that Sessions mocked Tan’s child for crying:

[O]ne of Tan’s children started crying within seconds of the start of her testimony. … For most people, the sight of a 12-year-old boy in tears at the prospect of his mother being deported halfway around the world would invoke some sympathy. Unmoved, however, was Alabama Republican Jeff Sessions, ranking minority member of the Committee and the only Republican to bother to attend the hearing. At the sight of the weeping boy, according to a Senate staffer who was at the hearing, Sessions leaned towards one of his aides and sighed, “Enough with the histrionics.”

Watch the video here (though you cannot hear Sessions’ remark). Sessions opposes the bill because, he said, it would be “providing an additional avenue for abuse of the marriage preference for immigration into our country.” Perhaps he’s listening to his top aide, Brian Benczkowski, who compares gay marriage to pedophilia and bestiality.

  6. Arctic Ghetto says:

The idea of family from the republicans doesn’t include the their living in equality. Its not surprising Sessions got annoyed with the reality of a child. For right wingers the family is a talking point for lining the pockets of healthcare companies and high fructose corn syrup salesmen just to name a few. If the CEO of a petroleum company started crying Sessions would hop to with a hanky.

If you want to know just how screwy a place the Justice Department became, recall that Brian Benczkowski was Chief of Staff to AG Mukasey.

  9. Pennsylvanianne says:

It never ceases to amaze me that Republican men think nothing of forcing a woman to have a baby whether she wants to carry the fetus to term or not. But once that baby is actually born and grows older, these same men want nothing to do with that child. God forbid they should show — dare we say — empathy to the plight of a son in the process of losing his mother!

  10. wiley says:

From the TNR article linked to in the blog

Testifying was Shirley Tan, a Fillipino woman who has been with her American partner for 23 years. Together, they are raising twelve-year-old twin boys. She originally left the Phillipines after suffering a violent attack from a man who murdered her mother and sister (one of the reasons why Tan does not want to return to her native country, aside from the fact that her partner and children live in the U.S., is that the man who brutalized her has since been released from prison.) Tan was originally scheduled to be deported on April 3rd, but won a reprieve after Senator Diane Feinstein introduced a private bill allowing her to stay in the country temporarily.

There is video, too. The boy is tearing and wiping his eyes—that isn’t “histrionics” by any stretch.

Y’all sure like to throw around the word “criminal” a lot. I’ll leve his aunt’s immigration case up to the appropriate authorities. There is a public due process for such things. It is being followed.

I’m noticing a pattern with not only our trolls, but the right wing in general lately – you no longer believe in the rule of law whatsoever. If the outcome of a law is something you disagree with, you complain and whine that it was judged unfairly to you. However, you seem to be completely uninterested in what the law says as it stands.

The reason I find this so interesting is you always used to be the guys saying “follow the law to the letter.” You were the pronents of pure textual analysis without overthrowing the letter of the law to fit larger positions. Now that only seems to be the case when you’re happy with how that turns out. When you’re not, you don’t care at all about the due process and seem to treat everything as if it’s up for general referendum.

Now that you’ve turned over the moral authority on every other issue to the Left, you’re finally chucking adherence to the written law off of your sinking ship. Awesome, thanks! Keep the issues coming, guys. We’ll keep taking ‘em up.

It is wrong in every culture I’ve studied to walk up to a fellow citizen, who is not threatening you or anyone else, and kill them in cold blood. (If anyone can think of an exception, please inform me.)

On the other hand, there is a significant lack of consensus about fetuses. Medical, ethical, religious, scientific, cultural, racial, economic, political, and personal philosophies all fail to reach a consensus. However…?

People who claim to favor law and order defend those who break the law and murder those who have behaved legally and ethically.

    Here’s the question:

How can we convince half-way reasonable people to stop encouraging unreasonable people to kill innocent people?

  61. spencers mom says:

How can we convince half-way reasonable people to stop encouraging unreasonable people to kill innocent people?

Pete, how about arresting and trying them for either aiding and abetting, which, according to uscourts.gov, is defined as “To actively, knowingly, or intentionally assist another person in the commission or attempted commission of a crime” or for “incitement to murder.”

Both are crimes in the eyes of the law, and there is a case to be made if a lawyer is willing to take up the cause.

  62. hormiga brava chavez says:

    Hey Pete!

The problem is that the half-way reasonable people don’t want to recognize or admit that there are extremists/mentally unstable people among them. These half-way reasonable people are not concerned about inciting the crazies to violence. They will not own this problem.

They think their beliefs are “righteous.” Their “righteousness” has blinded them severely and people like Dr. Tiller are getting killed.

Sounds right to me. Those that incite the extremists are always individuals who are more interested in their own power than actually working to reach the stated goals of the group they lead. They are either motivated by ideology, like Osama, or greed and a need for attention, like O’Reilly.

I would be surprised if any babies are aborted in the third trimester unless the only other alternative is the death of both mother and child. Even if there are women who would do such thing for convenience, I would think the lack of availability would make it logisticly nearly impossible. Do you know if any reliable statistics are kept of this, and where I might find them?

Single-payer health care. That means nobody’s uninsured for neonatal, which means the kinds of medical problems that cause many people to get abortions can be detected earlier, perhaps prevented.

Whaddaya say, wingnuts? Do you believe in preventing abortions enough to let us have universal health care?

Obviously, we all comment on blogs. That’s one. I also email my Representatives and Senator (Curse you Norm Coleman!) and occasionally I take local media outlets to task. I encourage others to do the same and was wondering what other ideas we can come up with in a similar vein.

SALT LAKE CITY – Federal prosecutors have charged a man with making threats against President Barack Obama after he allegedly told a bank employee in Utah he was on a mission to kill the president.

The Salt Lake Tribune reported on its Web site Thursday that Daniel James Murray allegedly made the remark to a teller at a bank in St. George on May 27 as he withdrew $13,000 from an account.

Murray’s whereabouts are unknown. A court affidavit says Murray is from New York and has recently been in California, Utah, Georgia, Oklahoma and possibly Texas.

The U.S. Secret Service says Murray has at least eight registered firearms, the Tribune reported.

Malcolm Wiley, a spokesman for the Secret Service in Washington, told The Associated Press he had no comment Thursday.

That’s an excellent idea because, this is life or death for the doctors and staff and the women that must have an abortion. The authorities need to be held accoutable as well. If they do not respond on a timely basis and arrest repeat offenders immediately, then they need to face suspension/arrest.

They shot a doctor and killed him with their little Jack Ruby impersonator just the other day, and now they’re pushing for the President. All they have to do is fuel enough hatred that enough right wingnuts come out of the closet.

And the right wing trolls and nuts in here laugh and mock about it too. One was just in here the other night saying it.

    This is not good.

    This is NOT good.

You know what might prevent some late-term abortions?
Single-payer health care. That means nobody’s uninsured for neonatal, which means the kinds of medical problems that cause many people to get abortions can be detected earlier, perhaps prevented.

Or if detected, a woman would never have to abort because she could not care for the child with the defect. It’s a very different choice if you can deliver a child with a shot at a decent life than it is if you’ve got to sell your family’s home to pay for treatment.

Though I think outlawing protest groups is going too far, I appreciate what you mean. I was actually asking about what we can do personally to pressure the right people about spreading stupid, violent, messages to stupid, violent,
    people.

    Pete,

I don’t want to outlaw abortion protest groups, just move them AWAY from the clinics and not allow the identity of the doctors or the clinics to be released to the public.

Pro-life groups refuse to accept responsibility for the actions of the mentally unstable in their groups who kill.

These killings, bombings, harrassments, stalking, etc. by pro-life extremists has been ongoing for decades. It’s time to do something different.

  84. Leftside Annie says:

The towering hypocrisy of these fascist Repukes make me sick; they all claim that they’re “pro-LIFE”…but these terrorists aren’t pro-LIFE.

    They’re pro-BIRTH.

After the baby is born, they don’t give a dam about it. If they were truly pro-LIFE, they’d care about babies being born to abusive parents, or babies who suffer because their parents can’t afford medical care – even die of simple fevers, or end up brain-damaged.

They don’t care about those babies once they go to school and sit in rotting classrooms with tattered textbooks and sit through classes hungry because their parents couldn’t afford to feed them.

They manage to find in themselves a bit of caring for these babies – once they’re old enough to join the military and go off and fight and die in their ‘war on terra.’

But when those babies come home, missing eyes and limbs and parts of their brains, they don’t give a damn. Or when those babies who served their country so well come home as veterans and end up homeless, sleeping under bridges or in tunnels, durg addicted and/or suffering from PTSD, they simply don’t care.

The only other time they care about those babies is if one of those babies murders someone – *then* they care; oh, yes! They demand that that baby be put to death by the State, or that it rot in prison with all the other filthy criminal babies who grew up neglected and abused, who dropped out of their rotting schools, who lived on the streets, who sold drugs because they couldn’t find any other job…who then become pregnant teenagers to start the pro-BIRTH cycle all over again.

    Sad, isn’t it?

  85. OutstandingInAPlagueOfLocusts says:

    Leftside Annie Says:

Yes, I’d say you summed up the whole “pro-life” hypocrisy pretty neatly. I’ve always felt they care about mother and baby til the day they leave the hospital. After that the pair could leap off a cliff for all the facists care.

That’s the bizarre thing. The only consistent principle across nearly all of their social positions is that everybody should have as many babies as possible. Abstinence-only “education?” Check. Restricting access to contraception? Check. No health care? Check. No gay marriage? Check.

The “culture of life” is really just a “culture of maximal population growth.”

I can’t imagine why this would be, as none of the primary religious texts they cite emphasize such a principle. Sure, it’s in there – “go forth and multiply” and all that – but it’s generally not considered a critical moral tenet.

Wikipedia has a few more fascinating tidbits about Sessions…

Sessions had unsuccessfully prosecuted three civil rights workers (including Albert Turner, a former aide to Martin Luther King, Jr), on a case of election fraud for the 1984 election. Sessions spent hours interrogating black voters in predominantly black counties, finding 14 allegedly tampered ballots out of approximately 1.7 million ballots cast. The three civil rights workers were acquitted after four hours of jury deliberation.

On September 9, 2005, after Hurricane Katrina hit the Gulf Coast, Sessions called his former law professor, Harold Apolinsky, co-author of Sessions’ legislation repealing the federal estate tax, which had lost momentum in Congress, and left a voicemail: “[Arizona Sen.] Jon Kyl and I were talking about the estate tax. If we knew anybody that owned a business that lost life in the storm, that would be something we could push back with.”

Sessions has been opposed to parts of the Voting Rights Act, which he described as a “piece of intrusive legislation.” In 2006 he was in favor of letting it expire, and also said that Congress should consider if it was needed in some northern cities and states.

Sessions has been one of the most vocal critics of the reauthorization of PEPFAR in 2008. On July 14, when the bill went to debate, Sessions prepared an amendment that would allow the so-called “Helms Amendment” banning HIV-positive patients from entering the United States to be maintained, a ban that the bill would repeal.

    Good stuff, good stuff.

    Oustanding. I agree with this.

Or if detected, a woman would never have to abort because she could not care for the child with the defect.

But just want to make one point about Down’s Syndrome and late-term abortion, because people are thinking that women are aborting the kids you see in the Special Olympics. Those kids are the very lucky ones. Most Down’s Syndrome babies die in their first year from heart defects, and if I remember correctly kidney problems, calcification of the brain, etc.—things that can be detected in utero.

It’s unlikely that a Down’s Syndrome baby whose life would depend on a transplant to survive would receive one. But the state might require the parents to allow all other life saving measures possible, though eventual death would be certain, because they’re doctors. All the options are horrible in this situation, and many parents, sincerely do not want an infant to suffer. The parents have nothing to gain and a lot to use. Many of them have children at home that need attention and resources.

Sooooo, what I’m saying is that doctors and patients aren’t discovering that a fetus has a gene that will make them mentally retarded, and destroying the fetus for being imperfect.

The U.S. ranks below every country with universal healthcare including *gasp* Cuba.

Also noteworthy is that the number of abortions rose during the Bush years, after having declined under Clinton. With no real sex ed, no funding for birth control and millions losing healthcare, it comes as no surprise.

  112. barfly says:

And the torture chickens come home to roost:

A judge in Niagra County, New York, ruled Thursday that DNA evidence, obtained only after police applied a Taser to a suspect who refused to provide evidence against himself, may be used by the prosecution because the electric shock was not administered with malice.

Judge Sara Sheldon Sperrazza, with this 17-page decision, becomes “the first judge in western civilization to say you can use a Taser to enforce a court order,” defense attorney Patrick Balkin said, according to The Niagara Gazette.

“Note that if Smith is guilty, he’s a pretty bad guy,” interjected The Buffalo News. “He’s charged with shooting a man in the groin after invading his ex-girlfriend’s home, tying up her two children and forcing her to take her to the home of the man he shot. He’s also charged with the shotgun-point robbery of a Niagara Falls gas station. DNA was found at both crime scenes.”

Smith, according to reports, had previously agreed to a court order for a DNA sample. But when authorities accidentally spoiled the sample, forcing them to return to the judge for a second order Sperrazza issued it without consulting the defense counsel, thinking the defendant would not mind.

“Smith did object, reportedly telling officers, ‘I ain’t giving it up. You’re going to have to tase me,’” added Buffalo News.

“Which they did, after consulting with a prosecutor, who either told them to use ‘the minimum force necessary’ (according to police testimony at last month’s court hearing) or ‘any means necessary’ (according to a police report written the day of the incident).”

After tasing Smith, a DNA swab was taken without consent.

The acceptance of torture as a valid method to gain compliance, has led to this. It is now a hammer in the State’s hands, and anything can be made to look like a nail. This second DNA sampling also violated the spirit, if not the letter, of double jeopardy, in that he had already previously willingly submitted to their demands. The judge was taking the state’s side of the case, by ignoring that fact, I think.

Yes the guy was a horrible person, and the description of the case leads one to envision the guy terrorizing his victims. But this is still America, and we’re already on the slippery slope of unintended consequences, by not prosecuting those responsible for enabling this practice, and in so doing, enabling it to be imported for use in strictly criminal cases inside the US.
