Over the past few months, improving their web presence has become a hot topic for conservatives. At a debate earlier this year, candidates for the chairmanship of the RNC boasted about the number of followers they had on Twitter and friends on Facebook. Yesterday, in an interview at the Conservative Heartland Leadership Council in St. Paul, former Minnesota Republican senator Norm Coleman inadvertently highlighted the “tech gap” between conservatives and progressives when he encouraged conservatives to compete with progressives on the “ethernet“:
“In the end, we need to compete, as I’ve said before, we need to compete in each and every kind of forum,” said Coleman. “And whether it’s on the ground traditionally, or today it’s in — it’s in the ethernet. It’s in the — you know, it’s online. It’s in the blogs, it’s Twitter, it’s Facebook, and the next iteration.”

June 5th, 2009 at 3:10 pmWhat a dope.
June 5th, 2009 at 3:10 pmWhen is this guy going to stop trying to steal his former Senate seat? And who is paying his legal bills for his court fight?
June 5th, 2009 at 3:11 pmOh, BTW could you send some trolls that use actual facts and that can debate instead of the usual finger pointers who parrot the AM drug addict, thx.
June 5th, 2009 at 3:11 pmi’m all for ether nets.
you’ve been captured, but your blissfully unaware…..
June 5th, 2009 at 3:12 pmIt’s inside a series of tubes? I hadn’t heard about those inner nets before…
June 5th, 2009 at 3:13 pmHey–this guy left honor back a long time ago by not conceding his Senate race…but this post by TP is just petty.
June 5th, 2009 at 3:14 pmThese people are like zombies…they. just. keep. coming. back.

Our State Supreme Court heard the arguments Monday. Coleman’s lawyers were sharply questioned about the ‘equal protection’ argument by the Court.
Most law experts agree that ‘The Norm’ has about as much chance of winning this case as the MN Vikings have of winning a Super Bowl.
OTOH, our lame duck Governor stated he would sign an election certificate if the Court requests such.
Even if Puuuhlenty didn’t sign it, the US Senate would still most likely seat Franken.
Ironic, isn’t it? With all the clowns in the Party of No, we may get a REAL comedian, after all.
June 5th, 2009 at 3:19 pmI agree. But petty can be fun.
BTW, Norm has got to be proud of the efforts of Troll Central in catapulting the Republican message.
June 5th, 2009 at 3:21 pmSo it’s petty to show just how out of touch these people really are? I think everyone should know that about them when considering them for decision making positions in government.
June 5th, 2009 at 3:21 pmAn ether net is how he trapped Mrs. Coleman.
June 5th, 2009 at 3:25 pmNo he’s not. He should know what he’s talking about before he opens his mouth, just like you.

The Re=Thugs should pay his legal bills. He only pushed so hard and so long at their behest.
June 5th, 2009 at 3:26 pm*
What’s the problem? I connect to the Internet using an ethernet card. They’ll never beat us on firewire though! And the DNC totally pwnzrs the GOP on the USB.

the National Republican Senatorial Committee has committed $750,000 to help Coleman pay his legal bills.
You’d think if they believe there’s a strategic interest in stalling Franken, they might want to exploit it while the window’s still open. If Franken gets there and they haven’t filibustered anything by then, then they just blew $750K on nothing.
Of course they’re idiots, so that’s par for the course. But still…
June 5th, 2009 at 3:28 pmWow – Republicans are not going to compete on Wireless Networks! Cool!

Look at the things that were said about Gore or Kerry during their campaigns, if you want to talk about petty.
This fits a pattern of Republicans being technologically clueless. And the irony of the story is that he’s talking about changing that while simultaneously doing it. Irony is fun.
Not every post on TP is a heavy hitter laden with gravitas. Some of them are just “look at what that dumb R said.”
But in bringing up Coleman there’s a good launching pad for a discussion on a great number of serious current topics.
Say, has anyone heard an ETA on when this Coleman/Franken thing is going to wrap up anyways? Last I heard, Coleman lost the appeal, and then… nothing.

June 5th, 2009 at 3:34 pmIsn’t he concerned that if they start competing on the Ethernets they might use it all up?
June 5th, 2009 at 3:37 pmEthernet? Actually, it is not a bad description of the internet, since ether is a very ancient word that used to describe the atmosphere, and its unknown qualities and net is net.
O/T: Murdering Muslims in Pakistan: President Obama is reaching out with his drones and missile strikes to kill Pakistanis.
June 5th, 2009 at 3:38 pmSo was Ted Stevens. Technically speaking, the internet is not a dumptruck.
There’s a huge difference between accidentally being ‘technically correct’ and actually knowing what you’re talking about.

(That by the way is my favorite part of the Stevens meltdown. Some Aide TOTALLY got busted on lying to the luddite boss about how internets work and when he sent an email. [or at least, that's the story i like to think happened])

June 5th, 2009 at 4:02 pmIt’s too late. They’re so far behind the curve, there ain’t no way they can catch up. They have a hard time being proved wrong. Yes, they will try. Let the fun begin.

Good question.
A local Norwegian here in MN actually dug down to about 30 feet to determine when the first copper wire was laid up here.
Finding nothing, he calculated that MN went wireless nearly 300 years ago!
June 5th, 2009 at 4:05 pmthe internet is for people who are interested in ideas and other people, its for inquisitive, knowledge-hungry people – all traits that are anathema to republicans/conservatives. So don’t be looking for an explosion of wingnut presence on the internet anytime soon. Now if you could kill people over the internet, republicans/conservatives would be overwhelming the internet.

June 5th, 2009 at 4:35 pmColeman is right this time.

June 5th, 2009 at 4:37 pmAn, here’s our oxymoronic friend to once again equate ratings with quality, truth or effectiveness…
Actually, I’m not even sure what point C4Pee is trying to make…
Is he taking issue with the article’s main point, saying that because Drudge and Faux News are on the web that conservatives are NOT falling behind in technological prowess?
Is C4Pee insinuating that Drudge’s snappy web design demonstrates the tech savvy that is going to lead the G-NO-P to the new media promised land?
Is C4Pee trying to claim that since TP only ranks #13,581 on the net (of course, we’ll have to take C4Pee’s word for that, since he provided links to Drudge and Faux News but not to backup his statistical claim) that the thrust of the article — Norm Coleman’s concern for the Right’s presence on wired local area networks — is absurd?
Or is C4Pee simply struggling to find something relevant to say, knowing he is charged with defending the Right and catapulting the propaganda but finding himself utterly out of large boulders or even very small rocks to use as ammunition?
My guess is it’s the last.

FreeRepublic too
I’ve been building web sites since before there was a DNS (you had to look up IP addresses in the “Internet Yellow Pages”
Drudge’s site is one step beyond the basic HTML sites we used to make before you could even control the color of the background, the text, or the links
June 5th, 2009 at 4:41 pmdrudge and fox appeal to the lowest common denominator and CFP thinks that is a plus
June 5th, 2009 at 4:42 pmSince Obama won, these people have been saying the stupidest things. I can’t believe they are really that stupid! It’s scary because they are running this country. June 5th, 2009 at 5:29 pmLooks like Drudge Report would not pass the wc3 validator. No Doc Type or CSS for Matt. What a messy pile of bad old days depreciated HTML. Even a hack like Jakob Nielsen would be appalled by the site.
June 5th, 2009 at 5:35 pmMaybe he meant infernet. Or hairnet. Or fishnet. He is not the brightest light in the party. Actually none of the Republicans are the brightest lights. Dim bulbs.
If they are going to compete and be tech savvy, they must find out what the difference is between all the nets. And who is paying the legal bills of this yahoo? The GOP probably. What is it now seven months? Christ on a crutch!!! When are the people of that state going to rise up and say go already Mr.Coleman?
June 5th, 2009 at 6:16 pmOmigod- Coleman really is as stupid & pig-headed as he seems.

It is my ability to see through the haze that causes my disdain for Republicans.
That one time Obama misspoke, I believe he said 58 states, not 57. But that was clearly just a slip of the tongue.
I had to run to the Googles to find out what this “Austrian language” thing was you’re on about.
It was also interesting to see that political interaction in Europe is not that different from the United States Senate. There’s a lot of — I don’t know what the term is in Austrian — wheeling and dealing — and, you know, people are pursuing their interests, and everybody has their own particular issues and their own particular politics.
So he was looking for the most common Austrian phrase for “wheeling and dealing” – you’ll notice that even in American it’s a colloquial phrase, not a word.
Frankly, we’re in pretty good shape if this is the best you can come up with to criticize him.

June 5th, 2009 at 8:56 pmThe difference is that Republicans work during the day and don’t have time to be on the internet as much as Democrats.
Democrats are largely unemployed and unemployable. Democrats don’t have much to do with their daily 24 hours except to spend time on the internet.
June 5th, 2009 at 9:03 pmWhile I see some have corrected this allow me to put my two cents worth in.
He’s not correct. Not even close.
A local area network is not the internet. A local area network is geographically isolated, usually to a building or as in some applications, the “Campus network” (i.e buildings as in a office complex or University). Ethernet, (i.e. Cat 3, 5 or 6 is the norm) is for these sort of networks and is not what traverses over a “WAN” (Wide Area Network).
Circuit Technologies that make this up can include some forms of Ethernet data packets traversing Wide Area links (Like LANE, MPLS etc) but it’s not Ethernet in the traditional sense and it by no means comprises the Internet. Most circuits are Fiber, (OC3, OC12, OC48 all the way up to OC3072) for the backbone and “Hi-Caps” or “T-1 and T-3″ technologies over here in North America and E-1 and E-3 in Europe, ISDN (mostly PRI), and all the millions of connections up to the Demarc (where the telco meets the client) including Cable, ISDN(BRI), DSL, SDLS, ADSL, POTS (Twisted Pair Copper), Wireless\Satellite to name a few.
So calling the Internet the Ethernet is a misnomer and is similar to Ted Stevens misnomer when he called the Internet a “series of tubes”, which likewise was “close” but no cigar. The term Stevens was looking for was “Pipes”, which is a term used by core level engineers to describe a data trunk or circuit.
Clearly someones briefing these guys to try to make them sound tech savvy but it’s just not working. Either you are tech savvy or you hire someone who is to speak about it for you.
Stuff like this is why I always get nervous when Congress starts talking about regulating the Internet.
June 5th, 2009 at 9:19 pmAnd technically speaking, Ethernet isn’t really the wire, which is clearly what he was trying to say. It is the protocol that manages communication for the data packets traversing the wire. This was another “DOH” moment for the non tech savvy trying to sound tech savvy.
June 5th, 2009 at 9:24 pm#
Apparently republicans (like you at least) aren’t aware that the Internet is the source of employment for literally millions of engineers, programmers, technicians, analysts, etc.
In fact, if it weren’t for all the people employed on the internet, and the internet itself, you wouldn’t be here posting your ignorant comments like this one.
:)

Plus, you don’t know a damn thing about us. That’s a big part of why you’re losing so damn hard. Do we sound like unemployable people to you? Really?
Internet usage is more efficient for information delivery than television, radio or print. It doesn’t take us more time to gather information here, it takes considerably less. That’s why we’re here. We have things to do.

Allegedly Norm Coleman has quietly told people close to him that if the Minnesota Supreme Court rules against him in the never ending Minnesota senate race recount fiascal, he would not bring his case to the US Supreme Court.
Some news to report:
This could mean that Norm Coleman is trying to appear somewhat gracious as the loser because he may have his eye on the Minnesota Governors race in 2010. Hey Norm, don’t go away mad, just go the phuck away!
