Rove: ‘Who Cares’ Whether Muslims ‘Approve Or Like The President Of The United States’?

Last night, Karl Rove went on Fox News and lambasted President Obama’s speech in Cairo, saying that he would give him a grade of “D minus” on the “important parts of the speech.” Host Bill O’Reilly then decided to play “devil’s advocate” and pointed out that President Bush’s approach wasn’t all that great since Muslim communities around the world “hated him.” Rove responded that it doesn’t really matter what they think:

O’REILLY: Okay? The bottom line on it is that President Bush may have been right in a lot of the things that he said and did during the war on terror in his administration. But the Muslim world would not listen to him. They wouldn’t. They didn’t like him. They hated him. He was demonized. And they didn’t like him at all.

ROVE: No, I totally disagree with you.

O’REILLY: The Muslim world –

ROVE: Totally disagree with you.

O’REILLY: — the Muslim people. They didn’t like him.

ROVE: Well, no, no. Look, I disagree with you.

O’REILLY: Well, all the polls showed in every Muslim country that President Bush’s approval rating was 20 percent. So I mean how can you disagree?

ROVE: You know what? Who cares about whether or not they approve or like the president of the United States? The question is do they respect the policies of the United States government? And you bet they did. Because we showed strength and power and influence.

Watch it:

Not only did many Muslim countries not “like” President Bush, they also didn’t respect his policies. A 2006 poll of five Muslim nations found that just 8-16 percent of those surveyed believed that “the ouster of Iraqi President Saddam Hussein made the world a safer place.”

In fact, the reason that so many Muslim communities didn’t approve of Bush was because of his policies. The United States may have had “strength and power and influence,” but under the Bush administration, it used it to “weaken and divide the Islamic world,” according to a 2007 poll of four majority Muslim nations. The abuse of this power is what led to “widespread…unfavorable attitudes” of the United States by Muslim nations throughout Bush’s two terms.

Not that Rove ever cared what they thought anyway.

Transcript:

ROVE: I’d give him sort of on the opening one sort of a B minus or maybe a B. But on the important parts of the speech, that is to say understanding the nature of the U.S. relationship with the Middle East, I would give him a D minus.

Look, what’s our relationship with Saudi Arabia? It’s not one of tension fed by colonialism. I mean, it’s just not. And his comments about extremism and terrorism, I would give him a C minus on them.

O’REILLY: Okay.

ROVE : I mean, I was glad that he said –

O’REILLY: Now let me play devil’s advocate here. I think he was talking about the religious aspect more than the nationalistic aspect. He was addressing Muslims rather than governments. Because we do as you point out have a decent relationship with Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Jordan and many other Arab nations.

But I think what the president was trying to do was the art of persuasion. First of all, sympathizing with Muslims, you’ve been exploited in the past. We understand that it wasn’t right. And we made mistakes. You know, kind of a humble pie thing. Get that common ground going.

ROVE: Yeah.

O’REILLY: I mean, here’s the bottom line.

ROVE: Yeah, common ground but.

O’REILLY: Here’s the bottom line. Mr. Rove, Mr. Rove, wait, listen to me.

ROVE: Yeah.

ROVE: Well, no, no. Look, I disagree with you.

ROVE: You know what? Who cares about whether or not they approve or like the president of the United States? The question is do they respect the policies of the United States government? And you bet they did. Because we showed strength and power and influence.

I thought one commentator put it pretty good. The most powerful thing that Barack Obama has done to win the respect of the Islamic people, of the Muslim people around the world was three well-placed shots to in a negotiation with terrorists who had hijacked a U.S. boat.

Let’s fix this… were they afraid of being invaded by the United States? You bet they did. Because under George W. Bush, we were the bullies of the world.

Now that is more accurate. Traitor Rove needs to speak more truthfully.

  2. Bilbo Hussein Baggins says:

Is Rove really that stupid? Doesn’t he realize that if the Muslim world didn’t hate us they may not want to hurt us?

No Karl, they didn’t “respect” the policies of this government, they feared the policies of this government. You can’t govern with fear. That just makes you a bully.

Ew, it makes me feel icky to take Bildo’s side, but when you stack him up against KKKarl, I mean I’ll take banal evil over pure evil any day.

But seriously, this is basically Rove disagreeing with O’Reilly’s point several times, until O’Reilly produces some statistical backup, at which point Rove declares that it’s not even important whether it’s true or not.

This is the immature brain function that guided this nation for eight years. No wonder we’re skirting on the edges of a Depression and struggling to rebuild American credibility across the globe.

This guy has gone WAY past his sell-by date. I can’t believe he’s being given any kind of soapbox to preach from. This also goes for Gingrich, Giuliani, Cheney, and the whole lot of has-been Republicans who don’t even hold office anymore.

  22. hwmnbn says:

Rove had “the math” about the last two elections. He’s talking like he thinks the GOP won and is still relevant.

    Get off the stage!

  23. misscoleopteramolly says:

If Rove wants anybody (other than the teabaggers) to take him seriously on this subject, he needs to come up with something more substantive than merely giving a “D-minus” on President Obama’s speech. Such as — what, specifically, was wrong about what he said? And why?

But this WAS Fox News, after all. No explanations needed. Just bash Obama and throw red meat at the rabid audience.

If that was a FOX News poll that O’Reilly was quoting, then you can bet that Bush’s numbers were at least 10 points lower than that.

  34. A Patriotic Anopheles Acting says:

So Turdface doesn’t think it matters what Muslims think of America now. Yet just the other week he was shouting from the rooftops about the classified photos and that their release would instill anger in Muslims toward America. Just as he bloviated that releasing the OLC memos would foment hatred toward America. What Bush’s Brain (oxymoron) is awkwardly avoiding is that it is BECAUSE we committed torturous war crimes against uncharged Muslims that they hold unfavourable views of America.

Rove, “Who cares about whether or not they approve or like the president of the United States?” This statement could just as easily apply to the Bush Administration’s attitude toward the American public as Bush enjoyed a similar approval rating (23%)right here at home and that sure didn’t affect his pigheaded approach toward world domination. Man, the GOP sure is as dumb as a box of rocks…or should I say bituminous coal?

  35. ElBruce says:

    JosephP Says:

Conservatives love America for our economic might and how we can use that might to manipulate and intimidate other countries.

I don’t think conservatives love America “for” anything. It’s pure blind worship. If you have reasons for your love of something, then it becomes possible that those qualities may need maintenance or improvement from time to time. One of the things wingnuts routinely harp on us for is pointing out that America is often imperfect in certain regards so that we can strive to improve it. If they can’t admit its imperfections, then they can’t have any reasons for why they lub it so much.

As Al Franken has put it, conservatives love America like a child loves its mother. In their eyes it can do no wrong, and it’s beloved solely because it’s theirs. Liberals love America like an adult loves another adult. Although we can admit that our relationship might have flaws, we try to improve things specifically because of our love for our country.

Some of the definitions of ‘respect’:

-to hold in esteem or honor
I would say that thanks to Bush/Cheney/Rove etc. that the Muslim people don’t have THAT kind of respect for us.

-to refrain from intruding upon or interfering with
Maybe that kind of respect Rove? As in, staying out of the bully’s way?

Hmm, yeah Bill. They didn’t like him. That’s what happens when you announce that you’re going on a Crusade in the Middle East and invade a country for no reason at all and kill over a million people and displace four million more.

Some Muslims want to kill us by the vast majority don’t. Just like some warmongers in this country want to bomb Iran and N. Korea but a majority don’t.

If we stop invading other countries for no good reason and stop torturing people, perhaps they will no longer have a good reason to hurt us. They no longer have to worry about bankrupting this country because George Bush did it for them. If there ever was a friend to the terrorists, it is George Bush. The irony is, even if they know the thruth to be otherwise, they won’t say it because their audience want to hear sadistic stuff-no difference with terrorists! Finally, the audience is majorly older, with a changing world they would not bother to adopt and incomes uncomparable with Glen Beck’s $18,000,000. For that, i would lie too in this bad economic times, but then again they use their own and that is why they may enjoy the ratings right now but sink the party as collateral damage.

  75. JYD says:

I think even the repubs have to agree that getting some respect for American policies…and some buy-in makes any type of plan to identify, prosecute extremists is a good thing. INVADING IRAQ was our first mistake, obviously that plan was doomed from the beginning and we see that over 6 years later.

W-ya should have cared whether or not Muslims at least respected/understood his policy…Unfortunately he had no plan in general, which was the problem in the first place. AND you have to have a policy that is WORTHY of respect/approval in order for it to work.

  76. Jane E. Schneider says:

Wow, toasterhead, a Muslim in a bear costume – doubly threatening! ;)

Zimzone, didn’t Rove go before Congress a few weeks ago? Whatever happened with that, I haven’t heard anything? Or am I just dreaming that he did?

I can’t view it, but I have a sneaky suspicion that…. no, an unfounded CERTAINTY (based on logic and deduction), that you are confusing people with bears again.

Bear in mind, that it can be difficult to bear the thought of humans being so overbearing, and sometimes unbearably ignorant. But, and it is worth repeating… OMG!!!! THAT BEAR HAS A MACHINE GUN!!!!! AAAAAHAHHHHHHHHHRRRGGGGGG….. RUUUUUNNNN…….

I will take to heart this troll’s doomsday knell, and I will go make peace with some bears, in the name of St. Toasterhead (well, with the end of the world so close, why not toss out a few sainthoods? Couldn’t hurt).

    _____________

    So? What’s your point?

At this very moment, there are also some Christians planning bank robberies and some Jews planning burglaries and some Hindus planning armed robberies and some Buddhists planning aggravated assaults. It is an unfortunate fact of life that people sometimes commit crimes, in spite of what their religions tell them about not committing crimes.

When groups of people are planning to commit a crime, law enforcement should do everything they can under the law to stop these groups and bring the individual perpetrators to justice.

What we should NOT do, however, is stereotype the entire religion of said group as co-conspirators.

Ah, so you’re using Yahoo Logic to prove a point. Ok:

    1 – 10 of 19,300,000 for christians planning attack

19.3 million hits versus 6.8 million. I guess Christians are three times as violent as Muslims, then.

    Now I’m really scared.

Obamawouldwipethefloorwiththetroll you’re going to get a severe rash if you don’t change those piss-soaked pants of yours. I mean really man, you have always teetered on the edge but I think the Secret Service tracking down your friend in Utah has you more asceered than usual.

  92. Fred says:

You mean like the way you supported your idiocy that 1 in 10 muslims are planning to attack us. Like that?

  93. Jane E. Schneider says:

Oops, I accidentally ‘recommended’ one of A$$wipe$’ comments -sorry, everyone!

  94. Powkat says:

Hmm – Karl’s response sounds remarkably like that of Osama bin Laden. They both support policies that depend on fear; understanding and dialogue are the enemy for them both.

Aryan brotherhood types (republicans) were arrested in Denver, Colorado in a plot to assassinate Presidential candidate Barack Obama.

Scores of abortion clinics are bombed across the country by religious zealots on the right.

    Anything to support that idiocy?

    June 5th, 2009 at 1:20 pm

    Sure!

There were almost 6,000 bank robberies committed in the U.S. in 2007. Since the majority of Americans are Christian, it stands to reason that a sizeable percentage of those bank robbers were Christian. If the statistics for 2009 follow that trend, one can safely assume that there are some Christians planning a bank robbery in the future.

Next, the Israel 2008 Crime & Safety Report states that burglaries and home break-ins are common in Tel Aviv and in Israel generally, and that the State Department currently lists Israel’s crime rate as medium. Since Israel has a majority Jewish population, it logically follows that most of these crimes are committed by Jews, and thus there are likely to be some Jews right now planning a break-in.

I could do the same for India and Thailand if you like…

  101. Uncle Fester Lurks says:

Telling the press that God told him to attack Iraq, former President George W. Bush invades the sovereign nation of Iraq, which leads to the deaths of 4000+ US soldiers, 20,000+ wounded or maimed US soldiers and kills over 150,000 innocent Iraqi men, women and children.

George W. Bush, the leader of the biggest terrorist organization on the planet.

  102. Marie says:

  107. Uncle Fester Lurks says:

President Barack Obama extends an Olive branch to the Muslim world as he tries to show them a more positive, less threatening view of our country.

The US military under George W. Bush hand out religious pamphlets and pictures around Iraq depicting Muhammad as the devil.

So tell me again, what actions under which president are making our country less safe while creating more hatred towards our country and created more enemies??

  108. Uncle Fester Lurks says:

So Rove really thinks that strength (Super Power) Power (Bigger military) and Influence (Bribes/Corruption/Greed) are why the Muslim world respected Bush and his policies?

So in Rove land we are all to believe that if you invade another country because you have the military strength to do so, kill over one hundred thousand of said country’s citizens, rape and torture those who defend the country, this country and other countries will respect you.

Memo to Fat Karl: Hey fatboy, lay off of the cocaine and stop smoking the weed, they are eating away at your brain and killing your brain cells at rapid fire speed.

  111. muzz says:

I’m not sure if was Rove or some other right-wing whack-job, that only a few weeks ago was bashing Obama because he gave the go-ahead to troops to take out the three Muslim teenagers because they had taken one hostage – but now, of course, why would we care what Muslims think og us – hypocrites one and all.

Also, please stop saying “LOL!” It makes you sound eleven. And quit spamming. You want to collect citations and present them to us, do it all at once. Hint: you can open more than one browser window at a time.

    .

    obamawipe$ Says:

I know that. He would never face anyone with opposing views. Hence, he’s a coward.

At least he isn’t scared of all the Muslims in the world, like some people we could mention…

You wingnuts are in no position right now to talk about who is or isn’t a coward of any kind.

  113. J. Fred Smug says:

Rove & Co. missed the segment of White House orientation where the vital importance of diplomacy was discussed. For Rove & Co., the entire world is a big playground for boys where American neo-KKKonservatives can take an enormous dump wherever they please with no repercussions.

  114. tarazan says:

“Who Cares” Whether Muslims ‘Approve Or Like The President Of The USA”…

Rove is talking like a bully.

He needs to start wearing his white cone-shaped hood when he comes to O’Reilly show. !!

May be he’ll bring one for O’Reilly to wear too.

  115. dasm says:

ROVE: You know what? Who cares about whether or not they approve or like the president of the United States? The question is do they respect the policies of the United States government? And you bet they did.

What? Rove must be the most deluded, lying, dishonest liar around. Doesn’t he know God is anti-lying?

  116. maxamillion says:

I remember when Cheney, Dick gave an answer similar to this when informed that majority of americans are against the war. To which Dick said “So”.

  117. ElBruce says:

Who cares about whether or not they approve or like the president of the United States?

I do, Karl. I care very much. It’s critical to both our national security and global economic interests that we stop pissing off everybody in the world for no good reason.

  118. wiley says:

I care what Muslims think. Pretty silly to think that we are really in the death-grip of mortal enmity with the Muslim world. For the life of me, I don’t understand why some people fall for bipolar comic book worldviews. Makes me wonder if they actually know many people.

  119. Xisithrus says:

Rove, your supposed to take Lindseys lead and tell people your scared and you overreacted…

  120. Lusmu says:

Nobody respects a bully. You have mistaken fear and loathing for respect, Karl.

And the Bush administration botched even their attempt at using military power to their advantage. Pathetic.

  121. curious says:

Let’s see, why should we care of the Muslims like Obama? Hmmm! Perhaps because it makes it a little easier to help the peace process. Perhaps because it is better to have our President respected by other people and country’s. Perhaps because respect is better then hate. Perhaps because we live in a world bigger then our own part of it. And we must deal with friends and adversaries alike. And because it is in our own self interest to do this with respect between party’s and nations. We will always have enemies. But why make enemies with everyone?

And mostly, because Bush and his policies are so hated, and Obama is not Bush. Rove of course would like to bomb everyone out of existence that do not agree with us. But when you think of how many country’s do not agree with us, who would we have left to deal with? Just a handful. That is Rove’s idea of consensus.

  122. republicanSScareme says:

“The question is do they respect the policies of the United States government? And you bet they did. Because we showed strength and power and influence.”

Isn’t it funny (and deadly) how these intimidating bullies think they’re respected? Typical rich thug.

President Obama gives a foreign policy speech which is articulate and redresses problems in the Middle East from a fresh perspective. The speech is well received around the world and in this country. That is except for the brilliant Carl Rove and his Republican Party.
Obama’s speech was refreshing change from the 8 years of the Cheney/Bush fiasco.
The idea that hope and solutions are possible is inspiring. This political hack Rove pontifics on Obama’s shortfall is laughable except that Rove appear to be taking himself quite seriously.
The world and a majority in this country can count our blessings that the country is in the hands of a President who has morals and a vision of a better world.
