During his guest-hosting gig on Bill Bennett’s radio show this morning, RNC Chairman Michael Steele commented on the Wall Street Journal report that the Obama administration plans to appoint a “Special Master for Compensation” to ensure that companies receiving federal bailout funds are abiding by executive-pay guidelines. Echoing the common conservative criticism of the Obama administration’s use of so-called “czars,” Steele wondered aloud, “can the people appoint a czar to make sure these numb nuts don’t do what they’re doing?” Listen here:
Transcript:
STEELE: And I think the president has now announced yet another czar. We probably have more czars in the United States right now then they’ve ever had in the entire Russian bureacracy going back to the days of the czars. But yet we have another czar that the president has who’s going to oversee, I believe, how we spend the money. I think that’s a, I remember hearing something about that, which I found to be somewhat fascinating. They, what do they call, they’re appointing a special master for compensation to ensure that companies receiving federal bailout funds are abiding by executive pay guidelines. Oh, ok that’s right, they want to make sure that nobody’s getting paid more than they’re supposed to be getting paid. Is that the goal here? So so, can the people appoint a czar to make sure these numb nuts don’t do what they’re doing because this is…ugh…Paul. Let’s just go to Michigan. Paul, what’s up man?
How the oratorical skills of the party of Lincoln have fallen.
June 5th, 2009 at 4:47 pmYou see, Michael, the people did appoint a czar to make sure that these people are doing what they’re doing. It was called an election and we won it and you didn’t. Deal with it.
June 5th, 2009 at 4:48 pmahhhhhh Mr. Steele, the chess board master.
who knows what this masterful political move can mean? we can only guess at the brilliant adjustment this could mean later in the game.
June 5th, 2009 at 4:49 pmThis is really getting out of hand. Monkey see – monkey do.
June 5th, 2009 at 4:53 pmOne starts this kind of trash talk and the others keep it up.
You’d think they’d have gotten past this in junior high.
It is unacceptable in the public venue when politicians talk with such disrespect as Steele, Inhofe, Palin, et al.
These people will make it through six years without one constructive, adult, thing to say. The GOP is all but over. They are the party of lies and mud slinging non-sense. They lost in 2006, 2008, and they will lose in 2010.
June 5th, 2009 at 4:53 pmCzars and Special Masters? What is next, Ayatollahs and Sheiks? These special positions are worthless because nobody within this administration regulates any portion of our Government. All they do is spend like Richie Rich. Therefore, Michael Steele is right. We have a large amount of imbeciles, which includes your leader, sinking our country down the drain of failure.
June 5th, 2009 at 4:55 pmWhy isn’t the NAACP all over his case?
June 5th, 2009 at 4:56 pmSteele refers to members of the Obama administration as ‘numb nuts.’ »
– - Steele must be a fan of Charles Barkley who unwittingly used that term on-air last week in describing TNT’s basketball coverage producer.

I think the Obama administration probably told the NAACP not to get involved. Much the same way they told Sharpton and other black leaders to stay out of the fray of the McCain/Palin hate fest.

June 5th, 2009 at 5:04 pmMichael Steele is a buffoon.. he will say anything to appease whomever it is that’s in his audience. last week he was black on C-Span when talking to black students. he snickers when a white caller refers to the president as the magic negro. he’s pro-choice when being interview by a female reporter for GQ. He just goes along to get along.. except for the ‘principles’ of the republican party, this tool stands for absolutely nothing. He knows he wasn’t hired on merit.. white males should be really mad at him for taking this plum spot!!

Several months ago, when you called yourself RaptureReady, you made this comment in a thread:
Another worthless study by a liberal/secular-progressive college. It’s plain and simple. If you feel sexual urges, read your bible. The bible says that an idle mind is the devil’s workshop.
I’ve been searching through my Bible and I can’t find the passage of which you spoke. Can you identify the book, chapter and verse for me? Thanks.

June 5th, 2009 at 5:07 pmIn answer to your question Mr. Steele, yes, the people can “appoint a czar to keep the numb nuts from doing what they are doing.” The process for such an appointment is called an “election”. We held one last year. The people appointed (or as we like to say here in the reality-based world “elected”) a gentleman named Obama to stop the numb nuts in the Republican Party from continuing to screw up the country. No charge for the civics lesson numb nut.

This month, it has finally begun to stabilize. Also, check out the current state of the stock market and notice a pattern.
June 5th, 2009 at 5:32 pmOh yeah! I forgot about the baby! Let’s see… Tiffany’s pregnancy was first announced here, when? December? And she was said to be one month along (as absurd as this claim was)? That would make the baby due in maybe a month or two, right?

I cannot recall ever hearing anyone in our government referred to as a “czar” until Reagan took office. Maybe it happened before he came along, but I don’t remember it. Was Reagan’s the first American administration to have a “czar” of some kind? Ironic if it was, since he was so anti-Soviet Union.
I hate that ‘czar’ crap. But someone does need to keep an eye on what the executive compensation is for those companies getting bail-out money. They have so many ways of hiding compensation nowadays. If Obama didn’t appoint someone to do it they’d criticize him for THAT.
June 5th, 2009 at 5:33 pmHey Wayne Ant, I don’t recall either. I don’t recall anyone in the Obama Administration referring to anyone as the “czar” of anything either? Maybe I missed something?

June 5th, 2009 at 5:33 pmWell, it was a red state so that means at least half or more of those terminated pregnancies were republican who sought out a doctor to fulfill their desire. Its the mothers and boyfriends who decided to abort. And Im pretty sure many of those mothers and boyfriends/spouse attended church as well and lets not forget Roeder killed a person in a church, like Adkisson, a Hannity book reader, did.

My mother’s best friend is 86 and voted for Obama in November and that was the first vote in her lifetime for a Democrat, too. She was so funny telling me about how she had “no time for McCain after he picked that Pallin” (as she pronounced it) because she found it insulting to Republicans and women.
I hope she’s around for the next election so she can help re-elect President Obama.

You should have attended Oral Roberts, where true critical thinkers are created.
June 5th, 2009 at 6:08 pm
Most “famous” graduates from Roberts are part of the religious sect ; that is as far removed from “critical thinking” as you and the entire GOP are from honesty ……….
June 5th, 2009 at 6:11 pmThose women, LTTH, would have gone elsewhere to get what they wanted done and you know that.
Going after Tiller doesnt cure the problem, you know this.
June 5th, 2009 at 6:12 pmOkay, LTTH, lets say that I could not breathe on my own, and I wanted to have the plug pulled on my life, would that be murder?
June 5th, 2009 at 6:13 pmlooktothehills Says:
Czars and Special Masters? What is next, Ayatollahs and Sheiks? These special positions are worthless because nobody within this administration regulates any portion of our Government. All they do is spend like Richie Rich. Therefore, Michael Steele is right. We have a large amount of imbeciles, which includes your leader, sinking our country down the drain of failure.
Your imbecilic President had quite a few Czars of his own. Did you protest that? No? Why not?

What about all the lives that Tiller saved?

Unfortunately killing Dr. Tiller has made it that much more difficult for women who need a late term abortion to get one.
June 5th, 2009 at 6:19 pmHey, Tom, when you’re out shopping for your Troll-B-Gone, could you look for something to kill mythical numbers?
There is no way that Dr. Tiller performed 60,000 abortions. There is no way any single doctor performing abortions would perform that many, and Dr. Tiller was one of the few doctors who would perform late-term abortions; which are risky, specialized surgeries.
60,000 is a bogus number.

Hehehehe…
Oral Roberts built a hospital, called City of Faith, which had no internal oxygen system. The entire place ran off of bottled 02, until the city found out and fined the crap out of them.
I guess critical thinking at ORU didn’t extent to the logical way to build a hospital.
June 5th, 2009 at 6:29 pmlooktothehills Says:
Well California San Bernardino (obviously a liberal university), I unequivocally do not support violence towards the opposition. What about Tiller killing approximately 70,000 lives?
Ok, 70,000/365 = 191. Now let’s divide that by 10 years. That would mean that Tiller would have had to perform 19 abortions a day every day of the week for 10 years. Or if we divide it by 20 years, that’s 9 abortions a day, every day of the week for 20 years.
Now, what do you think is the likelihood of that happening?
Do you have the capacity to think for yourself? It’s looking like you don’t.
June 5th, 2009 at 6:29 pmNow now, that’s no way to talk about your fellow reightwingers Mr. Steele…

60,000 is Billo’s number and since Billo is bogus, it stands to reason that his number would also be bogus. Just like it was bogus when he said that Dr. Tiller was performing late term abortions on women who wanted to be able to get back into their bikinis.
June 5th, 2009 at 6:33 pmI havent seen evidence of that. I did say hypocrite but thats a criticism and I never took into consideration your being raised in a conservative family I went only by what you have said.

What you missed is that all the troll manifestations on this thread are coming from one person . . . one sad, lonely, pathetic dummy who is desperately seeking attention and has no friends (other than his left hand which he “dates” frequently, I am told).

Project much?
June 5th, 2009 at 7:24 pmI take it your were similarly alarmed when Dick Cheney advanced his “Unitary Executive” theory of government, were you, Romartin?
Or when George W. Bush declared via signing statements that he didn’t have to obey the law if he felt it interfered with his powers as Commander-in-Chief? How about when he declared that he had the authority to identify anyone he chose as an “enemy combatant” and thus deny them the civil rights protections guaranteed under the Constitution?
Did those “power grabs” alarm you similarly?
June 5th, 2009 at 7:26 pmSounds like you speak from long experience of delusional, schizoid thoughts ricocheting throughout a self induced prison of mental sorrow…Please do not reply, this does not mean I want to talk to you…
June 5th, 2009 at 7:28 pmYou’ve got to look forward locust, your candidate won.
It’s important to deal with what’s happening NOW.
Explain how this is not a power grab.
June 5th, 2009 at 7:28 pmThat’s not a “power grab”, stupid troll, it’s a power shift. A shift that’s been years in the making and has moved us away from the ignorant, greedy, and cowardly approach of the Reichwhiners.
June 5th, 2009 at 7:33 pmOh, I see. “Don’t look back there; nothing to see. Let’s look forward. Let’s not learn from history.”
No, actually, Romartin, I’m just trying to gauge how much of your concern about any Presidential “power grab” is based on Constitutional principles and how much on partisan sniping. If, as I suspect, it’s mostly the latter, I’m sure you can see how that would leave you with little or no credibility on the issue.
June 5th, 2009 at 7:34 pmPerhaps the trolls are so frantic because their stunted intellects can’t fathom that emergency action, expensive emergency action, is needed to address the countless crises we face?
June 5th, 2009 at 7:39 pmMaybe you’re not aware of this, but Obama has 21 czars.
They serve “at the pleasure of the President”.
They were not confirmed by the Senate, yet have duties that would seem to be more consistent with those of Cabinet members.
You are blinded, in you disdain of Bush, to our current President having more power than he should.
June 5th, 2009 at 7:40 pmMy “disdain” for Chimpy grew out his ever increasingly bad decisions and apparent inability to flexibly act on real-world, real-time, crises.
June 5th, 2009 at 7:59 pmOur troll has a pattern here at TP.
Our troll makes a claim, i.e., “What Obama is doing again is an obvious power grab.”
Next poster states “this is not a power grab.”
Troll counters with, “Explain how this is not a power grab.”
Our troll is NEVER able to back up ANY of his/her claims. Instead, troll attempts to deflect burden of proof upon the first person to engage troll.

Oh, so now having czars is a problem.
“Serving at the pleasure of the president”, isn’t that what we were told by the reichwingers about the Attorney Generals when Bush summarily dismissed them -it was ok then, but it is a problem now?
Double standards anyone? Sheesh…
June 5th, 2009 at 8:03 pmHaving SO MANY czars is a problem! There is no one they must be accountable to except the president, you twit.
June 5th, 2009 at 8:06 pmRomartin,
After what the Bush Crime Family did to this country – we won’t be able to look forward for many years. Bush and Cheney broke the law and did whatever they wanted to do.
Let’s see,
-We have a war in Iraq – started based on lies, costing the US billions
-We had another war started in Afghanistan – costing the US billions
-Economic disaster that nearly bankrupted the world
-The failure of GMC that Cheney admitted that he and Bush knew about but chose to do NOTHING
-We’ve got the legacy of torture from BushCo, which has ruined America’s reputation in the world.
You’re the one who is blind.

Wow.. that is a new spin I have not heard. Give it up – that one will not work either.
What President Obama is really doing is fixing the screw ups left over from Bush… screw up such as starting unneeded wars while giving tax breaks to friends, turning his back on regulations and giving top level jobs to those with no experience.
Isn’t the real threat to the party of NO the fact a successful President Obama means the absolute death of their party?
June 5th, 2009 at 8:15 pm“numb nuts” – a favorite expression among giggling 10 year-old boys, about 30 years ago. It makes sense Steele would still use it.

June 5th, 2009 at 8:17 pmThe so-called “czars” don’t have any authority, you twit. They are there to inform and advise the President and serve as liaisons to others involved in the particular issues.
Leave it to a Reichwhiner to complain that a President is too involved with too many issues.
June 5th, 2009 at 8:17 pmExactly. Kind of like Ari Fleischer claiming that the President’s speech in Cairo was “too balanced.”
Reichwhiners are easily the most negative, pessimistic and destructive bunch of “individuals” ever. Without question.

I just don’t like the name, and I wish that one guy had never started it… who was that again?
But “czars” actually have real titles other than that. For example, the head of the DEA is called the “Drug Czar,” but his pay stub says “Administrator of Drug Enforcement.” As such, many of them do have to be confirmed by the Senate. It’s not a separate position, and none of those are equivalent to a Cabinet-level post.
But hey, nice guess.
June 5th, 2009 at 8:31 pmRomartin16985 Babbles:

So what is your concern again? Quantity or lack of accountability?

And don’t forget this fits rather nicely in the Unitary Executive Theory that you reichwingers were so keen to support, you twit.
It’s only a “unitary our executive theory.” But at least Obama isn’t claiming any powers Bush didn’t. If he was really doing even a tenth of what wingnuts claim he is, they wouldn’t be walking around free by now.
June 5th, 2009 at 8:47 pmGregor, I see Romartin has neatly dodged the question of Bush-era “power grabs”.
Well, not so neatly, actually. Pretty sloppily. This leaves me with the strong suspicion that Romartin’s concern for executive overreaching is based almost entirely on concern for partisan sniping.
June 5th, 2009 at 8:53 pmI guess Steele’s comments would make me angry if I thought anyone – even in the GOP – gave the slightest sh!t what Steele says about anything. How’s life as a punchline working out for ya, Mikey?

Now that the tables are turned, they are oh so concerned with respect for the law, the Constitution, and the reach of the federal government.
Partisan sniping? You bet it is…

June 5th, 2009 at 9:04 pmThe Republicans didn’t get the leader they need, but they got the leader they deserve.
June 5th, 2009 at 9:17 pmAmen. But Republicans are far too cynical to ever realize that.
Rather, they think themselves rather enlightened to have A Black Man as GOP Chair. But THEY certainly don’t believe in affirmative action.
Nope. Not at all.
June 5th, 2009 at 9:34 pmYou are nuts pete if you don’t believe so many czars provide the President another avenue to govern without accountability to Congress, as well as cloud up that promised transparency.
And to believe that our current economic crisis requires the enormous spending, and of course taxing, to come out of it defies everything we already know about how increased taxes and spending affect revenue to the government, inflation, and unemployment. Even the Chinese laughed at Geithner as he explained Obamanomics.

June 5th, 2009 at 10:02 pmThe thing is, stupid troll, there has been nothing, outside the Reichwing echo chamber, to suggest that President Obama is seeking any special powers. I guess I just can’t manage to be so frightened. Of course, I understand what he’s trying to accomplish. So do a majority of Americans, including some who didn’t vote for him.
BTW. There are some signs the economy has begun to stabilize, though recovery is some time down the road. This is especially important because once the economy starts to improve we can start seeing a return on all that “spending”.
June 5th, 2009 at 10:08 pmGo soak your head.

June 5th, 2009 at 10:17 pmTroll 241 said “Even the Chinese laughed at Geithner as he explained Obamanomics.”

Even one czar would provide the opportunity for the president to govern without accountability -I am not sure why “so many” have you in such a tissy.
At any rate, lack of accountability, secrecy, transparency, and the attempt on the part of the executive to claim special privileges were not a conservative concern under Bush. Quite the contrary, it was something you mouthbreathers cheered as “leadership” even though us “libruls” warned it was all a very, very bad idea.
But, oh no -you conservatives were too absorbed in your cult of the Bush personality and them “libruls” were driven by Bush Derangement Syndrome, and wanted “Merca” to fail in Afghanistan and appease them evil Muslims…
“Accountability to Congress”, you say? Didn’t Bush claim his executive orders could bypass Congress to establish a warantless surveillance program, as you morons cheered him on?
Oh, I forgot again: IOKIYA

And to believe that our current economic crisis requires the enormous spending, and of course taxing, to come out of it defies everything we already know about how increased taxes and spending affect revenue to the government, inflation, and unemployment.
When the economy is doing well, reduce spending and draw down the deficit. When the economy is doing poorly, increase spending, and use the deficit as a stimulus cushion. Taxes should remain at a constant, progressive rate. That simple prescription will result in steady and significant economic growth forever.
A comparison of the history of all industrialized economies the world over demonstrates this. Wherever it has been applied, conservative economic theory has always led to massive collapse. You’d think a lemming would wonder why there aren’t any old lemmings around; you’d also think a wingnut would wonder why their “ideas” have never actually worked when tried.
.
Romartin16985 Says:
Even the Chinese laughed at Geithner as he explained Obamanomics.
Actually, they laughed at his comment that “Chinese assets [in U.S. Treasury Bonds] are very safe.” Link. Not encouraging… but Obama isn’t the one who drove the economy into the toilet.

Remember in ‘96 when the R’s wanted to push through a line-item veto so that when Dole won he’d be able to hack up budget bills after passage? They were so sure they had the election in the bag, they crammed it right through. That gave Clinton the line-item veto to use against their pork projects, until they had to go running to a judge to get it declared unconstitutional two years later. Heh heh. Good times.

I think everyone should be clear on what this phrase really means. It really should be stated as “they serve the nation at the pleasure of the president.”
The Bush Administration treated it as “they serve President Bush at his pleasure.” Their loyalty was to the man, not to the office or to the nation. This is, IMHO, the primary reason why they failed at governing.
June 6th, 2009 at 1:06 amReeeeaaaalll classy, Mr. Steele.
June 6th, 2009 at 2:49 amMicheal Steele has been marginalized by the far right and is now taking his marching orders from non-elected airbags in the RNC or Rush, Newt and Cheney. He is a mere puppet and has the backbone of a jelly fish. He is an embarrassment.

Of course, unless they’re both reading from the same GOP playbook…
June 6th, 2009 at 7:18 amI agree with the notion that we don’t need Czars running around America. Russia can have those if they chose, but not in a Democracy.
As far as the “numb nuts” comment goes. I suppose you do what it takes to remain faithful to your significant other, even if it means injecting lidocaine into your scrotum. If only Slick Willy had heard of this technique.
June 6th, 2009 at 8:03 amIrony, thy name is Michael Steele.

Sheesh!
June 6th, 2009 at 8:52 amI don’t recall Obama every claiming that he would provide jobs immediately after assuming office. The economic conditions left by GWB&Co are such that cannot be remedied in a short period of time. In fact, Obama said repeatedly, this would get worse before it gets better, but his programs will succeed in the long run.
June 6th, 2009 at 9:10 amOur lame trolls are blaming Obama because miracles haven’t been achieved in 4 months — they are so pathetic and desperate, they make me laugh at their stupidity.
Eight years of disastrous leadership is not going to be repaired in a few short months, but that doesn’t stop the trolls from making their pointless arguments.
Oh yeah? If they’re numb nuts, then what are you? nyah, nyah!

For the sake of argument let’s assume that what you say is true. And just for fun let’s toss in the bit about Obama not being born in the U.S. and thus ineligible to hold the office of POTUS. It’s safe to assume that the Bush administration, the FBI and the DOJ had access to any information that you have and more. You can only conclude that this information was known and they simply chose to do nothing about it, or they themselves were part of a vast conspiracy to perpetrate the largest election fraud in US history
.
Bush knew, yet did all he could to make the presidential transition go smoothly. Chief Justice Roberts knowingly administered the oath of office to someone he knew to be ineligible. Cheney knew. Gonzales knew. etc. etc.

I do have my own opinions, liberals just don’t like them. Liberals know deep down that people must, and do, live their lives in a conservative manner, and liberalism always fails eventually.
When the economy is hurting, people tighten their belts. They don’t go on a spending spree as our government is, convincing the gullible that we must spend like never before in order to cure all our problems. (By the way, the stimulus spending was supposed to keep unemployment under 8%).
The public knows that diminishing the private sector in order to give government more control over our lives never worked for any other country and it won’t work for us.
The public knows that we must defend ourselves against those who wish our country harm by showing strength first and being proud of the good that we’ve done in the world.
The public knows that politicians will always have political agendas. Putting them in charge of anything, be it our schools or health care, will result in a system with conflicting goals that include getting those in charge re-elected.
So no, I’m quite happy as a conservative as I know that the truth always finds a way.

With all due respect, you may see the world that way, but many of us don’t. We are, quite literally, more open-minded than conservatives. Your side and our side each view the world through different lenses.
We just believe that our lens does not distort things as much as yours appears to do.
June 6th, 2009 at 7:08 pmWayne,
You are deluding yourself. You think you’re open minded when all you are is closing your mind to realities. Maybe you believe that the fact that life is unfair (it is) is something to be rectified by the government. What you don’t consider is that we are all born different, different aptitudes, desires, energy levels, etc., and it’s up to each of us to make the most of what we have. We will get out of life what we put into it. If we decide to put in less effort, we will end up with less. The government can only help in striving to provide fairness in opportunity to all, while providing for those of us who are truly disabled in some way.
Just look what liberalism has done to California and New York.
Your lens is opaque, and you don’t even know it. Or maybe you do, but you just feel better about yourself by believing you are helping people when all you’re really doing is ensuring them a crappy life of crumbs doled out by the government.

Yes, it’s helped some people survive who would have died otherwise.
And I think it is you who have closed your mind to the possibilities for all in a liberal society.

Our lame trolls are blaming Obama because miracles haven’t been achieved in 4 months…
Apparently they take it quite literally when they refer to him as “the messiah.” Which makes the fact that they also want to crucify him a matter of some concern and alarm.

Citation please?
Never mind, I Googled it myself. Although I found many references to the same study, there’s just that one. It seems to have focused entirely on quizzing people about whether people were upset or concerned about economic inequality in America today. Turns out conservatives are perfectly happy with the fact that many people live in abject poverty, and liberals seem to have a problem with it. Shocking! Therefore, they conclude that conservatives must be happier than liberals. Pretty crappy methodology; they would have gotten different results if they’d talked about abortion or gay marriage. Also, being concerned with improving the lot of the world is hardly the same thing as being miserable.

The government =/= a “people.”
Macroeconomics =/= microeconomics.
Seriously, y’all’s understanding of economic principles is kindergarten-level at best.

I have met a lot of lazy conservatives. I have met a lot of lazy conservatives who got money from mums and daddums. I have met a lot of intelligent and extremely hard-working poor people, people who have done back-breaking work every day that conservatives could never manage to do for an hour, who hardly ever get anywhere.
If the U.S. economy were essentially meritocratic, then your argument might hold up. But it’s not. Now, I’m not saying we should take away all of the rich peoples’ property and give it to the poor; I’ll grant that some inequality is in fact necessary for incentive. But acting like all rich people morally deserve everything they have, and the corollary that all poor people are lazy sacks of sh!t, is offensive to common sense and patently insulting to millions and millions of perfectly good, smart, hard-working Americans who just haven’t caught a break.
If you would further your case, then you should be doing everything to guarantee that opportunity for all is being maximized in this country (as liberals do) rather than waving a magic wand and claiming it’s already there (as conservatives do).

Maybe you’re projecting your own feelings, as I NEVER said all poor people are lazy.
You are the one here who is biased. A very small percentage of the so called rich got their money from an inheritance. Most have sacrificed and worked HARD to get where they are. This is a fact that just doesn’t compute with liberals, as it gets in the way of their fake concern.
Liberals do not have a monopoly on caring for those less fortunate, and striving to maximize equality of opportunity, as you also erroneously believe. Those evil rich donate and pay taxes out the ying yang. Maybe you’re jealous?
June 7th, 2009 at 11:47 amI knew he would still be wallpapering this thread. I take the Holocaust seriously enough not to wear it out. I am not nor have I ever been anti-semitic. I’m agnostic. Why in the world would I be anti-semitic? The assertion that I would “forget” or approve of any persecution and systematic murder is anti-social.
