ThinkFast: June 5, 2009

ap090208024316

Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin (R) attacked the Obama administration for wanting to “control the people.” Palin, who has rejected stimulus funds for her state, said in a speech on Wednesday that the administration is enacting fiscal policies that “fly in the face of principles” and “defy Economics 101.”

The U.S. economy lost 345,000 jobs in May, according to government figures released today. The numbers showed “a sharp slowing in the pace of job losses that fueled hopes that the economy was on its way toward a recovery.” The unemployment rate is now at 9.4 percent, “its highest point in a quarter-century.”

Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) yesterday said the Senate would be adding immigration reform to its 2009 agenda. “As far as I’m concerned we have three major issues we have to do this year, if at all possible: No. 1 is healthcare; No. 2 is energy, global warming; No. 3 is immigration reform,” said Reid.

The Hill reports that several Republican lawmakers revealed “some of what they had been told at a closed-door Intelligence Committee hearing on the interrogation of terrorism suspects.” Congressional Democrats accused them of “publicly discussing classified information” after they conducted on-the-record interviews about the closed hearing where they claimed the Bush administration’s torture program had been effective.

A new Pew Research Center poll has found that “Americans who have learned at least a little about Judge Sonia Sotomayor are more likely to offer traits or aspects they like about” her “than things they do not like.” Forty-five percent said they found something to like about Sotomayor, such as her background or experience, while 26 percent said they had learned something about her that they dislike.

Yesterday, federal authorities charged a man with making threats against President Obama for allegedly telling bank employees that he is “on a mission” to kill the president. A warrant has been issued for the arrest of Daniel James Murray, and the Secret Service are trying to locate him in Utah.

As banks are “quietly savoring” their defeat of bankruptcy legislation that “would have given judges the power to lower the amount owed on a home loan,” the New York Times reports that the financial industry has “a far stronger hand to play” in coming legislative battles than it may appear. The cornerstone of the industry’s strategy is its efforts to divide Democrats while investing heavily in lobbying.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel praised President Obama’s speech in Cairo, calling it an “ideal basis” to pursue peace efforts in the Middle East. Obama also said Friday that “he was dispatching his top Middle East envoy, George Mitchell, to the region next week to follow up on issues raised during the Cairo speech. Time was of the essence, he said, for Israelis and the Palestinians to step up their efforts.”

Yesterday, the Justice Department “took the rare step of asking a court to release from prison two convicted Alaska state legislators after a review of their corruption cases appeared to uncover lapses of the sort that helped derail the prosecution of the state’s long-serving Republican senator, Ted Stevens.”

And finally: Near the end a recent comedy show by Fox News host Glenn Beck, an elderly woman came up to a reporter covering the event and asked, “What’s the name of this movie?” “It’s Glenn Beck’s comedy show,” the reporter replied, asking back, “What movie are you trying to see?” “That museum movie — the one where the old statues come to life,” she replied. “You’re definitely in the wrong theater,” the reporter said, who later thought to himself, “you’re not that far off.”

I’d like to see Palin’s college transcripts showing that she took and passed Econ 101. Hmm, thought not.

The Hill reports that several Republican lawmakers revealed “some of what they had been told at a closed-door Intelligence Committee hearing on the interrogation of terrorism suspects.” Congressional Democrats accused them of “publicly discussing classified information”

Would the party that provided cover for an administration that outed a CIA operative tasked with the Middle East and nukes blink an eye at revealing classified information again? Hmm, thought not.

    Happy Friday all!

Dr. Matt, the GNOP is literally banking of America’s failure over the next 17 months so they can win back some seats. You’re right, it’s killing them to see a glimmer of hope that the economy may be on the upswing and that diplomacy is trumping violent domination worldwide.

    PEACE

If true, shouldn’t their clearances be revoked? That is what would happen to any average person who released classified info. Loss of a necessary clearance would be immediately followed by loss of one’s job. These congressfolk should at minimum lose their committee assignment.

Gee, it looks like our gift to the financial industry of $700,000,000,000 of our money is being well-spent.

Notably absent from the list is any effort at holding the Bush Administration accountable for War Crimes and Crimes Against Humanity.

When is the International Community going to step up to the plate and take BushCo. to task? By the U.S. not holding them accountable, it opens the door wide open for International War Crimes tribunals.

Ever buy a house Governor Palin? When most people buy a home, they take a on a large amount debt. The reason they do this is that the purchase will pay them back in the long run.

Had you paid attention in history class you have learned that FDR used deficit spending (smart investment) to put the country back to work, pull the nation our of the Great Depression, and build a massive infrastructure that businesses could use to prosper.

A billion dollars in infrastructure spending creates 47,000 family wage jobs. For every dollar spent, six dollars will be returned to economy.

It’s called investing in our house Governor. It pays back in the long run. People work, they buy things, the economy gets rolling.

There’s your econ 101 lesson for the day.

    P.S. Please run in 2012. Please. ;)

  27. winddancer says:

Palin – needs to be reminded of her statement that one of the responsibilities of the Vice President is to “get in there with the Congress and work on policy.” It was as nonsensical as this latest about the federal government wanting to control the states by providing them with additional funds via the stimulus program.

The Republicans on the House Intelligence Committee who openly discussed what had been talked about in a closed door session should obviously have their security clearances lifted. This is a blind partisan and organized escalation of “leaking” classified information for political reasons. By the way…whether torture was effective or not (and all indications are that it had the opposite effect) is beside the point. Killing 6 million Jews in death camps in Germany, Poland, etc. was effective too. Does that make it “right?”

Lastly, the financial industry’s action in regard to legislation in order to benefit only themselves is exactly why they should have been nationalized from the very beginning.

In all fairness to the Palins, their situation is quite different from the average homeowner because they “built” a house themselves with materials “purchased” from the same supplier who sold to the taxpayer-funded ice arena that was built down the road from the new Casa de Palin.

As mayor of Wasilly, Palin made sure to fix the permit laws to cover their activities, and to date no receipts for either materials or labor for the Palin’s house have surfaced.

  40. Mr.Bungle says:

“Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin (R) attacked the Obama administration for wanting to “control the people.””

Governor, true control of the people comes when group of crazy free market radicals, borrow and spend our nation into a economic catastrophe.

For 30 years or so your party has convinced our countrymen that they can have a government for free if they just borrow the money. Republicans decry taxes, but never shut down spending. Why? Cause congresspeople need projects to trumpet when they go home to run for re-election.

You can’t cut taxes and cut deficits without cutting spending. It just doesn’t work that way. Whenever anyone puts this to s ‘fiscally conservative’ Republican, they never answer what program it is they will cut to offset the tax cut. why don’t they? Americans love all those programs that would actually be impactful enough, if cut, to offset the lost revenue. They love education for their kids, roads, hospitals, military, police, social security…. etc. WHAT WILL YOU CUT GOVERNOR?

Now the country is in the midst of the worst job losses in a quarter century because of your parties fanatical adherence to economic policy which has been proven to not work. (At least it doesn’t work for those of us who actually WORK for a living.)

  43. gummble-bee-itch says:

Badpuppy: The 8.9 percent April unemployment rate was based on 13.7 million Americans out of work. But that number doesn’t include discouraged workers or people who gave up looking for work after four weeks. Add those 700,000 people, and the unemployment rate would be 9.3 percent.

It’s funny, but the Left was pointing this out for years during the Bush administration and the Right denied it.

  46. stewarjt says:

[Palin]said in a speech on Wednesday that the administration is enacting fiscal policies that “fly in the face of principles” and “defy Economics 101.”

This statement is a lie. In fact when private spending, consumption, investment and exports are collapsing as now, then the alternative to a great depression is a massive increase in government purchases and other spending. This is exactly what President Obama and Democrats in Congress did with the economic stimulus bill. This increase in aggregate demand will increase output and employment.

This is classic textbook macroeconomic principles and an application of Keynesian aggregate demand management, Gov. Palin. Not that I’d expect you to know it or understand even after I’ve explained it.
