West Virginia declares bituminous coal the official state rock.

Coal: Miss West Virginia (Grist)Gov. Joe Manchin (D-WV) has made coal the official state rock of his state. According to the West Virgina Coal Association, the teen-aged daughter of a coal company employee “got the measure placed before the state legislature this year with the help of Sen. Truman Chafin (D-Mingo) and Del. Harry Keith White (D-Mingo).” On Wednesday, Manchin signed the resolution into law:

Bituminous coal is now West Virginia’s official state rock. Gov. Joe Manchin has signed a House of Delegates resolution making the designation based primarily on coal’s contribution to the state’s economy and history.

Despite $118 million in coal-mining annual income, West Virginia has the nation’s lowest median household income, worst educational services, worst social assistance, the highest population with disabilities, and nearly a quarter of West Virginia children in poverty. (HT: Grist)

This “mineral not a rock” thing is fascinating, since many states do have state minerals, sometimes along with state rocks. Here’s a chart. So they just got it completely bass-ackwards. They made coal the “state rock” and left the “state mineral” open.

I grew up in West Virginia and walked to school as a kid always noticing the coal dust in the air and on the ground. The towns are dirty and the infrastructure is falling apart. We really need to be spending some of the aid we give to foreign countries right here at home! ASAP!

When I was a kid I was contracted to make coal jewelry for Miss West Virginia to wear to the pageant! I tried to seal it but later learned that when she wore it she was covered with black soot from the coal. How fitting!

Despite $118 million in coal-mining annual income, West Virginia has the nation’s lowest median household income, worst educational services, worst social assistance, the highest population with disabilities, and nearly a quarter of West Virginia children in poverty.

Perhaps it’s partly because of that coal mining income, and the power the industry wields in the state, that its people are so poorly served by government and society? After all, coal mining is still a brute force activity, relying on workers willing to endure dangerous working conditions and to risk serious long-term health consequences in order to be profitable. A prosperous, well-educated workforce is going to run counter to those needs, and a source of employment that has changed little over generations is not going to inspire many to explore new career paths.

On topic: when a Human Rights Commission investigator was asked on Al Jazeera yesterday how Israel could commit war crimes against the Palestenians in the last bombardment, he said the main reasons were fear and dehumanization. It’s too easy to make fun of the ignorance of people in West Virginia, but at the end of the day it is divisive, and there’ll never be change if we can’t find commonality. The real oppressors expoit the wedges and separations because it distracts from what’s really going on. There’s actually a great deal of protest in the communities of West Virginia against the coal companies:

Indeed, realness. In fact, dehumanization of the enemy is essential in wartime.

It’s an innate human defense mechanism that kicks in when faced with conflict. We see milder forms of it even in sports. How many of us derided the students of rival high schools, for instance? Same kind of principal. It just gets kicked up a notch in wartime.

pastcaring, I’m sure military training maximizes the effect, as a practical matter of effective soldiering.

Oh, absolutely. No question about that.

My point was that when a recruit begins military training, my understanding is that the the haircut, the uniform, the rigorous physical training, is all targeted toward breaking down to some extent the individuality of the soldier.

It makes sense. An army is most effective when it works as a single unit, and individuality can interfere with that, al least among the grunts.

  88. Doodlebug Shayne says:

Studies going back over 50 years have repeatedly arrived at the same conclusion — racists have lower IQs than non-racists. The average intelligence quotient (IQ) of all members of the human race is 100 on the Stanford-Binet scale, as illustrated in the bell curves in the figure below. The average IQ of racists is up to 4 IQ points less than this (Montagu 1952 & 1988, Allport 1946, Frenkel-Brunswick and Sanford 1945). The reasons this is true are not entirely clear. Does racism attract the unintelligent or do the unintelligent default into racist mentalities? An exploration of this phenomenon can be most informative.

  89. Doodlebug Shayne says:

Many studies have explored the psychology of racism and the familial and social backgrounds of racists. Some interesting generalities can be extracted from these studies, including the fact that racists tend to be conservatives, conformists, Republicans, and hypochondriacs. … But, why would they tend to be hypochondriacs? Perhaps they blame their body parts for imaginary illnesses in the same way they blame parts of society for imaginary social illnesses.

The same way they feel that the white man is being picked on.

  91. Realness says:

    Doodlebug-

the hypochondriac statement is really interesting– maybe it’s anger at external events out of their control- even as close to home as the body, which can be sadly externalized as ‘working against’ oneself.

The anger could come from confusion and frustration at an inability to understand the world. I don’t think it would come as any surprise if racism was proven to be in some basic part of the brain- reptilian or mammalian- that part that is tribalistic for survival. What’s sad is that the rational brain is championed to have overcome so much of the animal, but not this quite yet, huh?

Anyone care to explain to me how someone so blatantly and graphically racist, still posts here?

I’m not in favor of banishment per se, but geez flippin’ louise, sometimes, it’s best just to swipe the idiocy from the thread.
I mean, it serves no purpose, and it sure as hell does not allow for intelligent discussions!

But, why would they tend to be hypochondriacs? Perhaps they blame their body parts for imaginary illnesses in the same way they blame parts of society for imaginary social illnesses.

Maybe it’s because they are more easily disgusted, or maybe because conservatism is a mental paradigm fraught with negative ideas, feelings and ways of responding to stimuli?…

Perhaps with a few less led paint chips (lead poisoning lowers IQ) and less home schooling we would have less bigots and less Republicans.

WV got nothing on NM. We got a state cookie and a state question! How about them road apples?

In all fairness to people with disability—coal mining takes a monster toll on the health of anyone near a coal mining operation. I presume that the miners have a significantly shorter life span than average. If someone with black lung wants to sit on the porch and watch the neighbors drive by, then more power to them, it’s better for their health than lying in bed.

Yes, there was a magic thread in which Merdad was completely ignored. It gave me the same feeling I get when I have to keep a straight face and I feel like laughing out loud. Felt like I could just float away. It looked comical.

And to be honest, it’s unfair to the rest of the conservatives who come here to engage us. While they may be accused of soft racism, they’re not “Aryan Warriors” like this guy. Having him here agreeing with them is just an unearned advantage for the rest of us. I’d rather beat ‘em fair and square.

I’m amazed that there are so many bigots willing to express their ignorance and prejudice concerning the people of West Virginia.

And since some people seem to be a bit uninformed about what coal is, try a bit of home schooling and educate yourself.

    This from about.com:

Coal differs from every other kind of rock in that it is made of organic carbon: the actual remains, not just mineralized fossils, of dead plants.

Coal geologists study coal just the way other geologists study other rocks. But instead of talking about the minerals that make up the rock (because there are none, just bits of organic matter), coal geologists refer to the macerals, of which there are three groups: inertinite, liptinite, and vitrinite.

    You can learn more at:

FYI… West Virginia was created by Abe Lincoln as a result of the Civil War. With only about 18 months of formal education, the rest came from home schooling. His Mother, Nancy Hanks, was born in what is now Mineral County, West Virginia.

Here’s a chart of official state minerals, rocks, stones, and gemstones. You’ll notice that Kentucky has aleady had coal listed as a state mineral since 1998, with the state rock being Kentucky Agate. You’d think that a bit of “home schooling” would have turned that up before West Virginny actually drew up their legislation.

The U.S. didn’t have public education in Lincoln’s time. There was no such thing. You know, he also never drove an automobile, so I guess that means they’re bad too, huh?

    Now renamed Rock County, WV?

  107. dixie blood says:

Sooo…this very special state rock, coal, and the “state” that made it a very special rock is encouraging everyone to destroy all of it as quickly as possibly by burning it all up.

Only in WV… would would you find people burning thier state rocks.

It appears that in WV ignorance is the largest natural resource.

It should be illegal. It’s a killing us.

I knew he would still be wallpapering this thread. I take the Holocaust seriously enough not to wear it out. I am not nor have I ever been anti-semitic. I’m agnostic. Why in the world would I be anti-semitic? The assertion that I would “forget” or approve of any persecution and systematic murder is anti-social.
