Franchise defends its ‘Global warming is baloney’ signs: Burger King is acting like ‘cockroaches.’

The Memphis Flyer recently caught multiple local Burger King restaurants sporting big “Global Warming is Baloney” signs. The Burger King corporation quickly distanced itself from the controversy: “The two restaurants where these signs appeared are independently owned and operated and were not authorized to display this statement. The signs have since been removed.” However, Leo Hickman of the Guardian reports that many of the signs are still up, and the corporation in charge of the franchises — a Memphis-based company called the Mirabile Investment Corporation — is defending its position:

Media attempts to contact MIC to establish why it was taking an apparently defiant stance were rebuffed, but the Guardian managed to grill MIC’s marketing president, John McNelis.

“I would think [Burger King] would run from any form of controversy kinda like cockroaches when the lights get turned on,” said Mr McNelis. “I’m not aware of any direction that they gave the franchisee and I don’t think they have the authority to do it.”

McNelis added: “The [restaurant] management team can put the message up there if they want to. It is private property and here in the US we do have some rights. … Burger King can bluster all they want about what they can tell the franchisee to do, but we have free-speech rights in this country so I don’t think there’s any concerns.”

Susan Robison, vice president of corporate communications for BKC, responded that “BKC has guidelines for signage used by franchisees [which] were not followed. We have asked the franchisee to remove the signage and have been told that the franchisee will comply.”

No it’s not. “change” allows for cooling too which is less “precise” than “warming” which has an explicit direction to it. “Warming” is more precise.

  28. Xisithrus says:

Its odd they use baloney when Burger King, that I know of, doesnt sell baloney.

“I would think [Burger King] would run from any form of controversy kinda like cockroaches when the lights get turned on,” said Mr McNelis. “I’m not aware of any direction that they gave the franchisee and I don’t think they have the authority to do it.”

Actually, Mr. McNelis, they have every right in the world to do so. You may own (or lease) the building, but you don’t own the name of the business. You are licensing the Burger King name and they have every right in the world to decide how that name will be used. Think about it, Mr. McNelis. Would you have had the legal right to open up a restaurant and call it a “Burger King”, use their logos and menu items, without having to have their approval? Obviously you use their name within their guidelines. If you don’t like it, close down your restaurants and open them up under another name.

We will have to disagree on this one, dixie. Where I live the most drastic “change” is very severe winters. “Climate change” allows for the various ways the over all warming affects the planet.

  37. Fred says:

And your list proves this how, exactly? Is your argument that (for example) the Gulf of Mexico is polluted, but that’s not broken? Or is it that Texas and Louisiana are doing a bang-up job cleaning the Gulf up so that federal intervention is unnecessary? Or maybe the list has no relationship at all to your claim?

I really hope that you don’t think you have a point with any of your comments. They aren’t very thoughtful, that’s for sure.

BTW, next time you want to complain about the feds and centralized government, you might want to think about the fact that everyone you voted in since Reagen has done nothing but expand federal government and its power; especially over the state’s rights.

Keep preaching your Republican small government mantra though, at least dems get what they vote for. Looks like you might be happier as a Libertarian. Just realize the fact that you look like a hypocrite, and none of your arguments are going to be taken seriously in a forum where people, quite obviously, understand the history of government and politics far beyond your comprehension.

“The earth heats up and cools down, its a cycle that has been going on for billions of years. Go take a 1st grade science class libs. -JBB”

In first grade science class they teach you that. Then in second grade you learn that there hasn’t been 6.5 billion people on the earth for billions of years, and that’s why its a problem now. I think you probably learn that in second grade social studies too.

Oh, and the fact that the changes have been deviating from the normal glacial/interglacial cycles that occur every 40,000 and 100,000 years, which poses the main problem. I think you learn that in college though, obviously a place you’ve never been.

Are you suggesting that these guys could have put up on the sign “We serve white people only” and Burger King HQ wouldn’t have done a thing about it? I know that other groups or organizations would have given them a hard time, possibly even the federal government. But are you suggesting that franchise owners actually have that much freedom to make their licensing companies look bad?

  51. spencers mom says:

    tokin librul Says:

True, but BK needs to walk a fine line here because the more the general public learns about the crap in fast food, the less likely they are to eat it and BK’s survival depends on peddling to the dumb and ignorant, i.e. the GNOP base, who are the only Americans to believe the idiots still trying to debunk the climate change science.

Not to blanket judgment or anything, but the conservatives who come here posting arguments like this remind me of my 5 year old nephew trying to make a point about something. So scattered and illogical that it just doesn’t even warrant a debate. Another reason that every time I flip by Fox News I puke a little bit in my mouth.

Hey, you must have missed the part of my comment where I said that all of your candidates since Reagen have done nothing but expand federal government. Did you have a rebuttal for that or does your brain hurt too much? I know, I know, its easy to argue about things you think you understand, but its not easy to defend something you don’t understand at all.

Better luck next time. Honestly, I’d switch parties unless you want to go through life knowing that you can’t logically defend the blatant lies that your party has thrived off of for years. The sad part is that the Republican party still has a following of pitchfork carrying dimwits like yourself who think they back up what they preach. Good honest conservatives? You mean like this guy who moved here from Texas and after they removed his dead body from his home they found dirty bomb materials he was going to use to blow up President Obama with? Those good conservatives?…

Gore is not a scientist only a modern daly snake oil salesman. Remember liberals in the 60’s mantra of “question authority”. If BK corporate says no to the sign, it means the franchise holder is legally obligated to take it down. Just like they can’t change the name of the Whopper to Big Eddie’s Yummy Lamb burger. They signed the contract.

Y’know, it wasn’t until I really started studying the history of the first years of the Republic that it struck me how bizarre it is that the premier right-wing legal activist organization calls itself the “Federalist Society”.

The Federalists of old — Washington, Adams, Hamilton — were in favor of a strong federal government while the Democratic-Republicans like Jefferson and Burr favored a states-rights approach.

You actually have no idea where most of the pollution comes from. Basically you want to use more land area per-person and produce more polution per-person, and if anybody points out that you’re being unfair you throw a hissy fit.

The reason that cities tend to be liberal is that people in cities have to live near other people. That means learning to coexist with people who may not look like you or think like you. That means having some awareness of the impact of your actions on your neighbors – because you actually have neighbors. Conservatives tend towards rural areas because living far away from anyone gives you the illusion of omnipotence over your environment and breeds xenophobia.

I am writing to inform you that an anonymous person on the internet, who posts under the username “Progressive Veteran” is most certainly NOT a real veteran, and I want you to arrest him for impersonating a veteran, which must be illegal because veterans are way better than unionized police scum, and impersonating a policeman is illegal. I can tell he’s not a veteran because he has liberal views, and the Army Times mail-in polls regularly tell me that servicemen with liberal views are a myth. Please throw him in the brig as soon as you catch up to him. He sometimes posts at thinkprogress.org, a den of communist activity. If you go there, you can catch him the next time he tries to slip through that intertube.

It worked so well that there was an electoral tie for the presidency between Jefferson and Burr, and there’s good evidence that jefferson’s whispering campaign accusing Burr of politicking in the Congress to throw the contest his way is actually a very successful example of what republicans specialize in today; blame your opponent of the things you are guilty of.

Anyway, it was an uneasy alliance, but the two were aligned in 1800.

Really? You’ve had over 300 comments to come up with this answer, so I take it you did finally go to Google for help. Sooo…Tell us what your duties were, where you were stationed, and how long you were in as a “master gunnery sgt.” that you didn’t bother to capitalize.

  286. angels81 says:

Go Liberty: Master Gunnery Sgt. Who, when and were? Should be an easy question for a gunnery sgt.

a master gunnery sgt. can be, for example, the motor transport chief for an entire marine expeditionary force numbering 25,000-45,000 marines. it’s a tough rank with a lot of chevrons.
    June 7th, 2009 at 5:59 pm

“For example”? An answer like that is made by someone who wasn’t a “master gunnery sgt.” and is observing the Google screen at the moment as to what one does.

Freedom of speech is a cornerstone of our democracy and we shouldn’t belittle it when the speech is speech we don’t like. If only the speech we like is free, then there is no free speech.

This issue however has nothing to do with free speech.

Anyone who’s ever owned a franchise knows you own it insofar as you abide by the terms of the franchise. It’s not your store. It’s your “franchise”. And that means you are subjected to the terms of the franchise as outlined by the corporation from which you purchased the franchise from.

And since Burger King as a corporate entity would likely never grab a third rail issue such as Global Warming, on either side, then clearly this franchise has violated the terms of their franchise and needs to take down the stupid signs.

    Funny.

Most doctors, psychologists and anthropologists would be quick to point out that those of “higher intellect” would be the last ones to “poke fun at the slow kid”.

That’s the behavior of the mediocre and below average crowd.

Higher intellect always equates to a higher level of empathy.

  369. wizard2000 says:

Someone putting up a “Global Warming is Baloney” sign is equivalent to their putting up a sign proclaiming “Death to America” or “Death to the World”…or at least, death to the United States and the World that we know today.

But then this does seem to be a recurring theme of conservatives in general and Republicans in particular (although conservative Democrats share this same attitude, this Death Wish).

For instance, certain economic safeguards were put in place after the Great Depression to avert another financial catastrophe like that from happening again, certain economic safeguards that conservatives wanted to “kill” since their inception, with the “killing” of Glass-Steagal being the top trophy “kill.” But Glass-Steagal was just one of many Depression Era regulations that conservatives wanted to “kill.” Consumer Protection Laws…”kill.” Mortgage Protections…”kill.”

DLC conservatives in the second Clinton administration, as they looked forward to leaving the White House and finding a job on Wall Street, worked with the conservative Republicans running Congress, and “killed” Glass-Steagal, as well as other Depression Era regulations…with the Bush administration completing the “killing” process…and now the Obama administration is trying to clean up all the mess created by this regulation “killing” frenzy.

Why does this all sound so familiar, especially where Global Warming is concerned?

“Killing” environmental regulations. Delaying the implementation of environmental regulations. And lying, lying, lying, trying every trick possible to slow-walk any response to Global Warming…until it is too late, in my opinion, until one too many tipping points has been reached and surpassed, until our oncoming conservative-generated economic meltdown morphs into a worldwide Global Warming meltdown…which is why I say these conservatives have a Death Wish, no matter how much they shout that they are pro-life. Facts prove otherwise.

There is NOT a consensus on global warming, not even close.

Tim I have some advice, don’t go to your liberal friends house. Cut off all relations to liberals, they are not our friends. These people would send you to the gas chambers if they could get away with it.

And so we see the advantages of not talking with those boring college professors and instead focusing on things like the never ending mundane football statistics.

Because then we get to fabricate things like “liberals” would “send you to the gas chambers”, instead of realizing that it was the Nazi’s who sent the people to the gas chambers. You remember the Nazi’s, right? They were the far right conservatives who were anti-Semites, Anti-Communism and Anti Liberal both economically and politically.

Not to mention that the majority of the governors in this country who send people to the gas chamber, are conservatives.

  412. WAYNEBRO says:

The Earth’s climate has changed throughout history. Just in the last 650,000 years there have been seven cycles of glacial advance and retreat, with the abrupt end of the last ice age about seven thousand years ago, marking the beginning of the modern climate era —and of human civilization. Most of these changes are attributed to the very small changes in the Earth’s orbit changing the amount of solar energy the Earth receives.

The current warming trend is of particular significance because most of it is very likely human-induced and proceeding at a rate that is unprecedented in the past 1,300 years.1

Earth-orbiting satellites and other technological advances have enabled scientists to see the big picture, collecting many different types of information about our planet and its climate on a global scale. Studying these climate data collected over many years reveal the signals of a changing climate.

Certain facts about Earth’s climate are not in dispute:

    * The heat-trapping nature of carbon dioxide and other gases was demonstrated in the mid-19th century. Their ability to affect the transfer of infrared energy through the atmosphere is the scientific basis of many JPL-designed instruments, such as AIRS. Increased levels of greenhouse gases must cause the Earth to warm in response.

    * Ice cores drawn from Greenland, Antarctica, and tropical mountain glaciers show that the Earth’s climate responds to changes in solar output, in the Earth’s orbit, and in greenhouse gas levels. They also show that in the past, large changes in climate have happened very quickly, geologically-speaking: in tens of years, not in millions or even thousands.

Scientific evidence for warming of the climate system is unequivocal.

I’ve got to go with Waynebro on the confrontation.

As much as it may be difficult to understand why someone doesn’t believe in what you believe, leaving it unaddressed, doesn’t change the belief.

Addressing it doesn’t help, either, especially if the other person is totally uninterested in learning anything that refutes their assumptions and beliefs. You can argue until you’re blue in the face with someone who is a fundamentalist Christian that the Earth is more than 6,000 years old but it’s an utter waste of energy.

People who deny (a) that global warming is a reality or (b) that human behavior is a factor in global warming keep trotting out the same reports, claiming that “scientists” don’t support the case (and claiming it’s all about “liberals” or Al Gore) — while either ignoring or not realizing that many of the “scientists” listed have since denied knowing anything about the “report” or have no connection at all to climatology. These are the people who keep thinking that “meteorologist” is the same as “climatologist.”

None of which really addresses the motivation of trolls hanging out on a liberal blog.

  421. The Moderate Squad says:

Why would a troll hang out at a liberal blog? They’re either ignorant enough to think they will be viewed as intelligent and turn liberals into Reich-wingers, or they’re just gluttons for punishment. Plus, I guess hanging out here is easier than being part of the solution…

  422. dbadass says:

Writing in the report, Gen Zinni, a former commander of US Central Command, says: “It’s not hard to make the connection between climate change and instability, or climate change and terrorism.”

“Or we will pay the price later in military terms. And that will involve human lives. There will be a human toll.”

So whats the purpose of the blog then?

Why are you here? Why would anyone be here?

To discuss only those ideas which agree with our own?

I realize it is a challenging, painstaking process of confronting lies and falsehoods from the right, tit for tat, day in and day out, but the alternative is to give them strength, momentum and a degree of credence to the uninformed and or middle of the fence visitors who are not as up on these issues as is the average liberal or progressive blogger.

Burying ones head in the sand and pretending it’s not there, i.e. ignoring it, won’t make it go away. And it also won’t make it diminish in content or momentum.

All one has to do to see that is to look at the time periods in these threads where no one challenges the trolls. Their comments grow in number and severity until they are smacked down by the facts.

Those who refuse to confront lies and evil men ensure that lies and evil will grow in strength.

The only way to deal with it, is to confront it.

  427. WAYNEBRO says:

    backup Says:

Minds are, however, capable of change. I think the problem is, that most times the effort to change them requires too much patience or effort and doesn’t seem worth the trouble.

On this (as on many things) we differ. Some minds are capable of change, others never will change regardless of how evidence. There was, in fact, a study a few years ago that established that producing evidence that confounded beliefs actually ended up reinforcing those beliefs if they were important to the individual.

Some stubborn individuals can change, but only when faced with cataclysmic forces. And the people who are the most adamant about one view are the most closed-minded when they suddenly reverse entirely (like religious converts, or the neocons that were the most intolerant Far Left until their own conversions).

I know that you spend much of your time trying to claim some sort of middle ground, but I’ve rarely seen evidence that you have actually changed your mind about anything and, frankly, there are a great many people who aren’t even as flexible as you.

I do not limit this to the Right, trust me. I’ve come much closer to punching out some pompous vegetarian Leftie than you can imagine.

  429. WAYNEBRO says:

And remember. It’s not about changing the minds of the mindless trolls who shill for their right wing masters in here.

As the name “mindless trolls” imply, they have no minds in which to change.

It’s about the thousands of visitors to these sites each and every day, who never comment, post or even log in. And if you look at the webstats some time, you’ll see they are ample.

People visit these sites every day without ever saying a word, and many of them are middle of the road, or uninformed on issues of the day (which is often why they visit).

If they see the arguments of the right, posted on a liberal blog without any counter argument, it is likely that many will assume there is no counter to the argument, and move on.

In the classroom, false arguments are confronted and discredited.

In the scientific laboratories, false theories and hypotheses are confronted and discredited.

And it should be no different here.

  430. WAYNEBRO says:

And if you’re too lazy or tired of confronting the falsehoods of the right in these “open blogs”, then perhaps its time to start on of your own, or find one where the FREE exchange of ideas and debate, is discouraged.

Instead of encouraged, as it is here.

gummitch. I’ll be honest with you. I haven’t changed much. But, here are some positions of mine that have changed or moderated in the past 3 years (obviously in part due to engaging this site).

    - Waterboarding is torture.

    - The detainees at Gitmo deserve a speedy trial. (we cannot hold them indefinitely).

    - Veterans haven’t been served that well by Republicans.

    - The war in Iraq was a mistake. (I still give the Bush administration the benefit of the doubt in many regards that others here won’t).

    - Barack Obama is the ideal leader to help deal with Muslim animosity towards the U.S.

    - The marketplace is not a perfect regulator. It benefits from some amount of regulation.

    - Whether it was FDR’s New Deal or WWII, massive government spending most likely ended the Great Depression. (and that idea is relevant to today’s stimulus efforts)

I’m still not a huge Global Warming proponent, but my view has changed from relative opposition to supporting green initiatives that don’t have much marketplace consequence and working harder to understand the benefits of green initiatives regardless of whether they effect the climate.

I’m sure there are more. Some minds will change. But, I suggest they change very slowly.

  444. ralph the wonder locust says:

Okay, let’s examine wipey’s evidence with a closer eye, shall we?

It appears that his source is James Inhofe’s blog.

It does indeed seem to suggest that there have only been 528 papers published on the question of climate change. Does this make sense to anybody? 528 papers represent ALL of the published research on climate change?

In 2004 another survey was done which tested the acceptance of the theory in peer-reviewed published work:

(This acceptance) was tested by analyzing 928 abstracts, published in refereed scientific journals between 1993 and 2003, and listed in the ISI database with the keywords “climate change” (9).

The 928 papers were divided into six categories: explicit endorsement of the consensus position, evaluation of impacts, mitigation proposals, methods, paleoclimate analysis, and rejection of the consensus position. Of all the papers, 75% fell into the first three categories, either explicitly or implicitly accepting the consensus view; 25% dealt with methods or paleoclimate, taking no position on current anthropogenic climate change. Remarkably, none of the papers disagreed with the consensus position.

A computer scientist named Tim Lambert writing at scienceblogs does an analysis of the study that wipey offers so casually.

He likens it to a similar effort directed at the 2004 study I noted, in which a skeptic originally claimed 34 papers rejecting the theory but under scrutiny eventually reduced his claim to a single paper.

Lambert finds a similar circumstance here, in which the seven that wipey found so compelling is reduced to three:

The three that do reject the consensus are Gerhard, which was published in the American Association of Petroleum Geologists Bulletin; Shaviv arguing for cosmic rays, which doesn’t explain how they could make a difference over the past 50 years when the cosmic rayflux hasn’t changed over that period; and Zhen-Shan and Xian, which is just a rubbish paper that should not have been published.

    The comments are interesting too.

    wipey? Your response?

“The Global Humanitarian Forum, headed by former UN Secretary General Kofi Annan, released a 103-page report estimating that ‘every year climate change leaves over 300,000 people dead, 325 million people seriously affected, and economic losses of US $125 billion.’ The report contains so many extrapolations derived from guesswork based on estimates inferred from unsuitable data sets that you have to ask some serious questions about the methodology.” -Richard Cable, BBC Climate Change blog, 1 June 2009

“Mr Annan said the report could never be as rigorous as a scientific study. Why can’t the work produced by the GHF be “as rigorous as a scientific study”? Well, one answer is that scientific studies on this topic simply don’t give the desired answers.” – Roger Pielke, Jr., Prometheus, 1 June 2009

Another Global Warming Quote of the Day!

“It is obvious that anthropogenic global warming is not science at all, because a scientific theory makes non-obvious predictions which are then compared with observations that the average person can check for himself. As we both know from our own observations, AGW theory has spectacularly failed to do this. The theory has predicted steadily increasing global temperatures, and this has been refuted by experience. NOW the global warmers claim that the Earth will enter a cooling period. In other words, whether the ice caps melt, or expand — whatever happens — the AGW theorists claim it confirms their theory. A perfect example of a pseudo-science like astrology.” – Frank Tipler, mathematical physicist at Tulane University

I say let ‘em keep their signs. I also say if you disagree with them. EAT SOMEWHERE ELSE!If people with a little common sense stay away, the signs will be removed soon enough.

I guess I’m just hallucinating that I’m making my self clear, with all the caveats, exemptions, nods to other methods being useful, calling for an experiment on one thread…

    A computer scientist

    Nuff said…LOL!

Yeah, I thought you might pounce on that… problem is, wipey… this computer scientist didn’t analyze the climate data for the validity of its conclusions.

He analyzed the contents of the reports for statistical representation. His status as a computer scientist is a pretty good qualification for this task. You made the claim that “Less Than Half of all Published Scientists Endorse Global Warming Theory”. That’s a statistical claim, not a climatalogical one.(I know you probably don’t understand the difference, but intelligent people do.)

But it’s good to know that you recognize that when analyzing actual climatological data, computer scientists (or economists or social scientists or biologists…) really don’t carry a lot of weight.

Shall we examine again the list of scientists (and their degrees) who signed the petition you guys always trumpet?

Tim how could you marry a liberal?

I’m just a lowly construction worker and she is a PHD. But, somehow between our voting differences we have managed to raise 4 daughters and 1 son. Perhaps it is because I attend her events and she goes to football games with me. We both agree that we need to insure a clean environment for our children. I’m not convinced carbon dioxide is a pollutant and I don’t believe that we can change the climate. But I am confused why this debate is so brutal? Our country needs a long term energy strategy and one that makes us more dependent on American resources and less foreign dependence. It is apparent our politicians can’t get a grip to solve these problems as they are locked in biased party debate. Perhaps the rule should be that only liberals and conservatives should marry each other?

I don’t know you or your positions, but if you are a conservative who is capable of discussing issues reasonably, I welcome you to the community. We desperately need some.

A couple of thoughts: carbon dioxide is clearly NOT a pollutant. The tactic of allowing it to be regulated as one is a political maneuver and may be a valuable one.

Also, we already DO the change the climate. Ever hear of “urban heat islands”? Human development of high-density cities with a heavy concentration of industrial output, energy use, human activity and vehicle emissions is well known to raise the surrounding temperature measurably. This is a small-scale impact on the climate, and if one considers the Butterfly Effect, the ability of man’s activities to affect the climate on a larger scale should be clear. The path from that point is less clear, but your belief that we can’t change the climate is clearly mistaken.

Actually, Global Warming is beef. and chicken & pork & turkey. That’s what is more to blame than the auto industry, the consumption of animals. But mostly Human Overpopulation is the root cause of our environmental problems. Our population is the #1 cause of species going extinct at record rates. Enough about global warming. It’s like talking about the fever you have from contracting H.I.V. Human overpopulation is the cause.
