Far right feels betrayed and outraged by Cheney’s ‘backhanded pro-gay approach.’

Bishop Harry Jackson In a speech last week, Vice President Cheney gave some of his strongest comments yet in favor of same-sex marriage, saying that “people ought to be free to enter into any kind of union they wish.” The right wing is now furious at Cheney. Washington-area pastor Bishop Harry Jackson is a “point man” for far right causes and a “star” of its efforts to “elevate the visibility and voices of politically conservative African American pastors.” In an interview with OneNewsNow, Jackson said that he is “outraged” by Cheney’s remarks:

Jackson, a Washington-area pastor and chairman of the High Impact Leadership Coalition, says ironically, at the same time President Bush “lost steam” on the marriage issue in 2006, Dick Cheney’s daughter Mary was talking openly with the media regarding her lesbian lifestyle.

“I believe that Cheney’s own ambivalence that has now manifested itself into what seems like a backhanded pro-gay approach was one of the things that kept the President [Bush] from going forward,” he contends. “So, I’m outraged that we’ve been promised things by the GOP — specifically by the president — that haven’t really come into fruition.

Keep punishing independent thought, wingnuts. At this rate your party will be small enough to drown in a bathtub before 2012.

    – - I simply do not understand why the overwhelming majority of blacks are so anti-gay. How do they NOT see this as a civil rights issue?

  4. Hoodathunktick says:

Oh puhleeze, CFP. The only reason Dick is in favor of gay is he would like to have his daughter speak to him. If she wasn’t there, Dick would be foaming at the mouth about the evils.

    Betray your daughter? No

The farther the issue got from Cheney’s own home, the less loyalty he demonstrated. The Far Right should not be surprised.

  17. misscoleopteramolly says:

Icicles must be forming in h*ll right now, if Cheney isn’t rabidly right enough for the right wing.

But what do they expect from the man? He has a gay daughter who is in a long-term monogamous relationship, and the couple has a child of their own. Cheney has not disowned his daughter, so I assume he realizes that gay people don’t have cooties.

During the time Cheney was VPOTUS, he did not rail against the “homosexual agenda” as so many other voices on the right have. Oh, he paid service to the entire neocon agenda, and his world view quite frankly scared the crap out of me (still does — I wish the guy would get off the stage), but on the issue of gay rights, he kept very low key.

Even now, his language is quite lukewarm. Yes, he now uses the word “union” instead of “relationship”, but it appears he’s still some distance from being comfortable about terms like “civil union”, “legally recognized union”, and “marriage”. But I guess any wavering from the hard party line is cause for getting bashed from the far right.

You know, watching them eating their own was royally entertaining at first, but now it’s just sad. They’re so clueless, I’m starting to feel sorry for them.

  20. spencers mom says:

Ooops! Somehow that posted without my hitting a thing.

Anyway, Cheney was always far more loyal to the neocons than he ever was to the Christianistas or the Conservatives.

He is a shell of a man, yes, but never tried to portray himself as a friend of the Goddies.

    PEACE

  21. Xisithrus says:

Jackson pushes that wedge hard, denouncing abortion as “black genocide” and decrying what he calls the “hijacking” of the civil rights movement by Satan-inspired gay-rights activists

I see, Jackson is basically saying that Cheney is inspired by Satan.

  22. chiroptera toasterhead says:

    ConservativeForProgress Says:

Why do you generalize what one man says as “the Right Wing?” That is a very dishonest approach. A growing number of Conservatives agree with Dick Cheney and support gay marriage or gay civil unions.

    June 8th, 2009 at 4:52 pm

Growing, perhaps, but not very quickly. You’re only up to 11% of the far right, and 33% of the moderate right.

I believe that means that it’s still statistically honest to say that the majority of conservatives and the vast majority of the far right oppose gay marriage.

  23. ElBruce says:

    ConservativeForProgress Says:

A growing number of Conservatives agree with Dick Cheney and support gay marriage or gay civil unions.

And that’s happening because we keep pointing and laughing at the ones who don’t. It’s the same tactic that’s working on every issue. Including the ones you’re still on the wrong side of.

  24. Trittydi says:

They are on the losing side of this issue and they know it. They know it is only a matter of time. Let them be angry with Cheney – it means nothing. In the end – he’s one of their own and they love him for it.

Cheney’s views will have no impact on the issue as a whole — they are losing and it is only matter of time.

  25. Zooey says:

    Cheney isn’t “pro-gay” or “pro-anything else.”

    _____________

Exactly. He’s a corporate conservative, not a values conservative. But he also knew that he couldn’t maintain the position of power he needed to push through all the corporate goodies he wanted without appeasing the value voters. Which is why we’re only hearing about his support of gay marriage now, when he’s no longer electable.

That’s when I was in the Army, and I remember then-SecDef Cheney bosting about how much he was able to cut the military “down to size” after Gulf War 1.

Maybe Al Gore is planning to pull a Ross Perot.

Just prior to the 1979 Iranian Revolution, the government of Iran imprisoned two EDS employees in a contract dispute. Perot organized and sponsored a successful rescue. The rescue team was led by retired U.S. Army Special Forces Colonel Arthur D. (’Bull’) Simons. When the team couldn’t find a way to extract their two prisoners, they decided to wait for a mob of pro-Ayatollah revolutionaries to storm the jail and free all 10,000 inmates, many of whom were political prisoners. The two prisoners then connected with the rescue team, and the team spirited them out of Iran via a risky border crossing into Turkey.

    I never knew that story.

I dunno, pretty badass if you ask me.

    I stand corrected, thanks.

    Alejandro Says:

So basically, Al Gore is part of the policy of silence on this.

In the bit of browsing I did on this I saw a number of references citing the possibility that he might be sent to negotiate their release. Public statements condeming this and that would undercut any possibility of actually getting them out. But you don’t really care about that, do you? Y’all still think that the job of politicians is to wave big sticks and threaten other countries, rather than to get any actual results. There’s absolutely nothing to be gained by public finger-wagging, and possibly much to lose. We’re talking about real lives here, not your pretend political posturing.

when a republican cuts defense spending you can rest assured they arent cutting defense capabilities. demlibs cut both spending and capabilities. they have a very nasty agenda.

Did you learn that from your George Patton DVD Collection?…while you were trying to use your Blackberry on eharmony.com?…they cut defense spending to enable them to give no-bid contracts to private contractors, which has cut the capabilities and contributed to a wholesale rip-off of the taxpayer…sucks to be you…

P.S. how are those multiple personalities doing? Never mind, Please do not R.S.V.P.

You know, it almost sounded as if that whiny bearing sound was forming words — it almost sounded like “Republican Good. Democrat Bad.”

But there I go, anthropomorphizing again.

More wisdom from the George Patton Deluxe DVD Collection….sad, really…No R.S.V.P. required…

Wow, you really are a presumptuous prick. I insulted no one, but you presumed to know everything about my opinions and then proceeded to berate those opinions that you dreamed up all by yourself. Congratulations.

  108. Alejandro says:

And Al Gore was doing nothing of the sort. He wasn’t lifting a finger about this.

    http://gawker.com/5282163/al-gores-busy-making-bad-jokes-while-his-currenttv-journalists-are-still-trapped-in-north-korea

Al Gore was at the 92nd St. Y earlier this week, making jokes about drug addicts. Meanwhile, as of this morning, imprisoned Current.TV journalists Laura Ling and Euna Lee – Gore’s employees – are facing further hearings in North Korea.

Gore has been silent on the issue, Current.TV told their people to not say a word about it. It’s no less disconcerting that Gore was, according to the Page Six item, at a fundraiser for Andrew Cuomo earlier in the day, instead of working – doing something, anything – to free his employees from what’s probably the worst work-related trip of all time.

Your deserter in chief was able to invade Afghanistan because the military he inherited from President Clinton was top notch and ready to go. Unlike the military that President Obama inherited from george the deserter. Are you going to wait for the General Zinni DVD set to find out what Iraq was Like? It’s obvious that you’re too much of a chickenhawk coward to do your patriotic duty, after all, you are a republican…

Black Conservative preachers are no less bigoted than White Conservative Preachers. HAH! They destroy and wilt the grass they walk upon. Pathetic, mean spirited little worms with a Bible in one hand, and pistol in the other.

Bigotry combined with lack of education ‘hard feelings’ are the most dangerous. IS it time for a white liberal backlash against these Black Conservatives? YES! YOU BET IT IS!

  113. Zooey says:

    Racists abound…

    I’m looking at YOU, drewinsf.

Far right feels betrayed and outraged by Cheney’s ‘backhanded pro-gay approach.’

Are they saying that Cheney is into giving “Reach-arounds”?

  115. wiseass.org says:

How dare people change the institution of marriage to allow black men to marry white women. Or white men to marry black women.

Guess this bigoted cretin Harry Jackson only thinks civil rights are for ’straight’ people.

  117. The Moderate Squad says:

How bad is the GOP getting when Darth Cheney isn’t even right-wing enough anymore? It really is starting to look like Limbaugh will be the last one willing to call himself a Republican.

Im so sick of debating this here. Lets face the facts, in 08 people decided they were against gay marriage. Even in california. Can you libs just shut up about it now?
    _____________________________________________________________

Oh yes — THAT should settle it. Just like when most of white America was in favor of racial segregation (or didn’t care as long as “negroes kept their place and didn’t get uppity”), black Americans should have just shut up about it, since the “people” had spoken.

Yep — all those protest marches, sit-ins, and singing “We Shall Overcome” was such a waste of time…

  120. joygreenmcgann says:

Of course Dick Cheney says gay marriage should me legal. You know why? Because like every other member of the Bush Administration, if supporting the situation somehow furthers your own personal goals (you know, like the happiness of your daughter), then that is an inalienable right. AS LONG AS YOUR SELF-INTEREST IS INVOLVED, YOU ARE FOR IT. WHEN THAT CHANGES FOR YOU, YOU ARE AGAINST IT.

  121. justme says:

    ‘backhanded pro-gay approach.’

Sounds like something one would expect out of Larry Craig in the men’s room.

  122. cdwriteme says:

If Cheney’s kid wasn’t gay, his position would be “shoot them dirty faggots”. He takes one humane position because it affects HIM. I hate that psycho.
