Laura Bush: ‘I’m proud’ of Obama’s pick of Sotomayor, she sounds like ‘a good nominee.’

In an interview with ABC’s Good Morning America, former First Lady Laura Bush offered her endorsement of President Obama’s pick of Sonia Sotomayor to sit on the Supreme Court. “I think she sounds like a very interesting and good nominee,” Bush said. She added:

As a woman, I’m proud there might be another woman on the Court. So we’ll see what happens, but I wish her well.

Watch it:

The right-wing base has not been nearly as gracious about Obama’s pick of a woman to sit on the Court, taking the opportunity to propagate insulting sexist attacks. RNC Chairman Michael Steele said, “God help you if you’re a white male coming before her bench.” Karl Rove likened her to a “schoolmarm.” And G. Gordon Libby said, “Let’s hope that the key conferences aren’t when she’s menstruating or something.”

As if her opinion is needed , or even semi-viable/valid ; look at her choice of a spouse …………

The Bush family are sounding surprisingly Obama friendly. Will the wingnuttery go after Laura’s statement? Something’s up.

Laura bush? That’s tantamount to an indictment; I mean, look who she purposely chose to marry….

    ..maybe she was drunk…

  4. Lora says:

You mean Laura Bush hasn’t had a tete-a-tete with Newt?

  5. CageyCretin says:

And G. Gordon Libby said, “Let’s hope that the key conferences aren’t when she’s menstruating or something.”

That’s right, ‘cuz women go all crazy and stuff during “that time”, you know.

We need to institute laws that re-establish the “unclean” shack behind the house for women during the ‘crazy time’.

Did Libby harbor this same concern over Palin when she was going to be a “heartbeat away from the presidency”? Or is this just an expedient attack based on an ancient and uneducated concept that dehumanized the female based on a reproductive cycle?

Rove hates education? well, we knew that. Modern Consevatives hate education.

Steele — nice fear mongering to the white male base of your constituency. But does the invocation of a diety help? Does your argument… well, do you HAVE an argument? Or is it just the whole “be afraid” angle, and you’ll let us know later why we should have been afraid? I suppose there is clear evidence of her rulings that indicate that she is predisposed to rule in all instances against while males, regardless of the evidence brought forward. And, to boot, I suppose that her single voice will be the ultimitae direction of the SCOTUS.

  6. ljm says:

My God these (R) clowns are desperate. If things they said 8 years ago or whenever are held against them we would have only one party. Not bad, actually! Stick a mic in their face and expect crap. At least Laura likes the fact that Sonia is a woman who seems to be a good candidate.

You can tell who was the “brains” in the Bush family…lol

Did She clear that statement with Boss Hog?

Poor, irrelevant StepfordExFirstLady. I suppose we should pity her.

  9. ralph the wonder locust says:

Using the wingnuts’ standard form of “logic”, that means Laura Bush is a sexist, doesn’t it?

  10. CageyCretin says:

And as for Laura — that is your point? That the nomination is a woman? Good to see the republicans remain single-issue voting types. Maybe you could offer some better reasons that this woman is qualified for the position, because gender should not be a consideration at all. She has other qualifications.

  11. PatrioticLiberalChristianMantisReligiosa says:

I don’t care what Laura Bush thinks.

However, I imagine her suppport of Sotomayor is causing many Republicans’ heads to fume. For that, I am grateful.

And let’s hope G. Gordon Libby is just talking and not setting up secret thefts in the middle of the night that send one to jail.

    G. Gordon Libby – convicted criminal & cancervative creep.

When one considers her choice in marriage, it lessens the value of her comments on anyone else.

I think this is all part of an effort to portray dumbya – post presidency – in a more favorable light. To influence history in not viewing him solely as a swaggering, arrogant, warmongerign ignoramus.
Laura Bush is still viewed favorably by the party of NO, so if she manages to throw a few good words toward the Obama nominee, some of the fairy dust might settle on the head of the boy-king as well.

Though, frankly, my dear, Laura, I don’t give a damn!

Really, why, exactly why, is this newsworthy?

In all fairness to Laura, after she killed someone with her car, the fellas weren’t exactly lining up. She had to settle for a drug-addicted drunken idiot, but at least his family had money.

    PEACE

So is Pee off the “Sotomayor is a racist” bandwagon, or is he on the “Sotomayor is a racist but that’s okay because she might be anti-choice” bandwagon?

It can be tricky to keep track of these shifting wingnut positions.

The more I have read of Sotomayor’s unpublished opinions, the more I am convinced that she should be confirmed. There is a substantial chance that she is going to surprise a lot of Liberals on some issues, which is more than Conservatives can hope for from most potential Obama nominees.

I agree with this. Honestly, she’s about as moderate as conservatives could possibly hope for out of Obama. They’re just criticizing her due to an outmoded belief that SCOTUS nomination fights are party unifiers. They should just take what they can get and quit complaining about it.

  21. spencers mom says:

But there’s no upside for the GNOP in allowing the President to continue to be perceived by the public as bright, thoughtful and reasonable. Extremism is the only thing their base understands.

    *******************************************************

I’m strongly inclined to suspect the latter, since I distinctly remember similar remarks being made against Geraldine Ferraro when she was Walter Mondale’s running mate in the 1984 presidential election (I realize that I’m dating myself here — I was in high school at the time). If this were truly an issue for the right wing and not merely another reason to attack a Democratic candidate/appointee, then one would be inclined to think that someone on the right would have voiced similar concerns about Sarah Palin’s candidacy — but at least as far as I know, nobody ever did (or at least never publicly). For all that I know, Liddy may have had similar concerns about her — but if he never voiced them, the fact that he’s choosing to voice such comments publicly when it’s a Democratic candidate/appointee and remain silent when it’s a Republican nevertheless speaks volumes and turns it into an expedient attack no matter what his true feelings may be.

I suspect that Laura Bush is considered to be irrelevent by the GOP, and thus she never received her talking points script. For this reason, she says what she thinks — and as a result she sounds more lucid than the party parrots.

Kudos to you for managing to comment on Laura without any comments about her marriage choice. I think most of us are in agreement that her husband’s no prize, but I’m rather surprised by the hateful slams against her by some of our posters this morning. C’mon, people, get a grip — her comments on GMA don’t merit bashing her.

My problem when dating myself is too much pressure to “put out.” Then I don’t call the next day.

Only here will people slam and insult a Republican who actually agrees with them on something!!! Beautiful!

  30. Bluestocking says:

I for one find it hard to believe that the RNC would willingly permit Laura Bush to publicly contrast the GOP memes concerning Sotomayor without something more to it. The Republicans know, after all, that they really can’t afford to risk alienating the Latino vote in this country — if they do, they can probably kiss goodbye any hopes they might have of winning back majority status in either house of Congress. Since the Republican memes against Sotomayor have been rather scathing, perhaps they’re trotting out Laura Bush — on a morning show, take note, which has a softer and more casual tone than a more traditional news program — in an attempt to diffuse the criticism and defuse potential blowback. Perhaps they’re using Laura Bush specifically because they know she poses no significant threat to the political heavyweights such as Gingrich and Limbaugh and therefore won’t be taken quite as seriously, her only claim to political experience or influence being her marriage to the former President.

  31. MapleStreet says:

Romartin thinks we ougt to whore ourselves and our principles out to anyone who “agrees with us” on something insginificant.

Oh wait — he’s a Republican. of course he thinks that.

Really, what do they say about Democrats on right-wing sites? If Ted Kennedy made a moderately agreeable statement to them and that was reported there, none of the site commenters would bring up other issues they had against him? I find that hard to believe.

    Bluestocking Says:

They have no control or discipline. Nobody’s going to listen to Steele, and even he is unsure what his message is on Sotomayor.

Too late. The damage is done. Because they have no control over their messaging, they can’t keep the “leading voices” that their pols kowtow to from driving Latinos away in droves. A “some of both” message mix won’t prevent that.

Laura is a life long democrat, comes from a family that supported democrats. Her father campaigned for LBJ. You libs are so quick to judge somebody. Maybe she loved bush for the person he is, not his politics?

“Laura Bush: ‘I’m proud’ of Obama’s pick of Sotomayor, she sounds like ‘a good nominee.’”

And looks like Laura’s chip is working. For Laura to endorse Sotomayor for judgeship, this will put the wingnuts into a tailspin.

At some point, the one bleeds into the other. Any person who decides to kill hundreds of thousands of people for a lie, I can’t love, and in fact I justifiably condemn anybody who claims to.

But I don’t see her as a fair game target, based on anything she’s ever said.

  43. cdwriteme says:

Well, Georgey certainly has his reasons to be friendly to the Obama administration (i.e. avoid prosecution for war crimes).

But, I get the feeling Laura is more of a passive supporter of all the GOP lies and hate. That doesn’t make it okay, I just think she probably just married Georgey for the financial comfort.
