Murdoch: ‘If we weren’t fair and balanced, we wouldn’t have the number one network in news.’

Today, News Corp. CEO Rupert Murdoch sat down with Fox News host Neil Cavuto for a softball interview. At one point, Cavuto asked Murdoch if he feels like Rodney Dangerfield — “not getting that respect” — even though Fox is “pretty much the envy of the world right now.” When Cavuto asked about perceptions that Fox isn’t fair and balanced, Murdoch said that those allegations were “obviously not true”:

If we weren’t fair and balanced, we wouldn’t have the number one network in news — by a very wide margin. People believe we’re fair and balanced, and they love us.

Watch it:

There’s no proof that the American public is tuning into Fox because it genuinely believes the network is fair and balanced. After all, a 2008 poll found that just three percent of O’Reilly’s viewers identified themselves as liberal. Twenty-four percent called themselves moderates, and 66 percent said they were conservative. Similar numbers were found in the survey for Hannity’s show. Media watchdog group FAIR has called Fox “the most biased name in news,” and a Fox News vice president admitted that the network’s job was to be “the voice of opposition” to the Obama administration.

Everyone else I know who watches it does so for either the echo chamber effect or for comedic value. If you want to brag about one percent of the population watching on a good night be my guest. If you believe those ratings give you any substantial influence or that the revenue is doing anything more than propping up Murdoch’s sagging print empire then you are delusional enough to take the Fox lineup seriously.

  26. thinkaboutnow says:

Fox News knows it’s out to piss people off and they love it. People like O’Reilly live for that. To conglomerate owners like Murdoch their news outlets are just one of their products trying to reel in customers. Fox has found a successful formula and is running with it.

  31. ElBruce says:

If we weren’t fair and balanced, we wouldn’t have the number one network in news — by a very wide margin
They’re neither fair nor balanced. But here’s the important point – What they do isn’t news. FAUX Noise is to news as pro wrestling is to sports. It’s news-like, but it’s there solely to make conservatives feel good about believing the horrible things they believe.

As such, comparing their ratings to actual news channels is an apples-and-oranges proposition. Compared to entertainment channels (oranges-to-oranges), they’re not doing so great. They might as well call themselves a shopping channel and claim cable supremacy over all of the other shopping networks! It’s easy to “win” when you get to decide who you’re being compared to. But by any objective standard of comparison, as they’re not delivering television journalism, their ratings compared to television journalism networks is completely irrelevant.

Okay what is the correlation to that and conservative political wins? Zero.

Remember 297 million people dont watch FOX

  38. ElBruce says:

The thing that really confuses me is even the most die-hard conservative has to know that FAUX Noise isn’t “fair and balanced.” That’s why they like it so much. If it really was “fair and balanced,” then half of its viewership would be at least center-left, right?

It’s fine if you have your own political channel where they repeat things that you agree with. Go ahead and do that all you want, wingnuts. Have fun. But there’s no need to pretend about it.

I mean, it’s not like we’re going around talking Air America up as being completely centrist and unbiased journalism, because we know that would be a blatant lie.

  44. Bilbo Hussein Baggins says:

They are also NOT the number one network news. They may be the number one network news on cable, but not overall.

Plus, the only reason why they are number one on cable is because CNN and MSNBC split the more intelligent news viewers and because FOX is available on the basic cable lineup and CNN and MSNBC are only available on the premium lineup.

When it is a level playing field and the same number of viewers can access CNN and MSNBC, then and only then can they have bragging rights.

  45. dbadass says:

Good luck with that request, Bilbo. I’m still waiting on JImmy to clarify what point he’s trying to make by crowing about Faux’s ratings.

And yes Fox has a conservative bias, because CNN and MSNBC have a liberal bias! ( cnn is getting a tad better though )

So, CNN and MSNBC split the intelligent news viewers. Add the two together and they have more viewers than Fox.

Besides, Fox has to pay to get their viewers. They pay hotels, bars and restaurants to show only Fox and they pay the cable companies to place Fox in the basic package while MSNBC and CNN are in the premium package (meaning a viewer has to pay more to have them available).

When it’s a level playing field, come back and talk.

  55. calavzma says:

someone might have said this already… i didn’t read the comments.

so if i’m stepping on someones point, i apologize.

the ratings things is very simple.

fox news is by no means fair and balanced. it is incredibly biased. but it is incredibly biased towards the far right.

our nation is incredibly polarized politically so by being the network that panders exclusively to people who already share their world view, they corner the market.

other news networks that deal more in reality and reporting the news, rather than promoting their own world-view, split other rational viewers. The simple fact is because the other networks compete with eachother, they have less ratings.

fox has cornered the far right market…. the moderate and liberal market is split between other much more respected news agencies.

so yes, fox can keep its ratings… but they can also keep their sub-standard journalism.

  56. mackeroon says:

I think us liberals DONT watch as much TV as the CONS do. There are better things to do like rebuilding our lives after the last 8 years. Hence the skewed ratings numbers.

That squeaking again… it sounds a little like someone trying to stuff ten gallons of shit into a five gallon metal bucket…

  62. Bilbo Hussein Baggins says:

Ok, we all know that Fox has a lock on the right wing whack job crowd. And CNN and MSNBC split the more moderate to progressive crowd. So, here are the stats:

In the key 25-54 demographic, FNC expanded upon an already commanding lead in prime time averaging 511,000 viewers (up 19%) compared with CNN’s 343,000 (down 22%) and MSNBC’s 343,000 (up 7%). In total day, FNC averaged 317,000 (up 23%) compared to CNN’s 236,000 (up 7%) and MSNBC’s 180,000 (up 11%).

So, if you add CNN and MSNBC, they out perform Fox every time.

When you have a lock on an audience and other stations split the rest of us, it’s a given that the one with the lock is going to perform better than the ones that split the audience.

Fox News is most balanced according to University study

This is sure to set teeth on edge, veins in the neck to bulge and the media elite to froth at the mouth:

These results are from CMPA’s 2008 ElectionNewsWatch Project. They are based on a scientific content analysis of all 481 election news stories (15 hours 40 minutes of airtime) that aired on the flagship evening news shows on ABC, CBS, NBC and FOX (the first 30 minutes of “Special Report with Brit Hume”) from October 1 through December 15, 2007.

Who’s Fair and Balanced?: Fox News Channel’s coverage was more balanced toward both parties than the broadcast networks were. On FOX, evaluations of all Democratic candidates combined were split almost evenly – 51% positive vs. 49% negative, as were all evaluations of GOP candidates – 49% positive vs. 51% negative, producing a perfectly balanced 50-50 split for all candidates of both parties.

On the three broadcast networks, opinion on Democratic candidates split 47% positive vs. 53% negative, while evaluations of Republicans were more negative – 40% positive vs. 60% negative. For both parties combined, network evaluations were almost 3 to 2 negative in tone, i.e. 41% positive vs. 59% negative.

Who, you’re probably asking, are the CMPA? Glad you asked:

The Center for Media and Public Affairs (CMPA) is a nonpartisan research and educational organization which conducts scientific studies of the news and entertainment media. CMPA election studies have played a major role in the ongoing debate over improving the election process. Our continuing analysis and tabulation of late night political jokes provides a lighter look at major news makers. CMPA is one of the few groups to study the important role the media plays in communicating information about health risks and scientific issues.

Since its formation in 1985, CMPA has emerged as a unique institution that bridges the gap between academic research and the broader domains of media and public policy. Founded by Drs. Robert and Linda Lichter, CMPA has become an acknowledged source of expertise in media analysis.

I listen to both progressive AND conservative radio and TV news, talk shows, etc. and I can tell you without a doubt that it is Fox news and other conservative outlets that present BOTH SIDES of issues.

Nobody on their entire network is a Democrat. Not one person, since they booted Alan Colmes. Shep Smith is as close as it gets to moderate, and he’s center-right. Everybody else there is to the right of him.

When there’s no good news for the Republican party, they stop reporting political news and go straight to missing white women or black male celebrities on trial.

They routinely put two Republicans on the monitor and have them debate with each other as if they’re presenting two sides, even though there aren’t any Democrats.

If by “both sides of issues” you mean whether Obama will turn America into a Communist dictatorship before or after we’re all a smoking crater from terrorist attacks, then sure. But I should inform you there are other sides that you may not be aware of. Because you watch FAUX Noise.

    .

    Tim Vaculik Says:

Anyone who can watch PMSMSNBC and think the news and commentary is NOT totally biased and in the tank for our new President is simply biased themselves and unable to discern objective reality.

Their evening roundup (Maddow/Olbermann/Matthews) is obviously left-leaning. I don’t know about the rest of it. Don’t they also have Scarborough over there?

I’m not going to pretend that MSNBC’s evening lineup is perfectly balanced. Why do you feel the need to pretend about FAUX?

  144. ElBruce says:

Let’s look at your study, Tim…

The study finds that the three broadcast networks combined have given twice as much good press to the Democratic presidential and vice-presidential candidates as they have to the Republicans, and only FOX has given better press to the GOP ticket than to the Democrats.

So giving better press to McCain than Obama is balanced.

They did their study between August 23 and October 24 2008, when McCain was steadily sliding downward in the polls. According to their methodology, reporting that fact would count as a “pro-Obama” story.

So even if a network did nothing but report who’s ahead, this study would count them as being biased for Obama.

For a network to be able to come out (even slightly) pro-McCain under the circumstances that he was facing during that period (”the fundamentals of our economy are strong – wait, WHAT happened to the Dow this morning?!?”) (”I’m suspending my campaing to go to Washington – except I have no plan”) would require for them to be massively tilting the scales in the other direction.

Hmm… where have we heard that before?

Oh yeah — from every wingnut talking head since the Nixon administration.

From Wkipedia: Some critics, such as Fairness and Accuracy in Reporting (FAIR) and the Columbia Journalism Review, have criticized Lichter and the CMPA for holding a conservative bias of their own or for being funded by conservative foundations.

    FOX Vs. MSNBC Vs. CNN
    August 17th, 2008, 11:26 PM EDT

Liberals and the Democratic establishment often regard FOX News as biased and tend to diminish the strength of its appeal to all but die-hard conservatives. In the process, I get plenty of grief from the left for taking a FOX paycheck. A new study out by Pew Research shows some of this conventional wisdom not to be true. In fact, FOX News has the most “Fair and Balanced” audience of the three cable news nets.

    The political breakdown:

    CNN: 51% Democrats, 18% Republicans, 23% independents

    MSNBC: 45% Democrats, 18% Republicans, 27% independents

Fox News: 33% Democrats, 39% Republicans, 22% independents

This represents a fair and balanced audience of viewers who are engaged, who vote, and who Democrats need if they’re going to win elections. To those who argue that Democrats should avoid FOX News, look at who you’re also avoiding: a combination of Democrats and independents equalling 45% of the most-watched cable news channel.

    Here is the Pew survey.

The Pew (PEJ) report for the 2008 election cycle is out.

    Among the findings?

FOXNEWS provided the most balanced cable coverage of the 2008 presidential election among major news outlets (CNN, MSNBC, FOXNEWS) and likely the most balanced of all six outlets (NBC, CBS, ABC included), although they oddly didnt release the latter three network’s numbers. Keep in mind, while Pew bills itself as Independent, it certainly leans to the left, which is probably why they didnt release all the numbers. God forbid they stated FoxNews was the most fair of any television network, as it’s doubtful any network bested the Fox numbers below since the Fox positive/negative are almost a perfect match. Interestingly, while they released the numbers for MSNBC and FOX, they didnt release individual CNN numbers, choosing to say it closely reflected the “Total Coverage” numbers below, putting it somewhere between MSNBC and FOX.

The Best (least biased) and the Worst (most biased) news coverage?

    BEST (FOXNEWS)
    Positive Obama Stories 25%
    Positive McCain Stories 22%
    Negative Obama Stories 40%
    Negative McCain Stories 40%

    WORST (MSDNC)
    Positive Obama Stories 73%
    Positive McCain Stories 10%
    Negative Obama Stories 14%
    Negative McCain Stories 43%

TOTAL COVERAGE (all media added together – 2,412 stories from 48 outlets)
    Positive Obama Stories 36%
    Positive McCain Stories 14%

You folks can try to wish it away, but the FACTS speak for themselves.

Fox News is FAIR and BALANCED.

  163. katy says:

    no. it’s not.

  164. alexnexus says:

I believe hat Fox News is the number one cable news channel because the majority of conservative viewers don’t have other conservative news alternatives.

The liberal news viewers have a plethora of choices, and, therefore, alternatives. There is more competition for that demographic. The “best” liberal news channel will alway have less ratings/viewers than the FNC

Fox News has really attractive – controversial – commentators. This is also a factor to their ratings dominance, but it’s not the only or main element for their success. Is really a combination of these two and some other minor aspects.

Fox News moto “Fair and Balance” is flawed. It just doesn’t hold – It actually appears less and less in between segments and programs. This is not just a coincidence.

Now, if Murdoch believes that his profitable channel is truthly “Fair and Balance”, how can he explain the anti-Obama/Goverment rhetoric from Beck, Hannity, O’Rilley – Ok: O’Reilly wants to appear as a conscious moderate commentator/person… but his is definitely a lesser/cable TV Maquiavelo -, Ingram, Cavuto and the vast majority of their guests and promos?

The FCN has a the pulse on their niche – that explains Beck – and that’s why the keep moving towards what that market wants to hear and watch.

Bottom line: for the FCN more and more is not about the truth that comes from journalism. Is a bout the righteousness in their brand of infotainment/ business.

    ralph the wonder locust Says:

Very good, Timmeh. You found a study that strives to appear “Fair & Balanced”™.

The study’s author, Dr. Robert Lichter, is an academic elite who just happens to have written a book called, The Media Elite…

But, but, his center says its unbiased and bipartisan! Don’t you magically achieve neutrality just by claiming you have it? Oh yeah, that’s what this entire discussion was about to begin with…

    .

    Tim Vaculik Says:

    READ IT AND STFU:

    from Alan Colmes…

The “house negro” of the (pretends to be) Democratic punditocracy? No thanks.

    Tim Vaculik Says:

You folks can try to wish it away, but the FACTS speak for themselves.

Fox News is FAIR and BALANCED.

Your Googles aside, how can you believe that? You’re a conservative. You like everything on that network. Therefore it can’t be fair and balanced. In order fot that to be the case, it would have to present things you disagreed with half of the time, rather than 0% of the time.

  166. The Moderate Squad says:

Colmes said “This represents a fair and balanced audience of viewers who are engaged, who vote, and who Democrats need if they’re going to win elections.”

OK, Tim V., you went to the trouble of finding a cooked survey, but your post tears your “logic” down. If the Dems need the Fox demographic to win elections, then what happened last year and in 2006? Clearly the Dems don’t need Fox, while the Reich needs Fox desperately as a conduit for their misinformation.

And who told you Pew was left-leaning? Someone at Fox?

  167. pluege says:

since Americans have a love affair with bimbos (male and female), Foes popularity only proves that they have the largest number of bimbos on display.

It must upset you that all the girls laugh when your pants are down.

Anyone in my house that changes to a fox channel gets permanently relieved of their remote control privileges.
    No negotiations.

  171. katy says:

    “foes” works too, pluege…

  172. Leftside Annie says:

Murdoch: ‘If we weren’t fair and balanced, we wouldn’t have the number one network in news.’

    HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH!!!!!!!

Oh, Rupie – yer such a funny guy! ARRRRRRRRRRRRR!

  173. Tim Vaculik says:

    ElBruce,

You may be surprised to know I don’t always agree with what I see on Fox News, both to the liberal point of view as well as more to the conservative side.

In other words, I try to be balanced in my own intake of news and commentary. Sometimes I think Fox News is too liberal!

  174. royor says:

The two biggest lies of the century: “Fair and Balanced” and “It’s not torture”.

  175. wiley says:

This is a flat out lie from Ruppert. Fox has a number one rating for cable news. Network news has a much larger number of viewers. Most Americans don’t have a news channel going on all day. ABC has around 9 million viewers.

Let’s put the large-ness of 3 million Americans into perspective

    3 million Americans:

    allergic to peanuts’’struggle with stuttering

    could have Barret’s esophagus

    are affected by panic disorders

    suffer from schizophrenia

have now been out of work for six months

    are of Arab descent

    are wearing the white band

    have glaucoma

will seek medical care in the next 24 hours

have at least partial Lebanese ancestry

have an unintended pregnancy each year

are employed within the justice system

work for firms owned by foreign companies

    suffer with Grave’s disease

  176. joygreenmcgann says:

What does popularity have to do with truth? What does the popularity of a film have to do with its quality? How did a man who lost an election become President? How did we enter a war of choice when the President said it was necessity? How could we be Americans and torture people?

There isn’t a liberal side on Fox. Liasson and Williams are beltway hacks, who also push Right-wing memes when it’s convenient. Fake libs, and he thinks Fox is too liberal? The guy would probably faint if he heard an actual left-wing opinion on Fox.

    A couple more Murdoch quotes:

“For better or for worse, our company (The News Corporation Ltd.) is a reflection of my thinking, my character, my values.”

    “safeguard national culture.”

  179. woke says:

‘If we weren’t fair and balanced, we wouldn’t have the number one network in news.’”

HaHa, pretty funny coming from an organization that went to court to protect their right to LIE and MISINFORM people.

That so many watch those lies is all the more disturbing, not a feather in the cap of America, eh?

  180. MapleStreet says:

And hundreds of times the people watch American Idol than watch Nova on PBS. (if not thousands. I don’t have the real numbers).

So American Idol has more truthiness and is more educational than Nova.

  181. MapleStreet says:

Didn’t Faux news defend itself from a lawsuit by claiming that it wasn’t a news outlet ?

  182. wisdomofwords says:

    Jimmybb says:
Whats your excuse libs? Fox has 10 times the ratings CNN or MSNBC has. O’rielly and hannity destroy olbermans ratings by the millions. It’s not even CLOSE. LOL</em
    ————————————————————-

You left out one little piece of info. Most if not all cable packages the corporate media push includes Faux as part of their basic news packages. They want you to pay for the news stations that have Olberman, Maddow etc…

  183. doublereflection says:

Just more proof that intelligent people don’t watch much TV.

  184. iLarynx says:

Fair and balanced. Sure. That’s what made Der Sturmer so popular in Germany, RTLM so popular in Rwanda, and Pravda the most popular paper in the USSR.
Murdoch is a modern day version of Julius Streicher. Nothing more, nothing less.

    Jimmy Big Bucks says:

“Whats your excuse libs? Fox has 10 times the ratings CNN or MSNBC has. O’rielly and hannity destroy olbermans ratings by the millions. It’s not even CLOSE. LOL”

Rightwing Morons watch Fox Noise to hear their paranoid delusions reinforced in the echo chamber.

These peabrains are the lower IQ equivalent of the readers of the Wall Street Journal’s Editorial Page who:

    1. Read a NEWS story on page one, written by a REPORTER;

    2. Turn to the editorial page to read an OP-ED piece written by a RWN HACK that directly contradicts the news piece;

    3. Incorporate the HACK piece into their world-view construct;

    4. And suppress the NEWS piece so as not to be confused by facts.

The difference, of course: Most Fox viewers can’t read.

  186. iLarynx says:

#166 Tim Vaculik claims that the PEW findings at http://www.journalism.org/node/13436#fn1 show that (according to Tim) “FOXNEWS provided the most balanced cable coverage of the 2008 presidential election among major news outlets (CNN, MSNBC, FOXNEWS)”

Tim’s claim, to put as friendly a face as possible on it, is complete bunk.

Here are some quotes from Tim’s PEW link:
In cable, the evidence firmly suggests there now really is an ideological divide between two of the three channels, at least in their coverage of the campaign…

  187. iLarynx says:

More quotes:?Things look much better for Barack Obama—and much worse for John McCain—on MSNBC than in most other news outlets. On the Fox News Channel, the coverage of the presidential candidates is something of a mirror image of that seen on MSNBC.

The tone of CNN’s coverage, meanwhile, lay somewhere in the middle of the cable spectrum, and was generally more negative than the press overall.
On the evening newscasts of the three traditional networks… ABC, CBS and NBC, coverage tends to be more neutral and generally less negative than elsewhere.

The numbers Tim cites are also wrong. His post is wrong all over.

  188. Mikala says:

Once again a Fox talking head misstates the facts. They are only #1 in cable news and not even close to CBS,NBC or ABC in viewership. There is also a reason for that and that is because they validate a certain segment of our populations views which have nothing to do with reality. All the rest of the news outlets split up the rest of us. Of course facts never stood in the way of what Faux News puts out.

  189. ElBruce says:

Worth mentioning again: FAUX Noise is not “news.” Comparing it to actual cable news channels is meaningless.

    .

    cdwriteme Says:

    A couple more Murdoch quotes:

“For better or for worse, our company (The News Corporation Ltd.) is a reflection of my thinking, my character, my values.”

Is it of concern to anyone else that our politics is being significantly influenced by an Australian?

    .

    iLarynx Says:

Fair and balanced. Sure. That’s what made Der Sturmer so popular in Germany, RTLM so popular in Rwanda, and Pravda the most popular paper in the USSR.

I think they all claimed to be fair and balanced too, didn’t they?

    .

    iLarynx Says:

The numbers Tim cites are also wrong. His post is wrong all over.

Well, he just read the conclusion. He didn’t look at the underlying evidence. That’s how they roll. Speaking of which, where were those WMD’s again?
