Upstate NY school board president ‘regularly’ sends offensive e-mails, including one calling Obama a ‘negro.’
Yesterday, the Buffalo News reported that Lewiston-Porter school board President Robert J. Weller is being criticized for “regularly” forwarding offensive e-mails to friends and former members of the board. One e-mail contained a list of a dozen male chauvinist “jokes,” such as an explanation that women have smaller feet to allow them “to stand closer to the kitchen sink.” Other e-mails included:
– A photo of Barack Obama, depicted making a campaign promise to deliver jobs to “everyone who can work.” In the background of the doctored image is a group of African-Americans running away.
– A mock news release from the Detroit Police Department that claims the department will replace German shepherd police dogs with “coon dogs, due to the fact the city is not having any problems with Germans.”
– A doctored photo of Chelsea Clinton holding up a T-shirt that reads, “My mom is getting her ass kicked by a Negro.”
“If you’re not white and Christian, in Bob Weller’s world, you don’t exist,” commented former board President Robert L. Laub, who served on the board with Weller. Though Weller is standing by his actions – going as far as telling a reporter that his critics can “accuse all they want to” – a pastor of the True Bethel Baptist Church in Buffalo is organizing an e-mail campaign to persuade him to apologize or resign. But, Weller is a school board president. The e-mails have cast doubt on his ability to be objective and fair across the whole population of students that depend on him.
I think he is mistaken that everybody does it. And that there is no harm in him sending the e-mails.
He should apologize and/or resign, because the nature of his job requires that the student body is confident in his objectivity. This revelation has no doubt shaken that confidence.

If the suggestion that it should be ‘corrected’ out of society, I would disagree.
The e-mails are offensive. The hope is that over time people will have a more universal understanding of the inappropriateness of these stereotypical characterizations.
That understanding should be encouraged (or the converse sentiment alienated) without infringing on the basic right of people to say what they want.

Why is it? Simple.As I’ve explained to you before, b-cup, it’s about the power equation. Most people with a reasonably well-developed sense of empathy (dirty word to conservatives these days, but it basically means the ability to consider from another’s perspective) are uncomfortable when the powerful make fun of the powerless. It’s bullying. Most people reject bullies.
In our society, white males are the prevailing power structure. Men are typically more powerful than women, white are typically more powerful than minority racial or ethnic groups. That’s just the way it is.
When a group attains its place at the table, it then becomes comfortable to make jokes about them — irish jokes, for example. Blonde jokes are acceptable because of the perception that blondes are the naturally dominant figures when women gather — especially attractive women. This perception is probably subconscious, but it’s critical, and audiences know instinctively when that line has been crossed.
Black comedians can make fun of black culture because they live it. White comedians can make fun of white culture for the same reason. Black comedians can make fun of white culture because it is the dominant culture. Yet white comedians risk their careers if they try to make fun of black culture. It can be done, but has to be done very skillfully, and set up in a way that demonstrates that the comedian takes NOBODY seriously. He has to, in effect, put himself beyond all culture, make himself an outsider. Bill Maher, for instance, can get away with this occasionally — but he often fails and bombs with it, too.
Minority comedians can make fun of other minority groups much more easily than white comedians can, because they’re all, in effect, perceived as outsiders to the dominant culture.
It’s a power calculation. Plain and simple.

A society that doesn’t expect respect for women and minorities, I think you’ll agree, is one not worth belonging to. When the ethnic mix of the nation levels off — and the distribution of power among the groups — then it will probably be more like open season on anyone who deserves it.
Let’s face it — no one’s shying away from Michael Jackson jokes, are they? Why not? Because he’s a ridiculous public figure with a history of enormous wealth and power in entertainment. Not so much any more, but he’ll have to go a long way to build up a large reserve of public sympathy at this point.
But my main point is that I think “disparage” is much too harsh a word. And any damage done to a sensitive white boy growing up in a culture that lampoons his group will be minimal. If that’s what is actually going on, no. But in the media (and society is shaped by it’s media), there is racial humor that shows blacks and hispanics in unflattering roles. The Friday movies by Ice Cube are a good example. Although the stereotypes were shown in a humorous light, they were brutally honest, and dealt with all the negative self-images that minorities have had to face for generations. Whites saw these films, and took away different cultural messages, some distinctly negative. Some simply laughed at the stereotypes, and others laughed because the images confirmed their beliefs in those stereotypes.
Until the spirit of white xenophobia is totally exorcised, white children should be made unflinchingly aware of history, and try to become comfortable with it. The guilt is not truly theirs to shoulder, but they should at least acknowledge it’s historical context.

I have a nephew with CP. He’s had an incredibly difficult life. We in the family occasionally have fun with him because of his foibles, but I can’t imagine making fun of something that was related to his disability. Not because of some nod to sensitivity, but just because I can’t imagine it being very funny.
b-cup strikes me as coming at this from an entirely cerebral position, expecting humor to follow the kind of strict rules that the law should follow. it doesn’t work that way.

I don’t think the case is that convincing, that simply due to their race or gender (today), they will inherit some privilege unavailable to others. But, what they will be inheriting, if barfly is correct, is the guilt that we somehow collectively feel they deserve. Why?
In reality, maybe much ado about nothing. In principle, it makes no sense to replace one bad idea, or injustice, with another.

This was the email that was making the rounds shortly after the “Muslim stamps” were released by the USPS, full of histerical screeches about the Muslim “takeover” of America, the crimes committed by them Big Bad Muslims against Good Righteous Christians, and asking the recipient to boycott the stamp -and the USPS for good measure.
I emailed our realtor back, explaining the reason for being of the stamp, that there was no such thing as a Muslim conspiracy, and that the same specious reasons could be used to single out any other ethnic/racial/religious group.
He must have taken exception because we never heard back from him again.
I wonder if anyone emailed this Weller explaining why his jokes weren’t funny by any definition of the word… I have a hard time believing he had no idea how inappropriate and unwelcome his emails could be.

There’s no either/or here, immediate removal is the ONLY solution. His behavior can’t be tolerated and no one should have to tell him it’s not funny, he doesn’t need a gentle reminder, he needs to hit the employment office and see what’s available.

It’s not about despising anyone, and it’s not about blame. It’s about taking responsibility for the advantages bestowed to you by the crimes of history. And they are crimes. But that’s how history is. Nevertheless, if you’re going to act like your advantages are somehow earned by you or that you have some natural entitlement to them, if you’re going to be jealous of the attempts of others to gain mere equality, then you exist solely to perpetuate those crimes. Lewiston is a tiny village 5 miles north of Niagara Falls and sits right on the Niagara River. Lewiston was then and continues to be lily white. A person of color will still turn heads in the local Tops grocery store. That the village would elect this moron as head of the school board comes as no surprise. When I was in school, a black family tried to move in up near the hospital, Mt. St. Mary’s. A cross was promptly burnt on their lawn. Enough said – this jackass should be fired.
