Interestingly enough, I attended this school (from 6th grade on) back in the ’70’s. Doesn’t sound like much has changed. Lewiston is a tiny village 5 miles north of Niagara Falls and sits right on the Niagara River. Lewiston was then and continues to be lily white. A person of color will still turn heads in the local Tops grocery store. That the village would elect this moron as head of the school board comes as no surprise. When I was in school, a black family tried to move in up near the hospital, Mt. St. Mary’s. A cross was promptly burnt on their lawn. Enough said – this jackass should be fired.

This is not intended as a cheap shot at white people. But, I urge white people to take people of color seriously when they claim racism, even if you can’t see it. The fact is that Weller’s views are not unique and there are ALOT of white people in authority positions across the nation that have views as bad or worse than Weller’s. To think that sort of thinking, combined with the vast majority of whites in America who choose to look away, does not effect decisions and the atmosphere for people of color within organizations is to be willfully in denial. So, the next time ANY of us of ANY color who like to think of ourselves as egalitarian get wind of hate speech, let’s get some moral courage and speak up. I include myself in that.
