Cal Thomas compares Sotomayor to ‘white supremacy’ advocate G. Harrold Carswell.
On Fox News Sunday this weekend, conservative columnist Cal Thomas declared that “as usual,” Rush Limbaugh is “absolutely right” when he calls Judge Sonia Sotomayor a “racist.” Thomas complained that the media has a “double standard” when it comes to covering Supreme Court nominees accused of racism, citing two judges nominated by Richard Nixon — Clement Haynsworth and G. Harrold Carswell:
THOMAS: It is double standard, as usual. Rush is absolutely right, as usual. I went back and looked at some of the Republican nominees. Richard Nixon nominated two justices to the Supreme Court, named Clement Haynsworth and G. Harrold Carswell. Many Democrats denounced both of them as racist, one because he belonged to an all-white country club. that was enough for him. It depends on whose ox is being gored. A racist is a racist. If you think you are superior because of your race or gender, if that isn’t racist, what is?

It’s telling that Thomas mentioned the reasons that only one of Nixon’s nominees was considered racist. As Media Matters’ Jamison Foser noted last week when Pat Buchanan laughed about his support for Carswell, the judge’s nomination ran into trouble when “a blatantly racist” speech he delivered was revealed. “I believe that segregation of the races is proper … and the only practical and correct way of life in our states. I yield to no man in the firm, vigorous belief in the principles of white supremacy and I shall always be so governed,” said Carswell at an American Legion gathering.

Racism and sexism are no mystery and its not an “opinion” matter.
When I grew up in the DC area there were two drinking fountains at several local businesses. One said “Whites” and one said “Colored”. When I started school it was “Whites Only” in our school. That changed mid 60’s, and things started to gradually improve.
But for a conservative columnist or politician to talk and pretend as if these things didn’t exist and that racism is a “two way street” is just wrong.
We’ve tolerated their kind long enough. Advertisers should start cutting their spots for any radio or television station that permits this sort of racism over its airways and members of congress who say things like this should be censured.
Enough is enough.

No, we would like a Supreme Court that is representative of the people who live in the United States. Right now we have four very right wing religious extremist Justices and the remainder are moderates. There isn’t one liberal supreme court justice. Why should right get 4 extreme right wing justices and we can’t have even one who is moderately liberal?
Also, over half the people in this country are female, and yet we have a supreme court with only one female currently on the court.

June 8th, 2009 at 7:56 pmThe saddest part about all of this back-and-forth is that it makes me realize how the conservative talkers on TV, radio and the ‘net all use Troll language when they discuss anything like Sotomayor, gay marriage, their anti-choice movement, church and state, etc. All they do is talk over the other person, use vague or simplistic language with only the most tenuous connections to fact (”they hate us for our freedom”), and use faux-outrage when logic is used against them.
People like Limbaugh, Gingrich, Tancredo, Bachmann and Palin probably don’t personally believe all the detritus that leaves their mouths. The sad part is, they don’t care if they inspire their followers to adopt such rudimentary (and dangerous) views of the world.
Cal Thomas is tragically just another enabling tool.

My friend, I applaud and respect your efforts to “tame” the trolls into either putting up a logical argument to back up even 1% of what they say or kindly leave the premises. I, too, would prefer to engage them on a more intellectual level than they seem capable of achieving.
I wish they would understand that I don’t think I’m right all the time, and I will be the first to admit when I am uncertain of my facts (and I usually try to say so). But I do have a reason why I believe I am right (when I do), and I want to have a real discussion with a real conservative (preferably an articulate and intelligent one, not one who’s conservative because his father was and who doesn’t know anything about conservative philosophy) so I can challenge my own thinking, to see if it stands up to critical thought. So far, none of the current “batch o’ troll(s)” has given me any logical, fact-based reason to make me change my mind.
I support you in whatever you wish to do with respect to your troll-wrangling efforts. Good luck, my friend. When do I get to open up a can o’ whoopass-NY-sarcasm?
