In recent days, Fox’s Bill O’Reilly has criticized the “liberal media” and CNN for what he viewed as a paucity of coverage of the deadly attack on the Army-Navy recruiting station in Little Rock, AR last week. “Only Anderson Cooper at 10 o’clock covered the story,” O’Reilly said of CNN. (In fact, CNN had reported on the attack over a dozen times.) Despite O’Reilly’s insistence that Fox News has been following the attack story more closely than its competitors, when the lone survivor of the attack, Pvt. Quinton Ezeagwula, spoke with reporters earlier today, only CNN and MSNBC carried the press conference live. Fox News never cut to the press conference, choosing instead to focus on Newt Gingrich’s criticisms of the Obama administration from last night’s congressional Republican fundraiser:
So the question is, will O’Reilly complain about his network’s failure to cover today’s presser? Or is Fox News above such complaints because its not part of the “liberal media”?

The really critical differences, as I see it, are that one significantly affects domestic policy and the other has a very tiny effect on foreign policy. Though they both qualify as religiously motivated terrorist attacks, there’s actually good reason to consider the assassination of a leading expert and service provider to be a bigger story — though not necessarily a bigger tragedy — than the killing of a freshly-minted PFC in a recruiting billet.

The difference that I see is that Dr, Tiller was targeted, specifically and by name, over a period of decades. He was targeted by private and public organizations including a “News” network. He was allegedly stalked and harassed by his killer over a period of time.
Privates Long and Ezeagwula were random victims who happened to be in the wrong place when a madman snapped. By the shooters own admission he was looking for anyone in uniform. And, though I may have missed it, I haven’t seen anyone from any group trying to justify his acts through some kind of warped moral relativism. Though I have no doubt there are radicals both here and abroad who celebrate his acts in private.

but one of the people that died that day because of a drug overdose was named heath ledger
its not that his death is more important, or more tragic, or more awful.

June 9th, 2009 at 11:57 pmThe fact is, this shooter who killed the recruiters isn’t part of a movement with a history of harassing and threatening people associated with their targets. The guy who killed the recruiters didn’t kill in the name of a political wedge issue that can decide elections.
If the MSM wanted to, they could be covering this history, which includes mailing anthrax to clinics, and putting up wanted posters targeting doctors that courts have decided are not a form of protected speech. As usual, most of the MSM will turn every story into spectacle and not do research that an eighth grader could do on the internet—gathering news stories that have been reported in the past.

Well first of all, the other day it was “200″ million deaths, and I corrected you then. Now you say a 160 million deaths, and after I correct you you’re suddenly referring to “causalities”.
Here. Here’s what you said then.
Yet tonight it was “160 Million DEAD”, which after correcting you became 160 Million “casualties”.
Like the few in here I do argue with consistently your issue is simply admitting when you’ve made a mistake. Rather than do so, like them you’ll spend all night arguing with me, and trying to slander my character rather than just admit you got it wrong.
I get something wrong, especially a technical detail, I don’t make excuses and say “oh I meant this” or “oh I meant that”.
I say, “oops, sorry, got it wrong”.
So now we have 3 numbers from you.
We have 200 million dead.
160 million dead.
And now 160 million “casualties”.
Which amounts to you not knowing that much about WWII, yet you mock me and challenge my understanding of a war I’ve spent over 40 years studying from every aspect, right down to the minutia of depth of the armor skirting on the sides of a Mark IV Panzerkampfwagen or the actual role of the SS Einsatzgruppen as opposed to their official capacities. I even speak German and can recite the words to “Horst Wessel Lied” from memory in the original German (not something I’m all too proud of). I know this war. My family knows this war. We grew up in a WWII home, and I was born just over a decade after the end of the war. Its not something I’m ignorant on, or need lectures from someone who thinks 200 million people died in it. But worse, you act like it was I who attacked you wiley. But if you remember correctly, I was in the thread about gitmo, and I made ONE comment, not to you I might add, just a general comment about the similarity of the photograph of the kneeling prisoners to some of the images President Obama saw earlier on his visit to Buchenwald. And you couldn’t stand it.
You chose to attack me. It was the anniversary of D-Day and earlier that day President Obama had visited Buchenwald and admonished us to not cease the dialogue on the Holocaust. It was the first time in history a US President ever visited Buchenwald, much less made such a speech there.
So I made one comment about it. This was that comment.
And after mocking me for bringing up the holocaust, this is what you said.
That comment is unacceptable on every level.
To say with regards to Buchenwald, “In every single war there are prison camps” is so far from acceptable from someone claiming to be progressive, or anyone for that matter except perhaps a neo nazi, as to be off the charts.
I was serious when I suggested you go over to the Jewish blogosphere and post that one and the others. See what they think about it.
It is downplaying the holocaust and the nature of the death camps to a level as to indicate pure apathy and downright ignorance of the events. The latter being more likely (and more forgiving) than the former, being your numbers as to the death toll in WWII.
Second, because it was uncalled for. I did nothing to merit your attack. You chose to be the antagonist (and now play the victim) and you came at me for no reason, other than what can only be called spite. And doing so means I have to respond if I want to correct your accusations which only brings on “the idiot squad”, a small group of bloggers here (among which “Pete” is always present) who take sport in attacking me as a group and who play endless word games with me and then accuse me of being the problem. So then they see me arguing with you, and use that as cheap leverage to try to further slander me. As if their comments were somehow not included in the “hijacking the thread” thing they always accuse me of.
So forgive me if I don’t roll over and accept your revisionist history of either the holocaust, WWII or your downright apathetic and disrespectful comments about the holocaust, nor your demands for me to stop talking about it.
I have several close uncles, most of whom are dead now, who fought in WWII, in the Philippines during the “Clean Up” operations, at Bastogne in an artillery division during the “Battle of the Bulge” and on the beaches of Normandy, France, during Operation Overlord (D-Day), which that day you attacked me on demanding I stop speaking about the Holocaust was the anniversary of.
And even after all that, I was still willing to ignore it and you today, but you chose once more to throw your two cents worth in to the middle of a debate I was having that didn’t concern you, and where I’d said nothing to you, “piling on” with the rest of those who I now deem “the moron brigade” to try and take another shot at me, claiming you never argue more than 15 minutes, even though you spent two days arguing with me over the Holocaust and my comments on it.
I’m willing to live and let live and always proceed from that assumption. But a few of you, including you, seem to think it’s ok to take a shot at me, and yet if I respond then you label me as the instigator.
Responding to someones cheap shot is not “instigating”.
Taking the cheap shot is instigating.
Responding is responding. Do I sometimes over respond? Sure.
But usually I’m responding to several of you, the usual suspects as it were, which is difficult when they are rapid fire round robin tag teaming me and trying to make it look like I’m upset or angry, rather than merely responding to multiple unprovoked “cheap shots”.
Anyway I’m perfectly willing to let it go, again.
Next time you see me in a debate, resist the urge to fire your cheap shots, and add your two cents worth, that is if you don’t like my responses.
