Frank Gaffney claims Obama ‘may actually still be’ a Muslim.

frankgaffneywebToday in his Washington Times column, right-wing commentator Frank Gaffney reviews President Obama’s speech at Cairo University last week and thinks he has stumbled onto something, that “there is mounting evidence that the president not only identifies with Muslims, but actually may still be one himself.” The evidence? “Mr. Obama referred four times in his speech to ‘the Holy Koran,’” he “established his firsthand knowledge of Islam,” and he uttered the phrase “peace be upon them” when referring to Moses, Jesus, and Mohammed. And according to Gaffney, “no believing Christian” would ever make such a statement because “for Christians, Jesus is the living and immortal Son of God.” Gaffney also throws in a Munich analogy:

The man now happy to have his Islamic-rooted middle name featured prominently has engaged in the most consequential bait-and-switch since Adolf Hitler duped Neville Chamberlain over Czechoslovakia at Munich.

The Wonk Room’s Matt Duss notes that not only does Gaffney enjoy invoking the Munich analogy, particularly in places where it doesn’t make any sense (such as this case and others), but he also isn’t to be taken seriously “as an analyst.” But, “as someone willing to cast deeply irresponsible and transparently bigoted accusations against the president,” Duss argues, “he should be taken very seriously.”

  53. WAYNEBRO says:

It’s ironic that today on Politico they’re running a story entitled: “Obama invokes Jesus more than Bush”.

    And excerpt from that story.

More than four months into the Obama presidency, a picture is emerging of a chief executive who is comfortable with public displays of his religion — although he has also paid tribute to other faiths and those he called “nonbelievers” during his inaugural address.

Obama’s invocation of the Christian Messiah is more overt than Americans heard in the public rhetoric of Bush in his time in the White House — even though Bush’s victories were powered in part by evangelical voters.

Clearly President Obama is not a Muslim. But what if he were? Most Americans wouldn’t have a problem with that I imagine. After all America’s not a Christian nation. It’s a multi-faith, multi-belief system nation. All faiths are welcomed here. In fact the Jewish religion is very prominent throughout the halls of power, especially in the media and entertainment industries. So if President Obama were a Muslim, why would that be so significant.

    Here’s why.

There’s a significant group that is growing in numbers of radical right wing extremists, who are capable of extreme acts of violence, as we saw last week with the slaying of Doctor Tiller by one of them.

Muslims are on the top of their hate list, particularly since 911. It’s easy to get them to want to kill Muslims. Remember post 911? The first few years after? When all the Muslim shop owners and such were in danger and some were attacked?

So what Gaffney is doing here, like many other right wing figureheads, is placating to this crowd, and literally “egging them on”.

Muslims attacked us on 911, i.e. far right wing extremists hate Muslims and would like to kill Muslims, i.e. tell them where the Muslims are that are doing the most damage to America and they will go kill them.

In other words, what Frank Gaffney, and the others like Limbaugh, most of Fox News “Fox and Friends”, etc, are doing, is making a subtle albeit clear call to the extremists out there, to assassinate the President.

First the warn of the dangers he is committing.

They warn people he is “turning America into a socialist country”.

Then they go on TV and the radio and say things like “he’s the greatest danger to our country”.

Then, they finish up by painting the bulls-eye on him, saying “look, he’s a Muslim”.

Then they sit back, and let the radical right wing extremists, do their work.

There comes a point where free speech crosses a line, even for this died in the wool free speech advocate, and they’re crossing it.

  54. RantingTommy says:

The old adage, don’t beat up the messenger because of the message doesn’t apply here. The messenger has deliberately perverted the Christian faith and has brought shame upon himself. There is nothing in the teachings of Christ that would remotely support Gaffney’s premise. President Obama spoke as a true Christian would be expect to speak extending respect to an audience that believes in a one “God of love”. What Mr. Gaffney has illustrated is his support for a hateful, vengeful god, but not the true Christ.

For half a century, this beautiful mosque has served as a place of worship for Muslims and has helped to advance understanding between people of different faiths. Millions of our fellow Americans practice the Muslim faith. They lead lives of honesty and justice and compassion.

The problem with Gaffney’s attack, for fundamentalist Christians is that the only way one becomes a Christian is a personal acceptance of Christ. Catholicism required continued loyalty and obedience to the Church, and tyhere are all sorts of objective tests you can apply. But Protestants? Fundamentalists flit around from church to church to find a congregation they like, and set themselves up as pastors merely because they feel like it. There’s no ritual, no practice that’s essential to fundamentalist Christianity. Only that profession, the acceptance of Christ.
Call Barack Obama’s profession into question, and you call everyone’s. A right-wing Christian who’s religiously sincere would find this vastly disturbing. It’s not a good idea to point out how fragile it all is.

But with Islam that’s not the case. There are clear requirements set out in the Holy Koran. Iman, Salah, Zakah, Sawm and Hajj. Faith, prayer, charity, fasting and pilgrimage. Prayer 5 times a day is not an optional thing that can be dispensed with in a good cause. Nor is fasting during Ramadan. Obama sprnds a whole day without getting down on his knees, facing Mecca? He’s not a Muslim. Drink alcohol? Eat in daylight during Ramadan? Not a Muslim. And there is no Muslim priesthood that could exempt one from these requirements: It’s in the book. You do it. No excuses and no interpretations.

The American Right toy with Christianity anyway. Georg W Bush, who never went to church, is a devout Christian Ann Coulter (Ann Coulter!) can set herself up as a devout christian. And the strident Atheism of the Ayn Randists bothers them not at all. But you can slag Barack Obama’s Christianity all you want.

    June 9th, 2009 at 2:42 pm

bit doesn’t believe you have any authority for making the following statement: President Obama spoke as a true Christian would be expect to speak extending respect to an audience that believes in a one “God of love”.

There is nothing in the New Testament that suggests that all religions – religious pluralism – are to be respected. Your remark reflects a political view, not a religious one.

In addition the following statement; ““peace be upon them” when referring to Moses, Jesus, and Mohammed,” serves a specific purpose to Muslims. Mentioning Moses, Jesus, and Mohammed is more that simply mentioning three famous religious leaders. These names are the names of Jewish, Christian and Islam religious leaders, but the real meaning is even a bit more subtle. Muslims say the three are all prophets of God, and they emphatically deny that God has a Son; that is, they emphatically deny that Jesus Christ is the Son of God. Islam does claim that Christ was a prophet, so when the name Jesus and Mohammed are used together Muslims are claiming that they are equal – both are prophets.

bit doesn’t believe this is an appropriate statement for a Christian to make.

That the Creator has a Son is reported in the New Testament, a part of the Bible – Holy Bible. This event was prophesied in the Old Testament.

You can read about it in the Gospels. bit suggests you start with the book of John. John 3:16 is a succinct summary of what happened.

Peace be upon you, bitblt. That’s not a secret code, it’s pretty damn clear. As a matter of fact, Jesus used to say it all the time.

Grouping Moses/Jesus/Mohammed together might follow a tradition of holding them as being of roughly equal holiness, but the tradition of using that phrase does not require adherence to any specific theological tenet. Yes, as Christians we must repect anothers beliefs, for we can not know if they are pleasing the Lord with their life works. My belief as a Christian is in no way contigent on your beliefs but I must respect your beliefs in a singular God.
Simply put, respect of another person is how the world should get along. President Obama did a fine job of demonstrating this and is setting a fine example to the rest of the world, and this alone would please the good Lord.

    Cheap shot… even for dbadass.

    http://www.ldolphin.org/islamprimer.html

The Quran is overtly anti-Christ. It denies his death and resurrection. The Quran rejects Jesus as the Son of God (Quran 4:171), and states that Jesus is not the sacrifice of God (Quran 4:157). The Bible and the Quran are inherently opposed and you cannot reconcile the two on this issue. Because the Quran strongly and continually denies Christ, there is a side to the Quran that is overtly demonic in inspiration. Many Muslims and Christians affirm that the Quran has a tremendous amount of influence and power, with the help of spiritual forces.

So if the Quran specifically denies Jesus as the Sone of God, what would be BHO’s purpose in mentioning these three big religous names?

  157. ElBruce says:

    bitblt Says:

bit believes the remark in BHO’s speech was a code phrase.

bit believes a lot of stupid things. But in this instance, bit is correct. It’s code for “I don’t hate you for your religion and I respect your right to practice it.”

    .

    bitblt Says:

The Quran is overtly anti-Christ. It denies his death and resurrection.

Jews also deny Christ’s death and resurrection. So… death to Israel?

Not believing Jesus is the risen-from-the-dead, only-begotten Son of God sent to redeem the sins of mankind does not make one anti-Christian, it only makes one not a Christian.

If you’re hereby declaring war on behalf of Christianity on all non-Christians in the world, prepare to get your ass kicked.

    .

    bitblt Says:

So if the Quran specifically denies Jesus as the Sone of God, what would be BHO’s purpose in mentioning these three big religous names?
You want to know his purpose? Let’s go to the text:

All of us have a responsibility to work for the day when the mothers of Israelis and Palestinians can see their children grow up without fear; when the Holy Land of three great faiths is the place of peace that God intended it to be; when Jerusalem is a secure and lasting home for Jews and Christians and Muslims, and a place for all of the children of Abraham to mingle peacefully together as in the story of Isra, when Moses, Jesus, and Mohammed (peace be upon them) joined in prayer.

There’s his purpose, right there. You don’t need any secret codes, you can just read what he’s saying: the “Holy Land” has historically been fought over by three closely related faiths, and maybe they should get along with each other instead.

  158. flight says:

    bitblt,
