Martinez dismisses uproar over Sotomayor’s ‘wise Latina’ comment: ‘I understand what she is trying to say.’

melmartinezCNN reports Sen. Mel Martinez (R-FL) is now predicting the successful confirmation of Supreme Court nominee Sonia Sotomayor, although he stopped short of endorsing her. Dismissing the controversy over Sotomayor’s “wise Latina” statement, Martinez said:

For someone who is of Latin background, personally, I understand what she is trying to say. Which is, the richness of her experience forms who she is. It forms who I am.

Sen. Martinez’s comments come following a one-on-one meeting he had with Sotomayor.

good thing mel’s not running for re-election or he’d be facing a primary challenger promoted by the fringe group “assclowns for growth” people and have to contend with tub-o-lard rush.

  2. YoungSloshee says:

Funny how talking to people prevents one from making wild assumptions. Kudos to Martinez for not listening to other conservatives.

  3. J. Fred Smug says:

    Cue BOSS Limbaugh:

“Mel Martinez is a racist! He’s only saying that because he’s a Latino and Sotomayor is a Latina!”

    Etc., etc.

  4. Buckie Boy says:

You got that right, J. Fred, give it 1 day at the most and I am sure the ReichWing Pigs will have their “thought pattern” implanted.

OMG Sen Martinez hates white people too!

  6. ElBruce says:

He actually knows he needs the hispanic vote to survive, so signing on board the “we hate all non-white people” bandwagon is suicide. Of course it’s suicide for them too, they’re just too blind to see it.

  7. annagranfors says:

In other words, “now can I get some of that Latino vote action back again?”

  8. Mugsy says:

Republicans have been making openly racists comments about Sotomayor since she was nominated two weeks ago, but when the vote comes, they’ll vote for her, even giving her faint praise as they do.

Then, when the 2010 mid-terms approach, they’ll tout their vote for “the first Hispanic SC justice in history” in an attempt to appeal to Hispanic voters. Question is, how many will fall for it?

Unfortunately as with any and everything else too many will fall for this BS.

I knew there was a reasonable Republican out there somewhere. I just knew it.

Now the $64,000 question – will they let him stay in the party, or will they run him out, and if they let him stay, will he have to apologize to someone fat and loud whose name we won’t mention?

  11. krystalview says:

So…….Mel Martinez decided to stop beating a dead horse? Wow!

  12. Chyron HR says:

I understand what she is trying to say.

I’m pretty sure that everybody in the GOP understood what she was SAYING. But they needed to pretend she said something else, so they could complain about it.

Greetings, fellow mortal posters. I Am, the Highest of Gods posting.

I must commend the senator for rising above the words of his fellow constituents and speaking his mind on the matter. That he spoke to Judge Sotomayor shows he is able to resist such hateful and foolish rhetoric, which is the last thing the United States needs in these times.

Hopefully there will be others who will aproach this in the same objective manner as the senators has.

    Allow me to say…oops!

  19. amish_edison says:

Well, unfortunately for Mel, he just admitted that he isn’t a white guy AND that he empathizes with a SCOTUS nominee who is a “racialist“. Guess that means that he’ll have to quit being a Republican.

OMG! A Republican who is willing to deal with that most Liberal Evil Thing…Reality! Banish him! Banish him! Call in the Spanish Inquisition and subject him to… The Comfey Chair!

  21. Pennsylvanianne says:

Martinez understands what Sotomayor meant. Most Americans who are not white Anglo-Saxon Protestants also understand what she meant. The problem is, the GOP officials who complained about her statement deliberately misconstrued what she said in order to appeal to their constituents, the majority of whom they think are still WASPs. Just one more reason the GOP is an endangered species.

  22. Intrepid says:

Martinez to get thrown under the bus by “President” Limbaugh in 3… 2… 1…

  23. CParis says:

Martinez probably finally realized he’d better do something to insure his job and appeal to his voters – women, people of color – rather than continue to felate RushHannityGlenn.
After all, it didn’t do the other “brown” folks much good – they tossed MC Steele and Alberto Gonzales under the bus long ago.

  24. Gregor Samsa says:

I’d like to see the people who badgered Sotomayor to also go after Martinez for saying this.

    I won’t hold my breath, though…

It also seems that, even with your omniscience, you don’t quite understand the meaning of the word fellow, or the proper use of punctuation marks.

And funny you should admit there are other gods, as opposed to being the only one as stated in the book you supposedly inspired.

Goes to show omniscience has lost much of its value over the centuries…

Omnipotence is not all it is quite made out to be, mortal poster. When one is setting about with work all around the universe, many things can fall by the wayside. Such as My comprehension of basic English grammar, to name one thing. It’s not intentional, I can assure you, but unfortunately, it happens.

As for ‘admitting’ to there being other gods, I have always been aware of other gods and dieties who have jockeyed for recognition, particularly in that part of the world where worship of My Self began. I just happened, in the long run, to have the greatest amount of worshippers. And those worshippers happened to omit this fact, unfortunately.

Though I am not religious, I have a natural aversion to reading a post by “God”. Maybe it’s a side-effect of Brothabill, but I’m just really averse to reading anything by someone who uses “God” as a screen name. I allow myself jaunts into the narrow-minded when it’s of no consequence.

You should not feel uncomfortable around me, My child. I promise, I am simply here to speak My mind. :)

I pretty much skip those. He may be saying something interesting, but I wouldn’t know due to the pretention.
