Not necessarily. Some of them are pretty smart. Some of them are pretty dumb. Just because someone’s famous, yes, they’ll get more of a platform than otherwise. But what actually comes out of their mouth when they open it may be intelligent or insane, or anywhere in between. I think the lesson to take is to make no assumptions, and judge each proposition on its own merits regardless of who presents it.

Palin’s appearance Monday night was the latest twist in an unusual public flap between a potential 2012 presidential candidate and the Republican congressional leaders who run the party’s fundraising committees. In March, organizers replaced Palin as the keynote speaker with Gingrich after she wavered over accepting the invitation.

Republican officials involved in the discussions, who spoke on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the matter, said Palin was invited to sit at a head table but was told she would not be given a chance to speak for fear that she might overshadow Gingrich.

Jon Voight visits Israel and is a dedicated Zionist. Many Jews who had previously supported Israel rain or shine, were disgusted enough by the latest massacre in Ghaza to say WHOA! Of course, Jewish peace advocates and refuseniks are still very active in Israel. The American Zionists are ratcheting up the language, as true believers do when people in their own group start questioning.

Israel launching a preventive attack on Iran by their lonesome is so ridiculous that I have to wonder if Israel is managing to extort money from U.S. by not attacking Iran (and talking as if they would actually do it).

I think this is sad. Jon Voight was a wonderful actor – remember him in Midnight Cowboy? And in Runaway Train? It’s a shame to see him embarrass himself this way. It really hurts his public image, and since he’s no kind of expert at anything but acting, it doesn’t do his ’cause’ any good either. He’s just squandering the respect people used to have for him before he opened his mouth and demonstrated that he was delusional or stupid or both.

“False prophet” is found in one of those passages from the Bible that is never quoted by politicians… It’s in what my jewish friend David calls the terms and conditions of the contract for believers. It says roughly that there shall come before you false prophets who will speak of miraculous things…and some of the things will come true…but you must realize they are false and not only must you not follow them but you obligated to kill them. It’s that direct. It’s that harsh.

Let us hope Voight’s words were not intended as a reference to this somewhat obscure passage. Had I not been sitting at a synagogue when David’s son had to read the passage, I’d have never heard of it either.

Over the last five years, senior Iranian officials at every level have repeatedly asserted that they do not intend to build nuclear weapons. President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has quoted the regime’s founding father, Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, who asserted that such weapons were “un-Islamic.” The country’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, issued a fatwa in 2004 describing the use of nuclear weapons as immoral. In a subsequent sermon, he declared that “developing, producing or stockpiling nuclear weapons is FORBIDDEN under Islam.” Last year Khamenei reiterated all these points after meeting with the head of the International Atomic Energy Agency, Mohamed ElBaradei.

Now, of course, they could all be lying. But it seems odd for a regime that derives its legitimacy from its fidelity to Islam to declare constantly that these weapons are un-Islamic if it intends to develop them. It would be far shrewder to stop reminding people of Khomeini’s statements and stop issuing new fatwas against nukes.
