Holocaust museum shooter reportedly white supremacist James von Brunn.

This afternoon, a gunman apparently shot at least one person at the Holocaust Museum in Washington, DC. MSNBC is reporting that the suspected shooter, who also sustained gunshot wounds, is James Von Brunn, a white supremacist born in 1920. Brunn has been approvingly cited on Stormfront, a national white supremacist website. He is apparently the author of a tract called, “Kill the Best Gentiles,” which his website describes as “a new, hard-hitting exposé of the JEW CONSPIRACY to destroy the White gene-pool.” Brunn, a WWII veteran, also wrote a screed on President Obama’s citizenship that was re-posted to popular right-wing message board Free Republic:

picture-12

A Department of Homeland Security report leaked earlier this year — and subsequently retracted — warned of right-wing extremists “that are primarily hate-oriented (based on hatred of particular religious, racial or ethnic groups).”

Update Free Republic has now deleted the thread in which von Brunn's writings were posted and linked to.
Update MSNBC reports that the security guard whom Brunn shot, Officer Stephen Tyrone Johns, was pronounced dead at a Washington hospital this afternoon.
Update Last year, Brunn wrote an article praising Hitler and calling America "a Third-World racial garbage-dump." The article's title was unambiguous:

Brunn concluded, "Prepare to die, White America -- you deserve it."

And conservatives of every stripe condemned this report as being unfair — as they all (apparently) identified with extremists.

I’m sure now all these same conservatives will excuse this latest nutcase as merely exercising his right to bear arms and “just letting off some steam.”

I’m sure he’ll be cheered by the right just as vehemently as they cheered on the man who murdered a family doctor at his church. The Republicans are truly the big tent party: terrorists, white supremacists, holocaust deniers, racists, bigots.

Conservatives have an “I-told-you-so” coming on this second well-publicized act of extremist-fueled violence, the most recent other act of course being the assassination of Dr. Tiller. Both are overt acts of terror and vindicate the DHS report. While conservative pundits may be somewhat justified in their concern about the leaking of this report the magnitude of the outrage they expressed, whether genuine or feigned in order to get corporate media attention, betrays yet again their misplaced priorities and sense of objectivity.

    What is OF&F?

Conservatives are not a monolith. I don’t know how productive or fair it is to ask “trolls” to own or disown the shooter’s actions. Not everyone who disagrees with your views are trolls. Your best response to a troll, who is only purpose is to provoke a shouting match with others in lieu of raising the debate, is none at all. You should report such users to the site administrator instead.

The “trolls” on these boards, unfortunately, do an effective job of dragging other users down to their level. Contents of earlier threads make it hard to not infer that they must enjoy the fruits of their labor. People who lived in my dorm freshman year used to prank call the college radio talk shows. There was(were) no internet(s) then but no doubt they would have thrived on the vitriol they could have elicited on this and other message boards.

  50. katy says:

The gunman was identified by NBC News as James W. von Brunn, a man in his late 80s who embraces a far-reaching conspiracy theory involving Jews, blacks and other minority groups, according a Web site he maintains. Early reports indicated that he lives in eastern Maryland.

However, the police chief here, Cathy Lanier, said the identity of the gunman had not been confirmed.

Mayor Adrian M. Fenty of Washington said at an afternoon news conference that the gunman was in critical condition, and the security guard, whom he declined to identify, was in grave condition.

Law enforcement officials said they have long been familiar with Mr. Von Brunn, who has claimed variously to be a member of Mensa, the high-I.Q. fraternity; to have been a P.T. boat captain in World War II and to have been victimized by a court system run by Jews and black people.

    ____________

Whatever happens, there are already two martyrs – the shooter and the guard. They’re both victims of hate.

Mr. von Brunn was not born hating Jews. He was not born hating African-Americans. He was not born a racist. He became these things, perhaps willingly, perhaps unwillingly, but certainly not on his own. There were plenty of people who helped him along the way, sowing whatever seed of hate was planted in his head.

What makes this kind of violence so frightening and tragic is that in von Brunn’s eyes he has done nothing wrong. He is fighting the good fight. He is on the side of righteousness. It’s the same tragic delusion that led to the murder of a doctor in Kansas and a recruiter in Arkansas.

I don’t excuse or condone his act of violence, but I do see it as a symptom of a societal illness. I look at our trolls and their hateful, racist, bigoted scrawlings and see each of them as victims of the same force of hate. Self-righteous hate.

Perhaps if there’s a silver lining, it will be a moment of self-reflection among the Storm Fronters and Freepers and our resident trolls, wondering how the hateful environment they created led to today’s tragedy.

  63. Keith says:

    holywesterempire.org says:

James W. von Brunn holds a BachSci Journalism degree from a mid-Western university where he was president of SAE and played varsity football.

During WWII he served as PT-Boat captain, Lt. USNR, receiving a Commendation and four battle stars. For twenty years he was an advertising executive and film-producer in New York City. He is a member of Mensa, the high-IQ society.

In 1981 Von Brunn attempted to place the treasonous Federal Reserve Board of Governors under legal, non-violent, citizens arrest. He was tried in a Washington, D.C. Superior Court; convicted by a Negro jury, Jew/Negro attorneys, and sentenced to prison for eleven years by a Jew judge. A Jew/Negro/White Court of Appeals denied his appeal. He served 6.5 years in federal prison. (Read about von Brunn’s “Federal Reserve Caper” HERE.) He is now an artist and author and lives on Maryland’s Eastern Shore.

Not necessarily. Remember, up until Nixon’s “southern strategy” the South was solidly Democratic and had been since Reconstruction. Truckers seemed to be the worst, hauling goods for some corporation and eager to get back to the trailer house by Friday night. Walking in to a truck stop restaurant in the middle of the night sometimes found the entire place go silent and just stare at me. This was scary to an 18 year old.

    My point?

    Not once was I harmed.
Things have changed in the USA since then.
Guns seem to be the weapon of choice.

We need to take back our Country. Terrorists, domestic or foreign, need swift and appropriate punishment. Law enforcement needs to accept the fact that White people are just as or more dangerous than minorities.

Most of these Right Wing Jihadists are also chickenshits. Look at Roeder, complaining about the air conditioning in solitary confinement.

That just makes me laugh. Do they really think they’ll be able to erase all evidence of their friend von Brunn’s existance as one of their supporters when it’s easily accessed elsewhere?

Something tells me this could actually cause problems for them, which would be nice for once!

    Thank you! :)

I really hope that Limbaugh and Buchanan et al. will give their “White Men are an endangered species” rhetoric a rest, for good.

Oklahoma City didn’t do it, and 167 more victims were claimed by an anti-American white man. Flag him enough times, let’s see how long it takes for the TP admins to ban him.

  110. Papirini says:

Funny how so many claim to be Mensa or war heroes.

The only plausible thing in his biography is serving in WWII because of the draft. But even then you could get out of service for a variety of reasons, such as being unfit, being the sole supporter of the family, race, sexuality, etc.

  111. mary lacewing says:

On the shooter’s web site he has a link to a letter from a Rear Admiral John G. Crommelin (Navy ret.) who wrote to “Erik” in Oct. 1983. Erik must be the shooter’s son:

    “Dear Erik,

Your Aunt Alyce has told me that you are a strong, healthy six year old boy and that you miss your father, James von Brunn, who has been held by federal authorities now for some time. We all hope that he will soon now be released”
    snip
    “he has committed no crime”
    snip
“he has taken very courageous and patriotic actions to try to alert the U.S. citizen to the real organization of the Federal Reserve System and its greatest danger to the survival of our once White Christian constitutional republic”

    and so on.

This admiral goes on to refer to Brunn’s service in WWII where they were apparently both naval officers and were friends for some time.

  112. hanshiro the antlion says:

    ___________________________________________________________

It’s possible to be a hateful right-wing white supremacist and be a member of Mensa. Mensa only has an IQ requirement for entry, so theoretically anybody with any kind of ideology can qualify.

That said, most Mensans don’t brag about their membership to non-Mensans. If they talk about Mensa at all, it’s usually to praise the social aspects of the group — not to state their membership as some mark of superiority. For that reason, whenever I see somebody listing membership in Mensa as some sort of personal accomplishment, I’m suspicious.

On the other hand, this guy is a real nutcase. I guess I can’t expect him to fall into the same kind of categories normal people do.

This has been happening for a few tens of thousands of years now. We’re all already part Black, part White, part Asian, part American. All it takes is a swab of spit and a few thousand dollars can tell you exactly what your percentages are.

  182. covered_10 says:

Glen Beck is now bleating this white supremacist killer is a “leftist” and the nazis were liberals AND it’s Obama’s fault…all without even drawing a breath. Next up, actor Jon Voight. I’ll leave it with you guys now. I can’t watch insanity on a full stomach.

  183. Bilbo Hussein Baggins says:

Fixed News and the right can spin this all they want but the fact is the guy was one of them, he was a White Supremacist. I’m betting that the few people left who watch Fixed News will sooner or later begin to understand how dangerous they are and how their propaganda leads to people being killed.

And, congratulations for mostly ignoring the odious troll. I just wish that TP would get rid of it once and for all.

  184. hanshiro the antlion says:

Especially when you can’t refute it.

    “fute”

    Consider yourself ‘futed.’

    “fute”

Now you’ve been re-futed. Beat it.

  185. spencers mom says:

Is ironic or just tragic that pisspants is talking about a black man who holds no office and is in no way related to the administration allegedly dissing Jews while today a black man was murdered while doing his job of six years protecting people entering a museum remembering Jews?

    What a fcuking idiot.

    PEACE

  186. Bilbo Hussein Baggins says:

    iamwhoiam Says:
Secret service should be on high alert around Obama. I’m seriously worried about him.

And that is my big worry too. Especially with Fixed News saying that this shooting was Obama’s fault because of his Cairo speech.

  187. Badger says:

Did von Brun pick his target all by himself…or did Al Qaeda pick it for him???

    The Holocaust Museum!

I hope Homeland Security is NOT letting these guys take flying lessons.

  188. hellinabucket says:

even the driveling wiperboy here has value. The responses provided by others that have facts and links help others. Not to counter the one trick pony here, but to enlighten the rest.

Besides some of the retorts by the good posters here are stellar.

  189. Zooey says:

    ralph,

Go fix your nachos. The troll will have to take a break for more lotion and tissues.

  190. PatrioticLiberalChristianMantisReligiosa says:

“Refute, do not refuse” is the cry of the lost begging, a cry of loneliness and abject sorrow nurtured by its separation from humanity. A mirror! Does he dare? Can he care? Or, alas, does he continue to wave shiny objects as substitution?

  191. ralph the wonder locust says:

spencers mom, it’s just a clear sign of desperation. It can’t get anyone to play with, so it’s ramping up the outrageousness, and repeating it endlessly, in the hope of drawing some response, any response.

    It’s not having any success.

  192. chiroptera toasterhead says:

    ElBruce Says:

I didn’t think he was that bad, but he said something yesterday that really puts me off:

Asked if he had spoken to the president, Wright said: “Them Jews aren’t going to let him talk to me. I told my baby daughter, that he’ll talk to me in five years when he’s a lame duck, or in eight years when he’s out of office. …

Not the nicest phrasing, sure, but I can understand the reasoning behind it. It’s not a slam on all Jews, it’s a reference to the AIPAC-appeasers who keep the administration treating Israel with kid gloves.

When are the powers the be going to start waking up to the threat that these right wing terrorists and thier enablers pose to the safety and security of the U.S.?

How many more innocents have to die before we as a nation look these extremists in the eye and say “NO MORE!!”?

Zooey at 213 is a perfect example.

I’ll be back later. Happy flogging.

  195. misscoleopteramolly says:

    From MSNBC…

The Council on American-Islamic Relations also released a statement: “We condemn this apparent bias-motivated attack and stand with the Jewish community and with Americans of all faiths in repudiating the kind of hatred and intolerance that can lead to such disturbing incidents.”
    __________________________________________________________

I’m not surprised by this statement. What surprises me is that a mainstream medium is reporting it. So often CAIR and other Muslim groups make statements condemning violence and it’s completely ignored by the press. But the media will give plenty of coverage to voices from the right who claim that Muslims are complicit in terrorist violence because they fail to condemn it.

Kudos to MSNBC. Now let’s see how many others will give the CAIR statement some press.

  209. ralph the wonder locust says:

That does sound promising, dbadass. I have long suspected a fractured social network to be at the root of many of these cases of vivid abnormal psychology.

The amount of time some of these cases devote to their craft is reason enough to suspect a high degree of social isolation.

I look forward to following your line of inquiry.

  210. pete says:

Yes. CAIR condemned the murderer of Pvt. Long. It’s on their website. Though I haven’t seen many “right-leaning” sources condemn the actions of this hateful old man, or the groups who shared and fed his hate. Heck! Freeperville is busy destroying evidence as we speak. In my book, that makes them accomplices.

    Accomplice. Conspiracy. Incitement. Complicity. Accessory.

All are legal terms and they all describe the part of the far-right BS machine in many recent tragedies. I’m hopeful that, one day soon, we will see a number of big federal cases built around those words and the concepts they describe. It’s time for the guilty to be rounded up, tried, convicted, and sentenced.

If the law won’t do it? It’s time to change the law.

  211. jurassicpork says:

Don’t give up on that Freeper link, yet, folks. Someone at Free Republic just put it back up for some reason.

  213. chiroptera toasterhead says:

Oh, and CAIR has issued numerous condemnations of terrorism and extremism in all forms, which covers any and all incidents of violence committed by any Muslim. So, yes, they did condemn the Little Rock shooting.

From what I’ve seen of his record, and assuming it’s true, he served in the Pacific so he wasn’t forced to fight the Nazis. It’s kind of a pity. Perhaps, had he been in Europe, he would have seen what the Nazis did first hand and realized that they were pure evil.

  217. Hoodathunktick says:

These past few months have seen a depressing rise in vigilante/take-the-law-into-your-own-violent-hands behavior. The rantings of the right wing pundits has to be considered a major factor since they have ramped up their rhetoric since last November.

Another factor is the fact we have war criminals who remain not only at large but taking up air time justifying their actions. This puts out the idea that they got away with things and the law is a joke.

  218. Cal Malenky says:

And we have radical Southern Baptist cleric Wiley Drake putting a fatwa on Obama with his imprecatory prayers asking god to kill the president.
Rev. Drake- Jesus thinks you’re a jerk.

  219. Bilbo Hussein Baggins says:

From this guy’s bio on a White Supremacist website:

In 1981 Von Brunn attempted to place the treasonous Federal Reserve Board of Governors under legal, non-violent, citizens arrest. He was tried in a Washington, D.C. Superior Court; convicted by a Negro jury, Jew/Negro attorneys, and sentenced to prison for eleven years by a Jew judge.

This is a very scary guy who belongs to a very scary group of guys. Why was he able to own a gun and why on earth wasn’t he being watched?

  220. StrawberryGirl says:

    RIP Stephen Tyrone Johns.

You are a hero who most certainly gave his life to prevent many more senseless deaths.

    June 10, 2009 3:44 PM EDT
News Corp. has agreed to form an external diversity council after meeting with civil rights groups about a New York Post cartoon that critics said likened President Barack Obama to a dead chimpanzee.

The company will form a “diversity community council” in New York City that will meet with senior company executives twice a year, NAACP President and CEO Benjamin Todd Jealous said Wednesday. It also will include a statement of commitment to diversity in its annual report.

  235. Realness says:

I think it’s worth mentioning that there is too much allowing for that troll to frame any discussion, which just hijacks it. As blog commenters on Think Progress are not card-carrying defenders of the rhetoric of Rev. Wright, why spend so much time even addressing the ridiculousness of an ‘equivalent’ argument by the troll? It’s flailing. We know regardless of Wright’s words that they don’t represent left, liberal, or progressive people AS A WHOLE. So why even care to respond?

To be fair, there’s a great deal of generalization of the right when it comes to blog topics like white supremacist gunmen. Just as the troll’s argument is ridiculous, obviously we can’t attack the complete right as white supremacist. What the troll can’t deal with is the fact that at the end of the day, most white supremacists have been influenced by rhetoric that mainly comes from the right fringe, and not the left. It’s easy to see this on free republic and redstate, various pundits, etc.

I think there’s generally a good job avoiding simplistic generalizations, but this troll in particular is an example of not becoming the worst of the other side.

They will find out soon enough, how Democrats really feel about criminals and crime. They’ll find that we aren’t the candied-assed cartoon they think we are.

This dark underside of our society has always been with us. The internet is no place to hide—though the group think can certainly feed on itself and multiply on hate web sites. I like seeing the searches of the shooter. It’s doubtful that the MSM will cover this any better than they cover anything else.

I suspect it feels that Fox news and R Congresspeople reacting to every nomination and issue as if white men were under siege is a contributing factor. The remedy is for the public to see this man punished to the full extent of the law and for everyone to know that federal agencies are watching these hate groups.

As long as anyone who has a pulse can get a gun of any sort just by giving the money to a gun seller, and as long as the Reich Wingers continue to spew their hate of anything that is not white and Christian on radio and TV (Tiller the Baby Killer, O’Lielly?), we will continue to have innocent citizens gunned down in the streets, in the churches, in the national parks and in historical institutions. There are a lot of crazy, unhinged people in this country who hate anything and anyone who is not like them (white, Christian) and we are going to reap the whirlwind as long as the hatemongers on the radio and TV continue to egg them on. When will we ever learn to live in peace? My guess is never….sorry, I’ve just had it with these nutbags and cannot continue to be optimistic about the direction our country is taking. Looks as if I will live to see anarchy reign in this country, unfortunately. What the hell happened to “love, peace and understanding?”

  245. ElBruce says:

  246. wiley says:

I understand the reactions to such phenomenon. It puts your heart in your throat. But this, and the murder of Doctor Tiller is evidence of fearful desperation, hatefulness, and ignorance. These aren’t strengths. The nuts aren’t going to take over. If anything, they will cause people who are normally indifferent to politics, or think that the “isms” are a thing of the past, to be vocal in their opposition to extremes.

Most people, even those who harbor some bigotry, aren’t hateful and murderous. This feels like the summer of 68 or 69, in some ways. Almost all Americans draw the line at murder, regardless of their political affiliations.

  247. pastcaring says:

With today’s shooting and the assassination of Dr. George Tiller, that homeland security report on rieghtwing extremists was right on the mark after all.
