Fox News’ Shep Smith: DHS Report Was A ‘Warning To Us All,’ But ‘The Right Went Absolutely Bonkers’
This afternoon, a gunman — reportedly white supremacist James von Brunn — shot and killed a security guard at the Holocaust Museum in Washington. Discussing the shooting, Fox News’ Shepard Smith reminded the audience that when the Department of Homeland Security released a report warning of violent, right-wing extremists earlier this year, “the right went absolutely bonkers!” He called the report a “warning to us all,” and said DHS was “warning us for a reason.” Watch it:
Southern Povery Law Center’s Heidi Beirich told Smith that the shooting is a reminder of the real danger extremists and “crazies” pose to the U.S.:
SMITH: There’s these crazies out there. And we know it’s absolutely — there is no truth whatsoever — zero to any of those ideas. Yet, they live within the computer and they fester within people’s minds.
BEIRICH: Shepard, you’re hitting the nail on the head. We’re extremely concerned about these kinds of crazed conspiracies, whether they’re about the President, or the fact — we’re hearing things like FEMA setting up camps to round up Americans and put them in. I’m getting bad sort of deja vu from the 1990s, when anti-government militias were on the rise, when Tim McVeigh committed that violence in Oklahoma City. I’m really hoping we’re not going through a repeat of that.

In fact each camp is built to hold 10,000 people. And there are several in different states. Ostensibly, they were to hold illegal immigrants. Sure. But anyone under the illusion that they will not be used to imprison US citizens are crazy.
If there were too many demonstrations regarding all the financial corruption, or say food riots, or any demonstrations the government considers to pesky, they would not hesitate to jail anyone. The stage was set in the last corrupt administration.
It is now a partial democracy we live in. And in case anyone has forgotten, that combat unit from Iraq that was brought into this country, despite Posse Comitatus is not here for nothing. They are going to be used to quell disturbances. The kind from natural disaster or man made. Now a days, anything the government does not like, including our CONSTITUTIONAL RIGHT TO ASSEMBLE AND TO DEMONSTRATE, will be taken as an excuse for martial law.
Once we allowed our rights to be abnegated, we opened the door to all the rest. We are a country of sheep. We stayed quiet when the Bush crime family did it. Now just try to undo what we quietly gave up. We would need to take to the streets by the millions to change anything. And as we have seen Americans are not willing to do the hard work of taking to the streets. That has not been done since the Vietnam war. We should have done it during the Bush era, and during the bailout of the corrupt financial institutions. We didn’t.

Aaaaand Shep just caught up to what we saw on the horizon back when the Palin/McCain reichstag rallies were in full swing. Whenever wingnuts don’t have power, they start vilifying the government, arming themselves and talking about revolution and war – which leads to more than talk.
This was inevitable the moment Obama got elected, and it’s just going to get worse for the next years.
There’s one difference between the 90’s and now, though: terrorism is considered just about the highest priority the U.S. government exists. Law enforcement has become hardened and streamlined to deal with it. There’s a DHS.
They’re going to have a much tougher time trying to get away with it now than they did during the Clinton years.

It warned that vets returning from Iraq may be vulnerable to the right wing extremists recruiting them. It said nothing about recruiting them for terrorist attacks against the US even though that is what the right wing extremists want to do, commit terrorist acts against us.
I am very afraid that we will see a lot of violence from the returning vets unless they get the help they need to get over their PTSD and to deal with the changed reality of their lives (like no longer having a job).

Right again Mr Baggins. Vets were one small part of the report, the part that the terrorist loving right glommed onto, (watchdog, we’re looking at you). Most of those postal workers in the 80’s who snapped were Vietnam vets who came home, took the civil service exam and got shoved into a corner of the local post office to sort mail by themselves.

Last night on am radio the host had an interview with one wanting to re investigate 9/11. This nationally syndicated show is a mix of dems and GOP… but what I found interesting is that 80% of emails, in the thousands, do not believe the story the government has dished out to US.
It has been one decade of violence, fed by Hate America talk show hosts, a thug mentality administration, and an uncertainty of what really happened on 9/11.

They have NOTHING on us and our domestic terrorists, the right wing, anti-abortionists cheered on the bastid, that murdered Dr. Tiller,1 of 4 doctors now dead, while he claims more killings and clinic bombings are planned, the White Supremists will be cackling over the shooting at the Museum, an American converted to Militant Islam went and shot up military people, Tim McVeigh a right wing whackjob,did the Oklahoma City bombing, killing just plain folks and children. The anti- abortion movement incites this kind of behavior, by their inflamed rhetoric. Sarah Palin, when at Rallies during the election campaign encouraged and condoned racist language, while “energizing the base”, even McCain was appalled and said so. I’d have to say we have much more to worry about by domestic terrorism than any foreign attacks. Better take care of the nutballs in this country before we point fingers hypocritically at other countries. Has the right wing base consentrated down to this level? How’s the rebranding going,punks?

While I’m all for streamlining the organizational agencies of government, the DHS structure seems to me to merely add an unneccessary layer for the purposes of making it look like they’re trying to do something, rather than doing it more efficiently. No matter what question Varney asks and no matter how much he insists, every Dem hack simply launches into an
anti-Bush/anti-conservative tirade, yelling louder and louder to drown-out Varney. And they are allowed to get away with it. There are now conservatives on most of the rest of the news; the producers won’t hear of it.
Obama is marching towards total control of the broadcast media and press under the guise of “fairness” and the few conservatives left on the air talk about it with a smiling condescention, as if it is a proposal for the town to institute pay as you throw trash collection. The Left has all the energy, all the guile, all the self-righteousness, all the liars tricks. It is way past time for conservatives to stop making jokes and being gentlemen/woman regarding what Obama is doing to destroy us and way past time to start fighting back in an energetic, non-violent way. Forget Right Wing and Left Wing. Period. To me, what is important is our Constitution and not a government based on someone being ‘cool’ or ‘progressive’ or your own ’skin color’. Don’t you guys see that for years we have been being divided into opposite camps so that instead of seeing and paying attention to what the government is doing (mainly- growing) we demonize and assault each other? And see how effectively it works? Man- it makes me want to attack BOTH sides- for being so easily led down an agenda laden path . . .
The main point being- without a Constitution to guarantee your rights- to all of you- what security do you have in the future if Obama changes his mind, on say- freedom of speech? What about, for example, if a person who follows Obama as president decides that only certain religions may be practised or that Orientals(or Caucasians)are funny looking? What if the next president is not Black, but Hispanic and decides, “Nope- no whites, blacks, French, Germans or Muslims will be allowed to live ( or at least to vote . . . ? To me- this is why we need the guarantee of a respected Constitution. One which is supported and one which works for all. Like the one we have now.
The sooner we can all be just Americans again, the sooner we can all have a country to be proud of, instead of one constantly bickering and complaining.

It is possible to have a more nuanced opinion than DHS GOOD/DHS BAD, you know.
I have no issues with the DHS functioning as a coordinating agency to prevent the kind of turf wars that kept the CIA and FBI and other agencies from sharing information prior to 9/11. That I’m fine with.
However, when it becomes a level of bureaucracy that hinders agency work rather than helps, as in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, then I have a problem with it.

The problem is that it’s stated purpose is not only filled better by the CIA or FBI, but it’s also millions of dollars spent to upkeep a department that’s only answerable, it seems, to the Pentagon and the DoD – and in the past several years that particular department has been led by men with varying levels of political agenda and corruption. I didn’t find out until recently that I have family who died in the Holocaust. My father’s side is Jewish and all liberal.
My grandfather had to change his last name when he went into the military (after WWII) because it wasn’t okay to be a Jew in the Marine Corps.
This day is so saddening. It disturbs me that there needs to be armed guards at a museum and that man lost his life today because of right wing hatred.
Obama did say he was saddened or rather Gibbs said it on his behalf. I hope he plans to speak out against this domestic terror. This is unacceptable.

It’s possible that he ran as a democrat I guess just because that was the only ticket available in his jurisdiction. I’ve known several politicians in my lifetime and I know that it’s not unheard of for a candidate to pick his affiliation for lower offices upon the decision to run, based on what’s available.
That being said I can’t imagine it’s true. If this guy was just a racist or something then perhaps, but he was a Nazi Sympathizer, and the neo Nazi’s by definition hate democrats.
They see democrats as a step up from the Jew or Blacks, and a “lover” of both. I can’t imagine his local Goosestep chapter would have been on board with that.
But who knows? I’d like to see anything anyone has on it, but I can’t find anything.

The part doesn’t “conflict”. If you disbelieve in a deity then by definition you “believe one doesn’t exist”.
That’s why agnosticism “without knowledge” is associated with knowledge, while theism and a-theism, are associated with belief.
Theism is the belief in a deity or deity’s and Atheism is the disbelief in them, or the “belief they do not exist”.
It’s just two ways of saying the same thing.
Just like me saying “I disbelieve you are correct“, or my saying “I believe you are not correct“.
Same thing. Just two ways of saying it.
Now, if you are saying that you just “don’t know”, and have no opinion one way or the other, then by definition you’re agnostic, (without knowledge).
Although some prefer to call that “weak atheism” to distinguish from those who actually admit they “don’t believe”, the reality is it’s covered in agnosticism.
But they can call themselves whatever they want.
They can call themselves yellow bellied Warblesnarfers for all I care. At one point it does become a semantic argument.
And silly at that point.
Because my comments are directed not to those who say “I don’t know”, they’re directed to those who say “I DO know”, which is the majority of the atheists I’ve had this discussion with.

This goes down as a hate-crime, and will be punished accordingly. Homeland security is probably working over-time, as we speak, and even a voice on Fox has proclaimed it necessary to be vigilant in the face of right-wing movements that espouse hatred and violence.
I think of getting a gun, myself, now and then. I might, if such violence becomes widespread. But bear in mind the Universal Law — Don’t Panic. Panic never helps.

And if on top of all that, we have seemingly mainstream media (ie FauxNews) legitimizing and perpetuating hate speech on a daily basis, it’s no wonder these people are so angry and ready to take violent action against abortion providers, Pres Obama, liberals, Muslims, immigrants…

In every terrorist/resistance movement through history, it’s been shown that the more military pressure you put on an oppressed population, the more resistant they become, thus decreasing the effectiveness of military measures even as military pressure increases. The only way to “kill all the terrorists” harbored by a given population would be to systematically slaughter the entire harboring population.
The only methods that have been shown to be effective (other than the oppressing regime losing a war with a third party) involve stopping killing people.

It was the first and maybe the last time I saw something on TV that was genuinely intense. Smith looked like I feel most of the time these days: like the people on the other end (Hannity & Colmes) were in some alternate universe, and nothing in the English language was getting through. (Read the proposed rule here.) The proposed regulations would designate all these knives as “switchblades” (despite the fact they do not fall under the federal definition of “switchblades”), and would make them illegal for import into the United States.
The proposed rule could affect all knives that can be opened with one hand, because it also includes changes in the interpretation of “gravity and inertia” opening knives in a way that could outlaw all knives that can be opened with a single hand. This means the new regulation could ban the importation of most of the pocketknives that are now in popular use.
