Fox News’ Shep Smith: DHS Report Was A ‘Warning To Us All,’ But ‘The Right Went Absolutely Bonkers’

This afternoon, a gunman — reportedly white supremacist James von Brunn — shot and killed a security guard at the Holocaust Museum in Washington. Discussing the shooting, Fox News’ Shepard Smith reminded the audience that when the Department of Homeland Security released a report warning of violent, right-wing extremists earlier this year, “the right went absolutely bonkers!” He called the report a “warning to us all,” and said DHS was “warning us for a reason.” Watch it:

Southern Povery Law Center’s Heidi Beirich told Smith that the shooting is a reminder of the real danger extremists and “crazies” pose to the U.S.:

SMITH: There’s these crazies out there. And we know it’s absolutely — there is no truth whatsoever — zero to any of those ideas. Yet, they live within the computer and they fester within people’s minds.

BEIRICH: Shepard, you’re hitting the nail on the head. We’re extremely concerned about these kinds of crazed conspiracies, whether they’re about the President, or the fact — we’re hearing things like FEMA setting up camps to round up Americans and put them in. I’m getting bad sort of deja vu from the 1990s, when anti-government militias were on the rise, when Tim McVeigh committed that violence in Oklahoma City. I’m really hoping we’re not going through a repeat of that.

Watch it:

The Wonk Room’s Andrea Nill highlights anti-immigrant screeds written by Brunn.

Update Smith said that the e-mail Fox receives from viewers "has become more and more frightening." He read an example, from a "birther" who called President Obama "Hussein," and said it was, "I promise, a representative sample of the kinds of things that we get here." Watch it here.

but when DHS said we have more to fear from unknown domestic terrorists, they were vilified. Yet, here we are within a month, a murderer of a doctor in a church, and now a murderer of an officer in the museum. Both are domestic terrorists in my opinion.

Their comments are truly horrifying & often involve references to violence, racism & killing. Surely the FBI & CIA are monitoring this. Fox promotes violence, & its audience eats it up.

  30. curious says:

Let’s get one thing straight. The prison camps have already been built. During the Bush admin. The BBC reported on that some five years ago. In fact each camp is built to hold 10,000 people. And there are several in different states. Ostensibly, they were to hold illegal immigrants. Sure. But anyone under the illusion that they will not be used to imprison US citizens are crazy.

If there were too many demonstrations regarding all the financial corruption, or say food riots, or any demonstrations the government considers to pesky, they would not hesitate to jail anyone. The stage was set in the last corrupt administration.

It is now a partial democracy we live in. And in case anyone has forgotten, that combat unit from Iraq that was brought into this country, despite Posse Comitatus is not here for nothing. They are going to be used to quell disturbances. The kind from natural disaster or man made. Now a days, anything the government does not like, including our CONSTITUTIONAL RIGHT TO ASSEMBLE AND TO DEMONSTRATE, will be taken as an excuse for martial law.

Once we allowed our rights to be abnegated, we opened the door to all the rest. We are a country of sheep. We stayed quiet when the Bush crime family did it. Now just try to undo what we quietly gave up. We would need to take to the streets by the millions to change anything. And as we have seen Americans are not willing to do the hard work of taking to the streets. That has not been done since the Vietnam war. We should have done it during the Bush era, and during the bailout of the corrupt financial institutions. We didn’t.

Aaaaand Shep just caught up to what we saw on the horizon back when the Palin/McCain reichstag rallies were in full swing. Whenever wingnuts don’t have power, they start vilifying the government, arming themselves and talking about revolution and war – which leads to more than talk.

This was inevitable the moment Obama got elected, and it’s just going to get worse for the next years.

There’s one difference between the 90’s and now, though: terrorism is considered just about the highest priority the U.S. government exists. Law enforcement has become hardened and streamlined to deal with it. There’s a DHS.

They’re going to have a much tougher time trying to get away with it now than they did during the Clinton years.

One clarification on what Beirichs said about the three people killed in Pittsburgh: they were COPS trying to uphold the LAW and do their duty, as was today’s security guard at the Holocaust Museum. Now we as a nation must ask ourselves: are we a nation of laws or of men and women? Real Americans must stand up and condemn these acts for what they are: domestic terrorism.

Right again Mr Baggins. Vets were one small part of the report, the part that the terrorist loving right glommed onto, (watchdog, we’re looking at you). As far as vets and violence in the future, I agree that it doesn’t look good. Most of those postal workers in the 80’s who snapped were Vietnam vets who came home, took the civil service exam and got shoved into a corner of the local post office to sort mail by themselves.

The anti-semitism of von Brunn is the first thing one notices when visiting these bizarre websites. However, like those of most “white supremacists”, many of von Brunn’s political views track “Left” rather than “Right.” Clearly, a re-evaluation of these obsolete definitions is long overdue.

For example, he unleashed his hatred of both Presidents Bush and other “neo-conservatives” in online essays. As even some “progressives” such as the influential Adbusters magazine publicly admit, “neoconservative” is often used as a derogatory code word for “Jews”. As well, even a cursory glance at “white supremacist” writings reveals a hatred of, say, big corporations that is virtually indistinguishable from that of anti-globalization activists.

Beck, Rush, Billo, Savage over the top racial remarks

Plus the fact with the previous administration for 8 years of bring em on,other countries = evil empire, illegal war…..Cheney and his death squad.

Last night on am radio the host had an interview with one wanting to re investigate 9/11. This nationally syndicated show is a mix of dems and GOP… but what I found interesting is that 80% of emails, in the thousands, do not believe the story the government has dished out to US.

It has been one decade of violence, fed by Hate America talk show hosts, a thug mentality administration, and an uncertainty of what really happened on 9/11.

So many folks are worried about Foreign terrorist attacks..rabid about the Muslim extremists and marvel that the people don’t rise up and stop the terrorists. They have NOTHING on us and our domestic terrorists, the right wing, anti-abortionists cheered on the bastid, that murdered Dr. Tiller,1 of 4 doctors now dead, while he claims more killings and clinic bombings are planned, the White Supremists will be cackling over the shooting at the Museum, an American converted to Militant Islam went and shot up military people, Tim McVeigh a right wing whackjob, did the Oklahoma City bombing, killing just plain folks and children. The anti- abortion movement incites this kind of behavior, by their inflamed rhetoric. Sarah Palin, when at Rallies during the election campaign encouraged and condoned racist language, while “energizing the base”, even McCain was appalled and said so. I’d have to say we have much more to worry about by domestic terrorism than any foreign attacks. Better take care of the nutballs in this country before we point fingers hypocritically at other countries. Has the right wing base consentrated down to this level? How’s the rebranding going, punks?

  108. Sahu says:

This is a bit silly. Fascist white-supremacists are the very definition of “paleocons,” a neologism coined to differentiate them from the so-called “neocons.”

Of course a particularly virulent anti-Semite wrote denunciations of the neocons–they were a different sub-group who was in power within the conservative movement. Worse still, from his perspective, many of its leading members were Jewish.

While I’m all for streamlining the organizational agencies of government, the DHS structure seems to me to merely add an unneccessary layer for the purposes of making it look like they’re trying to do something, rather than doing it more efficiently. Also, I find the name mildly distasteful. So there’s my opinion on the DHS, since you didn’t bother to ask.

I think it went into the ’70s for a ways, really. But that’s about it.

The wingnuts on the other hand start killing people every time they don’t control the White House. It’s like throwing a tantrum for not getting your way, but on a vast scale with real lives at stake.

  121. barfly says:

But as Pete says, any deaths they caused were unintentional.

I just sent the following email to Shepard Smith (foxreport@foxnews.com):

    Shepard:

I heard a clip of your segment about the white supremacist shooter and the hate-filled emails you get every day…

For a FOX host, you sound reasonably sane (and I apologize for that, but considering the names below, well…), so I beg you – please – when you speak of those who are fomenting this kind of race-baiting and hatred, take a good hard look at your colleagues Glenn Beck, Bill O’Reilly, Sean Hannity, Neil Cavuto, etc. etc. etc. It would take me less than 10 minutes to produce hate-filled racist inflammatory quotes from each of the above – from their own mouths. You could do it yourself. Just google their names and add some kind of qualifier like “hate” or “racist”…

I beg you to speak up. I beg you to try and get your bosses at FOX to dial back the hate and the racist rhetoric against Obama, against Democrats, against liberals, against doctors – against anyone who isn’t a white Christian. Remember Dr. Tiller? He was performing LEGAL medical processes to save the lives of women. He was NOT doing casual abortions as claimed by Bill O’Reilly. And now…he’s dead; shot by a right wing TERRORIST. Yes, a terrorist. Remember the man who burst into the UU church in Kentucky and killed worshippers because he “wanted to kill liberals”…? Another terrorist. And the man who shot and killed the black security guard at the Holocaust Museum…another terrorist. When is someone on the right going to speak up and condemn this hate and violence???

This is what you are a part of. Don’t let there be any more blood on *your* hands.

    Please. Do the right thing.

And yes, I am a liberal Democrat who proudly voted for Obama. But I am an AMERICAN first, and I’m frightened for our country and of the outburst of extreme rightwing violence and hatred.

    Sincerely,

    ~A

Stu Varney has been interviewing several liberals this afternoon regarding the Democrats’ strong-arming the country towards Marxism/socialism and using the government to force people to live the way the (Leftist) government thinks best, a la withholding medical treatment from fat people and refusing to acknowledge that Obama and Pelosi are turning the country into Germany in 1933.

No matter what question Varney asks and no matter how much he insists, every Dem hack simply launches into an
anti-Bush/anti-conservative tirade, yelling louder and louder to drown-out Varney. And they are allowed to get away with it. There are now conservatives on most of the rest of the news; the producers won’t hear of it.

Obama is marching towards total control of the broadcast media and press under the guise of “fairness” and the few conservatives left on the air talk about it with a smiling condescention, as if it is a proposal for the town to institute pay as you throw trash collection. The Left has all the energy, all the guile, all the self-righteousness, all the liars tricks. It is way past time for conservatives to stop making jokes and being gentlemen/woman regarding what Obama is doing to destroy us and way past time to start fighting back in an energetic, non-violent way. A good start would be installing “cough buttons” on Liberal guests’ microphones for when they use a show to scream Leftist talking points instead of discussing a subject as they had promised. What we see now isn’t news, isn’t entertainment, isn’t informative. It is a demonstration of how Leftist thuggery is allowed to succeed. It’s a show of conservative weakness before an opponent. It’s a voluntary slide into servitude before the worst the Left has to offer.

That being said- let’s move on. I am not a Republican. I chose the above because it’s such an obvious problem. But the ‘Right’ also has it’s quirks and oddities and things to be poked fun at . . .

Forget Right Wing and Left Wing. Period. To me, what is important is our Constitution and not a government based on someone being ‘cool’ or ‘progressive’ or your own ’skin color’. Don’t you guys see that for years we have been being divided into opposite camps so that instead of seeing and paying attention to what the government is doing (mainly- growing) we demonize and assault each other? And see how effectively it works? Man- it makes me want to attack BOTH sides- for being so easily led down an agenda laden path . . .
The main point being- without a Constitution to guarantee your rights- to all of you- what security do you have in the future if Obama changes his mind, on say- freedom of speech? What about, for example, if a person who follows Obama as president decides that only certain religions may be practised or that Orientals(or Caucasians)are funny looking? What if the next president is not Black, but Hispanic and decides, “Nope- no whites, blacks, French, Germans or Muslims will be allowed to live ( or at least to vote . . . ? To me- this is why we need the guarantee of a respected Constitution. One which is supported and one which works for all. Like the one we have now.

The sooner we can all be just Americans again, the sooner we can all have a country to be proud of, instead of one constantly bickering and complaining.

Sure. Except that your whole “Obama is turning America into a dictatorship” is crazy right wing talk. If you weren’t a wingnut extremist, then calling for a moderate majority would be reasonable. But the things you believe are crazy, and they incite others to violence. So no thanks, I think I’ll oppose your madness to my very last breath.

Stu Varney has been interviewing several liberals this afternoon regarding the Democrats’ strong-arming the country towards Marxism/socialism and using the government to force people to live the way the (Leftist) government thinks best,

Well, we had the S&L bailouts under Bush Sr. I dont recall Clinton turning America socialist. We have been subsidizing big business and oil for years. Isnt that a form of corporate socialism?

Senators, both sides, have taken hundreds of billions if not trillions home to the states, for jobs and pet projects. Isnt that a form of spreading the peoples wealth?

We have a huge military industrial complex that costs some 636 billion a year, to create jobs, to house feed and educate people in the military, to pay military men to feed clothe and house their families and to buy things they desire.

I can go on and on but I just dont get all this fear factor stuff about socialism. The banks approached congress for bailout money. Bush increased spending quite a bit, more than Clinton, more than Bush Sr even.

Obama hasnt taken over or bailed out any media outlets, Chrysler is being sold to Fiat. GM was headed for bankruptcy some time ago and itwas Bush Jr who bailed the auto industry out using TARP funds.

So, tell Mr Varney he needs to do some homework and we are not Germany. BTW MARX was for free trade and if you look at NAFTA and CAFTA they were supported by republicans and democrats.

    Absolutely!

The only reason I play devil’s advocate is that we know the far-right radicals will, through a cacophony of moral relativism, try to blame “leftists”. Our favorite pet trolls are trying it already and, until the next tragedy, the whole weight of the Reichwing BS machine will devote it’s energies to blaming the “leftists” for this tragedy.

James von Brunn’s advocacy of 9/11 conspiracy theories also gives him an additional commonality with individuals on the far-left.

He fits right with Think progress.

I agree with this, especially given that the lack of information-sharing between the two agencies has still been spotty or distorted even after 9/11. Meanwhile the DOJ, who is supposed to be the de facto third wheel of this system, is either not noticing or not caring because it’s higher ranks are too politicized.

The problem is that it’s stated purpose is not only filled better by the CIA or FBI, but it’s also millions of dollars spent to upkeep a department that’s only answerable, it seems, to the Pentagon and the DoD – and in the past several years that particular department has been led by men with varying levels of political agenda and corruption. And no matter what happens it always be associated with Bush and his failed “war on terorism”.

NOT praising DHS. Praising Shep for pointing out that a DHS report was not wrong. Two totally different things. If Dick Cheney looked outside and said it was raining, and I looked outside and saw it was raining and admitted he was right, is that praising him? Maybe that’s how you wingnuts work, but that’s not how people with brains see it.

    Ditto 12, 15, 16, 25.

    .

    35.

    ElBruce Says:

There’s one difference between the 90’s and now, though: terrorism is considered just about the highest priority the U.S. government exists. Law enforcement has become hardened and streamlined to deal with it. There’s a DHS.

How is this praise?!? I was merely pointing out that there’s more law enforcement now and terrorism is a higher priority than it used to be. I’m not saying that the DHS was a good idea.

Look, here’s a free clue: liberals have the capacity to talk about something without praising or condemning it. I know, shocking! Because praise and condemnation are the only two modes that wingnuts have, you may not be congenitally capable of understanding the words that we speak. As that is the case, maybe you should keep your misbegotten yap shut and quit commenting on them.

While we’re on the subject, allow me to refer you to #127, which you seem intent on pretending never happened. Here, let me to shove it in your ugly face so you can smell it real good:

I don’t know about anybody else, just pointing out that it exists. Thus, wingnuts prancing about in the forest playing “militia” isn’t going to be nearly as much fun this time around.

See that rock right behind you? That’s the only place where the kind of crap you’re selling is welcome. Why don’t you crawl back under it?

Anti-semitism is not now nor has ever been a “Leftist Thing”. The Jewish community has always been much more liberal than conservative, and as I pointed out above, Jews voted for Obama by a ratio of almost 4 to 1.

Having a problem with the policies of Israel and being anti-Semitic are not the same thing. Some of us want to see Israel work toward a lasting solution for the good of the Palestinians and Israel. There is a large divide in Israel between those who want peaceful solutions, and those who are right-wing radicals, such as settlers that are shooting at the police and IDF. Like all other nations, Israel is not a monolithic, homogeneous culture that can be easily labeled.

OK, let’s make this real simple for you, since your fcuking stupid. Here’s a test:

The Right: Israel should kill all the Muslims for us!

Anti-Semites: The Muslims should destroy Israel for us!

The Left: Both Israel and the Muslims should stop killing people.

Which two of those three statements are more similar? The way I see it, neocons and neo-Nazis are only distinguished by which group of non-white/Christians they want to see slaughter the other. That’s just a disagreement on details. Ultimately you both want them all dead.

Well, you do have that right. That’s for sure. Of course announcing it in a volatile political blog the day Hitler’s asschild opened fire in the Holocaust museum is probably not the best time to announce that. In fact there’s no real reason to announce it at all. Talk like that can only fuel tensions, not subdue them.

Fortunately, the guards today at the Holocaust museum were ready and able and took down lil Himmler before he could do any more damage.

It’s possible that he ran as a democrat I guess just because that was the only ticket available in his jurisdiction. That being said I can’t imagine it’s true. If this guy was just a racist or something then perhaps, but he was a Nazi Sympathizer, and the neo Nazi’s by definition hate democrats.

They see democrats as a step up from the Jew or Blacks, and a “lover” of both. I can’t imagine his local Goosestep chapter would have been on board with that.

And I posted the first definition, i.e number 1.

And not the part that conflicts. I just find it telling you only used the part of the definition that confirmed your point, and ignored the rest.

    Here we go again.

    :\

The part doesn’t “conflict”. If you disbelieve in a deity then by definition you “believe one doesn’t exist”.

That’s why agnosticism “without knowledge” is associated with knowledge, while theism and a-theism, are associated with belief.

    Agnosticism (Greek: ?- a-, without + ?????? gn?sis, knowledge; after Gnosticism)

It is often put forth as a middle ground between theism and atheism,[1] though it is not a religious declaration in itself, and the terms are not mutually exclusive, since agnosticism refers to knowledge, while atheism and theism refer to belief.[2]

Theism is the belief in a deity or deity’s and Atheism is the disbelief in them, or the “belief they do not exist”.

It’s just two ways of saying the same thing.

Just like me saying “I disbelieve you are correct“, or my saying “I believe you are not correct“.

Same thing. Just two ways of saying it.

Now, if you are saying that you just “don’t know”, and have no opinion one way or the other, then by definition you’re agnostic, (without knowledge).

Although some prefer to call that “weak atheism” to distinguish from those who actually admit they “don’t believe”, the reality is it’s covered in agnosticism.

But they can call themselves whatever they want.

They can call themselves yellow bellied Warblesnarfers for all I care. At one point it does become a semantic argument.

    And silly at that point.

Because my comments are directed not to those who say “I don’t know”, they’re directed to those who say “I DO know”, which is the majority of the atheists I’ve had this discussion with.

I’ve always directed my comments towards those who claim they “know” there is no god, which does not fall under the definition of “weak atheism”.

  349. barfly says:

All well and good Bart, but my dictionary uses both believe and disbelieve in explaining atheism. That means it’s a sematic irrelevance. The difference you attempt to portray isn’t in the definition: “Theism is the belief in a deity or deity’s and Atheism is the disbelief in them, or the “belief they do not exist” is not in the dictionary definition. That is simply your attempt to shore up your argument with semantics.

According to Random, it’s both a belief, and a disbelief, with none of your qualifiers added. So next time, try putting out the whole definition, and I won’t have a problem with it.

According to Random, it’s both a belief, and a disbelief, with none of your qualifiers added. So next time, try putting out the whole definition, and I won’t have a problem with it.

That’s because the folks at Random assume you’re actually literate enough to understand that if you “disbelieve” in something, then you believe the opposite.

If you “disbelieve I am right“, then you by definition “believe I am not right“.

If you “disbelieve the sky is blue“, then by definition, you “believe the sky is not blue“.

It’s just two ways of saying the same thing.

The folks at Random House, and the other dictionaries assume their readers are literate enough to comprehend that simple fact.

    Fascinating little story, there…

I waited there with a beautiful young brunette applying for her first job. She wore a luxurious sable coat, which I helped her remove when she complained it was too warm. I didn’t dare unbutton my trench coat, which concealed a sawed-off shot gun, a .38- police-special, a Bowie knife and a carpenters-apron containing cord, etc.

Actually, we may have dismissed your citation out of hand. Reading the rest of the review, it does look like a decent book. However, it’s talking about a new phenomenon where the anger of some people on the Left towards Israel may be starting to cross the line towards social/political antisemitism. I won’t disagree; I’ve seen some of that sentiment crop up on this very board from time to time, and I oppose it.

However, this is a far cry from claiming the Left is historically or institutionally antisemitic. The Right are the ones who have always had a lock on that in the past.

“these websites are feeding each other, the same bunch of.. the same hate that is not based on fact…”

Smith said this with a straight face. Websites, responsible for these shootings? Nice sleight of hand: Smith skilfully absolved FauxNews of any responsibility.

None of these sites, as hateful as they might be, have the reach that Limbaugh, Savage, Coulter, etc. have. And if on top of all that, we have seemingly mainstream media (ie FauxNews) legitimizing and perpetuating hate speech on a daily basis, it’s no wonder these people are so angry and ready to take violent action against abortion providers, Pres Obama, liberals, Muslims, immigrants…

Not to mention that hearing the word “fact” from a FauxNews talking head was just too rich.

An essay the committee features on its Web site, ajc.org, titled “ ‘Progressive’ Jewish Thought and the New Anti-Semitism,” says a number of Jews, through their speaking and writing, are feeding a rise in virulent anti-Semitism by questioning whether Israel should even exist.

Something neocons are fundamentally incapable of understanding:

The people Israel =/= the nation “Israel.”

  409. ElBruce says:

    wiley Says:

There have always been some orthodox Jews who were opposed to the establishment of Israel.

That opposition is on a key point of Jewish theology – they maintain that the nation of Israel could only be established by a messiah, and he hasn’t shown up yet. Therefore, doing it through the U.N. or any other way would be premature and thus false.

    .

    UCSBKitty Says:

and you think that killing all those civilians through our bombings is not creating more terrorists? Gee, that’s great, let’s kill them all so that there IS NO one to become a terrorist…

In every terrorist/resistance movement through history, it’s been shown that the more military pressure you put on an oppressed population, the more resistant they become, thus decreasing the effectiveness of military measures even as military pressure increases. The only way to “kill all the terrorists” harbored by a given population would be to systematically slaughter the entire harboring population.

The only methods that have been shown to be effective (other than the oppressing regime losing a war with a third party) involve stopping killing people.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) has issued a proposed rule change that directly targets the importation of “assisted opening” folding knives. (Read the proposed rule here.) The proposed regulations would designate all these knives as “switchblades” (despite the fact they do not fall under the federal definition of “switchblades”), and would make them illegal for import into the United States.

The proposed rule could affect all knives that can be opened with one hand, because it also includes changes in the interpretation of “gravity and inertia” opening knives in a way that could outlaw all knives that can be opened with a single hand. This means the new regulation could ban the importation of most of the pocketknives that are now in popular use.
