U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) has issued a proposed rule change that directly targets the importation of "assisted opening" folding knives. (Read the proposed rule here.) The proposed regulations would designate all these knives as "switchblades" (despite the fact they do not fall under the federal definition of "switchblades"), and would make them illegal for import into the United States.

The proposed rule could affect all knives that can be opened with one hand, because it also includes changes in the interpretation of "gravity and inertia" opening knives in a way that could outlaw all knives that can be opened with a single hand. This means the new regulation could ban the importation of most of the pocketknives that are now in popular use.

My favorite piece of news coverage Ever was during Katrina. Shepard Smith and Geraldo were on scene, and their reporting blew me away. It was the first and maybe the last time I saw something on TV that was genuinely intense. Smith looked like I feel most of the time these days: like the people on the other end (Hannity & Colmes) were in some alternate universe, and nothing in the English language was getting through. His frustration lit up the entire screen. I put the 6 minute segment on my video blog. To watch, click here; Beautiful America/Shepard Check out the clip, it's so worth watching. If TV were more like this, maybe I would own one.

I think what bothers me about this is not the hate-frenzied crazies but the people around them who choose to look away rather than confront them.

Far right/far left, they both seem to have the same views in many cases.

I can't imagine any subject that the extremist right wing agrees with even moderate liberals, much less the actual "far left" (ALF, PETA, Earth First! etc). The fact that you equate MSNBC as being as far from center as FAUX Noise is tells us exactly which side you're on. You people don't even know what a real extremist liberal looks like anymore. That's because unlike the right, we've behaved responsibly and not given platforms to our crazies.

Obama's 20 yr buddy, Rev. Wright, is a left wing extremist that seems to hate Jews, too. "those jews won't let me talk to Barack", he said. Far right/far left, they both seem to have the same views in many cases. You have fox news. You have MSNBC. I hear plenty on nonsense on both those networks. How crazy can we be to get those TV ratings. Tonight, old Olbermann was blaming Palin for the Letterman stupidity. Amazing.

I made you look stupid when you said Palin cut special needs programs by 62% and then I gave you a fact checking link that showed that was bogus. Facts clearly are not a factor in your posts, which makes your name very ironic.

So JohnM, no NEOCON LINKS? Really?

Then why is the ACJ (a right wing Israeli/NeoCon group) behind Harrison's work? OOPS...

JohnM is *PWNED* AGAIN, poor little KKKon.. ;)

You have officially shown how stupid you really are. The book I linked to was written by Bernard Harrison and then you link to a NY Times article about the AJC that doesn't even mention Bernard Harrison. You have officially been crushed. Your credibility is shot and you should simply run home and cry into your pillow.

wiley Says:

There have always been some orthodox Jews who were opposed to the establishment of Israel.

That opposition is on a key point of Jewish theology - they maintain that the nation of Israel could only be established by a messiah, and he hasn't shown up yet. Therefore, doing it through the U.N. or any other way would be premature and thus false.

.

UCSBKitty Says:

and you think that killing all those civilians through our bombings is not creating more terrorists? Gee, that's great, let's kill them all so that there IS NO one to become a terrorist...

In every terrorist/resistance movement through history, it's been shown that the more military pressure you put on an oppressed population, the more resistant they become, thus decreasing the effectiveness of military measures even as military pressure increases. The only way to "kill all the terrorists" harbored by a given population would be to systematically slaughter the entire harboring population.

The only methods that have been shown to be effective (other than the oppressing regime losing a war with a third party) involve stopping killing people.

.

ConservativeForProgress Says:

The Nazi's and Middle Eastern Jihadists have always been closely alligned in their hatred of the Jews. Mein Kamph still sells well in the Middle East.

That's all they have in common. The Left has nothing in common with either of them. The Right has much in common with both.

.

ConservativeForProgress Says:

This man was either a Lone Wolf or doing the work of the Left that supports Ahmadinejad and his kind.

The Left doesn't support Ahmaninejad; he's an Iranian right-winger.

One clarification on what Beirichs said about the three people killed in Pittsburgh: they were COPS trying to uphold the LAW and do their duty, as was today's security guard at the Holocaust Museum.

Targeting law enforcement is just what the terrorist in Iraq do. These homegrowners must identify with Al Qaida.

and you think that killing all those civilians through our bombings is not creating more terrorists? Gee, that's great, let's kill them all so that there IS NO one to become a terrorist...

is that the conservative answer to terrorism? Turn the Middle East into a radioactive zone?

southern guy Says:
This guy became what he is while in our prison systen where he became a white supremest. The same prison system that produced the Black Muslims and Latino gangs to be what they are today. Having said that, some want to add the Gitmo terrorists to mix with our terrorists and prison gangs. That has to be the most insane idea that has come along in awhile. We will give these guys rights that they don't deserve. Anyone that would blow up buildings or something simulator to the Mumbia attacks doesn't deserve to live let alone have rights. As for all the Muslims the left states were killed in Afghanistan and Iraq; there should be a steep price for American blood spilled on American groud. That all the terrorist understand!!!

Gee, the thing that shatters your argument is a thing called solitary confinement...

southern guy Says:
Most of the country were Democrats when they stood for the working man, Eventually we grew up and learned the truth. Then the Democrats couldn't get voted in so they courted you folks.

So naturally you turned to the Republicans...those champions of the working folks...makes complete sense...

There have always been some orthodox Jews who were opposed to the establishment of Israel.

The only thing that feeds bigotry is the willingness to scapegoat a group on the basis of a stereotype---any group will do in many cases. The desire to identify oneself as superior based on membership in a group, which is an accident of birth, speaks of a completely unrealized personality who has not discovered and developed the natural gifts that people have regardless of creed.

republicans hate facts Says:

I never said that the left is institutionally antisemetic, but in recent years anti semitism surely has grown on the left which was my point.

Yes, it's grown by about a thousand percent, which now makes it a pale shadow of the antisemitism that has always existed on the Right, and which still exists there today.

.

SlappyBastinado Says:

After studying posts to this site and with the ever prescient guidance of Debbi I am now capable of justifying anything anyone left of center does, may do or has done.

Well OK, but nobody "left of center" is relevant to the topic of this thread anyways.

.

republicans hate facts Says:

Then why is the ACJ (a right wing Israeli/NeoCon group) behind Harrison's work? OOPS...

An essay the committee features on its Web site, ajc.org, titled “ ‘Progressive’ Jewish Thought and the New Anti-Semitism,” says a number of Jews, through their speaking and writing, are feeding a rise in virulent anti-Semitism by questioning whether Israel should even exist.

Something neocons are fundamentally incapable of understanding:

The people Israel =/= the nation "Israel."

Can someone here translate Slappy's posts? I can't figure out where that one is coming from---seems usually to be facetious or sarcastic, but in service of what, I cannot decipher.

Smith said that the e-mail Fox receives from viewers "has become more and more frightening."

And if FauxNews stopped fanning the flames, maybe we wouldn't need to worry about another crazy rightwinger shooting people.

This also caught my attention in the clip:

"these websites are feeding each other, the same bunch of.. the same hate that is not based on fact..."

Smith said this with a straight face. Websites, responsible for these shootings? Nice sleight of hand: Smith skilfully absolved FauxNews of any responsibility.

None of these sites, as hateful as they might be, have the reach that Limbaugh, Savage, Coulter, etc. have. And if on top of all that, we have seemingly mainstream media (ie FauxNews) legitimizing and perpetuating hate speech on a daily basis, it's no wonder these people are so angry and ready to take violent action against abortion providers, Pres Obama, liberals, Muslims, immigrants...

Not to mention that hearing the word "fact" from a FauxNews talking head was just too rich.
