Krauthammer: Fox News has ‘created an alternate reality’ for its viewers.

Yesterday, Charles Krauthammer accepted the Eric Breindel Award for Excellence in Opinion Journalism, an annual award given by News Corporation. In his acceptance speech, Krauthammer lauded Fox News channel, which he said has “done a great service to the American polity” and for “single-handedly breaking up the intellectual and ideological monopoly that for decades exerted hegemony (to use a favorite lefty cliché) over the broadcast media.” But his praise took a strange turn when he extolled the “genius” of Rupert Murdoch and Roger Ailes for creating an “alternate reality” for its viewers:

KRAUTHAMMER: What Fox did is not just create a venue for alternative opinion. It created an alternate reality.

A few years ago, I was on a radio show with a well-known political reporter who lamented the loss of a pristine past in which the whole country could agree on what the facts were, even if they disagreed on how to interpret and act upon them. All that was gone now. The country had become so fractured we couldn’t even agree on what reality was. What she meant was that the day in which the front page of The New York Times was given scriptural authority everywhere was gone, shattered by the rise of Fox News.

Elsewhere in his speech, Krauthammer tried to explain why his award was more valuable to him than the Nobel Prize. The Nobel Prize is “awarded to those, from Yasir Arafat to Jimmy Carter, who give the most succor to the forces of terror and tyranny,” Krauthammer said. (HT: TPM)

Chuckie, that ‘alternate reality’ of Fixed Noise is nothing to be proud of. Your reality supports torture and killing children.
Your reality supports corporate citizenship over American citizens. Your reality supports lying to the public while covering up misdeeds and malpractice of elected officials.

Chuckie, I’ll stay with the reality I was born into, thanks.

So much better when you can just make stuff up.

Krauthammer has always been a fan of jackbooted “conservatism” but it’s increasingly obvious that he’s also completely unhinged.

This just goes to show that the folks perpetuating this BS know exactly what they are doing and why. The facts generally speak for themselves so to perpetuate a self serving agenda that can only succeed by changing the facts to get the public at large to buy in is obviously the goal of this entire enterprise.

Alternate reality? You mean, kind of like Santa Claus, the Easter Bunny, and the Tooth Fairy?

Yes, when actual reality is either painful or boring, a made-up “alternate reality” can make things more palatable — a nice fuzzy false world people can cocoon themselves in.

    ____________________________________________________________

I suspect Krauthammer still hasn’t gotten over the fact that Al Gore won the NPP, and so finds it necessary to diss the prize itself.

There are too many past laureates to list here, but anyone who wants to see a list can see one here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Nobel_Peace_Prize_laureates

I’m having a tough time finding anybody on there noted for giving succor to terror and tyranny. But I guess in Krauthammer’s world, anybody who doesn’t deal with problems by bombing somebody is a complete wuss, and therefore contributes to the problem. Sort of like the way Martin Luther King, Jr. gave “succor to terror and tyranny” by not fighting violence with violence.

Ah, the blight upon the news industry, or as it was formerly known, American journalism. Kos did extended commentary and links after FNC won the right to lie on the air in court:

In a stunningly narrow interpretation of FCC rules, the Florida Appeals court claimed that the FCC policy against falsification of the news does not rise to the level of a “law, rule, or regulation,” it was simply a “policy.” Therefore, it is up to the station whether or not it wants to report honestly.

During their appeal, FOX asserted that there are no written rules against distorting news in the media. They argued that, under the First Amendment, broadcasters have the right to lie or deliberately distort news reports on public airwaves. Fox attorneys did not dispute Akre’s claim that they pressured her to broadcast a false story, they simply maintained that it was their right to do so.

I agree! But those from both sides are guilty of this, it’s just that those on the right are more delusional.

I recall article I once read where (forget his name) a former politican basically said, we are all friends in congress. What we do is have a politician from one side, say something in the media so outlandish that it offends the supporters from the otherside, as the outrage builds, someone from the offended party comes back a day or two later to say something which will offend the supporters of the other side, and the public on both sides are furious and distracted and argue amongst one another, meanwhile the two politicians involved later get together for dinner and cognac and enjoy the spectacle that they’ve created.

The moral to this story is that we are being played by both sides and the media to further distract and divide us from the real problems facing us. It’s all a game to them.

amongst the stupidity of this quote- the only thing of interest is the REASON Nobel peace prizes are awarded to the left shows a consensus for left ideologies to be those most engaged in solving the challenges of the world, looking at the most hopeful aspects of us, not the most cynical and divisive, which is the job of the right.

Despite a monopolization of resources and power in its cynical greed, its constant attempt to re-write history, it might show with this quote that the right is bitter that its sad worldview isn’t lauded, except by gunpoint, bribery, or other coercion. It’s not that morons like C4P and Obamawipe$ don’t know anything or don’t understand anything or have no sense of logic and reason. It’s just that they’re correct and knowledgeable in alternate reality facts and alternate reality logic.

    It all makes sense now.

  94. thomas mc says:

“God will send among them a strong delusion, that they should believe a lie, that they may all be damned.”

    2 Thessalonians 2:11-12

  95. Cal Malenky says:

Translated from German, Krauthammer means “herbaceous hammer” or “cabbage hammer”

  96. Levi the Dungbeetle says:

It does not surprise me that the fascist Republican Party has adopted an alternative to reality that they propagandize. It was quite common for nazi propagandists to have claimed that nazi Germany was winning the war despite the fact that, in the real world, Germany was being overwhelmed on two fronts.

Fox News is just modern fascist propaganda, plain and simple. Reality is not important when you are spreading propaganda.

  97. Cal Malenky says:

    Alecto 74-
you left out Nixon, a practitioner of McCarthyism. He raised presidential criminality to new levels.
His disciples Cheney and Rumsfeld brought it to the Bush administration.

  98. Levi the Dungbeetle says:

Have you ever heard the sound a mosquito makes when it flies into your ear?

I wish the whining our troll makes sounded that good.

  99. joe cantwell says:

    wipey,

    alternate comedy.

prepare to laff your gop hat off!

    :)

    :)

  100. Uncle Fester Lurks says:

I can’t believe a troll is actually linking to a Glen Beck comedy tour. Duh, Beck is a very unfunny comedian, posing as a news commentator who has ADMITTED that he never fact checks his stories, so what does this tell you about anybody who listens to or watches Glen Beck.

At least Glen is honest about one thing, his comments are pure comedic theater and should not be confused as anything other than that!

  101. Wiz says:

Only the drug addled and the insane have any concept about what alternate reality is. The people at Fox should check their water supply for contamination.

    Worthy of a rerun.

  103. tombaker says:

Kristol should’ve gotten that award – he’s wrong more than anyone!!!

  104. shoeless says:

Yeah, but Kristol is too stupid to even know he is lying.

  105. Doodlebug Shayne says:

Eric M. Breindel (1955-1998) was a former editorial page editor of the New York Post.
He died of liver failure, having suffered from health problems throughout adulthood, as a result of AIDS, according to Michael Wolff in his book Murdoch Exposed.
    … Breindel’s 1983 arrest for buying heroin.

‘As a writer, Breindel was unexceptional, producing mostly the joyless prose of an ideologue. And as an ideologue, he was more effective working the back channels than he was at publicly taking issues and ideas into new territory. But Breindel understood power in a way few people do. He recognized early in his life that personality is more important than ideology. It’s all about proximity and access. If you have someone’s ear, you can make things happen.”

Breindel, among much else, was crucial to the election of Rudy Giuliani as mayor of NYC in 1993 by pursuading Rupert Murdoch to have the New York Post back Rudy in its attack-dog style rather than the Conservative Party candidate.

A fake award started by News Corp named after a junkie that considered himself a failure for having to work for Rupert. And that’s a fact.

  106. Doodlebug Shayne says:

Mosquitoes don’t crap all over the place.

  107. Doodlebug Shayne says:

Nixon was a renowned anti-Semite. Funny that his successors pretend to be pro-Israel when their motives are money and power.

  108. Jimmy Big Bucks says:

#1 news source in America: FOX NEWS

  109. AlphaLiberal says:

IOW, Krauthammer is a lying sack of shit.

  110. ralph the wonder locust says:

  113. DallasNE says:

In other words, if you shout something loud enough and often enough you can create a new reality. In that sense Fox has been a success. On the other hand, we had another shooting today by a white, right-wing nut job. That is the other reality that he conveniently fails to mention.

  114. curious says:

A moment of truth. And from a man who represents those who do not deal in truth. And what kind of an organization would reward this man? Enough said.

  115. jrt748 says:

War is Peace, Freedom is Slavery, Ignorance is Strength. Love is Hate. Truth is a Lie. Reality is what we say it is.

Conservatism has obviously reached a transcendental state. All Hail Fox News.

  116. ElBruce says:

The WWE stopped referring to themselves as a sport and coined the term “sports entertainment” instead… Can we start calling what FAUX does “news entertainment?” That would make so much more sense.

    .

The country had become so fractured we couldn’t even agree on what reality was.

Yeah, but it was you guys that fractured it. Wedge politics didn’t come from the left.

    .

    Doodlebug Shayne Says:

Nixon was a renowned anti-Semite. Funny that his successors pretend to be pro-Israel when their motives are money and power.

Well, they’re only pro-Israel until Jesus comes down on a cloud and smites all the Jews, along with all the other non-Christians. So they need Israel to start the big war that’ll set that off. The more belligerent Israel is to its enemies, the more likely the Rapture will come soon. If I was an Israeli, I’d be pretty damn insulted by such “support.”

Some of the stuff Nixon said to Kissinger’s face is pretty damn funny though. Can’t believe that guy didn’t just kick Tricky Dick’s stupid ass.

  117. wiley says:

The neocons never get the moral of the story. They just see what the villians did and think it’s a great idea.

  118. labman57 says:

It’s called “Life inside a Fishbowl”.

  119. flight says:

But his praise took a strange turn when he extolled the “genius” of Rupert Murdoch and Roger Ailes for creating an “alternate reality” for its viewers:

    +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Alternate Reality translates to the collection of village idiots.
The reality is this association is really getting scary!

  120. thinkhugegovernment says:

Hmmm…let me take a look at the cable news ratings. Darn it my drone friends; can’t we sit still for one minute! Just enough to catch up with FOX? Oh and check this out, a glimpse into reality if you can turn off the ADD –> http://tiny.cc/AG1dG

  121. thinkhugegovernment says:

Here’s some reality for everyone, if you can’t sit still and watch the video in the link that I’ve posted above, then describe the contents to your drone friends…then you, my drone, are clearly promoting the denial of reality just like the MAINSTREAM media is doing to # 1 NEWYORKTIMES best selling author 7 straight weeks Mark Levin.

And SlappytheMoron is back doing the only thing he ever does. Begging us all to pity him for being so stupid and pathetic. He will never have any self respect or friends or anything but a pitiful lonely existance. So desperate for attention he tries to get it by coming here to beg us to pity him. Dont do it. He is an addict. I know he is pathetic. He certainly deserves our pity anyone as stupid as he is would but restrain yourself. He is addicted the more you pity him the more pity he begs for. Ignore him and pray he finds a sliver of self respect some day.

  124. EugeneDebs says:

    thinkhugegovernment Says:

Bite my bag you ignorant brainwashed punk. Look YOU are a moron WAY too stupid to be so condescending. If my GOLDFISH were as stupid as you are I would put him out of his misery. Fox is DWARFED in the ratings by the networks. If you want REAL news there is competition but if you want to be a brainwashed moron and be lied to Fox is the only choice. They get the biggest percentage of the loser morons like YOU who are so proud that a few million other people are stupid enough to be fooled too. If a miracle ever happens and you somehow develop the capacity for higher brain function I hope you will have the self respect to be ashamed of how staggeringly stupid you are.

  125. EugeneDebs says:

Number one MORON at this site? JimmyCrackWhore

  126. thinkhugegovernment says:

Alright Debs, plug your ears so the steam can’t escape…just long enough to type this in a google search “cable news ratings” 2009. Oh, and then read the results. I’ll be watching Millhouse attempt to destroy our country with his media apendage slobering all over the place while blood shoots out of my eyes.

  127. wiley says:

    3 million Americans!!!

    3 million Americans:

  128. DICKERSON3870 says:

RE – “KRAUTHAMMER: What Fox did is not just create a venue for alternative opinion. It created an alternate reality.”

FROM RON SUSKIND: “In the summer of 2002, after I had written an article in Esquire that the White House didn’t like about Bush’s former communications director, Karen Hughes, I had a meeting with a senior adviser to Bush. He expressed the White House’s displeasure, and then he told me something that at the time I didn’t fully comprehend – but which I now believe gets to the very heart of the Bush presidency.

The aide said that guys like me were ‘in what we call the reality-based community,’ which he defined as people who ‘believe that solutions emerge from your judicious study of discernible reality.’ I nodded and murmured something about enlightenment principles and empiricism. He cut me off. ‘That’s not the way the world really works anymore,’ he continued. ‘We’re an empire now, and when we act, we create our own reality…”

FAUX Noise isn’t a cable news channel. It’s a “news entertainment” channel, like E! except more fake.
