News Corp. forms ‘diversity community council’ in response to chimpanzee cartoon controversy.
During the debate on the economic recovery package shortly after President Obama assumed office, News Corp’s New York Post ran a cartoon likening Obama to a dead chimpanzee. After protests and extended criticism, the Post editorialized that they apologize “to those who were offended by the image” while News Corp. chairman Rupert Murdoch later issued a personal apology. Now, the company has formed a diversity council in response the controversy:
News Corp. has agreed to form an external diversity council after meeting with civil rights groups about a New York Post cartoon that critics said likened President Barack Obama to a dead chimpanzee.
The company will form a “diversity community council” in New York City that will meet with senior company executives twice a year, NAACP President and CEO Benjamin Todd Jealous said Wednesday. It also will include a statement of commitment to diversity in its annual report.
Representatives from the NAACP, Rev. Al Sharpton’s National Action Network, the National Urban League, and 100 Black Men of America met with News Corp. executives on May 19, but it is unclear how diverse the council will be.

We will never hear a thing more about this diversity council, the main target of which ought to be Rupert Murdoch himself. After all, what kind of apology is it to “those who were offended by the image”? How about apologizing for the image? I unsubscribed from the Post long ago and now read Liz Smith on wowowow.com, where she landed after the Post unceremoniously dumped her.

Murdoch and News Corp just don’t get it! The cartoon suggested
the assassination of a sitting President of the United States, who was legally elected by a plurality of the vote. A “diversity community council” is a joke. The cartoon was an affront to the very fundamentals of our system of government.
As far as I am concerned Murdoch is a traitor to this country and no apology or “diversity community group” can change this fact.

June 11th, 2009 at 4:25 amI can predict what the diversity council at News Corp will be like: the various department admin assistants, and other low level employees, will get together to do flyers, posters, and to plan a “diversity lunch” were they will serve ethnic foods to symbolize their support for various groups. The managers and news readers will show up and eat and be gone in 15 minutes. They will then congratulate each other on their support for diversity and never give it a another thought.
