Today, ABC News’ Jake Tapper interviewed Gov. Mark Sanford (R-SC) for an ABC News podcast. Sanford conceded that it is not good for the Republican Party to have Vice President Cheney at the forefront, and repeatedly suggested that old leaders need to make a “conscious deferral” and step aside:
TAPPER: What’s your view on the prominent that Vice President Cheney has created for himself?
SANFORD: I’d say the beauty of America is, you know, it’s everybody’s prerogative. So if that’s his thing, you know, go for it.
TAPPER: But is it good for your party?
SANFORD: Probably isn’t. … You know, while somebody may have been at the top at one point, to really keep an invigorated political system, you’ve got to have new voices stepping in and stepping to the plate and giving their opinions. And any time you have some of the senior leaders continuing to lay out their case for what they believe, it probably usurps the voice of new leaders coming in.
When Tapper asked Sanford how he felt about Rush Limbaugh, Sanford suggested that Limbaugh was one of the leaders “who have had more than their share of time at a front-row seat.” “If you’ve got a disproportionate microphone, you might want to share it,” Sanford said. Listen to it:
In other words nobody is listening to him and he wants everyone else to shut up so he will be heard. Fat chance!
June 10th, 2009 at 8:35 pmWords of wisdom there, Little Marky. Once you have convinced Darth Cheney, perhaps you could set to work on Newtie Gingrich, Karl RoverBoy, Ricky Sanitarium and the rest of the republican has-beens who seem to keep hanging around.
June 10th, 2009 at 8:35 pmRush is going to beat this redneck down…just watch…
He will be crying for forgivness in 5…4…3…
June 10th, 2009 at 8:37 pmI agree with Sanford. Cheney and Limbaugh should step aside and let Sanford, Jindal, Perry and a host of other Republicans make fools of themselves on the national stage.
June 10th, 2009 at 8:43 pmsanford is an idiot who hates education
June 10th, 2009 at 8:46 pmLet’s keep Cheeney front and center. Where is Cheeney today? Who is Cheeney torturing in his bunker? Just remember, his daughter loves him, and everyone is innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
June 10th, 2009 at 8:49 pmIt’s going to be less good for your party when the lying warmonger is brought to trial.
You’re doing you own part to destroy your party and yourself in your own state, for which I thank you.
June 10th, 2009 at 8:50 pmMaybe their problem has something to do with the fact that they can’t come out and say – without using weasel words – that unelected bomb-throwers pushing personal agendas shouldn’t be leading their party.
June 10th, 2009 at 8:50 pmThere was word on Cheney today that those briefings on torture are being carefully examined.
June 10th, 2009 at 8:52 pmCheney is in his undisclosed location.
And when he realizes that he’s not much better than Cheney, we’ll have a teachable moment.
June 10th, 2009 at 8:55 pmYa think????
June 10th, 2009 at 8:57 pmCheney’s legacy is war profiteering, illegal war, torture, his death squad, and out there reminding US to be afraid.
June 10th, 2009 at 9:00 pmReally? He means that?
I doubt it. Given his record regarding gun laws, I’m surprised he and Cheney haven’t gone out hunting together. ;)
June 10th, 2009 at 9:11 pmYAWN ANOTHER RINO
June 10th, 2009 at 9:15 pmThe GOP is sort of f ucked right now. It can’t figure out who is it’s skipper. It’s tent is minute at best. The young have little to no interest in its tired old themes. The only folks they parade about are has beens. The few less ancient folks are clearly idiots ala Bachmann/Palin’s. This shit just ain’t working…. When Newt is they best you can pony up shit just isn’t good. Beware the moors, stick to the road….
June 10th, 2009 at 9:16 pmHi Jimmy Big Bucks
June 10th, 2009 at 9:16 pmSo about that chat…
This must be a ploy to get GOPers to hear Sanford and garner support in 2012. Good luck with that Sanford.
June 10th, 2009 at 9:22 pmCheney’s prominence ‘probably isn’t’ good for the GOP.
And Michael Steele’s is? Or Limbaugh’s?
Seriously, who can give the party of xenophobia, racism, anti-science, and wanton invasions a face lift?
Can you give bigotry & ignorance a face lift?
June 10th, 2009 at 9:23 pmThe GOP is completely myopic. Sure, Cheney is a cancer and hardly a good marketing mouthpiece for a minority party given his approval rating. However, there is little to nothing separating Cheney from Sanford or anyone else philosophically-wise within the party. cheney is merely a symptom of the GOP’s illness. The actual sickness are their ideas or lack of the same. Until they figure that out it doesn’t matter who they use as a talking head.
June 10th, 2009 at 9:25 pmEverybody “speaking for” the GOP at present is doing so solely in their own interest. Cheney wants his crimes excused, Palin wants a spotlight, Gingrich wants a job, and Rush just wants ratings. Until they actually come up with a cohesive plan they can all get behind, they’re all just going to continue to cynically use the GOP to feather their own nests, to its detriment.
June 10th, 2009 at 9:27 pmCan you give bigotry & ignorance a face lift?
i’m sure someday ann coulter will prove that you can, in fact, give bigotry and ignorance a face lift.
ZING!
June 10th, 2009 at 9:29 pmThere are alot of stubborn old men in the GOP who refuse to change and refuse to retire due to their power hungry, control freak character flaws.
Sanford is just more of the same BS and will have the same opinions and views – he’s shown us with his refusal to accept stimulus dollars, even to the detriment of the citizens of SC.
June 10th, 2009 at 9:43 pmI have wonderful friends in Charleston. They continue to impress me with the patience they exhibit — having to deal with Mark Sanford AND Miss Lindsey. I hope and trust that some day soon, they will have the Governor and Senator they truly deserve, and the jokers will be out on their asses.
June 10th, 2009 at 9:51 pmDarth Cheneys EXISTANCE is not good for mankind itself
June 10th, 2009 at 9:52 pmYa gotta just love the total cluelessness of today’s self-destructing Republicans. In effect, one GOP loser is calling another GOP loser a loser as if he is unaware of the fact that he and Cheney are both delusional, hypocritical losers.
June 10th, 2009 at 10:07 pmSome people who support abortion were fooled by the pro abortion fallacy that a fertilized egg is not a child…. nor is an undifferentiated mass of cells but this is a lie. If not a child what ? Each one of us reading and submitting comments were once a tiny collection of cells in a womb. Are we not glad we were allowed to live?
June 10th, 2009 at 10:09 pmI pray for the Tiller family ;it is awful to lose a loved one through an act of violence and I also pray for Scott Roeder who sadly like Dr Tiller resorted to violence as a solution Abortion is never a solution for anyone It is always a death sentence for the baby and a life sentence for the poor mother A deliberate decision to abort goes totally against the natural instincts of a woman to nurture and protect and it is very damaging to the body heart and mind of any poor soul who endures such an experience. If we really care about women’s health we can neither condone allow or encourage abortion. There are some things in life which are simply wrong Both slavery and abortion treat a human being as if it is a disposable asset. The child in the womb is not the property of the mother nor is it the property of the father It is a new citizen with rights that should be upheld and respected in Law. “
New leaders ? What new leaders ?
June 10th, 2009 at 10:12 pmPalin ? Jindal ? Huckleberry ?
Jeb might have had a chance, but his brother stuffed that up.
No leaders, no ideas, no future.
The party of no.
Little One,
First, wrong thread.
Second, a “child in the womb” is NOT a “new citizen with rights.” Even Justice Clarence Thomas agreed at his confirmation hearings that a fetus has no rights under the Constitution. Because only those who are born have rights.
Third, I respectfully disagree with your viewpoint.
June 10th, 2009 at 10:17 pmTAPPER: But is it good for your party?
SANFORD: Probably isn’t. …
I’d say more than “probably.” When the IG’s report on the torture committed by the Bush Administration comes out later this week, I’d be surprised if anyone still takes Cheney’s side in this. Word is that it was worse than we were ever told. (That’s Sen Whitehouse’s word, not mine.)

June 10th, 2009 at 10:20 pmLittle One,
You’re entitled to have your opinions on abortion. But you are not entitled to force your views on anyone else.
Abortion is legal and a woman’s right to choose. People like you need to respect the privacy and choices of others.
You don’t know the circumstances behind why a woman excercises her right to choose to have an abortion early or late term. It’s really none of your business.
June 10th, 2009 at 10:22 pmLittle One is just trying to derail the conversation off Cheney, ignore unless it posts on an appropriate thread. Then feel free to discuss.
Re the subject, I imagine Cheney won’t be a very good spokesman from his JAIL CELL either.
June 10th, 2009 at 10:26 pmThe anti-abortion crowd never listens to the women who have had abortions, least of all have they listened to the extraordinary stories of women who have elected to have late-term abortions. It seems that getting facts and understanding would make the whole issue too real for them.
June 10th, 2009 at 10:37 pmI don’t get it Mark. Cheney’s not saying anything that you think is wrong. So how is it that you want him to go away? Give me a break govenor, if Cheney told you to kiss his ass, you do it just like you did when he was “president” for those eight horrible years.

June 10th, 2009 at 10:43 pmToday, ABC News’ Jake Tapper interviewed Gov. Mark Sanford (R-SC) for an ABC News podcast. Sanford conceded that it is not good for the Republican Party to have Vice President Cheney at the forefront, and repeatedly suggested that old leaders need to make a “conscious deferral” and step aside:
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
I will tell you, this Sannford guy is brillant. He figured this one out all bt himself!
Cheney may not be good for Republican Party, but the Democrats like him in the spot light. Poster boy for the wonderful RNC, right next to Rush!!!!
June 10th, 2009 at 10:48 pmAnd any time you have some of the senior leaders continuing to lay out their case for what they believe, it probably usurps the voice of new leaders coming in.
In other words, “it’s hard to recruit non-old, non-racist, non-crazy people when you have a bloodsucking vampire who eats little babies as the face of your party.”
June 10th, 2009 at 10:57 pmRepublicans like Sanford need to sell the story that they are NEW Republicans and have absolutely nothing to do with anything that happened between Jan 2001 and Jan 2009. They don’t want people associating them with Cheney or Dubya.
June 10th, 2009 at 11:06 pmCheney’s prominence ‘probably isn’t’ good for the GOP.
Mouth sores on a whore isn’t good for the pimp either.
June 10th, 2009 at 11:09 pmWayne Ant Schneider Says:
When the IG’s report on the torture committed by the Bush Administration comes out later this week, I’d be surprised if anyone still takes Cheney’s side in this.
Wayne has touched upon the real reason for the seemingly endless cheney media blitzkrieg of the past several weeks. cheney knows this report is coming out and there is nothing he can do about it. Criminal defense lawyering 101 says that the guilty party needs to be the one to put forth the damaging evidence first, spin it, control the conversation and opinion about it before a prosecutor even gets a shot at it.
There are no coincidences in politics. cheney was in the bunker for seven years and suddenly he appears 24/7 on teevee defending his torture policy and then hands it off to his kid 24/7? And the “liberal media?” They played right along, as usual
.
This report is going to be bad. That’s why there were all the preliminary histrionics and a “debate” on what should not, prima facie, even be debatable. cheney’s entire career has been one that builds upon the concept of “immunity,” whether it was in his role of CEO of a corporation with huge asbestos liability or as vice president in an administration he did his damnedest to make a “unitary executive,” free, or immune, from prosecution.
The President and the AG are going to have to play this hand. It will be too sickening to ignore. A sad day for US citizens who care about their county’s reputation.
June 10th, 2009 at 11:11 pmLittle One Says:
Some people who support abortion were fooled by the pro abortion fallacy that a fertilized egg is not a child…. nor is an undifferentiated mass of cells but this is a lie. If not a child what ?
An undifferentiated mass of cells, that’s what. Jeez, this isn’t even an argument, you just accidentally spilled a big glob of stupid all over this webpage about the state of the Republican party.
.
Little One Says:
Each one of us reading and submitting comments were once a tiny collection of cells in a womb.
I wasn’t reading and submitting contents while in any womb. I wasn’t a person. There are distinct biological changes that take place at distinct phases of both prenatal and postnatal development. Without an interconnected neural network, you cannot have a mind, and therefore cannot be a person. That process doesn’t begin until birth.
I could use the same argument to say that lighting a twig on fire is murder: “Imagine what it’s like to be the poor twig!” That makes no less sense than your demand that we imagine being an embroyo.
.
Little One Says:
Are we not glad we were allowed to live?
That was my mom’s choice to make, not yours. If I had been aborted, I wouldn’t be here to have any opinion on the matter anyways.
.
Little One Says:
…like Dr Tiller resorted to violence…
…the natural instincts of a woman…
You are truly disgusting, you know that? Absolutely vile. I’m not sure which is worse, the notion that women are mindless instinctual creatures of some sort, or referring to helping those who need medical help in a horrible situation as “violence.”
.
Little One Says:
If we really care about women’s health we can neither condone allow or encourage abortion.
Nobody’s encouraging it. It’s not an optimal outcome. But there are others that are worse; your ignorance of them proves you have no business talking about women’s health.
Most of the people Dr. Tiller helped had serious problems with their pregnancy. Live birth may have killed the baby, the mother, or both; or may have seriously damaged the mother’s health. In most cases, the baby would have lasted only a few days or weeks before dying anyways, causing even more emotional trauma for everyone involved. You seriously have no idea what the fcuk you’re talking about, whatsoever. As this is a very important issue for grownups to deliberate in seriousness, maybe an imbecile like yourself shouldn’t be talking about it, yes?
.
Little One Says:
It is a new citizen with rights that should be upheld and respected in Law.
You should go look up how somebody becomes a citizen: one is, “you are a citizen if you are _____ in the United States.” Fill in the blank. Hint: it’s not “conceived.”
I didn’t see anything in your rant about increasing access to contraception or increasing comprehensive sex education in order to reduce unwanted pregnancies. Nor did I see anything there about granting universal pre-natal health care in order to reduce late-term complications. Nothing there about assisting single mothers who choose to keep their kids in such a way that still could give them a reasonable future. Nothing. All you care about is legislating other peoples’ vaginas.
June 10th, 2009 at 11:15 pmTRUTH is much more important than a “good” reputation that we do not deserve.
The world already knows we are the bad guys. American’s are like the cuckold who is the last to know. Our country needs a wakeup call. It is the only way to clean out the wound and start to heal.
June 10th, 2009 at 11:17 pmSanford — yet another Republicon with a mind like a “steele” trap! Yee gods.

June 11th, 2009 at 12:21 amObvious question: Why isn’t Obama pushing bush and Cheney into cell right now?
Hidden answer: Obama wants to win again in 3.5 years. If the Cheney trial were now he would waste his political capitol. If the trials were going on right before the 2012 elections the republican party would be CRUSHED. Obama Owns these fools.
Personally I preferrer civil discourse and the 2 party system. There should be a sharing of power and cooperation. But the Republicans seem to have an all-or- nothing “strategy”, which is BAD for USA.

Yawn. Jimmy is just another moron
June 11th, 2009 at 12:49 amI see the Republican party heading the same way they did with Nixon. They defended Nixon until it became so obvious they were drowning while going down with the ship. They did not have the common sense to run away as fast as they could. Likewise, they are defending Bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld, et al, because they are clinging to the idea that somehow this will all turn out alright. The torture issue is a ticking timebomb that could explode and severely injure the party. Cheney is pushing the party into a corner from which they cannot gracefully exit. And when they do try to run away, it will get ugly with a lot of casualties from the internecine warfare.
June 11th, 2009 at 12:51 amStanford is a RINO?
Janey Little Penney Stanford is part of the teabagging movement…well, actually hes using the teabagging movement, co-opt is more like it, to get more republican governors elected.

If Bush and Cheney hadn’t openly admitted what they were doing, at least the R’s could claim plausible deniability. As far as I’m concerned, BushCo violated their implicit contract of loyalty with the GOP when they outed themselves as criminals and all but dared the country to do something about it.
June 11th, 2009 at 1:05 amLeaders advance to the rear.

It might not be good for the GOP but it’s good for the country and the world.

Here are some fresh ideas from the “new leaders” in the Republican Party:
–deregulation
–tax breaks for the rich
–a renewed war on terror (i.e. Muslims)
–more rendition and better torture
–better ways to force women to have babies
–wider income disparity
–stick with our current health care system–almost as good as Cuba’s
–privatize vital government services–especially intelligence-gathering
–continue surveillance of all non-Republican citizens
–revitalized Justice Department prosecution of Democratic leaders
–a new generation of vote-flipping software.

June 11th, 2009 at 7:01 amto have Vice President Cheney at the forefront,
Last I checked, Joe Biden was the Vice President. Cheney is ex-Vice President. Get it right.

June 11th, 2009 at 8:09 amCheney’s prominence is great for the Democrats. Keep Cheney in the forefront and keep Cheney insulting the intelligence of the American people. This should help bring about the end of the G-NOP.
June 11th, 2009 at 8:40 amSorry to go ot, but this tidbit is both interesting and informative. It has to do with Michael Savage, and his connection to Rockstar Energy drinks.

Bottom line: if you drink Rockstar, you’re probably financing Savage’s racist rants.
June 11th, 2009 at 8:42 amI imagine that Cheney is upset that he couldn’t get his right-wing Nazi dictatorship set up in the eight nightmarish years that he was allotted by the American electorate and thus he continues to rant and rave. He was never any good for anyone either in America or anywhere else in the world. Good riddance to Cheney; here’s hoping that he will shut the hell up.
June 11th, 2009 at 9:30 amLimbaugh is a troll and a rabble rouser. Cheney is evil. Hannity is insane. Beck is a comedian. The rest are some combination of stupid and crazy.
