ThinkFast: June 10, 2009

gingrichlimbaugh

According to a USA Today/Gallup Poll, most people don’t know who speaks for the Republican Party. A 52% majority of those surveyed couldn’t come up with a name when asked to specify “the main person” who speaks for Republicans today. The top response was radio talk show host Rush Limbaugh (13%).

The remote Pacific island nation of Palau said yesterday that “it has agreed to a U.S. request to temporarily resettle up to 17 Chinese Muslims” now being held at Guantanamo Bay. Palau President Johnson Toribiong said the Obama administration “made the request last week and that his country was ‘honored and proud‘ to resettle the detainees from China’s Uighur minority as a humanitarian gesture.”

State Sen. R. Creigh Deeds won Virginia’s Democratic gubernatorial election yesterday, capturing approximately 50 percent of the votes. Terry McAuliffe came in second with 26 percent, followed by Brian Moran with 24 percent. Deeds will now face off against Republican nominee Bob McDonnell in the general election.

Forty percent of low-income Americans do not have health insurance,” says a report released yesterday by the Department of Health and Human Services. “Approximately one-third of the uninsured have a chronic disease and they are six times less likely to receive health-care services than those with insurance,” the report found. Read the full report here.

The family of the late Dr. George Tiller “announced Tuesday that it will not reopen his Kansas clinic, eliminating one of the few medical practices in the country that performed abortions late in pregnancies.”

Despite claims by critics that the TARP plan would be a money loser, when 10 banks returned $68 billion of the money yesterday, President Obama said the government had realized a small profit. According to McClatchy,”in addition to returning the $68 billion, the 10 banks paid the government $1.8 billion in dividends on the preferred shares of stock the government owned.”

The Obama administration is scrapping its plan to cap salaries at firms receiving government bailout money, “leaving them subject to congressionally imposed limits on bonuses.” Instead, the administration is planning to appoint a “pay czar” to monitor the firms receiving the most government aid.

The Department of Homeland Security announced yesterday that it is “temporarily freezing a policy of deporting widows and widowers of U.S. citizens.” Under the Bush administration’s immigration crackdown, “immigrants who had been married for less than two years or whose green-card process hadn’t been completed when their spouses died” would have faced deportation.

After reviewing Congressional Budget Office reports going back almost a decade, the New York Times has found ” two basic truths about the enormous deficits that the federal government will run in the coming years.” First, that President Obama “is responsible for only a sliver of the deficits, despite what many of his Republican critics are saying” and second, that Obama “does not have a realistic plan for eliminating the deficit.”

And finally: Supreme Court nominee Sonia Sotomayor is still making her way around Capitol Hill, despite her fractured ankle. Senators are trying to make her meetings as comfortable as possible though. Sen. David Vitter (R-LA) had “a bag of ice and a pillow on hand” when she arrived, and quipped, “I hope you all note that some Republicans are empathetic, too.” Sens. Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH) and Mary Landrieu (D-LA) both signed her cast, and Sen. Ben Nelson (D-NE) presented the Yankees fan with a “snapshot…of himself posing outside the old Yankee Stadium.”

Freeze out that tiresome Obamawipe$ from the moment it appears. It is a clown looking for attention. Rejoice in humiliating by frustrating its cry for attention until it reappears with a new name and then humiliate it some more. Do not give it any place to turn.
    Thanking you in advance…

    The terrorists have won.

The USS Republican is rudderless, although Rush, Sarah, Sean, Bill, and Newt are fighting over the wheel

Gotta love watching the party of fear, racism, ignorance, and bigotry fall apart. It makes the trolls so much funnier because any one with any sense has left the party.

On health insurance, the only plan that will help the currently uninsured or under insured would be a public plan. Anything else would be nothing more than rearranging the deck chairs on the Titanic.

And the christian terrorists will tout this as a great victory, clebrating the murder of a law-abiding citizen by a fanatical (and, by definition, unlawful) vigilante.

    Sick, sick people.

I am struck by another curiosity in this — the doctor obviously had a great measure of education — what was the education level of his murderer?

Enough with the Czars. Please…this is worse than a decade of “blue ribbon panels” and just as doomed and ineffective.

Even here in New Orleans, we have been saddled with Ed Blakely, an expensive “Recovery Czar”, who has done little but take bike tours of the city and spew “cranes on the skyline” rhetoric.

Can’t we just have someone in charge of department – and get some actual progress made?

  16. Xisithrus says:

Not as much as one would hope. wipey started up at 7:30 am yesterday and was still spraying feces after 2:00 am last night. Without a true commitment from the regulars, the nasty little units will return. I name no names but it would help if they would learn not to feed the trolls. I doubt that will happen, though, because for some people the compulsion to argue with trolls is as great as the troll’s need for attention.

  22. RantingTommy says:

gummble, I guess it depends on your definition of “successful”

I agree though, we need more uniform participation to make it 100% effective

  23. CageyCretin says:

“Forty percent of low-income Americans do not have health insurance,”

They are just low-income families, you know. And that’s less than half, so that’s not all that bad — not even a simple majority.

And they are low income because they just aren’t working hard enough, because anyone who works hard enough in America can have whatever income they desire, because that is what the American dream thing is all about. And so if they worked harder they’d have some insurance, because only insurance companies know what doctors and procedures you need for your health, and they need your money. It’s capitalism and all, you know.

Furthermore, they’re low income, so they’re all minorities, and they aren’t very important anyway, seeing as how they are all racialists and filthy libs.

The preceeding snark brought to you by republic fascist party reverse-projection technology.

    Massage ends.

The Republic Party’s purification process is working well…
    for Progressives.

At this rate, the Republic Party will have a couple of hundred core activists left by year’s end.

Congratulations, Rushco, your secret plan is working splendidly.

  26. gummble-bee-itch says:

Hooray for Patty! I find a certain amount of relief from the desire to smack ‘em by discussing them in the third person – although “person” isn’t really the right word. It’s just engaging them that feeds them.

  27. RantingTommy says:

    exactly gummble

it drives them crazier when you talk about them as if they weren’t here than simply ignoring them

plus, it allows us to refute their silly talking points without actively engaging them in discussion or even acknowledging their presence

  28. CageyCretin says:

    Xisithrus Says:

Ahh… but I’d bet beans to dollars that there will be a number of the Operation rescue types and similar minded people who DO celebrate both events as a clear “victory” (the tow events being: the murder of the doctor, and the closing of the clinic).

Of course their idiotic minds do NOT comprehend that all that has occurred is that it is a little more difficult for women seeking abortions (by choice or necessity) to get them — but that those women who are CHOOSING to have an abortion are not going to change their mind because one clinic closed — they will go elsewhere, and those who NEED an abortion for their health MUST go somewhere else.

How many women will die because they cannot obtain the procedure they need to save their lives because this clinic is closed?

Some people weren’t around for when the Operation started but I think that it will pick up steam when arrivals see how frustrated the ditto heads get. It is OK to talk about them but not to them right?

  31. Zimzone says:

    I’ll second that, gummble. (27)

Patty, I watched you try & use logic on that Troglodyte yesterday. I’ve fallen into the trap myself.

Inflammatory language and lies tends to bring an almost knee jerk response from progressive posters. I’ve discovered it’s actually more fun to refer to them in 3rd person. Eventually, another poster will join in & it becomes similar to ‘hot potato’, or ‘keep away’.

It also drives the Trolls crazier.

  32. PatrioticLiberalChristianMantisReligiosa says:

“Feed a cold, starve a troll”

It would be nice if we could all agree when someone has crossed the line from being a regular troll to being a disruptive troll and to also agree to put said troll on an “extinction program” by not reinforcing it with attention. Maybe if one of us simply posts “X (poster’s handle) = troll” and no objection is raised, we then starve that troll for the rest of that thread.

  33. Xisithrus says:

Ahh… but I’d bet beans to dollars that there will be a number of the Operation rescue types and similar minded people who DO celebrate both events as a clear “victory”

Im sure they will say that as well. In reality, however, Operation rescue is a failure overall because the killing of the doctor shows their ideological tactic is fundamentally flawed. You cant make people change they have to want to change.

  34. PatrioticLiberalChristianMantisReligiosa says:

I also like the tactic of talking ABOUT rather than TO a “frozen troll”.

  35. RantingTommy says:

gotta love the difference in the way liberals deal with trolls vs the way freepers deal with progressives on their site

of course, it’s easy to feel superior when comparing yourself to a right winger

I agree in principle. But I do wonder how many members of that and similar organizations actually, deep down inside (maybe not overtly), are glad for such murders (and bombings, etc.) — feeling that the violence is clearly justified and “right”.

I wonder, as well, if there isn’t a greater number who, while maybe not condoning the violence, are very much pleased to think that they have terrorized women away from the clinics. Proud of their terrorrits tactics when they work, and not able to understand the difference between education and choice and fear and terrorism.

  43. PatrioticLiberalChristianMantisReligiosa says:

  47. CageyCretin says:

  48. OutstandingInAPlagueOfLocusts says:

Deeds will now face off against Republican nominee Bob McDonnell in the general election.

This is a good thing. While the more moderate of the three, he has the best chance of winning. If the repubs win the governor’s mansion we’ll have to listen to all that “look! we’re coming back in power” stuff for months. So come on VA, let’s work to help Mr. Deeds win!
And a big thank-you to Palau, where it appears the citizens are not so easy to frighten.

  49. Xisithrus says:

I wonder, as well, if there isn’t a greater number who, while maybe not condoning the violence, are very much pleased to think that they have terrorized women away from the clinics.

Many of them seem to follow a fundamentalist leaning. I dont think they see fear as a form of terrorism as its been taught that fear keeps people on the moral path. Fear becomes good and right. Its quite a paradox and it creates dissonant hypocrisy

  50. Doodlebug Shayne says:

Palau is going to be paid heaps of money from us to take these non-terrorists. How will the Rethugs justify spending this money while complaining about the deficit?

  51. angels81 says:

It was reported today that to add insult to injury, a anti- abortion group wants to buy Dr. Tillers clinic. Is a sad day in America, when terrorism works in this country. People of all good will need to stand up to these terrorists. Maybe its time to bring the war on terrorism home.

  52. CageyCretin says:

    Xisithrus Says:

Many of them seem to follow a fundamentalist leaning. I dont think they see fear as a form of terrorism as its been taught that fear keeps people on the moral path. Fear becomes good and right.

That whole “fire and brimstone” angle, eh? Which is to say, “fear God”…. which is entirely opposite the actual christian dogma. — t Instead of a “love God” and “do good always”, they maintain the belief that you do good so that you don’t get punished, NOT that you do good for the sake of DOING GOOD. But, hey, they don’t seem to care about accuracy and honesty, nor, apparently, about actually doing ‘good’ unless forced to do so (which is why they, like the Taliban (et. al.), want thier version of ‘morality’ to be legislated — they have a need to have punishments to force them to do good and not do evil)….

Good point. Thanks for pointing that out. :)

(And if they do… I hope Dr. Tillman’s ghost haunts them till the day they die)

  55. Marie says:

I have to go back to my comment at #8.
Mark Kirk, a Congressional representative from IL, had a private meeting with Chinese leaders and undermined the Obama administration, telling them not to believe the US.

It’s bad enough not to agree with the administration policies that are a valiant attempt to turn us around from the cliff Bush&Co drove us toward, but to go abroad and advocate that our country is not to be believed is tantamount to treason. Where is the outrage?

  56. angels81 says:

  60. The Dogfather says:

Deeds will now face off against Republican nominee Bob McDonnell in the general election.

This should be fun — McDonnell has been our Atty. Genl. in Virginia for the last 4 years (that’s an elected office here), but only beat Deeds in that election by less than 400 votes. With two very successful Democratic governorships over the last 8 years, and with McDonnell already running commercials calling for a return to supply-side economics and other failed Bush policies (”keep taxes and regulation low, and the private sector will work it out”), we Virginia progressives are very encouraged…

I have not heard anyone suggest that terrorism had anything to do with the tragic loss of that flight. Preliminary explanations focus on a poorly designed pitot tube that allowed the plane’s airspeed to drop without the pilots being aware of it.

    Hello, mortal posters. God speaking.

I, too, believe naming someone a ‘czar’ is rather counterproductive in light of the name’s history. ‘Manager’ or ‘Chief’ seem more fitting.

I must also say that the news of Dr. Tiller is rather unfortunate. While I am quite obviously not one who is a very big fan of abortion, particularly when it is used as a form of birth control when less traumatic forms of such exist, I understand there exists a need for it. To be fruitful and multiply, the woman must be able to bear the fruit of her womb without worry.

I have felt the heartache of many a woman who pray to Me for guidance on this question, and it is no easy decision. I embrace those incomplete souls of the children who could not be born through unfortunate accident, and those mothers who suffer through this ordeal, too, I embrace, even if in this day and age, my power is not what it once was in the living world.

Woe to the man who claims to act in My name who murders thoughtlessly those who wish to help ease the suffering of man. A place without My presence awaits.

    _____________________________________________________________

Terrorism makes absolutely no sense in the Air France disaster.

When you think about it — what do terrorists want? They want to create terror. This means their acts of violence have to be very public, it must be obvious they are deliberate and unexpected, and if the act itself cannot be captured on camera, the bloody aftermath should generate lots of video footage that the broadcast media can play over and over. The idea here is to terrorize people.

So why would terrorists down an airplane out of everybody’s sight, uncaptured on video, in an area unlikely to generate a lot of video footage of the aftermath, and in an act that kills all the witnesses?

Add to that the fact that no terrorist group has claimed credit for this. And credit is something terrorists love to claim. Otherwise, what’s the point?

It makes no sense. But that won’t stop the fearmongers from attempting to make a connection.

Palau will received $200 million in aid, though the State Department denies it is a quid pro quo for the detainee deal. That comes out to almost $12 million PER detainee. Palau says they are willing to “temporarily” take them for “humanitarian purposes.” The bottom line is that our own courts said that the Uighur’s should be released immediately into the U.S., as they have been determined to be completely innocent of wrongdoing, but have been held prisoner in Gitmo anyway! So the U.S. won’t take the acknowledged innocent from Gitmo, and we won’t transfer those who still need to be adjudicated to maximum security prisons in the U.S. But we ask other countries to do so. And we bribe them to do so. Complete B.S.

Yesterday morning that was the emphasis of this poll. When I went to Gallup, that was the lead article on their page. And when you clicked on a link to the 33% dissatisfaction to the USA Today website, that was the emphasis of the article.

Today Gallup’s website has no mention to the 33% dissatisfaction and the USA Today link takes you to an article where the main emphasis was the lack of leaders.

So, my thinking is that the RNC called USA Today and Gallup and told them to change the emphasis because that 33% was making the party look really bad.

Besides the fact that Gallup is a right wing polling outfit, it really pisses me off that they never link to the actual poll and its results. They only write an article that has some poll numbers in it. I find that very deceptive.

In any case, the souls of those unborn children will always return to Me.

I hope I have answered your question.

I’m actually finding this discussion quite interesting, though others have noted they have become bored by it. I also think it’s kind of funny that a few seem to “wonder” is God really is speaking on this board…which I think is hilarious.

But back to God of Gods – your statement that miscarriage is ultimately due to the biology of the mother isn’t quite correct. About 50% of all miscarriages are the result of errors during the gene recombination of both the mother and father’s chromosomes, in which important genetic information is lost and the fetus has abnormal chromosomes which would make continuing viability an impossibility. Many of the other causes are unknown, but there seem to be some relevant factors like age of the mother, smoking, poorly managed diabetes and so forth. And miscarriage is very common, estimated to be 1 in 4 or 1 in 3 pregnancies. As for God “causing” miscarriages, that ties into a belief system that also believes God causes a variety of human-caused injuries and deaths (car accidents, war, etc.) and “Acts of God” such as hurricanes and so forth. The latter so that insurance companies don’t have to pay claims (ha, ha).

Regarding Connor Peterson – he doesn’t fit into an “abortion” concept since his death was the result of his mother’s murder. I would agree with you that late-term abortions for the reasons you cited above would not be murder. They are a tragedy, however, for sure.

Also the concept that the soul indwells the fetus at 5 or six months is one of many. There are many cultures that believe the soul doesn’t inhabit the baby until birth. Others that it doesn’t happen until the child is one-year-old. Since you are clearly not “really” God, your ideas are as valid or invalid as the rest of us. The truth is that no one knows, since the existence of a soul cannot be scientifically measured nor proven. I personally believe in the soul, but am quite aware that I nor anyone else can ever “prove” it exists….any more than the existence of God will ever be scientifically proven. From my own experiences, I believe that’s a fact. But I could be wrong.

The only problem I have with the “religious” is that too often it’s only human ego acting out, with the desire for power and control over others. Those people need to be ignored and made as irrelevant as they truly are. For instance, when I hear so-called “Christians” support wars, torture, disregard of the poor and needy, etc. etc. etc. I recognize them for what they are doing. Taking God’s name in vain.

Ummm, First of all, the jury is still out on the “profitability” of the TARP program. These were the more sound of the TARP banks. (And they are only in the relatively good condition they are because of trillions of dollars fo FDIC loan guarantees and asset purchases.) Losses on the remaining banks could still easily swamp the profit we’ve made to date.

Besides, I didn’t realize that the TARP funds were simply an investment. The question should be whether the larger goals were accomplished. On one level, it appears we’ve avoided a financial calamity – at least, for now. But the financial sector is still a major drag on the overall economy and does anyone really think these banks will be fine if economic conditions resume their decline?

At any rate, it still is nowhere near clear -and may never be – that this was a superior option to taking the worst 2-3 banks into receivership.

The troll godofgods is not attempting to advance conversation — it is clearly “amusing itself” at the expense of this blog, while not engaging in any level of intellectual discourse.

So — while the general topics may not be boring, the person posting them IS, and the approach is a tiresome waste of time, particularly in light that the troll speaks within the posts “as god”. The flippancy of this approach can only be interpreted as a completley frivilous level of posting, and thus not productive to conversation.

That, or the person is in serious need of mental assistance, as the poster believes himself to BE “god”.

Of course, one could surmise that by “flipped around”, watchpuppy means “what party does Rush Limbaugh speak for” which would probably elicit a near unanimous response.

winddancer, as you suspect, we were humoring a self-important troll, not “wondering” if God was really speaking. I take it that this understanding is why you put “wondering” in quotes.

I suppose so. Open to interpretation. Just like whether or not God of Gods IS a troll. For instance, I don’t put him/her into that category. At least not with this definition: “In Internet slang, a troll is someone who posts controversial, inflammatory, irrelevant or off-topic messages in an online community, such as an online discussion forum or chat room, with the primary intent of provoking other users into an emotional response or to generally disrupt normal on-topic discussion.” I think that definition fits Conservative for Progress and Watchdog, for instance, and many others we’ve seen come and go on this board. But unfortunately I’ve also sometimes seen regular, progressive posters accused of being a troll when they express opinions that are outside the mainstream of the larger TP community. After all, closed minds and judgemental behavior toward others is something the right-wing does; I’d like to see us not be so quick to do so ourselves.

I agree, winddancer. The “troll” label gets overused. I try to use it with some specificity, and I do consider GoG among that tribe, as it doesn’t really seem interested in anything beyond amusing itself.

That doesn’t preclude the possibility that sometime a troll posts, when taken seriously could not spark an interesting discussion. But it does mean that it’s not the intent, and only happens by accident.

The result of that poll resides in the Whitehouse…

Although I have to point out (my personal opinion) that strings about Steve Doocey’s son being hired by Fox News or Arlen Spector’s “tweets” more closely meet your statement “not worth your time or intellect, really,” since both the string and the dicussions they elicit are far from “intellectual fare.

I gotta call BULL $HIT on Pee’s accusation that his links are being moderated.
With a simple google, I found this joke of a blog, claiming the Democrats started the recession.

I debated whether or not to post the link, due to it’s potential for increased traffic, but it is such a joke of a blog, I gotta believe it’s content is similar to the Onion.
(My apologies in advance for the naked statues of Mr. And Mrs. Rush “Oxybreath” Limbaugh pictured there. For the faint of heart, may I recommend not viewing the left side of the site)

Yep. 11 months after the Democrats took over the House, Nanci Pelosi became Speaker of the House, the Democrats secured a 51-49 majority in the Senate (including the two “Independents” who caucused with them), and Democrats won a majority of Governorships. Remember how well the economy was doing before then?

Actually, the economy really tanked when Bush took office. Around here anyway.

Ten banks payed us back with interest. Yippee. I saw the housing bubble coming years in advance and was wondering where all those people advertising to buy mortgage debt were going to end up.

I feel like we’ve dodged a bullet. Many people are suffering unemployment and insecurity right now, but I trust the economy will get stronger. Not surprising that the NYT is suddenly concerned about the deficit, but PISH, really.

Let’s make sure that Democrats stay in charge. They need a lot of work on foreign policy, but domestically, they are the difference between a struggle and hitting bottom.
